Agitated dispersions of one liquid in another immiscible liquid are widely used in chemical industry in operations such as liquid-liquid extraction, suspension polymerisation, and blending of polymers. When holdup of the dispersed phase is increased, in an effort to increase the productivity, at a critical holdup, the dispersed phase catastrophically becomes the continuous phase and vice versa. This phenomenon is known as phase inversion. Although the inversion phenomenon has been studied off and on over the past few decades, the mechanism of phase inversion (PI) has yet not become clear. Therefore it is necessarily restricted by the need for an accurate starting model. The phenomenon of ‘inclusion’ in emulsions refers to the inclusion of continuous phase into the dispersed phase drops and formation of multiple drops due to the tendency of the inner phase to stabilise the outer phase. Inclusion plays an important role in both catastrophic phase inversion (CPI) emulsification process and preparation of multiple emulsions. In CPI, inclusion leads to formation of abnormal multiple drops, which eventually invert to the opposite desired normal emulsion. On the other hand, in multiple emulsions, inclusion may have an adverse effect leading to instability of the mul

Abstract:
The first part of the dissertation concerns the Ising problem proposed to Ernst Ising by his supervisor Wilhelm Lenz in the early 20s. The Ising model, or perhaps more correctly the Lenz-Ising model, tries to capture the behaviour of phase transitions, i.e. how local rules of engagement can produce large scale behaviour. Two decades later Lars Onsager solved the Ising problem for the quadratic lattice without an outer field. Using his ideas solutions for other lattices in two dimensions have been constructed. We describe a method for calculating the Ising partition function for immense square
