Abstract:
Objective: To determine the effect of two adhesive systems and a glass ionomer coating resin on fluoride release and concurrent pH changes over a period of 168 days. Material and methods: Four restorative materials were investigated: a giomer Beautiful II, an “alkasite” material Cention, a conventional composite Filtek Z250, and a glass ionomer cement Fuji IX Extra. Light-cured composite specimens were coated using G-aenial Bond and Clearfil Universal Bond Quick. Glass ionomer specimens were coated using GC Fuji Coat LC. Uncoated specimens were used as references. Quantitative fluoride release and pH changes were measured after 1 h, 24 h, 2 days, 7 days, 28 days, 84 days, and 168 days. Results: The cumulative fluoride release after 168 days increased for uncoated specimens in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention < Fuji IX Extra. A comparatively lower fluoride release was measured for the composites coated with Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, with cumulative values after 168 days increasing in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention. The composites coated with G-aenial Bond showed lower fluoride release compared to the uncoated specimens, with cumulative values increasing in the following order: Filtek Z250 < Beautifil II < Cention. The composites coated with G-aenial Bond showed pH values in the acidic range (4.4- 5.7) after 1 h and 24 h. Conclusion: Fluoride release varied among the investigated restorative materials and depended on the use of dental adhesives and coatings. The pH of all materials, coating types and time points varied.

Abstract:
Ione manzanita (Arctostaphylos myrtifolia) is a rare, endemic, evergreen shrub restricted to Ione formation soils (infertile, acidic, sedimentary oxisols) in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The widely distributed A. viscida (whiteleaf manzanita) intermixes with A. myrtifolia at the margins of Ione formation soils. In 2002, we observed extensive mortality within two mixed stands of A. myrtifolia and A. viscida near Ione, CA. At one site, nearly all plants of both species in a 0.25-ha area had died recently. At a second site, most of the A. myrtifolia and A. viscida plants on several hectares died at least 5 years earlier. Dying plants of both species exhibited wilting and desiccation of the foliage; dark brown discoloration and necrosis of the root crown, taproot, and some large roots; and loss of fine roots. Plants of all age classes were affected. We consistently isolated a Phytophthora sp. from symptomatic plants of both species using PARP (1) and acidified potato dextrose agar. We recovered the same Phytophthora sp. from soil collected under dead plants using green pears to bait flooded soil samples. The pathogen was not recovered from soil collected under healthy plants 50 m from the nearest dead plant. Based on the morphology of the hyphae, chlamydospores, sporangia, and the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA, we identified the pathogen as P. cinnamomi Rands (GenBank Accession No. AY267370; ATCC No. MYA-2989). To test pathogenicity, we poured zoospore suspensions (4 × 104 zoospores per pot) on the soil of eight pots with rooted A. myrtifolia cuttings and four pots with rooted A. viscida cuttings (1 14-month-old plant per pot). The soil in inoculated and uninoculated control pots (eight A. myrtifolia and two A. viscida) was flooded for 20 to 23 h. All inoculated A. myrtifolia developed severe root and crown rot, and seven of eight died within 17 days. All inoculated A. viscida developed severe root rot, and three of four developed 5- to 10-cm long basal cankers. After 17 days, we isolated P. cinnamomi from inoculated A. myrtifolia (eight of eight) and A. viscida (two of four) but not from controls, which remained healthy. We tested pathogenicity in native soil by transplanting rooted cuttings (eight A myrtifolia and six A. viscida) into pots of naturally infested soil from one of the disease centers. Controls (four and three plants, respectively) were planted in soil collected from under healthy plants. Pots were flooded for 12 to 13 h for 11 days (A. myrtifolia) or 6 weeks (A. viscida) after transplanting. All plants grown in naturally infested soil developed root and crown rot, and all A. myrtifolia and one A. viscida died within 5 weeks of transplanting. Plants grown in field soil collected near healthy plants remained asymptomatic. We isolated P. cinnamomi from all eight A. myrtifolia and three A. viscida plants grown in infested soil but not from the controls. To our knowledge, this is the first report of root and crown rot caused by P. cinnamomi on A. myrtifolia and A. viscida. P cinnamomi was first isolated in the state in 1942 (2), but it has not previously been reported to caused significant mortality in natural stands of California native species. Vzdražljive (ekscitabilne) celice se imenujejo celice, ki so sposobne proizvajati akcijske potenciale. Akcijski potenciali nastajajojo v nevronih in mišicah v obliki signalov. Signalni mehanizem povzroča možgansko aktivnost oziroma krčenje mišic. Lipidni plasti celične membrane se obnašata kot kondenzator, spremenljive prevodnosti membrane za posamezne ione pa so posledica ionskih kanalov, ki se lahko odpirajo ali zapirajo in s tem bolje ali slabše prevajajo. Na tej osnovi lahko celično membrano modeliramo kot električno vezje. V članku je predstavljena izpeljava enačb Hodgkin-Huxleyevega modela celične membrane s pomočjo osnovnih zakonov elektrotehnike in kinetike prvega reda. Dobljeni matematični model celične membrane je uporabljen za simulacijo akcijskega potenciala s simboličnim programskim orodjem Mathematica®.

Klorna voda nije, jednostavno, otopina klora u vodi, nego složena otopina koja sadrži elementarni klor, Cl2(aq), klorovodičnu (HCl) i hipoklorastu kiselinu (HOCl) uz trikloridne ione (Cl3−) i možebitno zaostalu kuhinjsku sol, NaCl. Sve te komponente stoje u međusobnoj kemijskoj ravnoteži. U radu je opisana kratka povijest kemije i tehnologije klora, prikazane su ravnotežne reakcije u njegovoj vodenoj otopini te primjena HOCl kao dezinfekcijskog sredstva uz navođenje njezinih kemijskih i fizioloških učinaka. U posljednje je vrijeme razrijeđena klorna voda (50 – 100 ppm) postala popularna kao dezinfekcijsko sredstvo (“elektrokemijski aktivirana voda”, ECA, i sl.). Iako se ECA jednostavno priprema, elektrolizom razrijeđene vodene otopine NaCl, veliku pozornost treba posvetiti njezinoj čistoći te režimu skladištenja kako bi ostala dugo vremena stabilna.

It is quite clear, however, that both belong to the so-called ‘abbreviated group’ figurines, which consist of driven oxen – ‘plough’ (PLATE 8a) – or single chariots, as identified by E.B. French and further defined by me in my work on the terracottas from the Sanctuary of Aphaia on Aigina. In an abbreviated group there is only one animal instead of two, with one human, sometimes two, standing at the rear of the animal, in or behind a small or almost non-existent box or balustrade. According to what animal head is at the front of the figurine, either horse or bovine, it is an abbreviated chariot or, much more commonly, a driven ox. In the fully preserved pieces the head of the driver always faces towards the animal head.

Abstract. After removal of the Selective Availability in 2000, the ionosphere became the dominant error source for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), especially for the high-accuracy (cm-mm) demanding applications like the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and Real Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning. The common practice of eliminating the ionospheric error, e.g. by the ionosphere free (IF) observable, which is a linear combination of observables on two frequencies such as GPS L1 and L2, accounts for about 99 % of the total ionospheric effect, known as the first order ionospheric effect (Ion1). The remaining 1 % residual range errors (RREs) in the IF observable are due to the higher – second and third, order ionospheric effects, Ion2 and Ion3, respectively. Both terms are related with the electron content along the signal path; moreover Ion2 term is associated with the influence of the geomagnetic field on the ionospheric refractive index and Ion3 with the ray bending effect of the ionosphere, which can cause significant deviation in the ray trajectory (due to strong electron density gradients in the ionosphere) such that the error contribution of Ion3 can exceed that of Ion2 (Kim and Tinin, 2007). The higher order error terms do not cancel out in the (first order) ionospherically corrected observable and as such, when not accounted for, they can degrade the accuracy of GNSS positioning, depending on the level of the solar activity and geomagnetic and ionospheric conditions (Hoque and Jakowski, 2007). Simulation results from early 1990s show that Ion2 and Ion3 would contribute to the ionospheric error budget by less than 1 % of the Ion1 term at GPS frequencies (Datta-Barua et al., 2008). Although the IF observable may provide sufficient accuracy for most GNSS applications, Ion2 and Ion3 need to be considered for higher accuracy demanding applications especially at times of higher solar activity. This paper investigates the higher order ionospheric effects (Ion2 and Ion3, however excluding the ray bending effects associated with Ion3) in the European region in the GNSS positioning considering the precise point positioning (PPP) method. For this purpose observations from four European stations were considered. These observations were taken in four time intervals corresponding to various geophysical conditions: the active and quiet periods of the solar cycle, 2001 and 2006, respectively, excluding the effects of disturbances in the geomagnetic field (i.e. geomagnetic storms), as well as the years of 2001 and 2003, this time including the impact of geomagnetic disturbances. The program RINEX_HO (Marques et al., 2011) was used to calculate the magnitudes of Ion2 and Ion3 on the range measurements as well as the total electron content (TEC) observed on each receiver-satellite link. The program also corrects the GPS observation files for Ion2 and Ion3; thereafter it is possible to perform PPP with both the original and corrected GPS observation files to analyze the impact of the higher order ionospheric error terms excluding the ray bending effect which may become significant especially at low elevation angles (Ioannides and Strangeways, 2002) on the estimated station coordinates.

In Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound, the Oceanides – Asia, Panthea, and Ione – direct the evolution of poetic consciousness through their lyricism which expresses human intuition and what Shelley calls in his ‘Defence of Poetry’ (1820) ‘the before unapprehended relations of things’. Their presence in Shelley’s lyrical drama leads from both abstract transcendental and literalist perspectives on reality in Act I to a more flexible and creative inner perspective in Act 2. The internal spaces evoked by the language of the Oceanides, spaces of reverie and dream, are the locus of metaphor – the endowment of absence with meaning and the identification of disparate objects with one another. As in dream, the dissolution of metaphor is integral to its dynamic processes. Asia, her dreams, and the unconscious liberate Prometheus as consciousness from the fixed rigidity which kills both metaphor and purpose; dream unfurls a ‘nobler’ myth to replace the stagnant one. Although Prometheus Unbound cannot narrate its own apotheosis, it weaves the process or spell of metaphor-making: ‘These are the spells by which to reassume / An empire o’er the disentangled Doom’ (IV, 568–69). After the words have been spoken, meaning must be continually sought in the non-verbal reverberating echoes of the unconscious.

Molybdate-phosphate conversion coating was prepared by adding addition agent towards molybdenum-phosphorus compounds based bath on comercial hot dip galvanized steel. The anti-corrosion performance of the coating was evaluated by electrochemical technique in 3.5%NaCl. It is found that the anodic branch of polarization curves presented in passivation character. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that the radius of the capacity impedance for molybdate-phosphate film increased distinctly with pH decrease, which validate the excellent anti-corrosion performance of the film. The surface morphologies were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the results show that the surface of hot dip galvanized steel is covered by a spiculate and floccule shape conversion coating. The chemical composition of the surface coating was investigated by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), which illustrate that the conversion coating is composed of zinc,oxygen, phosphor and molybdenum.

One week before the 1908 U.S. presidential election, the women of the Hesperian Literary Society at the State University of Iowa (SUI, now the University of Iowa) presented “a unique program” in the form of a mock political rally. Imagining that they lived in a town where women had “been honored by the legislature with the ballot,” the “Hep” members divided into clubs that supported various candidates and causes. Several women formed the Utopian Club, which promoted William Jennings Bryan's presidential candidacy, while the members who comprised the Women's Culture Club supported William Howard Taft. Heps who pretended to belong to the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) argued for prohibition. Portraying the era's political dynamism, other Heps represented anarchists, socialists, and independents. A woman from each group spoke in support of her cause in front of a crowd that included “a lot of” college men. SUI senior and Hep member Ione Mulnix described the rally in a letter to her parents: “[T]he speeches were of course very ridiculous. The reasons why each was the best were very feminine and would hardly convince aman.” She explained that the Utopian Club representative “argued for Bryan because he was the best looking.” The Heps ended their program by setting loose a toy mouse, causing the actors to scream and scatter. Finding the fictitious rally “awfully funny,” Mulnix noted that the Hep women “acted their parts to perfection” and that the college men “seemed to appreciate it immensely.”
