The Cognitive Interview (CI) has been shown in over one hundred studies to enhance eyewitness recall. However, no study has explored whether the CI improves police job performance. The current study was the first to test the practical value of the CI in a criminal investigation, testing participants’ performance on key police tasks using either a perpetrator description elicited from a CI or from a standard police interview (SI). In an earlier study, student witnesses were exposed to a simulated robbery and were then interviewed using either a CI or an SI to elicit a description of the robber

Prioritizing public investments is arguably one of the most important and complex tasks Governments face. In this thesis, I contribute to such a task by examining the Elasticity of the Marginal Utility (EMU). This parameter is central to the determination of the Social Discount Rate, which is the discount rate used for Cost-Benefit Analysis in the public sector. I estimate the EMU using an unprecedentedly large dataset and test variants of the estimation technique which include National Insurance Contributions and Supernumerary Income. I also test the robustness of the estimates obtained. I fu

This study explores the adoption and use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in a context marked by ubiquitous connectivity and intense social interaction. Research in the field has predominantly explored the topic within closed and private contexts, such as work and education environments. Specifically, theories often assume that behaviour is shaped exclusively by the utility derived from technological functions – an occurrence more common in closed and private settings. Other i

This thesis is concerned with the rationality of human probability estimates, specifically the potential influence of outcome utility on estimates of probability. Intuitively, and normatively, the desirability of an outcome should not make that outcome seem more or less likely to occur. Chapter 1 provides a background to the subsequent empirical work by addressing some general issues surrounding a probabilistic approach to human reasoning. The major questions addressed are whether people represent uncertainty quantitatively and their competence at doing so, considered with reference to the sta

The rapid emergence of distributed fuel cell powered generations (DFPGs) operating in parallel with utility has brought a number of technical concerns as more DFPGs are connected to utility grid. It can possibly result in injury to utility personnel arriving to service isolated feeders, equipment damage, and system malfunction. Abstract:
In recent years, many investigators have predicted that with a semiactive suspension it is possible to attain performance gains comparable to those possible with a fully active suspension. In achieving this, the method by which the damper is controlled is one of the crucial factors that ultimately determines the success or failure of a particular semiactive suspension. This study is an investigation into the effectiveness of a number of basic control strategies at controlling vehicle dynamics, particularly vehicle roll. The test vehicle is a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), a class of vehicle t
