Abstract:
The Mott - Hubbard metal - insulator transition in the half-filled mass imbalanced ionic Hubbard model is investigated using the two-site dynamical mean field theory. We find that for a fixed mass imbalanced parameter r the critical interaction Uc increases when the ionic energy \(\Delta\) is increased. In the other hand, for a fixed \(\Delta\), \(U_c\) decreases with increasing the mass imbalance. We also show the existence of BI phase in the system for the case \(\Delta \ne 0\), \(U=0\) and calculate the staggered charge density \(n_B − n_A\) as a function of the interaction for different va

Designing inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) with both excellent electrochemical stability and high ionic conductivity is an important research direction for all-solid-state batteries. However, due to the electronic conduction of hierarchical decomposition products, there is an imbalance between the ionic transport and electrochemical stability window of the ISEs. Here, we propose a computational approach that incorporates bond valence-Ewald energy analysis and dynamically determined decomposition pathway to portray the competing relationship between ionic transport and stable electrochemical

Plants exposure to salt can check their growth by reduction in water and nutrient uptake, osmotic imbalance and cytotoxicity incited by sodium and chloride ions. Present study deals with the impact of salt on germination, growth and physiological components of fenugreek and its alleviation by the application of calcium silicate. The red blood cells (RBCs) carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissues, and for this, they must be able to deform. Accordingly, an impairment of RBC deformability is the cause of RBCs trapping and removal by the spleen and haemolysis. The most common causes for the decline in red cell deformability are the RBC membrane defects (abnormal shape or ionic transport imbalance), haemoglobinopathies (increased rigidity), or enzyme deficiencies (decreased anti-oxidant defences or ATP content). Abstract Seizures are a consequence of an imbalance between excitation and inhibition. Of course, most of the time the brain does not generate seizure activity, even in severely epileptic patients. So there must be a way for the balance of excitation and inhibition to shift to engender seizure activity. Here two types of shifts are considered. The first is a temporal shift in the efficacy of inhibition. The neurotransmitter GABA, released from interneurons and acting on postsynaptic GABAA receptors, is the principal mechanism of synaptic inhibition in the brain. The GABAA receptor is unique in

Abstract According to a classical concept in epilepsy research, seizures are triggered by an “imbalance” between excitatory (glutamatergic) and inhibitory (GABAergic) synaptic transmission. Recent work has shown, however, that not only the efficacy but also the qualitative mode of action of GABAergic signaling is controlled by ionic plasticity, which is mediated by activity-dependent changes in the driving force of currents across GABAA receptors (GABAARs). We will briefly describe the basics of neuronal Cl− and pH/HCO3− regulation, and the main functions of neuronal carbonic anhydrases and th

Abstract Shielding of cathodic protection (CP) by disbonded coatings is considered a “worst case scenario” for external corrosion in the pipeline industry. It has been hypothesized that if coatings were partially permeable to CP, the imbalance between cathodic and anodic reactions would induce a high pH environment under disbonded coatings and that would impede corrosion. However, direct experimental evidence of this process has been limited. Moreover, this line of reasoning is often inversed incorrectly assuming that the only reason for the presence of a high pH environment under disbonded co

The hydrophilic clays are used in making drilling mud as they provide extensive viscosity and gel strength, and other rheological properties important for optimum drilling mud performance. However, the segregation of the suspended particles of the once optimum mud to create mud cake against the wellbore formation leads to phases imbalance in the mud system, degrading the physiochemical characteristics of the now worn-out mud after several
