Abstract:
Landers and Behrend (2015) present yet another attempt to limit reviewer and editor reliance on surface characteristics when evaluating the generalizability of study results (see also Campbell, 1986; Dipboye & Flanagan, 1979; Greenberg, 1987; Highhouse, 2009; Highhouse & Gillespie, 2009). Most of the earlier treatments of sample generalizability, however, have focused on the use of college students in (mostly) laboratory studies. Many industrial–organizational (I-O) scholars have experienced the hostility with which studies using students as participants receives. For instance, Jen Gillespie and I observed, “Reviewers and editors commonly assert that students should not be used to study workplace phenomena as though such a declaration requires no further explanation” (Highhouse & Gillespie, 2009, p. 247). The difference this time, however, is that Landers and Behrend (2015) are reacting to dismissals of research using Mechanical Turk (MTurk) workers to make inferences about behavior in organizations. Landers and Behrend (2015) make the important point that any research population is likely to be atypical on some dimensions and that all samples are samples of convenience (see also Oakes, 1972). We agree. Furthermore, we make two observations about MTurk: (a) We believe that it should be met with less resistance than student samples have historically faced, and (b) we suggest that it provides a unique opportunity to bring back randomized experimentation in I-O psychology.

Abstract:
When developing new heavy vehicles today demands for increasingly more advanced features are asked for. A lot of the new functionality is about machines performing tasks automatically to assist the driver when driving. This leads to new risks, and as a result a new functional safety standard has been created. ISO 26262 is a functional safety standard that today exists for ordinary cars, but has not yet became a standard for trucks. According to the ISO 26262-standard requirements can be mapped to other requirements as well as to the system architecture. At present there are several tools on the market that supports the user when writing specifications. However, our research of the tools has led us to conclude that all lacked something. For example neither of the tools had good support for mapping between requirements and system architecture. In this thesis work, functionality for a tool which is supposed to support the user in various ways when writing requirements specifications was to be examined. Based on contract theory and the concept of ports that links requirements together with system architecture, an application can ensure that there is a formal link between the two. To test the suggested functionality a prototype is being developed. The result has been a successful as we based on contract theory could validate that using ports to create links between different requirements as well as between requirements and system architecture works through the implementation of the tool. Validation that the selected storage format JSON also provides the implementer with enough support to save the requirements in a way so that the data files can be decomposed and stored in the Neo4J database.

Ritchie, Brian. "The design and implementation of an interactive proof editor." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6607.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the design and implementation of the IPE, an interactive proof editor for first-order intuitionistic predicate calculus, developed at the University of Edinburgh during 1983-1986, by the author together with John Cartmell and Tatsuya Hagino. The IPE uses an attribute grammar to maintain the state of its proof tree as a context-sensitive structure. The interface allows free movement through the proof structure, and encourages a "proof-byexperimentation" approach, since no proof step is irrevocable. We describe how the IPE's proof rules can be derived from natural deduction rules for first-order intuitionistic logic, how these proof rules are encoded as an attribute grammar, and how the interface is constructed on top of the grammar. Further facilities for the manipulation of the IPE's proof structures are presented, including a notion of IPE-tactic for their automatic construction. We also describe an extension of the IPE to enable the construction and use of simply-structured collections of axioms and results, the main provision here being an interactive "theory browser" which looks for facts which match a selected problem.

Abstract:
Speech work, as it relates to actor training, has undergone many important changes since its formal introduction to the field over a century ago by Edith Skinner. Unfortunately, there are many who hold on to antiquated, misinformed and often harmful approaches to this kind of training. This thesis questioned the traditional models of speech pedagogy by creating a narrative for its development, questioning its efficacy, and exploring the alternatives that have developed over the years. I looked at the texts and approaches of Edith Skinner, Patricia Fletcher, Louis Coliaini, and Dudley Knight/Phil Thompson. I acknowledge that each practitioner has made a substantial contribution to the field. In this thesis I question what place each has in the future of speech pedagogy in America. I gathered opinions from both critics and proponents of each work in the hopes of creating a more cohesive understanding of how speech pedagogy should be handled in the future according to those who will be teaching it. This thesis includes considerable usage of phonetic symbols found on the International Phonetic Alphabet establish by the International Phonetic Association.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Contemporary Intellectual Property: Law and Policy, fifth edition, offers a unique perspective on intellectual property (IP) law, unrivalled amongst IP textbooks. An accessible introduction to IP law, it provides not only a comprehensive account of the substantive law, but also discusses the overarching policies directing the legal decision-making, as well as areas for further debate. Intellectual property law is an increasingly global subject, and the book introduces the relevant European and international dimensions to present a realistic view of the law as it actually operates. It explores IP law as an organic discipline, evaluating the success with which it has responded to new challenges. Images and diagrams, with analysis of key cases and key extracts, are all incorporated alongside the author commentary to clearly illustrate the core principles in IP law. Exercise, questions, and discussion points are provided to help the reader to engage with the material, and additional material is provided in the Online Resources. Beyond providing an up-to-date account of IP law, the text examines the complex policies that inform modern IP law at the domestic (including Scottish), European, and international levels, giving the reader a true insight into the discipline and the shape of things to come. The focus is on contemporary challenges to IP law and policy, and the reader is encouraged to engage critically with the text and the subject matter. The book has been carefully developed to ensure that the complexities of the subject are addressed in a clear and approachable way.

Abstract:
The early focus of the Ethnologue was on L1 use and is reflected in the maps that are included with each new edition. Typically, the maps show locations and boundaries corresponding to the distribution of L1 speakers. The location of widespread, second, or additional languages (such as national languages, lingua francas, and languages of wider communication) is only occasionally represented by maps, using a variety of methods. Major factors affecting this effort are related to language identification (ISO 639-3), categorization (status: sociohistorical, official recognition, vitality), and analytical and research methods (lexical similarity, intelligibility, bilingual proficiency). This chapter examines the Ethnologue’s approach in all of these areas. Currently, significant effort is being made to structure the Ethnologue database to provide expanded data on the ecological setting of each language. This should significantly increase capacity for mapping the use of widespread L2s. A sample map showing the use of Lingala/Bangala is provided.

Abstract:
Nuestra formación en el estudio de la forma y función ha tenido y tiene gran parte de prueba y error. Hay mucho material para estudiar, muchas problemáticas que abordar y mucho de marco conceptual y metodología que aprender. O desarrollar… En este proceso ha sido y es crucial el aporte de los editores y revisores de nuestros trabajos. Los manuscritos enviados a las revistas retornaron y retornan con correcciones y sugerencias o perspectivas que no habíamos considerado y que nos enriquecen intelectualmente. La interacción dentro del grupo y con otros interesados en el tema nos permite incrementar las temáticas a tratar y metodologías a utilizar y generar una masa crítica para la exploración de nuevas metodologías y la discusión del marco conceptual. Así, creemos que estamos aportando al desarrollo y la innovación de la dimensión funcional de las expectativas de Reig y Pascual. Con este libro esperamos ayudar a tomar un atajo a quienes buscan iniciarse en el estudio de la forma y función de vertebrados fósiles. De ninguna manera pensamos que es un texto definitivo; solo es una apretada síntesis de los trayectos que recorrimos, dónde nos encontramos y dónde creemos que podemos llegar. Nuestro relato transita por los caminos más firmes que conocemos. Por ello, nos referimos mayormente a nuestros propios trabajos, resumiendo las discusiones metodológicas, conceptuales y epistemológicas que se nos han ido planteando y señalando alternativas. Nuestra perspectiva es que, desde la singularidad de las faunas extintas de vertebrados de América del Sur, los estudios funcionales ayudarán a descifrar procesos a nivel de organismos que aportarán a enfoques supraorganísmicos (incluyendo el ambiental) en los análisis evolutivos. &lt;i&gt;(del prólogo de los autores)&lt;/i&gt;

Abstract:
Today, in the era of modern Intelligent Production Environments (IPE) and Industry 4.0, the manufacturing of a product takes place in various partial steps and these mostly in different locations, potentially distributed all over the world. The producing companies must assert in the global market and always find new ways to cut costs by saving tax, changing to the best providers, and by using the most efficient and fastest production processes. Furthermore, they must be inevitably based on a cloud-based repository and distributed architectures to make data and information accessible everywhere as well as development processes and knowledge available for a worldwide cooperation. A so called Collaborative Adaptive (Production) Process Planning (CAPP) can be supported by semantic approaches for knowledge representation and management as well as knowledge sharing, access, and re-use in a flexible and efficient way. In this way, to support CAPP scenarios, semantic representations of such knowledge integrated into a machine-readable process formalization is a key enabling factor for sharing in cloud-based knowledge repositories. This is especially required for, e.g., Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). When SMEs work together on a production planning for a joint product, they exchange component production and manufacturing change information between different planning subsystems. These exchanges are mostly based on the already well-established Standard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP), not least to obtain a computer-interpretable representation. Moreover, so-called Function Block (FB) Domain Models could support these planning process. FBs serve as a high-level planning-process knowledge-resource template and to the representation of knowledge. Furthermore, methodologies are required, which based on process-oriented semantic knowledge-representation, such as Process-oriented Knowledge-based Innovation Management (German: Wissens-basiertes Prozess-orientiertes Innovations Management, WPIM). WPIM is already a web- and cloud-based tool suites and can represent such planning processes and their knowledge resources and can therefore be used to support the integration and the management of distributed CAPP knowledge in Manufacturing Change Management (MCM), as well as its access and re-use. That is also valid for Assembly-, Logistics- and Layout Planning (ALLP). On the one hand, a collaborative planning in a machine-readable and integrated representation will be possible as well as an optimization for mass production. On the other hand, within a cloud-based semantic knowledge repository, that knowledge can be shared with all partners and contributors. To combine all these functionalities, in 2016 we have already introduced a method, called Knowledge-based Production Planning (KPP). We outlined the theoretical advantages of integrating CAPP with Collaborative Manufacturing Change Management (CMCM) in the last year at MSEC16. In this Paper, we will demonstrate our first implementations of the KPP application with an integrated visual direct manipulative process editor as well as a first prototype of our mediator architecture with a semantic integration including a query library based on the KPP ontology.

Abstract:
Cyber security in the maritime industry became crucial due to both academic researches and incidents. There are academic studies that show vulnerabilities in various navigation equipments such as GPS, ECDIS, AIS and ARPA-Radar. Additionally, there are different cyber incidents around the world. Developments in technology, autonomous ship projects, academic studies and cyber incidents in the sector put in action IMO. As per ISM Code, all shipping companies are mandatory to add “Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Risk Management” manual to their SMS manuals until 1st January 2021. Both OCIMF and CDI failed to be indifferent to developments that are important for tanker operators as well as IMO. While OCIMF added cybersecurity-related questions to vetting programs called TMSA 3 and VIQ 7, CDI also added cybersecurity-related items in SIR 9.8.1 edition. On the other hand, RightShip provides significant vetting service for dry cargo ships. “Inspection and Assessment Report” is issued by RigthShip for dry cargo ships. Questions related with cybersecurity was added with Revision No: 11 dated on 11th May 2017 in “Inspection and Assessment Report”. In this study, cyber security related questions which are asked during TMSA, SIRE and CDI vettings which play a critical role for commercial life of tanker firms, were analyzed. Moreover, questions and efficiency of RightShip that offers vetting service for dry cargo ships, were assessed to maritime cyber security. Also, cybersecurity-related questions in vetting questionnaires were interpreted by the author. These comments rely on benchmarking meetings among tanker operators where the author personally attended, and interview with key persons. Noted observations during vettings may negatively impact both commercial life and reputation of the tanker operators. That’s why the firm names and interviewee names were kept confidential. In this study, it was seen that although IMO demanded verification of cyber security-related implementations for the ship operators until 1st January 2021, this process started earlier for tanker operators.

Abstract:
PIPESAFE is a hazard and risk assessment package for gas transmission pipelines, developed by Advantica for an international group of gas pipeline companies. Although the likelihood of failure of transmission pipelines is very low, the possibility of failure and a subsequent fire cannot be discounted. PIPESAFE provides the means to take consistent and informed decisions on risk issues, including infringements to pipeline design codes, uprating of pipelines (i.e. to operate at higher pressures), pipeline routeing and land use planning. The development of PIPESAFE was first reported at IPC ’98. This paper describes recent enhancements to the package, validation of the predictions against full-scale experiments and incidents, and modifications to the risk calculation methods. The paper also describes risk criteria developed in the UK and The Netherlands, the background to their development, and the use of PIPESAFE to generate risk criteria included in the latest edition of the UK pipeline code IGE/TD/1.

Abstract:
The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction. The implications of empirical findings are discussed together with guidelines for future research. Keywords: Interaction Design, Self service, Self-checkout, User evaluation, UsabilityReferencias ABRAHÃO, J., et al (2013).
