PurposeInformation distortion results in demand variance amplification in upstream supply chain members, known as the bullwhip effect, and inventory inaccuracy in the inventory records. As inventory inaccuracy contributes to the bullwhip effect, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of inventory inaccuracy on the bullwhip effect in radio-frequency identification (RFID)-enabled supply chains and, in this context, to evaluate supply chain performance because of the RFID technology.Design/methodology/approachA simulation modeling method based on hierarchical timed colored petri nets is presented to model inventory management in multi-stage serial supply chains subject to inventory inaccuracy for various traditional and information sharing configurations in the presence and absence of RFID. Validation of the method is done by comparing results obtained for the bullwhip effect with published literature results.FindingsThe bullwhip effect is increased in RFID-enabled multi-stage serial supply chains subject to inventory inaccuracy. The information sharing supply chain is more sensitive to the impact of inventory inaccuracy.Research limitations/implicationsInformation sharing involves collaboration in market demand and inventory inaccuracy, whereas RFID is implemented by all echelons. To obtain the full benefits of RFID adoption and collaboration, different collaboration strategies should be investigated.Originality/valueColored petri nets simulation modeling of the inventory management process is a novel approach to study supply chain dynamics. In the context of inventory errors, information on RFID impact on the dynamic behavior of multi-stage serial supply chains is provided.

Abstract:

Inventory management remains a key challenge in supply chain management. Many companies recognize the benefits of a good inventory management system. An effective inventory management helps reaching a high customer service level while dealing with demand variability. In a complex supply chain network where inventories are found across the entire system as raw materials or finished products, the need for an integrated approach for managing inventory had become crucial. Modelling the system as a multi-echelon inventory system allows to consider all the factors related to inventory optimization. On the other hand, the high criticality of the pharmaceutical products makes the need for a sophisticated supply chain inventory management essential. The implementation of the multi-echelon inventory management in such supply chains helps keeping the stock of pharmaceutical products available at the different installations. This paper provides an insight into the multi-echelon inventory management problem, especially in the pharmaceutical supply chain. A classification of several multi-echelon inventory systems according to a set of criteria is provided. A synthesis of multiple multi-echelon pharmaceutical supply chain problems is elaborated.

Abstract:

Adaptive and highly synchronized supply chains can avoid a cascading rise-and-fall inventory dynamic and mitigate ripple effects caused by operational failures. This paper aims to demonstrate how a deep reinforcement learning agent based on the proximal policy optimization algorithm can synchronize inbound and outbound flows and support business continuity operating in the stochastic and nonstationary environment if end-to-end visibility is provided. The deep reinforcement learning agent is built upon the Proximal Policy Optimization algorithm, which does not require hardcoded action space and exhaustive hyperparameter tuning. These features, complimented with a straightforward supply chain environment, give rise to a general and task unspecific approach to adaptive control in multi-echelon supply chains. The proposed approach is compared with the base-stock policy, a well-known method in classic operations research and inventory control theory. The base-stock policy is prevalent in continuous-review inventory systems. The paper concludes with the statement that the proposed solution can perform adaptive control in complex supply chains. The paper also postulates fully fledged supply chain digital twins as a necessary infrastructural condition for scalable real-world applications.

Abstract:

In this paper, the cross-chain inventory emergency supplementary of two single supply chains is investigated to simulate the transshipment of the supply chain network system in the industrial cluster supply chains. We assume that each single supply chain is composed by a manufacturer, a wholesaler and a retailer. Besides, a new transshipment policy based on system dynamics (SD) is proposed in this paper, called the model of the cross-chain inventory transshipment between two enterprises from both the same tier and different tiers. The new proposed model is different from the model of the cross-chain inventory transshipment between two enterprises at the same tier and the model of the cross-chain inventory transshipment between two enterprises at different tiers, which have been researched by previous scholars. Some comparisons are made among the three models. It is proved that the new proposed model can improve the customer satisfaction level (CSL) and lower the total inventory level than the two other models existing currently.

Abstract:

Climatic and other extreme events threaten the globalized economy, which relies on increasingly complex and specialized supply-chain networks. Disasters generate (i) direct economic losses due to reduced production in the locations where they occur, and (ii) to indirect losses from the supply shortages and demand changes that cascade along the supply chains. Firms can use inventories to reduce their risk of shortages. Since firms are interconnected through the supply chain, the level of inventory hold by one firm influences the risk of shortages of the others. Such interdependencies lead to systemic risks in supply chain networks. We introduce a stylized model of complex supply-chain networks in which firms adjust their inventory to maximize profit. We analyze the resulting risks and inventory patterns using evolutionary game theory. We report the following findings. Inventories significantly reduce disruption cascades and indirect losses at the expense of a moderate increase in direct losses. The more fragmented a supply chain is, the less beneficial it is for individual firms to maintain inventories, resulting in higher systemic risks. One way to mitigate such systemic risks is to prescribe inventory sizes to individual firms—a measure that could, for instance, be fostered by insurers. We found that prescribing firm-specific inventory sizes based on their position in the supply chain mitigates systemic risk more effectively than setting the same inventory requirements for all firms.

An inventory transshipment model comprising manufacturers, distributors, and retailers based on multi-echelon supply chains is established using the system dynamics method. Thereafter, the single-, double-, three-, and four-chain inventory transshipment models at different levels are comparatively analyzed through simulation. Studies indicated that from the single- to four-chain inventory transshipment models, the average stock level minimally changed and declined. Meanwhile, the stability of the supply chain inventory improved continuously. The average customer requirement satisfaction rate of the inventory transshipment system consistently increases as the number of chains added to the transshipment system increases. However, the growth range of the average customer satisfaction rate continuously decreases with the increasing transshipment costs.

Abstract:

Based on demand uncertainty, the paper studies inventory management decision of two competing supply chains from the perspective of customer service. The paper mainly discusses two different inventory strategies, which are widely used, that is, consignment stock and VMI, and analyzes the optimal policies under three competitive scenarios, which consist of using consignment stock in both supply chains (CC mode), using VMI in both supply chains (DD mode), and using consignment stock in one supply chain but VMI another (VC mode). The paper compares equilibrium inventory level and profit of supply chain in different competitive modes, and concludes that both supply chains use VMI is equilibrium, which means that when manufacturers have right to choose inventory management policy, they prefer VMI. But it isn’t paradoxical with the phenomenon that consignment stock is common in reality, because manufacturers are forced to use consignment by retailer’s channel power.

Abstract:

Inventory inaccuracy deriving from the distortion of inventory information may possibly result in the stock out in supply chain system, spawning a great number of economic losses. Dealing with this problem, the partners in the supply chain can choose to introduce the advanced automatic identification system. In this paper, considering a three-level supply chain facing stochastic demand and suffering from inventory inaccuracy, we present a simulation model to study the increase of revenue when the supply chain introduces RFID technology. We compare the revenue of the supply chain system in two situations: The first situation deals with the case where the supply chain operates with inaccurate inventory information. In the second situation, RFID technology is introduced to eliminate the inventory inaccuracy. Further, we investigate the benefits of using RFID technology to eliminate the inventory inaccuracy within the supply chain.

The objective of this paper is to develop a spreadsheet-based simulation methodology to evaluate the performance of a serial supply chain under different inventory position based ((r, Q) and (r, S)) and non-inventory position based (Fixed Order Quantity (FOQ) and Demand Flow Strategy (DFS)) periodic review inventory policies. The performance measures comprises of Fill Rate, Risk of Shortage, Bullwhip Effect and Total Cost of Supply Chain. An experimental study with four scenarios are carried out for two customer demand distributions under information sharing and no information sharing scenarios to determine performance measures in lost sales environment. The best performing inventory control policy for each scenario is found by conducting Grey Relational Analysis and the analysis show that one of non-inventory position based policy, FOQ is the better policy compared to other three policies.

Abstract:

It is difficult to control and coordinate inventory of assembly manufacturing supply chain because there are multi-suppliers in control system. In order to integrate different suppliers and send parts packages to production line directly, Supply-Hub is used in practice. Queuing theory and basic inventory strategy are applied to model inventory control of assembly manufacturing supply chain with Supply-Hub mode. And optimization solution for decentralized decision and centralized decision were derived separately. Then coordination inventory strategy is obtained by comparing decentralized decision and centralized decision. Backorder and holding cost subsidy contracts are used for coordination that incites suppliers to set basic inventories in favor of whole supply chain operation cost reduction. And numerical examples of three suppliers and one manufacturer are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the coordination strategy.

Abstract:

The traditional MC supply chain only set up single CODP. Some scholars set multiple CODPs in supply chain in theory, so the inventory becomes more complicated. The paper firstly analyzes the inventory in MC supply chain with single CODP and multi-CODP, then builds inventory simulation modeling of supply chain with single CODP and multi-CODP based on system dynamics. Finally, uses the case of turbine production and related data to simulate and demonstrate. Actually, the total inventory at the CODP of single CODP chain is less, while the total work in progress of multi-CODP supply chain is less. And the total work in progress of supply chain with multi-CODP controls better.

Abstract:

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the value of reducing errors in inventory information from a supply chain perspective. To this end, the benefits of reducing errors in inventory information are compared with those of lead time reduction and supply chain collaboration. Design/methodology/approach – A simulation model is constructed to perform the analysis. Findings – Results show that lead time reduction is the most important strategy for a supply chain in reducing total supply chain cost. In terms of customer service level, on the other hand, strategy of reducing errors in inventory information is observed as the most considerable strategy. However, the results for supply chain collaboration are somewhat unexpected. Namely, in spite of its popularity, supply chain collaboration provides very limited contribution to the supply chain. Practical implications – This research provides useful knowledge for the managers of a business enterprise in prioritizing various supply chain strategies. Originality/value – In supply chain management literature, greater emphasis is given to lead time reduction and supply chain collaboration than dealing with errors in inventory information. This research makes it clear that errors in inventory information should not be underestimated.

Inventory control systems have an important role in supply chain management to control process of production, inventory and distribution of products in accordance with rapidly changing consumer demand. The research aims to develop inventory control system on supply chain that can manage the number of production and supply of products based on variables of consumer demand and lead time. Supply chain inventory control systems are designed using model of supply chain inventory control within the information system framework. Model of inventory control using variable of demand lead time is designed by probability approach. Input to the system are data of demand and lead time sent by retail. The results of research provide theory of supply chain inventory control system with probability approach, especially on developing the theory of probability distribution for combined variables from two random variables of normal distributed. Inventory control system used to determine safety stock and reorder point as the basis for determining the replenishment stock. Furthermore by the system, supply chain management can manage the estimation of production number, and manage inventory and stock number of products in warehouse, supplier and retail in accordance with the consumer demand.

Purpose In today’s competitive retail industry the most critical success factor is customer service which is indicated by product availability. It is argued that in the retail industry, product availability is an important measure of quality. The single most vital decision that every retailer needs to make is, how to maximize service level while keeping minimum inventory level. The purpose of this paper is to explain and demonstrate the relationship between inventory level and customer service level. Design/methodology/approach This study examines an inventory system utilizing a simulation model based on company data obtained from a retail fast-moving-consumer goods chain operating in Thailand. Findings The results suggest that the achievement of a responsive service level is dependent on managing an efficient supply chain in addition to logistics cost reductions. The findings also reveal the effect the inventory level has on the service level. From the findings of this study, demand variability and service level have been found to have the most significant influence on the inventory level. From the findings, it can also be shown that real and accurate information is very important for service supply chains. Practical implications The paper promotes the importance of having an appropriate inventory management policy for a retail chain which should be driven by retail companies in order to better balance inventory and service levels. Originality/value The relationship between the inventory level and customer service level lead to different outcomes at different combinations of inventory and service levels. Significant relationships were found between inventory and service levels.

Through anglicizing the inventory of each node in the supply chain under stock replenishment strategy, the bullwhip effect in upstream enterprise of automobile industry supply chain inventory is proved. The method of Model Predict Control is taken in the simulation of the optimization model. This study expands the work on contagion effects caused by supply chain disruptions beyond the impacted firm and competitors to its customers and suppliers. Using hand-collected data, we analyze the news announcements to determine those that resulted in disruptions in supply, demand, production, inventory, distribution, or transportation at one or more stages of a supply chain across different types of disruptions and across six market segments. Using event study methodology and regression analysis, we find statistically significant negative share price responses to announcement of supply chain disruptions for the affected firm and its competitors, but not for consumer and supplier firms. Competitors in more concentrated industries, with higher growth prospects, or with higher debt ratios, are more impacted by disruptions by peer firms. Customers firms in less competitive industries, who exhibit higher risk, or have overall lower sales react more negatively to disruption announcements.

In this paper, the authors propose a reliability based design optimization approach for optimal inventory design in emergency operation, considering reliability target. In this context, the reliability of an inventory system is defined as the probability that the available inventory level meets all population demand during crisis period. Inventory support for emergency operations is complicated by uncertainties of demands and duration of crisis period. The inventory system is considered as a structure that undergoes an external load represented by the demand of population during crisis period. Moreover, the supply chain resists to this load by its strength represented by the quantity of products available at the distribution center. Reliability based design optimization approach is proposed to perform an optimal design of inventory system in emergency operation without making any particular assumption on distribution of population demand and duration crisis period. The simulation software SIMIO is used to validate the proposed method by conducing simulation analysis using several examples with different distributions of population demand and duration crisis period. The results indicate clearly that the proposed method gives an optimal design with reliability much closer to target value.

Through an international business risk management lens, the widespread and catalytic implications of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic on the supply chains (SCs) of fashion multinational corporations (MNC) are analyzed to contribute to existing research on supply chain management (SCM). While a movement towards agile, networked supply chain models had been in consideration for many firms prior to the outbreak, the pandemic highlights issues inherent in supply chains that employ concentrated production. We examined the current state of fashion supply chains, risks that have arisen historically and recently, and existing risk mitigation methods. We found that while lean supply chain management is primarily favored for its cost and waste reduction advantages, the structure is limited by the lack of supply chain transparency that results as well as the increasing demand volatility observed even before the COVID-19 outbreak. Although this problem might exist in the agile supply chain, agile supply chains combat this by focusing on enhancing communication and buyer-supplier relationships to improve information exchange. However, this structure also entails an associated increase in inventory and inventory costs. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused supply and demand disruptions which have resonating effects on supply chain activities and management, indicating a need to build flexibility to mitigate epidemic and demand risks. To address this, several strategies that firms can adopt to control for such risks are outlined and key areas for further research are identified which consider parties both upstream and downstream of the fashion supply chain.

In order to research the long-term disruption influence on supply chain and the performance that contracts exert on supply chain when disruption happens, this paper constructs a VMI three-echelon supply chain model based on system dynamics. Through dynamic simulation of the model, the total inventory, total profit and market demand shortage data are respectively collected under conditions of no disruption, manufacture disruption and transport disruption. By descriptive statistical analysis of these data, we find the disruption has secular and hysteretic effect on the supply chain. Furthermore, T test is used to testify the contracts effectiveness on the supply chain under disruption conditions. These analytical results show that quantity discount contract and revenue sharing contract can effectively relieve the negative influence on the supply chain when disruptions happen, since they not only enhance the total profit but also stabilize the fluctuation of the supply chains total inventory, whereas the contracts do not perform well in satisfying the market demand shortage.
