Abstract:
Objective: To determine the effect of two adhesive systems and a glass ionomer coating resin on fluoride release and concurrent pH changes over a period of 168 days. Material and methods: Four restorative materials were investigated: a giomer Beautiful II, an “alkasite” material Cention, a conventional composite Filtek Z250, and a glass ionomer cement Fuji IX Extra. Light-cured composite specimens were coated using G-aenial Bond and Clearfil Universal Bond Quick. Glass ionomer specimens were coated using GC Fuji Coat LC. Uncoated specimens were used as references. Quantitative fluoride release and pH changes were measured after 1 h, 24 h, 2 days, 7 days, 28 days, 84 days, and 168 days. Results: The cumulative fluoride release after 168 days increased for uncoated specimens in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention < Fuji IX Extra. A comparatively lower fluoride release was measured for the composites coated with Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, with cumulative values after 168 days increasing in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention. The composites coated with G-aenial Bond showed lower fluoride release compared to the uncoated specimens, with cumulative values increasing in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention. The composites coated with G-aenial Bond showed pH values in the acidic range (4.4- 5.7) after 1 h and 24 h. Conclusion: Fluoride release varied among the investigated restorative materials and depended on the use of dental adhesives and coatings. The pH of all materials, coating types and time points varied.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Thie thesis consists in a research on modernity in brazil, exclusively linked to the universe of plastic arts, between 1920 and 1980. This analysis into the works of tarsila. Ione and oiticica. The objective was to detect and then to analyse the signs of changes of tone in the works of these artist and, comsequently the upheavals they introduced into brazilian culture. I started from the assumption that is no unique concept of modernity and that are as many modernities as eras, another question was also tackled, which was modernity in the "third world". The research showed that these three artists instituted new languages, although they were under the influence of heritages. They were deeply influencied by the avant-garde european, especially tarsila and ione. Oiticica antecipated body art and environmental art. The european influence and the brazilian primitive, the search for identity and the inauguration of a universal characterize these fragments of modernity. These are modernities that are achieved through different means, namely through identity - tarsila -, through the search for aesthetic dif- mension - ione - and lastly, through the option of testing the experi- mental - oiticica - which led him beyond aesthetics

Mantovani, Rocco.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the bodily experience of rhythm in space-time through expressive movement present in the Ione de Medeiros Body Rhythmics practice. Medeiros began to develop her Body Rhythmics in the field of music education at Fundação de Educação Artística, in the 1970s. Later, the artist-teacher included this practice in the actors body training of Grupo Oficcina Multimedia. Documentary, experimental and bibliographical researches were made to investigate the cognitive and affective characteristics experienced in Medeiros Body Rhythmics. The documentary research was done in 75 artist-teachers notebooks containing three decades of registration (1970-1999). The experimental research consisted of the application of the neuropsychological tests Raven and Continuous Performance Test-CPTs Conners. The bibliographical research was made on authors from the Cognitive Sciences and Art Education field. The methods used for data collection were literature review, participant observation, questionnaires and interviews. For data analysis it was used content analysis and statistics. The qualitative and quantitative data analysis has demonstrated a strong presence of Dalcroze principles in Ione de Medeiros Body Rhythmics and a positive change in the attentional paradigm of reaction time after the Body Rhythmics practice. From these findings it is possible to say that the body experience in Medeiros practice has the somaesthetic, enactive and inventive dimensions which promote the embodied knowledge built through this artistic practice. This Knowledge comes from the shared learning presence state training.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract We have developed a unique technology for mutation induction of plants using energetic ion beams at the RI Beam Factory (RIBF) of Rikagaku Kenkyūjo (RIKEN) (Institute of Physical and Chemical Research). Ion beams effectively induce mutations at relatively low doses without severely inhibiting growth. The irradiation treatment can be given to various plant materials and mutation can be induced in a short time, between seconds and a few minutes. The linear energy transfer (LET) of ions depends on the nuclide and velocity. Since LET value affects the mutation frequency, it is an important parameter to determine the most effective irradiation condition in mutagenesis. We determined the most effective dose in each LET for mutation induction in imbibed rice seeds. Subsequently, we analysed the mutated DNA responsible for the phenotype in morphological mutants. Most of the mutations were small deletions of less than 100 bp. Irradiations of C-ions and Ne-ions are effective for plant breeding because of the very high mutation rate and sufficient energy to disrupt a single gene. On the other hand, all mutations induced by Ar-ion (290 keV/μm) irradiation were large deletions ranging from 176 bp to approximately 620 kb. The average number of mutations in the target exon regions was 7.3, 8.5 and 4.3 per M3 mutant plant in C-ions, Ne-ions and Ar-ions, respectively. The number of mutations induced by heavy-ion irradiation was relatively small. We could identify six responsible genes for eight mutants induced by C-ion and Ne-ion irradiations and two responsible genes for four mutants induced by Ar-ion irradiation. Three of these were genes not previously described.

Abstract:
AbstractGradual solar energetic-particle (SEP) events are “big proton events” and are usually much more “gradual” in their decay than in their onset. As their intensities increase, particles streaming away from the shock amplify Alfvén waves that scatter subsequent particles, increasing their acceleration, eventually limiting ion flow at the “streaming limit.” Waves generated by higher-speed protons running ahead can also throttle the flow of lower-energy ions, flattening spectra and altering abundances in the biggest SEP events. Thus, we find that the A/Q-dependence of scattering causes element-abundance patterns varying in space and time, which define source-plasma temperatures T, since the pattern of Q values of the ions depends upon temperature. Differences in T explain much of the variation of element abundances in gradual SEP events. In nearly 70% of gradual events, SEPs are shock-accelerated from ambient coronal plasma of ~0.8–1.6 MK, while 24% of the events involve material with T ≈ 2–4 MK re-accelerated from residual impulsive-suprathermal ions with pre-enhanced abundances. This source-plasma temperature can occasionally vary with solar longitude across the face of a shock. Non-thermal variations in ion abundances in gradual SEP events reaccelerated from the 2–4 MK impulsive source plasma are reduced, relative to those in the original impulsive SEPs, probably because the accelerating shock waves sample a pool of ions from multiple jet sources. Late in gradual events, SEPs become magnetically trapped in a reservoir behind the CME where spectra are uniform in space and decrease adiabatically in time as the magnetic bottle containing them slowly expands. Finally, we find variations of the He/O abundance ratio in the source plasma of different events.

Abstract:
Abstract“A single atomic particle forever floating at rest in free space” (H. Dehmelt) would be the ideal object for precision measurements of atomic properties and for tests of fundamental theories. Such an ideal, of course, can ultimately never be achieved. A very close approximation to this ideal is made possible by ion traps, where electromagnetic forces are used to confine charged particles under well-controlled conditions for practically unlimited time. Concurrently, sensitive detection methods have been developed to allow observation of single stored ions. Various cooling methods can be employed to bring the trapped ion nearly to rest. Among different realisations of ion traps we consider in this chapter the so-called Penning traps which use static electric and magnetic fields for ion confinement. After a brief discussion of Penning-trap properties, we consider various experiments including the application of the “continuous Stern-Gerlach effect”, which have led recently to precise determinations of the masses and magnetic moments of particles and antiparticles. These serve as input for testing fundamental theories and symmetries.

Abstract:
The characteristics of radiation potentially available from proposed rf-linac free electron lasers1 are considered here for precision spectroscopy of highly-charged ions. Such ions are usually produced in environments not conducive to precision measurements, such as high temperature plasmas or fast ion beams. However, highly-charged recoil ions with eV energies have been produced by impact of fast, stripped ions on atomic targets2, and, using synchrotron radiation, multi-charged ions have been formed at thermal energies by K-shell photoionization followed by Auger emission and electron shake-off3. Using each of these cold ion sources, multi-charged ions have been stored under ultra-high vacuum conditions in Penning4,5 or radio-frequency6 ion traps, while maintaining the low energies at which the ions were generated. Long term storage at low energy in a near perturbation-free environment is consequently a reality for multi-charged ions, and experiments can be designed to exploit these properties for both spectroscopic7 and collision8 measurements. In particular, we discuss precision measurements on hydrogen-like multi-charged ions analagous to measurements on singly-charged alkalai-like ion hyperfine structures made using conventional pulsed laser techniques.9 Precision measurements of interest include, for example, studies of the Z-dependence of the Lamb shift in hydrogen-like and helium-like ions, and studies of the fine structure of helium-like ion n=2 states.

Abstract:
The average concentration of ions in a liquid depends on the size of a channel if the charges on solid surface do not change. The relation between them is that the concentration of ions is inversely proportional to the channel size. When a channel decreases from a micro to a nano size, the concentration of ions will increase 1000 times. In this case, the ion’s distribution in liquid may not be considered as dilute if the charges on solid surface is large, and interactions among ions have to take into account. In this paper, molecular dynamics is applied to study the effect of extra-pairs of positive/negative ions on liquid transport properties in a nano syringe under a constant injection flow rate boundary condition. In simulations, the Coulomb’s law and 12-6 Lennard-Jones potential are used to govern the interaction between ion-ion, ion-liquid, ion-solid, liquid-liquid and liquid-solid molecules. Four different cases (no ions, counter-ions, and counter-ions combining with small and large extra-pairs of positive/negative ions in liquid) are carried out. The non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation results show that the concentration of extra-pairs of positive/negative ions has significant influence on liquid velocity profile and ion distributions. For liquid flow without ions, a quasi-parabolic velocity distribution was obtained. When the counter-ions and extra-pairs of positive/negative ions are considered, the flow approaches a plug flow as the number of extra-pair of ions increases. We also found that charges in liquid do not follow the Poisson-Boltzmann distribution, especially for the net charges which have a valley located at about 1.5 molecular sizes away from the solid surface.

Abstract:
Extensive studies of implantation of ions into near surface areas of materials have demonstrated significant improvement of such properties as surface tension, friction and durability. The cost of implanted ions is currently rather high due to the limited ion current density of the usual ion sources, especially if ions from other than gaseous plasma sources must be used. The advent of laser-driven ion sources, with 2-3 orders of magnitude higher currents than classical ion sources, may change the scenario for a wide range of applications, making ion implantation as crucial a manufacturing technology in the future for other industries as it is today for microelectronics.

Abstract:
The principal accomplishment of the research supported by BARD was progress toward a comprehensive view of cell-surface electrical effects (both in cell walls [CWs] and at plasma membrane [PM] surfaces) upon ion uptake, intoxication, and amelioration. The research confirmed that electrostatic models (e.g., Gouy-Chapman-Stern [G-C-S]), with parameter values contributed by us, successfully predict ion behavior at cell surfaces. Specific research objectives 1. To characterize the sorption of selected heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) to the root PM in the presence of other cations and organic ligands (citric and humic acids). 2. To compute the parameters of a G-C-S model for heavy-metal sorption to the root PM. 3. To characterize the accumulation of selected heavy metals in various plant parts. 4. To determine whether model-computed ion binding or ion activities at root PM surfaces predict heavy-metal accumulation in whole roots, root tips, or plant shoots. 5. To determine whether measured ion binding by protoplast-free roots (i.e., root CWs) predicts heavy-metal accumulation in whole roots, root tips, or plant shoots. 6. To correlate growth inhibition, and other toxic responses, with the measured and computed factors mentioned above. 7. To determine whether genotypic differences in heavy-metal accumulation and toxic responses correlate with genotypic differences in parameters of the G-C-S model. Of the original objectives, all except for objective 7 were met. Work performed to meet the other objectives, and necessitated on the basis of experimental findings, took the time that would have been required to meet objective 7. In addition, work with Pb was unsuccessful due to experimental complications and work on Cd is still in progress. On the other hand, the uptake and toxicity of the anion, selenate was characterized with respect to electrostatic effects and the influences of metal cations. In addition, the project included more theoretical work, supported by experimentation, than was originally planned. This included transmembrane ion fluxes considered in terms of PM-surface electrical potentials and the influence of CWs upon ion concentrations at PM surfaces. A important feature of the biogeochemistry of trace elements in the rhizosphere is the interaction between plant-root surfaces and the ions present in the soil solution. The ions, especially the cations, of the soil solution may be accumulated in the aqueous phases of cell surfaces external to the PMs, sometimes referred to as the "water free space" and the "Donnan free space". In addition, ions may bind to the CW components or to the PM surface with variable binding strength. Accumulation at the cell surface often leads to accumulation in other plant parts with implications for the safety and quality of foods. A G-C-S model for PMs and a Donnan-plus-binding model for CWs were used successfully to compute electrical potentials, ion binding, and ion concentration at root-cell surfaces. With these electrical potentials, corresponding values for ion activities may be computed that are at least proportional to actual values also. The computed cell-surface ion activities predict and explain ion uptake, intoxication, and amelioration of intoxication much more accurately than ion activities in the bulk-phase rooting medium.

Abstract:
A model framework for natural water has been developed using computational chemistry techniques to elucidate the interactions between solvated munition compounds and eight common ions in naturally occurring water sources. The interaction energies, residence times, coordination statistics, and surface preferences of nine munition related compounds with each ion were evaluated. The propensity of these interactions to increase degradation of the munition compound was predicted using accelerated replica QM/MM simulations. The degradation prediction data qualitatively align with previous quantum mechanical studies. The results suggest that primary ions of interest for fate and transport modeling of munition compounds in natural waters may follow the relative importance of SO₄²⁻, Cl⁻ ≫ HCO₃⁻, Na⁺, Mg²⁺ > Ca²⁺, K⁺, and NH₄⁺.

Abstract:
In this technical report (TR), a robust, readily synthesized molecule with a ferrocene core appended with one or two boronic acid moieties was designed, synthesized, and used toward F- (free fluoride) detection. Through Lewis acid-base interactions, the boronic acid derivatives are capable of binding with F- in an aqueous solution via ligand exchange reaction and is specific to fluoride ion. Fluoride binding to ferrocene causes significant changes in fluorescence or electrochemical responses that can be monitored with field-portable instrumentation at concentrations below the WHO recommended limit. The F- binding interaction was further monitored via proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR). In addition, fluorescent spectroscopy of the boronic acid moiety and electrochemical monitoring of the ferrocene moiety will allow detection and estimation of F- concentration precisely in a solution matrix. The current work shows lower detection limit (LOD) of ~15 μM (285 μg/L) which is below the WHO standards. Preliminary computational calculations showed the boronic acid moieties attached to the ferrocene core interacted with the fluoride ion. Also, the ionization diagrams indicate the amides and the boronic acid groups can be ionized forming strong ionic interactions with fluoride ions in addition to hydrogen bonding interactions.
