Full textBackground: In recent years, the interest in sustainability has increased among companies, but for investors, the interest in sustainability is divided. Several sources show that investors have an increased interest in sustainability, while others show the opposite and do not recommend moving favorable investments from companies with negative environmental impacts.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how much investment companies take sustainability into account when investing and how investment companies contribute to increasing sustainable work in their companies.Method: The essay uses a qualitative research method with three semi-structured interviews over the telephone. Conclusion: The results of the study show that all investment companies believe that sustainability plays a decisive role whether they want to invest in companies or not. The reason is that sustainability is a prerequisite for companies to survive in the long term and all investment companies want to find companies that can generate long-term value. All three investment companies have signed guidelines and frameworks that will help the companies to operate towards a sustainable environment and work climate and influence the companies to responsible investment. If any company owned by the investment companies violates the established guidelines, the investment companies may choose to terminate their ownership of the company.

Full textBackground and problematization: An investment company is a firm which business idea is to own other companies. It has a significant role in the society by contributing with capital and help already established companies forward. Within a research context other kind of companies with similar business ideas has been in focus which causes a gap in the research area regarding investment companies and risk management. This is especially interesting to study because investment companies have become a more common investment, meanwhile investment companies are described to have a similar risk diversification as an equity fund. To get a broader understanding on how it differs between different companies and countries a comparison is made between Swedish, British and American investment companies. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze if investment companies manage an efficient portfolio. Method: The main theory of this study is the modern portfolio theory which is based on Markowitz´s ideas of an efficient portfolio that does not only contain a long list of assets but instead consider the correlation between assets. According to this theory the optimal portfolio is the most efficient and has the highest sharperatio. To be able to achieve the purpose of this study the optimal portfolio will be compared to the investment companies’ actual portfolio. The companies with the smallest difference between these portfolios will be considered the most efficient regarding risk management and vice-versa. Conclusion: The results show that there are room for improvements for most investment companies and there are extremely few that holds a portfolio that is as effective as the optimal portfolio. There are also differences between the companies regarding how they manage their portfolio risk and which types of companies they invest in. The British investment companies are those who stands out in this study.

Full textThis essay examines how well eight chosen Swedish investment companies in the Stockholm stock market hold up as an investment alternative in relation to the risk and return of the investment. They will be compared with the SIX Return Index and the yield to maturity within a time period of ten years, 01.01.2001 – 31.12.2010. The purpose of this examination is to come to a general conclusion about investment companies as an investment alternative regarding their risk-adjusted return with the help of quantitative information gathered mainly from their company’s homepage. After the comparison the authors were able to come to the conclusion that investment companies historically had managed to show way better results than both the markets index and the yield to maturity. Despite a few investment companies achieving weaker results than the market index, investment companies as a group would have been a very beneficial investment alternative with an average rate of return that beats the market index by 8 percent.

Furthermore, a developed portfolio theory by Grubel & Solnik is applied to get an international perspective. Result: The result consists of a presentation of the processed data as underlies the analysis being carried out. Conclusions: The study produces a portfolio in the form of Bure Equity AB and Berkshire Hathaway. In comparison with the pre-existing pension options the study’s portfolio shows a significantly higher nominal return. The constellation of Bure Equity AB and Berkshire Hathaway exhibits a nominal return of 19,75 % in relation to the active saver in the premium pension with a nominal return of 7 %. The passive saver assigned to AP7 Safa exhibits a nominal return of 11 %.

Full textThe discount to NAV has been a debatable topic in the corporate world and the scientific field for a long period of time. Even though the underlying factors associated with the discount to NAV has been well documented and widely discussed, scientist remains divided on the topic. A factor that has been determined to have an effect on the discount to NAV is unquoted holdings which also is the starting point for this thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between Swedish investment companies discount to NAV and the companies’ unquoted holdings by studying key performance indicators regarding the companies ‘unquoted holdings. The thesis was based on quarterly observations of the discount to NAV, the quota of unquoted holdings, level of diversification and financial key figures. To answer the hypothesis of the thesis we used Pearson`s test of correlation and linear regression. The thesis result indicates that there is a positive relationship between the discount to NAV and the quota of unquoted growth companies. The results also showed a negative relationship between profitability in unquoted holdings and the discount to NAV.

Full textSweden has had a booming economy during the recent years. The Swedish Riksbank however believes that the economy will slow down in the near future. During times of uncertainty stable assets are often preferable where real estate assets are one interesting option with a low correlation to many other asset classes. This study examines the portfolio the real estate investment company Fastator consisting of companies active in the real estate sector. Fastator's ownership share in the companies are between 50 to 100% and their level of activity in each investment depends on whether they are acting as an active owner, on a project basis or keeing the investment as a financial asset. The study has analyzed Fastator's portfolio to see if it, based on modern portfolio theory and theories around diversification, could be considered as being diversified. Earlier studies in the field have also been examined to assist in answering the question. The evaluation of the portfolio's diversification is based on geographical locations of the underlying assets as well as the property types in the portfolio. Knowledge on the various property types that exist was obtained by looking at the portfolios of the largest real estate companies in Sweden. It is concluded that Fastator's portfolio cannot be considered diversified since the portfolio is not evenly weighted as required in the theory of modern portfolio.
