Abstract:
Fortran provides a standardized mechanism for interoperating with C. Any entity involved must be such that equivalent declarations of it may be made in the two languages. This is enforced within the Fortran program by requiring all such entities to be interoperable. We explain in turn what this requires for types, variables, and procedures. They are all requirements on the syntax so that the compiler knows at compile time whether an entity is interoperable. We examine interoperability for global data and then discuss some examples.

This chapter examines reverse engineering and the decompilation of computer programs, both of which are highly regulated under the current copyright regime. It begins with a practical overview of reverse engineering and decompilation of software, focusing on types of reverse engineering prevalent in the software industry, the various stages of reverse engineering, and the motivation and methods for reverse engineering. It then looks at the reasons for and benefits of decompilation, which is a category of reverse engineering, and examines software interoperability. At this stage the chapter con

This chapter keeps us in the domain of legal theory and legal philosophy and discusses how the vagueness of the law explains why different people interpret the law differently. It also places emphasis on the importance of the law’s interpretation and provides a framework that ought to guide our interpretation of law so as to maximise our prospect of reaching jurisdictional interoperability. That framework consists of three main guiding principles: (1) ‘fairness’, (2) ‘consequence focus’, and (3) ‘harmonisationalism’. Further, it discusses some common, and particularly unhelpful, approaches to

This can be achieved by keeping copper-based wholesale charges stable in real terms until the end of the migration process. Mobile spectrum should be granted by means of an auction. . This chapter discusses the important role the Internet intermediaries play for the proper functioning of the Internet of today. It elaborates on this topic and discusses the possibility of a doctrine of selective legal compliance to protect the Internet intermediaries. The chapter demonstrates that, the law already takes step towards protecting Internet intermediaries due to their unique role and argues that expanding this protection into the mentioned doctrine may be a surprisingly natural development; and a development that would be most helpful for establishing jurisdictional interoperabili

Using the same criteria as that employed to assess imperial interoperability in Chapter 3, this chapter examines how Britain, India, and the dominions raised their armies and worked together during the Second World War. It finds that, in spite of some terrible defeats, such as Singapore and Dieppe, and some difficult personal relationships between generals, the armies of the empire worked quite well together. This owed much to decades of common training, organization, and staff procedures. The ability of the empire’s armies to work together contrasts sharply with the inability of any of them t

The expansion and deepening of the UK–French defence partnership that came with the signing of the Lancaster House Treaties of November 2010 is of particular importance for European armed forces. The UK–French agreement concerns Europe’s two main defence players and covers both nuclear and conventional matters. This chapter first analyses the incentives that led to the cooperation treaties being signed in November 2010. It argues that it has four drivers: converging defence policies, economic necessity, the waning of traditional bilateral partnerships, and frustration with regional defence coo

The introduction sets the scope in terms of perspective and time span. This is an imperial history—from the time that imperial authorities decided to address seriously the military problems of the empire (1902) until the end of the last great imperial war effort (1945). These wide parameters are critical. Only by stepping outside the bounds of national histories can one appreciate the imperial ‘big picture’. After all, the interoperability of the imperial armies would not have been necessary were it not for imperial military problems. And only by taking a longer view can one see the full arc o

Centered on an examination of the United States’ “Joint Targeting Cycle,” a construct broadly shared by many other states and organizations, such as NATO, it explains how international humanitarian law concepts are given practical effect during armed conflict. The analysis then proceeds to explore the nuances of targeting in different operational domains: air, land, sea, and cyber. While achievin

This topic is now complemented by an even more significant body of regulation, dealing with a wide range of issues such as market access, consumer and worker protection, safety, security, interoper

The only way to handle data responsibly, says Melanie Feinberg in this incisive work, is to take into account its human character.
