Abstract:
Il funzionamento di una pila si basa essenzialmente su reazioni di ossido - riduzione, in cui una specie chimica si ossida perdendo elettroni mentre una seconda specie chimica si riduce acquistando gli elettroni persi dalla prima specie. Questo movimento di elettroni dal riducente all’ossidante non è altro che una corrente elettrica. Riuscire a definire l’andamento delle curve di carica e scarica delle batterie permette di capire in quale maniera si comporta il sistema se viene caricato o scaricato sotto certe condizioni operative piuttosto che altre; di conseguenza ciò permette di scegliere in maniera accurata le migliori condizioni di funzionamento della batteria, vale a dire i valori di corrente di scarica e di temperatura. Scopo principale di questo lavoro è quello di caratterizzare in maniera più accurata possibile alcuni modelli di batteria Litio - ione, cercando di riprodurne matematicamente le curve di carica e scarica: ciò è possibile grazie all’utilizzo di opportuni modelli elettrico - sperimentali da implementare all’interno di un ambiente di calcolo numerico. L'obiettivo finale del lavoro è quello di trovare dei parametri caratteristici, che siano esprimibili secondo una stessa equazione in funzione della corrente di scarica e della temperatura. In questo modo sarà possibile estendere il modello ad ogni batteria Litio - ione e costruire un modello unificato per poter prevedere il comportamento di una qualsiasi batteria Litio - ione durante la sua scarica.

Abstract:
Nell’era dell’Internet of Things i sensori chimici indossabili rappresentano una frontiera avanzata nel campo delle analisi cliniche. La possibilità di integrare questo tipo di sensori su una vasta gamma di substrati tessili, in tandem a dei sistemi elettronici di lettura wireless, rende tali dispositivi estremamente versatili, permettendo all’utente finale di monitorare in tempo reale le concentrazioni degli analiti di interesse biologico in fluidi corporei, consentendo la diagnosi di potenziali patologie, la corretta somministrazione di farmaci o più semplicemente il controllo dello stato di buona salute. In questo elaborato sono stati dunque sviluppati dei sensori chimici indossabili, basati sul polimero conduttore PEDOT:PSS (applicato sotto forma di inchiostro per stampa serigrafica) in sinergia con materiali tessili per uso medico (forniti dall’azienda Plastod S.p.A. di Bologna), per la determinazione della concentrazione di ione cloruro nel sudore e del pH in essudato di ferita, attraverso la funzionalizzazione del PEDOT:PSS con particelle di Ag/AgCl e particelle di iridio ossido (IrOx). L’architettura del dispositivo, che è ispirata ai transistor elettrochimici organici (OECTs - Organic ElectroChemical Transistors), è in grado di generare un effetto di “gate” elettrochimico che permette un’amplificazione intrinseca del segnale. Inoltre, la struttura è notevolmente semplificata grazie alla presenza di soli due terminali sul dispositivo rispetto ai classici tre degli OECT. La fabbricazione dei dispositivi è stata ottimizzata attraverso lo studio della produzione dei contatti elettrici tessili e della formulazione dell’inchiostro per stampa serigrafica, mentre le prestazioni sensoristiche sono state valutate tramite applicazione di potenziali costanti durante analisi tradizionali nelle quali il dispositivo era immerso nella soluzione investigata ed analisi in flusso ideate in modo da simulare la sudorazione o la produzione di essudato da parte di una ferita.

Abstract:
Il s'agit d'une recherche sur la modernite au bresil, attachee exclusivement a l'univers des arts plastiques, comprise entre les annees i 1920 et 1980. Cette analyse se penche sur les oeuvres de tarsila, ione et oiticica. L'objectif a ete de detecter puis d'analyser les signes de rupture dans les oeuvres de ces artistes, et, par consequent, les boulversements qu'ils ont introduit a l'interieur de la culture bresilienne. Je suis partie de la presomption qu'il n'y a pas de concept unique de modernite et qu'il y a autant de modernite que d'epoques. Une autre question qui a ete abordee c'etait celle de la modernite au "tiers monde". La recherche a demontre que ces trois artistes ont instaure des langues nouveaux, ayant toutefois subi des heritages. Ils ont ete profondement influences par les mouvements d'avavt-garde europeens, surtout tarsila et ione. Oiticica a antecipe l'art corporel et l'art environnemental. L'influence europeenne et le primitif bresilien, la recherche de l'identite et l'inauguration d'une langue universel, definissent ces fragments de modernite. Ce sont des modernites qui sont effectuees par des biais differents, a savoir, par l'identite tarsila, par la recherche de la dimension esthetique, c'est-a-dire l'autonomie de l'hestetique - ione et, finalement, par l'option d'eprou- ver l'experimental - oiticica, ce qui l'a conduit au-dela de l'esthetique
Thie thesis consists in a research on modernity in brazil, exclusively linked to the universe of plastic arts, between 1920 and 1980. This analysis into the works of tarsila. Ione and oiticica. The objective was to detect and then to analyse the signs of changes of tone in the works of these artist and, comsequently the upheavals they introduced into brazilian culture. I started from the assumption that is no unique concept of modernity and that are as many modernities as eras, another question was also tackled, which was modernity in the "third world". The research showed that these three artists instituted new languages, although they were under the influence of heritages. They were deeply influencied by the avant-garde european, especially tarsila and ione. Oiticica antecipated body art and environmental art. The european influence and the brazilian primitive, the search for identity and the inauguration of a universal characterize these fragments of modernity. These are modernities that are achieved through different means, namely through identity - tarsila -, through the search for aesthetic dif- mension - ione - and lastly, through the option of testing the experi- mental - oiticica - which led him beyond aesthetics

In questo lavoro di tesi si intende fornire un'analisi in chiave quantomeccanica di una serie di caratteristiche della molecola di idrogeno ionizzata. Il fatto che l'equazione di Schrödinger per l'elettrone sia nel caso di H2+ risolvibile in maniera esatta rende questo sistema fisico un prezioso banco di prova per qualsiasi metodo di approssimazione. Il lavoro svolto in questa trattazione consisterà proprio nella risoluzione dell'equazione d'onda per l'elettrone nel suo stato fondamentale, dapprima in maniera esatta poi mediante LCAO, e successivamente nell'analisi dei risultati ottenuti, che verranno dapprima discussi e interpretati in chiave fisica, e infine messi a confronto per la verifica della bontà dell'approssimazione. Il metodo approssimato fornirà approssimazioni relative anche al primo stato elettronico eccitato; anche questo verrà ampiamente discusso, e ci si soffermerà in particolare sulla caratterizzazione di orbitali di "legame" e di "antilegame", e sul loro rapporto con la stabilità dello ione molecolare.

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado da Bahia - FAPESB
O presente trabalho caracteriza-se como resultado final de um experimento realizado no Mestrado Profissional em Música da Universidade Federal da Bahia. Pretende-se aqui, explanar, de um modo geral, o conceito de Rítmica Corporal, assim como demonstrar como a prática dos exercícios deste sistema de ensino pode trazer contribuições ao desenvolvimento performático musical. Além disso, será abordada a Rítmica do suíço Émile Jacques-Dalcroze e a Rítmica Corporal da brasileira Ione de Medeiros. Sendo vivenciada em um contexto orquestral, será exposta a Rítmica Corporal de Ione de Medeiros (RCIM) sendo abordada, adaptada e aplicada aos integrantes do Naipe das Madeiras da Orquestra Castro Alves – grupo pertencente aos Núcleos Estaduais de Orquestras Juvenis e Infantis da Bahia (NEOJIBA) – com o intuito de aferir - através de análises de gravações em vídeo – uma possível influência contribuidora da RCIM no desenvolvimento do domínio de elementos da prática orquestral por parte dos integrantes do referido grupo.
This text is characterized as part of experiment in Professional Master of Music degree from the Federal University of Bahia. It is intended here, to explain, on the whole, the concept of Body Rhythmic, as well as demonstrate how the exercises in this education system should contribute to the development musical performative. Also, will be addressed the Swiss Émile Jacques-Dalcroze’s Rhythmic and the Brazilian Ione de Medeiros’ Body Rhythmic. Being held in an orchestral context, will be exposed the Ione de Medeiros’ Body Rhythmic (IMBR) being addressed, adapted and applied to the members of the Castro Alves Orchestra’ Woods Suit - group belongs to the State Centers of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Bahia (NEOJIBA) - in order to assess - by analysis of video recordings – a possible IMBR’s influence contributor the development in the field of orchestral practice’s elements among members of that group.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the bodily experience of rhythm in space-time through expressive movement present in the Ione de Medeiros Body Rhythmics practice. Medeiros began to develop her Body Rhythmics in the field of music education at Fundação de Educação Artística, in the 1970s. Later, the artist-teacher included this practice in the actors body training of Grupo Oficcina Multimedia. Documentary, experimental and bibliographical researches were made to investigate the cognitive and affective characteristics experienced in Medeiros Body Rhythmics. The documentary research was done in 75 artist-teachers notebooks containing three decades of registration (1970-1999). The experimental research consisted of the application of the neuropsychological tests Raven and Continuous Performance Test-CPTs Conners. The bibliographical research was made on authors from the Cognitive Sciences and Art Education field. The methods used for data collection were literature review, participant observation, questionnaires and interviews. For data analysis it was used content analysis and statistics. The qualitative and quantitative data analysis has demonstrated a strong presence of Dalcroze principles in Ione de Medeiros Body Rhythmics and a positive change in the attentional paradigm of reaction time after the Body Rhythmics practice. From these findings it is possible to say that the body experience in Medeiros practice has the somaesthetic, enactive and inventive dimensions which promote the embodied knowledge built through this artistic practice. This Knowledge comes from the shared learning presence state training.
A experiência corporal do ritmo no espaço-tempo por meio do movimento expressivo na Rítmica Corporal de Ione de Medeiros é o tema desta tese. A artista-professora começou a desenvolver sua abordagem corporal do ritmo no campo do ensino de música na Fundação de Educação Artística na década de 1970. Posteriormente, Medeiros incluiu esta prática artística na preparação corporal dos atores do Grupo Oficcina Multimédia, da Fundação de Educação Artística de Belo Horizonte. Para investigar acerca das especificidades cognitivas e afetivas experimentadas na Rítmica Corporal proposta por Ione de Medeiros, foram feitas pesquisas documental, de referências e experimental. A pesquisa documental foi realizada em 75 cadernos da artista-professora, que abrangem três décadas de trabalho (1970-1999). Na pesquisa de referências, trabalhou-se com autores oriundos das Ciências Cognitivas e do Ensino de Arte. A pesquisa experimental constou da aplicação dos testes neuropsicológicos Raven e Teste de Desempenho Contínuo Corners CPTII. Os métodos utilizados para coleta dos dados foram a revisão de literatura, observação participante e aplicação de questionários e entrevistas. Para análise dos dados, empregaram-se análise de conteúdo e estatística. A análise quali-quantitativa dos dados evidenciou forte presença de princípios dalcrozianos na Rítmica Corporal de Ione de Medeiros e uma alteração positiva no paradigma atencional do tempo de reação após sua prática. A partir desses dados, pôde-se compreender a experiência do corpo na rítmica de Medeiros como uma rede composta pelas dimensões somaestética, enativa e inventiva e que promove um conhecimento corporificado proveniente da aprendizagem compartilhada do exercício do estado de presença.

Analisi di sicurezza funzionale di un pacco batteria agli ioni di litio che può essere utilizzata nel campo dell’automotive. Studio delle celle agli ioni di litio e della loro sicurezza e individuazione degli eventi pericolosi in cui si può incorrere durante il loro utilizzo. Elaborazione di un modello funzionale che descriva il sistema, i suoi componenti, le funzioni che devono svolgere durante il normale funzionamento, le interfacce e le modalità operative. In seguito ad un processo di ottimizzazione sono state individuate la 9-epi-NH2-QDA come miglior catalizzatore e le condizioni operative ottimali in grado di fornire elevati livelli di eccesso enantiomerico e resa. Ci si è spinti inoltre a valutare il livello di applicabilità della reazione ad altri substrati, riscontrando una diminuzione sia dell’eccesso enantiomerico che della resa rispetto alla reazione di partenza.

Hochgeladene Ionen stellen einen extremen Zustand der Materie dar, wie sie vornehmlich in kosmischen Plasmen zu finden ist. Die labormäßige Erzeugung und (spektroskopische) Untersuchung hochgeladener Ionen liefert wichtige Daten und Erkenntnisse für die Astrophysik und Fusionsforschung. Aufgrund ihrer zum Teil exotischen Eigenschaften besitzen hochgeladene Ionen ein großes Potential für eine Vielzahl neuer Anwendungen. Die bisher weltweit einzige Elektronenstrahl-Ionenfalle, die hochgeladene Ionen bis hin zu vollständig ionisierten Ionen unter Raumtemperaturbedingungen erzeugen und bereitstellen kann, die Dresden EBIT, ist Gegenstand der vorgelegten Arbeit. Die Dresden EBIT zeichnet sich neben ihrer Kompaktheit und einer einfachen Bedienung durch ihre Langzeitstabilität aus. Sowohl über Röntgenspektren als auch über die Extraktion der Ionen aus der EBIT konnte für eine Reihe von Elementen der Nachweis der Erzeugung von vollständig ionisierten Ionen bis Z=28 erbracht werden. Für schwere Elemente können Ionenladungszustände bis hin zu neonähnlichen Ionen erzeugt werden. Entscheidenden Einfluss auf den erzielten mittleren Ladungszustand hat die Ioneneinschlusszeit. Die zeitliche Entwicklung der Ladungszustandsverteilung, wie sie im Zusammenspiel der verschiedenen atomaren Prozesse simuliert werden kann, ist sowohl an einer Reihe von röntgenspektroskopischen Messungen als auch anhand von Extraktionsspektren untersucht worden. Neben der Beladung der EBIT mit gasförmigen Elementen ist insbesondere die Beladung mit Metallen, d. h. mit einem möglichst breiten Spektrum an Elementen gefordert. Die Beladung mit leichtflüchtigen metallorganischen Verbindungen, die über das Gaseinlassventil eingebracht werden können, hat sich als erfolgreiche und preiswerte Alternative zu einer MEVVA-Quelle erwiesen. Die Beladung mit Metallionen ist am Beispiel verschiedener Untersuchungen gezeigt. Der monoenergetische Elektronenstrahl gestattet neben der Untersuchung von Anregungs- und Ionisationsprozessen insbesondere die der wichtigen Rekombinationsprozesse des Strahlenden Einfangs und der Dielektronischen Rekombination. Der Einsatz eines Kristalldiffraktionsspektrometers erlaubt trotz einer aufwendigen Kalibrierung und sehr langen Messzeiten die Auflösung einzelner Übergänge in hochgeladenen Ionen. Hauptanwendungsfeld der Dresden EBIT wird der Einsatz als Ionenquelle sein. Aus den Untersuchungen des extrahierten Gesamtionenstroms können die Bedingungen für einen möglichst großen Ionenstrom und einen optimalen Ionenstrahltransport abgeleitet werden. Eine optimale Ausnutzung der Eigenschaften hochgeladener Ionen erfordert die Separation der einzelnen Ladungszustände. Der Nachweis der sehr kleinen Ionenströme erfolgt über die kapazitive Messung in einem Faradaycup. Die Messung der Ladungszustandsverteilung in Abhängigkeit von den Parametern der EBIT gibt zusätzliche Aufschlüsse über die Eigenschaften der Ionenfalle.

Il presente elaborato di tesi affronta un tema di grande attualità: la corsa alla mobilità elettrica che vede il litio come elemento protagonista della propulsione del futuro; le batterie derivanti da questo elemento, rappresentano infatti, una soluzione tecnologica per raggiungere la neutralità climatica e sostituzione dei combustibili fossili. Da questo presupposto è sorta la necessità di comprendere più profondamente quali fossero le complesse implicazioni sociali, economiche ed ambientali, nonché le possibili conseguenze in termini di sicurezza relative al litio, al fine di definire delle linee guida sotto il profilo della sicurezza antincendio, per la corretta progettazione degli organismi edilizi che ospitano dispositivi ricaricabili ed in particolare quelli contenenti batterie agli ioni di litio. Questa trattazione sarà accompagnata da un’elaborazione analitica dei dati raccolti con l’intento di comprendere le quantità in gioco, le tendenze del mercato e di offrire una panoramica sugli obbiettivi internazionali posti dai vari paesi sul tema della mobilità elettrica, proiettandoli agli anni individuati come fondamentali per ridurre le drammatiche conseguenze dei cambiamenti climatici (2050), con tutte le implicazioni che potrebbero comprometterne la riuscita. Application of precision laser spectroscopy and optical clock technology to the ground and metastable, first excited state of the ²²⁹Th nucleus at < 10 eV has significant potential for use in optical frequency metrology and tests of variation of fundamental constants. This work is a report on the development of required technologies to realize such a nuclear optical clock with a single, trapped, laser cooled ²²⁹Th³⁺ ion. Creation, trapping, laser cooling, and precision spectroscopy are developed and refined first with the naturally occurring isotope, ²³²Th. These technologies are then extended to laser cooling and precision laser spectroscopy of the electronic structure of ²²⁹Th³⁺. An efficient optical excitation search protocol to directly observe this transition via the electron bridge is proposed. The extraordinarily small systematic clock shifts are estimated and the likely extraordinarily large sensitivity of the clock to variation of the fine structure constant is discussed.

Ce travail de these a ete centre sur l'etude des proprietes de retention de l'iode dans la zircone et la determination de donnees thermodynamiques qui permettent une extrapolation aux conditions de stockage des resultats obtenus a des temperatures relativement elevees. L'iode stable et radioactif sont introduits par implantation ionique dans du zirconium oxyde a l'air. Les evolutions des profils de distribution et de la perte d'iode sont determinees apres recuit sous flux d'air, par une technique d'analyse par faisceau d'ions et par spectroscopie. Le materiau est aussi caracterise par microscopie electronique a balayage, diffraction x en incidence rasante et par la mesure de la cinetique d'oxydation. Nous avons distingue deux phases dans le relachement de l'iode lors des recuits : une phase rapide liee aux degats d'irradiation ; une phase lente liee a l'evolution de la structure du materiau lors des recuits. Ainsi, dans la phase lente, deux coefficients de diffusion differents ont ete determines, l'un dans la zircone compacte et l'autre dans la zircone poreuse.

In this thesis, I present experimental results demonstrating the characterization of a planar Paul trap. I discuss the theory of ion trapping and analyze the voltages required for shuttling. Next, the characteristics of a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) are calibrated, and this instrument is integrated into trapping experiments to test the viability of the analytic model. Combining theory with the capabilities of the DAC, I calculate that the new experimental system is capable of 3 nm-precision control of the ion. Taking advantage of this ion control, I present initial results for a lock-in micromotion detection method which minimizes stray fields around an ⁸⁸Sr+ ion using Fourier analysis on the ion fluorescence to detect resonance at the secular frequencies. This method drives the ion oscillator across resonance using a superimposed radiofrequency electric field, which allows for off-axis field measurements as well as trap characterization. With this method, the secular frequencies of the trap are measured and are observed to fall within 3.50[sigma] of the analytic prediction.

Abstract:
Das Hauptziel einer Strahlentherapie, die möglichst vollständige Vernichtung des Tumorgewebes bei einer höchstmöglichen Schonung des umliegenden Gewebes und der Risikoorgane, kann mit Kohlenstoffionen besser als mit Elektronen oder Gammastrahlung erreicht werden. Ionen haben ein inverses Tiefen-Dosisprofil, sie geben einen Großteil ihrer Energie am Ende ihres Weges durch Materie ab. Dieses Energieabgabeverhalten, die wohl definierte Reichweite und die erhöhte biologische Wirksamkeit im Tumor prädestinieren zum Beispiel Kohlenstoffionen für die Behandlung inoperabler, gegen konventionell eingesetzte Strahlung resistenter Tumoren. Allerdings führen diese Eigenschaften der Strahlung auch dazu, dass Veränderungen der Dichte der Materie im Strahlweg zu einer Verschiebung des Maximums der Energieabgabe und damit zu einer deutlichen Veränderung der Dosisverteilung führen. Ein Monitoring der reichweitesensitiven Ionenbestrahlungen ist somit erforderlich. Die Positronen-Emissions-Tomographie (PET), die normalerweise dazu benutzt wird, die Verteilung eines injizierten Positronenemitters im Gewebe zu bestimmen, kann hier eingesetzt werden. Durch Kernreaktionen der einfliegenden Kohlenstoffionen mit Atomkernen des Gewebes kommt es zur Erzeugung von Positronenemittern, die über ihren Zerfall mit dem an der experimentellen Therapieanlage an der Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung installierten in-beam PET-Scanner nachgewiesen werden können. Da die Dosisverteilung und die erzeugte Aktivitätsverteilung durch verschiedene physikalische Prozesse bedingt sind, ist ein direkter Vergleich der PET-Messung mit der von den Ärzten und Medizinphysikern festgelegten Dosisverteilung nicht möglich. Aus der Dosisverteilung und dem Zeit-ablauf der Bestrahlung wird eine Vorhersage der Aktivitätsverteilung berechnet, die dann mit der Messung verglichen wird. Auf der Grundlage dieses Vergleiches ist die in-beam PET-Methode in der Lage, während der Behandlung Reichweiteabweichungen im Patienten, Ungenauigkeiten in der Positionierung und auch Fehler im physikalischen Strahlmodell aufzuzeigen. Trotz einer guten Anpassung der in der Vorausberechnung verwendeten physikalischen Modelle an die Realität kommt es zu Abweichungen, die nicht mit einer ungenauen Dosisapplikation begründbar sind. Diese sind zum größten Teil durch die metabolischen Vorgänge im Patienten bedingt, an denen die Positronenemitter teilnehmen. Diese Washout-Prozesse sind zwischen verschiedenen Patienten und verschiedenen Behandlungstagen nicht reproduzierbar. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde eine Quantifizierung des Washouts in Abhängigkeit verschiedener Parameter vorgenommen, deren Berücksichtigung zur Verbesserung der Vorausberechnung führt. Um eine flexiblere Positionierung des Patienten am raumfesten Bestrahlungssystem der GSI zu ermöglichen, wurde an der GSI ein Bestrahlungsstuhl entwickelt. Um auch bei der Bestrahlung sitzender Patienten eine in-beam PET-Messung zu ermöglichen, sind die beiden Detektor-Einheiten der PET-Kamera um die Strahlachse drehbar. Durch die hohe Eigenmasse der Detektoren kommt es jedoch zu Deformationen der idealen Kreisbahn. Um eine ortsgenaue Rekonstruktion der Daten zu ermöglichen, müssen diese Deformationen quantifiziert und korrigiert werden. Dies war ein weiteres Anliegen dieser Arbeit. Das wichtigste Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation jedoch war, die in-beam PET-Methode auf neue Ionensorten zu erweitern. Es wurde gezeigt, dass die in-beam PET-Methode auch für 3He-Bestrahlungen angewendet werden kann. Dafür wurden Experimente an einem 3He-Strahl durchgeführt. Die Aktivitätsausbeute ist bei gleicher applizierter Dosis etwa dreimal so hoch wie bei 12C-Bestrahlungen. Die erreichbare Reichweite-Auflösung ist kleiner als 1 mm. Bei der Bestrahlung eines inhomogenen Phantoms wurde gezeigt, dass ein Kontrast zwischen verschiedenen Materialien auflösbar ist. Aus den experimentell bestimmten Reaktionsraten wurden Wirkungsquerschnitte für zu Positronenemittern führende Reaktionen abgeschätzt. Die in den 3He-Experimenten genommenen Daten wurden denen in Kohlenstoff-Ionen-Experimenten gewonnen sowie Literaturdaten für Protonenbestrahlungen gegenübergestellt. Ein Vergleich mit den Rechnungen des Simulationsprogrammes Shield-Hit erfolgte. Eine Zusammenstellung von Wirkungsquerschnittsmodellen und die aufgestellten Anforderungen an ein für in-beam PET verwendbares Simulationsprogramm sind vorbereitend für weitere Arbeiten.

Column runs with varied operation conditions of flowrate, feed concentration and particle size have been conducted to observe the sorption of nickel, copper and zinc by the chelating resin. They all show a typical constant-pattern, steep curve in the first part of the breakthrough curve and the slope would dramatically reduce at a breakpoint such that it would take extremely long time to reach 100% breakthrough level. ~ The Modified Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) model incorporated with a timedependent bed capacity has been used together with the Empty Bed Residence Time (EBRT) model to analyze the fixed bed performance under different operating conditions. The Homogeneous Surface Diffusion Model (HSDM) and the Shrinking Core Diffusion . Model (SCDM) have been applied to- model the fixed bed performance. Due to the dramatic change in the slope, the first and second parts of the breakthrough curves need to be modeled separately. Comparing the two models, SCDM is more appropriate to explain the sorption of metal ions into the chelating resin. The research has suggested the existence of a Na-loaded outer shell and a H-loaded inner core in the chelating resin. When the moving boundary progresses from the outer shell into the inner core, there is a remarkable change in the ion exchange process, resulting in different kinetics. This explains the sharp change in the slope of the experimental breakthrough curves. A new version of SCDM has been developed to model the progression of the moving boundary inside the resin for the successive resin layers along the whole resin column so as to predict the column' s solid and liquid phase concentration profiles. The new SCDM has. the flexibility of varying the portion of the outer shell so that the behavior of resins with different resin Na contents can be predicted.

While quantum information processing offers a tantalizing possibility of a significant speedup in execution of certain algorithms, as well as enabling previously unmanageable simulations of large quantum systems, it remains extremely difficult to realize experimentally. Recently, fundamental building blocks of a quantum computer, including one and two qubit gates, teleportation and error correction, were demonstrated using trapped atomic ions. Scaling to a larger number of qubits requires miniaturization of the ion traps, currently limited by the sharply increasing motional state decoherence at sub-100 [mu]m ion-electrode distances. This thesis explores the source and suppression of this decoherence at cryogenic temperatures, and demonstrates fundamental logic gates in a surface electrode ion trap. Construction of the apparatus requires the development of a number of experimental techniques. Design, numerical simulation and implementation of a surface electrode ion trap is presented. Cryogenic cooling of the trap to near 4 K is accomplished by contact with a bath cryostat. Ions are loaded by ablation or photoionization, both of which are characterized in terms of generated stray fields and heat load. The bulk of new experimental results deals with measurements of electric field noise at the ion's position. Upon cooling to 6 K, the measured rates are suppressed by up to 7 orders of magnitude, more than two orders of magnitude below previously published data for similarly sized traps operated at room temperature. The observed noise depends strongly on fabrication process, which suggests further improvements are possible. The measured dependence of the electric field noise on temperature is inconsistent with published models, and can be explained using a continuous spectrum of activated fluctuators. The fabricated surface electrode traps are used to demonstrate coherent operations and the classical control required for trapped ion quantum computation. The necessary spectral properties of coherent light sources are achieved with a novel design using optical feedback to a triangular, medium finesse, cavity, followed by electronic feedback to an ultra-high finesse reference cavity.
(cont.) Single and two qubit operations on a single ion are demonstrated with classical fidelity in excess of 95%. Magnetic field gradient coils built into the trap allow for individual addressing of ions, a prerequisite to scaling to multiple qubits.

Ionic liquids are molten salts at room temperature that consist of positive and negative ions. These liquids can be used in electrosprays to produce ion beams. Ionic liquid ion source (ILIS) beams typically consist of single ions and solvated ions. It has been observed that solvated ions are not always stable and can break up into lighter ions midflight. Past experiments show that the stability of solvated ions depends on the molecular composition of the ionic liquid. Based on these results, it has been hypothesized that the stability of solvated ions increases with increasing molecular complexity of the ions. The focus of this work is to test this hypothesis by characterizing ionic liquids of different molecular complexities under controlled conditions. A time of flight mass spectrometer and a retarding potential analyzer were developed specifically for this purpose. The ion beam composition and energy distribution were measured at various temperatures and source voltages for each ionic liquid. With some exceptions, the observed trend was in agreement with the results of past experiments and with the hypothesis. The exceptions to the expected trend may have resulted from the limitations of the detectors. The data from this work can be used to test the hypothesis with moderate confidence. Future study requires improvements to the detectors, namely the retarding potential analyzer, so that the hypothesis can be evaluated more conclusively.

Abstract:
This work sets out a framework to provide a metrological basis for static SIMS measurements. This surface analytical technique has been is use for over thirty years but, because of the lack of an infrastructure, has not achieved its full potential in industry. To build this basis, the measurement chain is studied from the sample through to the detector and data processing. By understanding the effects of each link in the chain, repeatabilities are reduced by orders of magnitude to below 1%, the ion beam current and flux density are calibrated to better than 2%, ion beam damage in polymers is controlled and detection efficiencies calculated. Utilising these developments, a characterised and calibrated SIMS spectrometer is used to establish reference materials. An inter-laboratory study to assess the extent of spectrum variability between spectrometers was conducted involving over twenty laboratories worldwide. Analysis of the data gives the level of repeatability and reproducibility using current procedures. Repeatabilities for some laboratories are as good as 1% but many are at 10% and a few as poor as 80%. A Relative Instrument Spectral Response, RISR, is developed to facilitate the comparison of spectra from one instrument to another or library data. For most instruments reproducibilities of 14% are achievable. Additionally, the wide variety of ion beam sources and energies, presently in use, result in spectra that are only broadly comparable. A detailed study of these effects provides, for the first time, a unified method to relate the behaviour for all ion species and energies. A development of this work gives a totally new spectroscopy, known as G-SIMS or gentle-SIMS. Here, the static SIMS spectrum for a low surface plasma temperature is calculated which promotes those spectral intensities truly representative of the analysed material and reduces those caused by additional fragmentation and rearrangement mechanisms. The resulting GSIMS spectra are easier to identify and are interpreted more directly. This work provides the essential basis for the development of static SIMS. Future work will improve the consistency of library data so that the valid data for molecular identification can be uniquely extracted. The measurement base will be developed to meet the growing requirements for static SIMS analysis of complex organic and biomaterials.

Abstract:
Dual-host combinations of cation and anion sensors have unique potential for selective detection of ion pairs, such as NH4NO3, via solvent extraction. Selective sensors for NH4+ and NO3- were synthesized and used together for ion-pair sensing of ammonium nitrate both in organic solvents (using Bu4N+NO3 - and NH4+PF6-) and in extraction of NH4NO3 from water into dichloromethane. A fluorescent sensor for NH4+ based on 1,3,5-triethylbenzene shows remarkable binding and sensing selectivity for NH4+ vs. K+. Fluorescence and 1H-NMR titrations reveal surprising differences in sensing properties and binding constants for the tris-(3,5-dimethyl)pyrazole vs. the tris(3,5-diphenyl)pyrazole. The role of ion pairing and solvation is revealed by X-ray and theoretical DFT studies. We have also demonstrated a unique dual-host extraction-based ion-pair sensing paradigm using Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), showing selectivity for NH4NO3. The fluorescence emission of the NH4+ sensor tris-(3,5-dimethyl)pyrazole (305-340 nm), is compatible with the excitation wavelength of the dansyl fluorophore of the nitrate sensor 1,3,5-Tris-(5-dimethylamino-1-naphthalenesulfonamido)methyl]-2,4,6-triethylbenzene, thus resulting in FRET emission upon combined use of these two sensors for the NH4NO3 ion pair. Contact of dichloromethane solutions containing the two hosts with aqueous solutions of NH4NO3 (1 x 10-5 M to 1 x 10-4 M ), resulted in FRET fluorescence enhancements at 510 nm, with increasing concentrations of NH4NO3, while NaNO3, KNO3, NaCl and KCl showed only minimal fluorescence responses, under identical conditions. The ability of the tris-pyrazole to bind cations, such as NH4+, was also exploited in a detailed fluorescence and 1H-NMR Ln(III), binding study using tris-pyrazoles with varying substitution patterns. The dependence of fluorescence responses on pyrazole substitution that had been observed for NH4+ was also observed for different Ln(III), indicating the significant role of ion pairing for Ln(III) binding and fluorescence sensing. Likewise, the tris-dansyl nitrate receptor, in its deprotonated form, was also found to be an efficient Hg(II) fluorescent sensor. An X-ray crystal structure showed the ability of the trianionic version of this receptor to bind three Hg(II) atoms, also containing three CH3COO- counteranions. The X-ray crystal structure of the same receptor with HgCl2 gave a 2:1 complexation pattern, with one Hg atom complexed by two bis-deprotonated receptor molecules

This study is the first phase of an investigation into an alternative process to recover base metals from solution, namely ion exchange. An identified ion exchange resin was employed to study the recovery of copper, nickel and cobalt from electrolytic solutions. The main focus of the investigation was the prediction of equilibrium conditions in this multi-component system using a batch configuration. In order to predict equilibrium conditions. existing multi-component isotherms such as Fritz and Schleunder were tested. It has been shown that traditional isothem15 did not accurately predict equilibrium conditions. hence the need for development of new isotherms. Essentially two approaches were followed in the development of new isotherms namely. an effective concentration approach as well as a heat transfer approach. Both yielded positive outcomes with the effective concentration approach proving to be the most accurate. In addition to these two approaches a thermodynamical approach was also tested which also showed favourable predictions for Cu loading

In dieser Arbeit werden Modellsysteme der Wechselwirkung von Atomen, Molekülen und deren Ionen mit Festkörperoberflächen studiert. Die Dissertation besteht aus drei Teilen. Im ersten Teil werden Experimente zur Streuung von He0 und He+ mit keV Energien unter streifendem Einfall an Al(111), Al(100) und Al(110) vorgestellt. Anteile überlebender Ionen und Verschiebungen der Winkelverteilungen für einlaufende Atome und Ionen sind in guter Übereinstimmung mit theoretischen Auger-Neutralisationsraten und He-1s-Grundzustandsenergieverschiebungen. Damit liegt ein detailliertes mikroskopisches Verständnis dieses Modellsystems der Atom-Oberflächen-Wechselwirkung vor. Die Studien wurden auf Edelgase und Oberflächen mit komplexerer elektronischer Struktur sowie Ionisationsprozesse erweitert. Im zweiten Teil wird die Formierung von doppelt-angeregten He-Atomen bei der Streuung von He2+ an Ni(110) und Fe(110) mittels Autoionisationsspektren studiert. Diese zeigen eine ausgeprägte Sensitivität auf die Belegung der Oberflächen mit Adsorbaten und deren Umordnung, Desorption bzw. Lösung im Volumen des Festkörpers bei Erhöhung der Temperatur. In diesem Rahmen ergibt sich eine alternative Interpretation aktueller Arbeiten, in denen Autoionisationsspektren zur Ableitung der Spin-Polarisation von Ni- und und Fe-Oberflächen verwendet wurden. Im dritten Teil werden Winkelverteilungen, Fragmentspektren und Ladungsanteile für die streifende Streuung von C60-Molekülionen mit an Al(100), Be(0001) und LiF(100) studiert. Es wird gezeigt, dass die elastischen Eigenschaften des Fullerens durch Metalloberflächen stark modifiziert werden. Anhand von Verschiebungen von Winkelverteilungen für einfach- und zweifach-geladene einlaufende Ionen werden erstmalig Abstände des Elektroneneinfangs für positiv geladene Fullerenionen vor Metalloberflächen gemessen. Für LiF(100) treten ausgeprägte Anregungen der Moleküle durch das periodische elektrische Feld der Oberfläche auf.
This work is devoted to the study of model systems for the interaction of atoms, molecules, and their ions with solid surfaces. The thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, He atoms and ions with keV energies are scattered under grazing angles of incidence from Al(111), Al(100), and Al(110). Fractions of surviving ions and shifts of angular distributions for incident atoms and ions, are in good agreement with theoretically calculated Auger neutralization rates and He 1s ground-state energy shifts. A detailed microscopic understanding for a model system of ion-surface interactions is concluded. The studies are extended to noble gas atoms and surfaces with a more complex electronic structure as well as the Auger ionization process. In the second set of experiments, the formation of doubly excited states of He atoms during collisions of He2+ ions with Ni(110) and Fe(110) is studied via autoionization spectra. The electron spectra show a pronounced dependence on the coverage of the target surface with adsorbates. Thermal desorption and dissolution of surface contaminations into the bulk at elevated temperatures provide an alternative interpretation of recent work where the local electron spin polarization of Ni and Fe surfaces was deduced from autoionization spectra. In the third part, angular distributions, fragmentation, and charge fractions are studied for grazing scattering of C60 fullerene ions from Al(100), Be(0001), and LiF(100). A strong perturbation of the elastic properties of the fullerene by a nearby metal surface is demonstrated. Shifts of angular distributions for incident singly and doubly charged ions for the metal surfaces provide the first information on distances of electron transfer for positively charged fullerenes in front of metal surfaces. For the LiF(100) surface, pronounced internal excitations due to interactions with the periodic electric field at the surface are observed.

In this work, 22-pole ion trap machines have been applied to investigate protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n (n=4..10) and ionic hydrocarbons CHn+ (n=2..5) at low temperatures. Protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n play an important role in atmospheric chemistry and in interstellar space. The Taipei 22-pole ion trap machine has been applied to kinetic and spectroscopic investigations of these clusters produced from a supersonic expansion in a corona discharge source. Using low-pressure He buffer gas for collisional thermalization, refrigeration of the ion trap by liquid nitrogen allows a good control of the cluster temperature over the range 80K-350K. This method provides an accurate means of determining the dissociation energies of the cluster ions by measuring their dissociation rates as a function of temperature and calculating their internal energies from vibrational frequencies provided by density functional theory. Results of the thermochemical measurements at well-defined cluster temperatures have been given for H+(H2O)n, n=4..10. The feasibility of using the ion trap to acquire temperature-dependent infrared spectra is presented. The deuteration and abstraction reactions of small ionic hydrocarbons CHn+ (n=2..5) with H2, HD and D2 and the subsequent association processes have been explored at temperatures down to 15K in the Chemnitz 22-pole apparatus. The reactions of the investigated ionic species and their isotopic variants are important for understanding ion-molecule processes in the interstellar medium. One of the starting points of the research program was the question whether protonated methane, CH5+, is subject to H-D-exchange in collisions with HD at low temperatures. It turns out that the rate coefficient for this deuteration process is very small, whereas CH3+ deuterates with HD by three subsequent fast exchange reactions to CD3+ at a temperature of 15K. The latter process is very efficient and happens close to the collision limit. The methane cation, CH4+, on the other hand, shows also some interesting features in collisions with H2, HD and D2. It exhibits an inverse temperature dependence with the rate coefficient increasing at least one order of magnitude going from 300K to 15K. Furthermore, reacting with HD at the temperature of 15K, the reaction channel leading to CH5+ is preferred over the D-atom abstraction channel (isotope effect)
Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden zwei Apparaturen mit 22-Pol-Ionenfallen benutzt, um protonierte Wassercluster H+(H2O)n (n=4..10) und kleine ionische Kohlenwasserstoffe CHn+ (n=2..5) bei tiefen Temperaturen zu untersuchen. Die in einer Koronaentladungsquelle erzeugten Cluster H+(H2O)n wurden kinetisch und spektroskopisch untersucht. Dazu wurden sie in einem 22-Pol-Speicher mithilfe eines He-Puffergases auf einer Temperatur zwischen 80K und 350K thermalisiert. Die Bestimmung der Bindungsenergien fuer Cluster der Groesse n=4..10 wird ermoeglicht durch die Messung der temperaturabhaengigen Dissoziationsraten und durch die Ermittlung der inneren Energien mittels berechneter Schwingungsfrequenzen. Temperaturabhaengige IR-Spektren im Bereich der freien OH-Streckschwingung wurden aufgenommen. Die Austausch- und Abstreifreaktionen von ionischen Kohlenwasserstoffen CHn+ (n=2..5) mit H2, HD und D2 und die darauffolgenden Assoziationsprozesse wurden im Temperaturbereich 15K bis 300K untersucht. Es stellt sich z.B. heraus, dass der H-D-Austauschprozess zwischen CH5+ und HD bei 15K sehr langsam ist, wogegen CH3+ mit jeder Kollision einen Austausch ausfuehrt. In der Abstreifreaktion von CH4+ mit Wasserstoffmolekuelen beobachtet man eine inverse Temperaturabhaengigkeit. Dies wird vorlaeufig mit einer laengeren Komplexlebensdauer bei tiefen Temperaturen erklaert

Precise control over internal states of atomic ions in ion traps has been possible for many years enabling high precision spectroscopy of atomic transitions. Trapped ions are suitable candidates for quantum information processing due to their longstorage times, low decoherence rates and high readout efficiency. Recent advances in micro-machining fibre optic mirrors and integrated fibre optic-ion trap systems for cavity QED allows one to realise strong coupling between an ion and a cavity mode by reducing the mode volume. For strong ion-cavity coupling, deterministic transfer of quantum states between ions and photons is possible. We have designed and constructed a miniaturised linear Paul trap with an integrated optical cavity, intended for coupling multiple ions to the cavity mode. The RF-electrode separation is 50μm, while the endcap separation is 350μm. The endcap electrodes are narrow tubes of inner diameter 300μm allowing optical fibers through the tubes to form the cavity. The trap depth we calculate to be 650meV for a 10V applied potential at 20MHz. The 4P1⁄2→ 3D3⁄2 transition of the atomic ion 40Ca+ with Γ = 24π × 22MHz can be coupled to an optical fibre Fabry-Perot cavity with length of 380µm, finesse of 33,000 and cavity linewidth k = 2π ×11MHz. The ion-cavity coherent coupling g = 2π × 19:5MHz of this system will put it in single-ion strong coupling regime with cooperativity, C=1.5.
