Roubin, Jean-Pierre. "Étude de l'injection d'atomes neutres rapides dans le tokamak T. F. R." Paris 11, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987PA112194.
Full textDuring neutral beam injection experiments on TFR, the increase of the plasma temperature appears to be weak and is saturating at high power. This observation leads to question the classical scheme of power coupling to thethermal plasma and tocheck experimentally its successive stepsheck experimentally its successive steps. First of all, the neutral beam transmission and capture in the plasma, measured by calorimetric methods, are in agreement with the classical calculations. Next the confinement and thermalization of the fast ions is reviewed by means of three different measurements:- charge exchange analysis of fast neutrals leaving the plasma (an auxiliary modulated neutral beam gives a spatially resolved measurement)- neutron flux analysis during injection of deuterium ions into a deuterium plasma- measurement of the fast ions trapped in the toroidal magnetic field ripples. These experiments show that a non-classical mechanism transports the most energetic ions towards the plasma periphery. This phenomenon then limits the overall power that can be effectively absorbed in the plasma centre and contributes to deteriorate the energy confinement. Finally, the respective role of thermal and non-thermal populations in the power balance is addressed

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study fast-charging of lithium-ion, battery using the ohmic-drop compensation method. The latter method theoretically will reduce the total charging of the batteries considered. In this thesis, the ODC method was implemented on three different types of 18650 battery cells. These batteries are C/LFP, C/NMC and LTO/LFP. This method show a good result for C/LFP and LTO/LFP batteries with a reduction of total charging time of about 70% in comparison with the classical method. Nevertheless, there are some issues regarding this method; the temperature elevation of the battery is high during fast-charging. Indeed, almost all fast-charging procedure experiences the same problem concerning that matter. Moreover, with ODC fast-charging method, high current rate and high voltage will worsen the situation. These complications of the ODC fast-charging method are key points for both performance and durability of the batteries. Particularly, we have demonstrated that C/LFP battery underwent internal degradation as a mechanical deformation of the active materials and degradation of electrolyte

Full textA physics-based battery model is developed for an accurate state-detection of batteries in the automotive industry. In order to use the model for the purpose of fast charging control an aging observer is designed and integrated to the battery model. In a subsequent step a robust fast charging control is introduced to design a controller able to deal with large parametric uncertainties of the battery model while achieving the fast charging target. Finally some simplifications in the battery model structure, in the optimization technique and in the definition of fast charging profiles are proposed and evaluated to make the whole model applicable for an onboard battery management system

Full textLithium ion (Li ion) secondary batteries have become the most prevalent technology for a broad range of electronic devices from consumer gadgets to high-end locomotives and energy storages in smart grids. The rapid proliferation of both mobile and mobility devices, and recent developments in electric vehicles (EVs) have tremendously increased the demand for Li ion batteries (LIBs) and indirectly created a huge dependency of peoples’ mobility life. Therefore, now it is extremely critical to have LIBs to continuously power up the mobility devices for longer period of time. Anyway, as a rechargeable energy source, the LIBs will naturally drains its’ capacity after a certain period of time permitted by the power demand of the device and the storage capacity of the battery. Therefore, any charging mechanism which can charge-back the battery up to the fully charged status within the shortest possible time, also called fast charging, is highly demanded and extremely valuable in this context. However, the fast charging itself is a very challenging issue due to a number of reasons such as the complex effects (polarization, li-plating, li-deposition, depletion of active materials and etc.) of multi-disciplinary factors co-exists within the internal reactions, limitations in measuring advanced electrochemical and electro-physical factors, the inherent safety issues with the use of high rates and the tendency of deteriorating health and cycle life of a battery as a most common aftermath of fast charging. Therefore, a number of different approaches can be found in the battery research and literature, and mostly realized under three different sections: one is the introduction of new chemistries which can store more electric power, the second is the structural or design changes which can tolerate some of the adverse effects of fast charging or may be even improve their performances and the third and most interesting is the algorithmic based fast charging protocols which can also help to leverage the performance in both the other approaches. Therefore, our thesis has focused on a new fast charging protocol for LIBs to fully charge within about 20 minutes time duration. This new protocol is based on a concept of non-linear voltammetry (NLV) with the use of a set of adaptation parameters related to the state of charge (SOC) and the state of health (SOH) of the battery. The fundamental of this concept is the foreseen relationship that the “product of”, “the rate of the change of drawn/charge-current (dI/dt)” and “the rate of the corresponding voltage change (dv/dt)”, is a “constant”, and expressed as (|dI/dt|)α * (dv/dt) = K. Here, the K is a constant and the “α” could be any non-zero value. The principle analogy here is when the battery voltage is increased, the resulted current accepted by the charge circuitry will naturally depends on the intrinsic kinetic-parameters which effects on charging at that peculiar moment of the battery system. Accordingly, in case of a rapid increase of current, the above relationship will regulate the voltage-change to be a smaller value, inversely proportional to the current ramp. Conversely, a small ramp in current will encourage this model to apply a large voltage change and accordingly let the cell to quickly push in to certain voltage regions which naturally favors in charging with high rates

Full textLithium-ion batteries are considered nowadays as the optimal issue for the energy storage systems, it is mainly due to their high energy and power density. Their performances, lifetime, and reliability are related and depend on the operating conditions such as the temperature and requested current by the application. And in order to track the evolution of the ageing of the battery, the determination of its State-Of-Health -SOH- is a major function to consider. This thesis presents both methodologies and techniques developed for the management of the lifetime of lithium-ion battery, and more particularly the assessment of its state-of-health, based on its own main parameters which are the capacity and the ohmic resistance. This approach allows to switch from a static SOH (based on a predefined ageing model, which take into account the calendar and cycling ageing of the battery, according to some characteristics such as the temperature and the courant of the battery tracked in real time) to a dynamic SOH (self-adaptive) using an online assessment of the previous parameters according to the operating conditions. The first chapter is an overview about the lithium-ion technology: characteristics, performances, cell design, choice and nature of the electrodes... The operating principle with the general equations are also developed. The second chapter is a state of the art of the lifetime prediction methodologies with the different kinds of classification of models and prediction techniques. Then in the third chapter, we will discuss our methodologies and the developed techniques, such as the use of statistics, fuzzy logic and rules of ageing to assess a dynamic state of health of the battery, which not only does take into account the static SOH (calendar and cycling ageing), but also considers the evolution of the ohmic resistance and the capacity of the battery, depending on the time and the operating conditions. This allows taking into consideration unlikely phenomena. Finally, in the last chapter, we will expose obtained results from validation tests. These tests were done under a power electrical testbench and a rapid prototyping testbench with real cells

Full textSwift heavy ions of the space environment can induce the formation of morphological defects in the gate oxide of abroad spacecraft components. Those morphological defects are currently not taken into account by the standard military MIL-STD-750 test specifications when dealing with heavy ion-induced CMOS degradation. The present study is about the definition of the swift heavy ion-induced morphological defects formation criteria in SiO2−Si elementary structures, as a contribution to the elaboration of a new prediction model of MOS failure during space applications. Our results show that very thin oxide layers seem to inhibit morphological defects formation in SiO2−Si structures under swift heavy ion bombardment. We have also pointed out an experimental evidence of the discontinuous energy deposition at the nanometric scale in amorphous SiO2. This experimental upshot gives a better understanding of the physical mechanisms during the oxide degradation under swift heavy ion irradiation. Besides, the thermal stability of the morphological defects observed provides information about the potential role of those defects in the post-irradiation gate oxide breakdown

Full textThe energy transport in the Fast Ignition scheme within the framework of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) is done by means of energetic charged particles, relativistic electrons or fast ions. The particle transport and energy deposition process is rather complicated and its detailed description requires large scale kinetic multidimensional calculations. These codes are CPU time consuming and cannot be easily implemented in radiation hydrodynamic codes that describe the fuel assembly, resulting energy deposition and the combustion. Reduced methods are needed that account for the main features of the kinetic transport process and are sufficiently fast and efficient to be introduced directly in an hydrodynamic module. We have developed two reduced models of charged particles transport, suitable for integration in hydro-codes. The first model, called Trumpet, is a two-dimensional extension of a simplified 1D model for the average scattering angle. The second model called M1 is a simplification of the Fokker Planck equation, based one the angular closure respecting the minimum entropy principle. These two models have been integrated in the CELIA hydrodynamic code (CHIC). After considering the advantages and limitations of these models, we used them to calculate the ion energy deposition in a compressed target. We have modelled the protonic radiography of a cylindrical laser-driven impulsion, and analyse a new fast ignition scheme with fast deuterium tritium and carbon ions accelerated by laser

Full textIon Cyclotron Resonant Heating (ICRH) by waves in 30-80MHz range is currently used in magnetic fusion plasmas. Excited by phased arrays of current straps at the plasma periphery, these waves exist under two polarizations. The Fast Wave tunnels through the tenuous plasma edge and propagates to its center where it is absorbed. The parasitically emitted Slow Wave only exists close to the launchers. How much power can be coupled to the center with 1A current on the straps? How do the emitted radiofrequency (RF) near and far fields interact parasitically with the edge plasma via RF sheath rectification at plasma-wall interfaces? To address these two issues simultaneously, in realistic geometry over the size of ICRH antennas, this thesis upgraded and tested the Self-consistent Sheaths and Waves for ICH (SSWICH) code. SSWICH couples self-consistently RF wave propagation and Direct Current (DC) plasma biasing via non-linear RF and DC sheath boundary conditions (SBCs) at plasma/wall interfaces. Its upgrade is full wave and was implemented in two dimensions (toroidal/radial). New SBCs coupling the two polarizations were derived and implemented along shaped walls tilted with respect to the confinement magnetic field. Using this new tool in the absence of SBCs, we studied the impact of a density decaying continuously inside the antenna box and across the Lower Hybrid (LH) resonance. Up to the memory limits of our workstation, the RF fields below the LH resonance changed with the grid size. However the coupled power spectrum hardly evolved and was only weakly affected by the density inside the box. In presence of SBCs, SSWICH-FW simulations have identified the role of the fast wave on RF sheath excitation and reproduced some key experimental observations. SSWICH-FW was finally adapted to conduct the first electromagnetic and RF-sheath 2D simulations of the cylindrical magnetized plasma device ALINE

Full textFast charging of batteries is a major challenge for the development of electric vehicles. A deployment of high power chargers is underway. These high power levels motivate research on batteries, with the aim of significantly reducing their charging times. For a battery cell of given characteristics, the charging power is limited by electrical, thermal and lifetime considerations. This thesis then wishes to make a contribution to the reduction of the charging time, by taking a numerical approach including modeling, simulation and optimization. It also compares 4 cell references of different materials and different energy densities.First, models of the electrical, thermal and aging behavior of a cell are developed separately, then coupled. In a systematic way, the models are presented, their calibration procedures are described, and they are compared with experimental data. Particular attention is paid to the effect of high current regimes under different thermal conditions. This made it possible to extend their respective domains of validity. Then, an accelerated aging campaign is carried out on 3 cell references. It compares the effect of the charging current, the end-of-charge voltage and different thermal conditions on the degradation, within the framework of a reference charging protocol. The results made it possible to identify several strategies for reducing the charging time, regarding the choice of a cell reference, thermal management, and the optimization of the charging protocol. This last strategy is finally studied. A method of definition of a charge protocol, containing several stages of constant current, is developed based on numerical optimization. The method makes uses the electro-thermal model implemented. It is then used to define 5 optimized charging protocols which are subjected to accelerated aging tests. The degradation is compared to that observed for the reference charging protocol. Under comparable conditions with the reference protocol, the optimized protocols make it possible to reduce the charging time and/or the degradation

Full textThe permanent trend toward the miniaturisation of electronic devices results in new physical phenomenon due to the geometric effects. In particular, the undesirable short channel effects of MOS transistors as the « punch through », require shallower and high doped junctions. A first shallower implant profile would leads to a shallower junction following the different rapid thermal treatments. In order to circum vent all phenomenon inadequate for the control for shallower junction, we are interested to the boron implantation through a protecting oxide layer. This technique restricts or even completely eliminates the ion channelling phenomenon. The diffusion kinetics of implanted boron are investigated following the rapid thermal treatment as a function of applied thermal budget. During thermal treatment, he diffusion phenomenon is more pronounced as the protecting layer thickness is little than the projected range. In this study, the investigations are reported essentially on : -the influence of the protecting oxide and its thickness, - the effects of rapid thermal treatment on the spatial redistribution of implanted boron, - the nature and evolution in terms of apparent concentration during the anneal of point defects electrically active

Full textThis study aims at investigating the use of ion implantation doping for the realization of emitters and back surface fields of silicon solar cells. The benefits of using ion implantation instead of high temperature gaseous diffusion are the possibility to precisely control the dopant concentration profiles as well as to simplify the solar cells fabrication process. Beam line ion implantation and plasma immersion ion implantation techniques have been used and compared during this work. Phosphorus, boron and arsenic have been implanted and activated by thermal annealing to form the various doping layers. The influences of the annealing temperature, of the implantation doses and of the passivation layers on the junction electrical quality have been studied. Low emitter saturation current densities were reached for each dopant. The implanted doped regions were then integrated in p-type silicon solar cell structure (including a phosphorus doped emitter) and in n-type PERT bifacial solar cell structure (including a boron doped emitter and a phosphorus doped back surface field). With the use of ion implantation, efficiency of 19,1 % was reached for the p-type solar cells corresponding to an overall gain of 0,6 %abs as compared to the gaseous diffusion doping, while 20,2 % of efficiency were measured on the n-type bifacial silicon solar cells

Full textThe objective of the first study was to measure if high concentrations of aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) hinder accurate quantification of phytate in dairy manure and broiler litter when measured by high performance ion chromatography (HPIC). In this study dairy manure and broiler litter samples were spiked with Al, Fe, and phytate. Samples were alkaline extracted, acidified, cleaned up and filtered, and then phytate was analyzed with HPIC. High concentrations of Fe did not hinder phytate recovery in manure or litter samples. While phytate recovery was close to 100% at typical manure and litter Al concentrations, high concentrations of Al inhibited phytate recovery in litter samples and in some manure samples. Overall, alkaline extraction of dairy manure and broiler litter and analysis with HPIC proved to be a relatively accurate, fast and cheap within normal Al and Fe ranges, compared to the commonly used NMR method.
The developed method was then used to measure the concentration of phytate P (Pp) rather than the entire phytate molecule (6 moles Pp per mole phytate) in runoff waters and in an adsorption study. Phytate P has not been previously measured in runoff, due to the low concentrations of Pp found in runoff and the complexity Pp extraction from runoff. Runoff treatments were dairy manure with and without added Pp (DM, DM+Pp), broiler litter with and without added Pp (BL, BL+Pp), and control, with and without two levels of Pp (control, control Pp low, control Pp high). Runoff was collected under simulated rainfall and analyzed for total and dissolved reactive P (DRP). Runoff was also separated into sediment (>0.45"m) and liquid (<0.45"m and lyophilized) fractions for Pp analysis by high performance ion chromatography (HPIC). The new method for Pp analysis recovered 70% of Pp spiked into runoff samples. Phytate P was found only on the sediment fraction of runoff and was not detected in the liquid fraction, even when it was lyophilized and extracted. This agreed with the adsorption study, which showed strong adsorption of Pp. Phytate P loss from control Pp high was significantly greater than Pp loss from control. When control Pp high was removed from analysis, Pp loss from BL, BL+Pp, DM, and DM+Pp was significantly greater than from control. Phytate P in the manures appeared to behave differently than pure Pp salts, likely to do the formation of protein-phytate and cation-phytate complexes in the manures. Phytate P had no effect on DRP in runoff for any treatment, indicating no significant release of inorganic P through competitive binding. The majority of P lost in runoff was in fractions other than DRP and Pp in the sediment fraction. Efforts to control the erosive loss of soil during rainfall events appear to be the best way to reduce total P loss, irrespective of the presence of Pp.

Full textA-Si:H/c-Si heterojunction solar cells have reached record efficiencies of 24.7%. The passivation of c-Si is the key to achieve a high-efficiency. Indeed, the abrupt discontinuity in the crystal structure at the amorphous/crystal interface induces a high density of dangling bonds creating a high density of defects in the band gap. These defects act as recombination centers for electron-hole pairs photogenerated in c-Si. Several dielectric layers can be used to passivate n-type and p-type wafers: (i) SiO₂ produced by thermal growth, (ii) Al₂O₃ deposited by ALD, (iii) a-SiNₓ:H and a-Si:H deposited by PECVD. The most versatile passivation layer is a-Si: H because it is effective for both p-type and n-type wafers. In addition, this process has a low thermal budget since the deposition is made at 200°C. The drawback of this passivation layer, in particular when p-type doped, is that it does not withstand temperatures above 200°C. However, in order to have a good electrical contact, TCO and metal electrodes require high temperature annealing (between 300°C and 500°C).We implanted Argon ions in solar cell precursors with energies between 1 and 30 keV, which allows to control the depth to which we are creating defects. By varying the fluence between 10¹² Ar.cm⁻² and 10¹⁵ Ar.cm⁻² we control the concentration of defects. We show that implantation with an energy of 5 keV and a fluence of 10¹⁵ Ar.cm⁻² is not sufficient to damage the a-Si:H/c-Si interface. The effective lifetime of the minority charge carriers, measured using a photoconductance technique (decay time of photoconductivity), decreases only from 3 ms to 2.9 ms after implantation. On the other hand the implantations at 10 keV, 10¹⁴ Ar.cm⁻² or at 17 keV, 10¹² Ar.cm⁻² are sufficient to degrade the effective lifetime by more than 85%.Following implantation the solar cells have been annealed in a controlled atmosphere at different temperatures and this up to 420°C. We show that annealing can heal the implantation defects. Moreover, under certain conditions, we obtain lifetimes after implantation and annealing greater than the initial effective lifetime. Combining ion implantation and annealing leads to robust passivation with effective carrier lifetimes above 2 ms even after annealing our solar cell precursors at 380°C. We used a large variety of techniques such as photoconductance, photoluminescence, spectroscopic ellipsometry, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy and hydrogen exodiffusion to characterize and analyze the physico-chemical phenomena involved in the modification of solar cells precursors. We discuss here several effects such as the increase of the effective lifetime and the temperature robustness by the preservation of hydrogen in amorphous silicon layer and this even after annealing. This hydrogen preservation can be explained by the increase of the number of Si–H bonds in amorphous silicon and the formation of cavities during implantation. In the course of annealing the hydrogen which diffuses is trapped and then released by cavities and dangling bonds, which limits its exodiffusion and makes it available for dangling bonds passivation

Full textAccelerating ions/protons can be done using short laser pulse (few femtoseconds) focused on few micrometers area on solid target (carbon, aluminum, plastic...). The electromagnetic field intensity reached on target (1019 W.cm-2) allows us to turn the solid into a hot dense plasma. The dynamic motion of the electrons is responsible for the creation of intense static electric field at the plasma boundaries. These electric fields accelerate organic pollutants (including protons) located at the boundaries. This acceleration mechanism known as the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) has been the topic of the research presented in this thesis. The goal of this work has been to study the acceleration mechanism and to increase the maximal ion energy achievable. Indeed, societal application such as proton therapy requires proton energy up to few hundreds of MeV. To proceed, we have studied different target configurations allowing us to increase the laser plasma coupling and to transfer as much energy as possible to ions (target with microspheres deposit, foam target, grating). Different experiments have also dealt with generating a pre-plasma on the target surface thanks to a pre-pulse. On the application side, fluorescent material such as CdWO4 has been studied under high flux rate of protons. These high flux rates have been, up to now, beyond the conventional accelerators capabilities
