Full textStarting with the first observation that the African continent has been and still is, one whose inhabitants are the poorest in the world, we have assigned a target to try to identify the ins and outs. In light of advances in growth theory, we have listed the two main mechanisms conveyors of economic growth, namely the accumulation of factors of production and technical progress. As second observation, we noticed that both the investment rate and the level of technical progress was lower on the African continent than elsewhere. Also aware of this situation, the governments of these countries have begun to attract more foreign investment as possible, on the one hand considered as a way to circumvent the lack of productive investment and secondly as a mode of adoption of new technologies. Therefore, the impact of FDI on economic growth in developing countries and in Africa in particular, has been the object of our study. We found in our study, as in the literature on the subject, that the impact of FDI on domestic investment in Africa is neutral, supporting the assumption that these investments increase at least the stock of physical capital per head of our African sample. In doing so, the FDI will affect the per capita income of countries in our sample, in different proportions but according to the same principle as the national investments. We found that foreign direct investment, had an average positive upper impact on the long-term level of per capita income (22% average increase every five-year) than domestic investment (0.5% average increase every five-year) . However, we have not registered positives productivity externalities in these countries, due to the presence of foreign business. Within a larger sample this time, including as well developed countries, developing countries and African countries, we found that FDI becomes significant for the process of technological catching-up, by productivity externalities when the ratio of total factor productivity in the host country compared to the United States is greater than or equal to 0.47. So to get the most from the presence of multinationals in their territory, African countries must first establish, good political, economic and social conditions, enabling them to improve their absorptive capacity (reasonable productivity gap vis -à-vis the United States)

Full textThere is still scant knowledge in the economic and international business literature regarding two issues: - Valuation methods of modes of market entry and of investment by an international telecom operator, - The case of Africa as a host continent for these investments. The thesis deals with foreign investments in Africa in the telecom sector, focusing on two entry modes: license awards and acquisitions of local operators. Its objective is to demonstrate on what extent « local » factors (related to the host country and its local telecom market) have an impact on the valuation of these investments in sub-Saharan Africa. This work covers the issues of the strategic interest of these investments, the methods to valuate these investment opportunities, as well as the different factors to take into account in this valuation. A database has been developed, gathering all deals made by multinational operators in sub-Saharan Africa over 2000-2010. Several quantitative analyses have been conducted as from this corpus, in order to identify the determinants of deal amounts. This work demonstrates the lack of regularity and rationality in deals’ prices of the telecom sector in Africa

Full textWe examine the contribution of FDI on poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa from 1990 to 2005. The effects of FDI on poverty are analyzed through two mechanisms: institutional and economic. First, analyzing the institutional mechanism by a principal component analysis, we find out that manufacturing FDI are positively correlated with economic development, investment climate and reducing poverty. Second, we analyze the effects of FDI on poverty through economic mechanism within two parts. On one hand, multinational firms can crowd-in or crowd-out local firms. Using adequate econometric method “GMM Arenallo and Bond (1991)”, we detect that FDI in Sub-Saharan African countries crowd-out local investments. On the other hand, FDI affect absolute poverty through their effects on both growth and inequality. Using a simultaneous equations model, we’ve found that extractive FDI promote growth but increase inequality. This leads to an increase of absolute poverty. Thus, poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa should be based, primarily, on distribution processes
