Abstract:
Poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) (PiPrOx) is readily prone to crystallization both in solid and from solutions. This feature is detrimental for certain applications. Here, we examine whether the presence of unsubstituted ethyleneimine (EI) units, a gradient distributed within a polymer chain composed of 2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline (iPrOx) and 2-methyl-2-oxazoline (MOx) units, decreases the ability to crystallize the copolymer and affects thermal properties compared to the homopolymer of iPrOx. We assumed that the separation of stiff iPrOx units by the more flexible EI will affect the spatial arrangements of the ordered chains, slightly plasticize and, as a result, decrease their ability to crystallize. The selective hydrolysis of gradient iPrOx and 2-methyl-2-oxazoline (MOx) copolymers, carried out under mild conditions, led to iPrOx/MOx/EI copolymers. To the best of our knowledge, the selective hydrolysis of these copolymers has never been carried out before. Their thermal properties and crystallization abilities, both in a solid state and from an aqueous solution, were analyzed. Based on the analysis of polymer charge and cytotoxicity studies, the potential use of the copolymers obtained was indicated in some biological systems.

Abstract:
This study involved a usability test of the iProvèn BPM-337BT, a popular wrist-based blood pressure monitor. With the increased variety of off-the-shelf blood pressure monitors, potential risks associated with various designs as well as usability and interaction issues remain unknown for many devices. The goal of this usability study was to discover any potential use errors and issues associated with user interfaces of the FDA-approved iProvèn BPM. Results suggest that the device had dense and unclear instructions, imperceptible icons on the display, and some inconsistencies in the application which could be redesigned to prevent use errors and increase user satisfaction.

Abstract:

Abstract:
To objectively evaluate in-patient rehabilitation programmes in China, we developed a new rating scale: the Inpatient Psychiatric Rehabilitation Outcome Scale (IPROS). The scale has five subscales: performance in occupational therapy, daily activities, socialisation, personal hygiene, and level of interest in external events. Evaluators (physicians or nurses) observe patients for one week before coding items on a five-point scale. Comparison of four independent evaluators' results for 32 schizophrenic patients assessed on two separate occasions indicated that the inter-rater and test-retest reliability for the overall IPROS score and for the five subscale scores was excellent (all ICC values ≥0.973). Validity was evaluated by comparing IPROS results with those of five other independently assessed clinical measures for 101 chronic schizophrenic patients before and after a six-month rehabilitation programme; concurrent validity and longitudinal validity were satisfactory (correlation coefficients 0.37–0.81, all P values <0.01).

Abstract:
Intra-amnial administration of isoprenaline (IPRO) to chick embryos induces a number of myocardial lesions. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether similar changes may also be induced after injection of spontaneously oxidized isoprenaline and commercially obtained adrenochrome. Cardiotoxicity of these substances has been demonstrated in adult animals. IPRO, oxidized IPRO, or adrenochrome were administered intra-amnially to 10-day-old chick embryos at doses of 0.1, 1.0, 10.0, and 100.0 mg∙kg−1. Parallel experimental groups received propranolol at a dose of 1 mg∙kg−1, 15 s before injection of IPRO or oxidized IPRO. The cAMP level in the heart was determined by radioimmunoassay 2 and 30 min after administration of IPRO, oxidized IPRO, or adrenochrome at a single dose of 10.0 mg∙kg−1. It has been found that in embryos the effect of IPRO and oxidized IPRO is dose dependent. The rise in mortality and development of cardiomegaly together with increased hydration and disturbances of the development of coronary vascularization were highly significant starting from the dose of 10 mg∙kg−1. Furthermore, both drugs significantly increased cAMP levels in the embryonic heart. On the other hand, the administration of adrenochrome was without any effect. The changes induced by IPRO were prevented by the administration of the beta-blocking agent propranolol; the lesions induced by spontaneously oxidized IPRO were, however, prevented only partially.

Abstract:
The reactions of benzene or toluene solutions of RuII(TMP), where TMP is the dianion of 5,10,15,20–tetramesitylporphyrin, with some acetylenes and alkenes are reported. Acetylene yields the isolable [Ru(TMP)]2(μ-C2H2) species; while with phenylacetylene or diphenylacetylene, 1:1 π-complexes are formed. The π-complexes Ru(TMP)(C2H4) and Ru(TMP)-(C2H4)(iPrOH)•iPrOH are isolated from reactions with ethylene, and a similar cyclohexene species is characterized insitu. The findings are relevant to O2-epoxidation of alkenes catalyzed by the trans-Ru(TMP)(O)2 complex. Keywords: ruthenium, porphyrin (tetramesityl), alkene complexes, alkyne complexes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The template reaction of a warm methanolic solution of Ni(OAc)2?4H2O S-n-propylisothiosemicarbazide hydroiodide and acetylacetone yielded the needle- like, brown, diamagnetic complex [Ni(L-H)]I?MeOH, and in the presence of an excess of NH 4NCS, brown, prismatic crystals of the complex [Ni(L-H)]NCS (1), both compounds involving the monoanionic form of the ligand, acetylacetone bis(S-n-propylisothiosemicarbazone), L. Slow recrystallization fromMeOH, EtOH, iPrOH and Me2CO gave the corresponding monosolvent complexes [Ni(L-H)]I?solvent, of which only those involving EtOH and iPrOH were suitable for structural analysis. The crystallographic parameters of [Ni(L-H)]I?EtOH (2) and [Ni(L-H)]I?iPrOH (3) are very similar to each other, showing their structures are isomorphic. The crystal structures of the title compounds consist of the independent ions: NCS-, or I-, and the chemically identical cation [Ni(L-H)]+, where L-H is the monoanion resulting from deprotonation of the acetylacetone moiety, a tetradentate N4 ligand forming a square-planar coordination around a Ni(II) ion. It was found that the isothiosemicarbazide fragment of the ligand has an imido form. The complex cations of the compounds [Ni(L-H)]NCS and [Ni(L-H)]I?EtOH exhibit significant difference only in the conformation of their propyl groups.

Abstract:
Soybean (Glycine max) is a crop of high economic power in the world, being used to produce vegetable oil, as well as a source of food for animals and humans. Recent research indicates that nutrient application in the seed stage contributes to the early and productive development of crops. Since silicon (Si), as a nutrient for plants, acts in the cellular structure and the formation and performance of plant architecture, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of silicon application via seeds on the initial growth of three soybean cultivars. The experimental design was a randomized block. The treatments were replicated three times and distributed in a 3×5 factorial scheme, composed by three soybean cultivars (C1 - FTR 1186 IPRO, C2 - FTR 1192 IPRO and C3 - FTR 3190 IPRO) and five silicon doses (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 g per 100 kg of seeds). The data were submitted to ANOVA by F-test and polynomial regression analysis for the silicon doses; the cultivars response was evaluated through the Tukey mean test. The treatment of soybean seeds with silicon did not positively influence the root dry mass of the FTR 1192 IPRO, nor the root length and root diameter of the FTR 1186 IPRO. The application of silicon did not influence the FTR 3190 IPRO.

Abstract:
The efficiency of waste from industrial processing has been increasingly studied in the control of phytonematoids, especially filter cake, coffee husks and sugar cane bagasse. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of organic residues through the use of filter cake to reduce the population density of Pratylenchus brachyurus (Tylenchida: Pratylenchidae). The first experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in the completely randomized design in the 2 × 4 factorial scheme (soybean genotypes vs. filter cake doses) with four replications using soybean genotypes AS 3810 IPRO and LG60163 IPRO and the second experiment was carried out under the same conditions, with maize AG 1051 with four doses of filter cake with 7 replications. In both experiments, the planting was carried out in an area located in the city of Goianésia, Goiás, Brazil. The results showed that the population density of Pratylenchus brachyurus in the maize crop to grow AG 1051 did not show statistically significant difference by applying the different doses of filter cake. In soybean genotypes AS 3810 IPRO and LG60163 IPRO were affected in ways contrary to phytonematoid infestation, in which AS 3810 IPRO showed a population increase according to the increase of the applied amounts of filter cake, whereas in the cultivar LG60163 IPRO there was a decrease for doses of 10 tonnes/ha-1 and 30 tonnes/ha-1, with an increase of only 20 tonnes/ha-1.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose The iPro Cube is a small portable point-of-care device designed to analyse salivary markers of stress in a user-friendly manner (e.g., fast, convenient). Our aim was to test the reliability and validity of the iPro Cube to measure salivary cortisol and α-amylase as compared to the common laboratory standard method (ELISA immunoassay) prior to and after moderate intensity exercise. Methods The study was a repeated measures, pre-registered design, and statistical framework that incorporated prior knowledge directly into the estimation process. Twenty-nine individuals (age = 27.4 ± 6.6 y; body-mass = 70.8 ± 11.3 kg; height = 1.74 ± 0.92 m; 18 males) completed a single PWC75%HRmax, with repeated measures of salivary cortisol and -amylase pre, immediately post, and 30 min post-exercise. Results Correlation between the iPro Cube and laboratory-based assessments of salivary cortisol was moderate-to-large (0.53 > r < 0.81) across all three testing points. In contrast, correlation between the iPro Cube and laboratory-based assessments of -amylase was small-to-moderate (0.25 > r < 0.46). We found a large correlation between duplicate samples of iPro Cube cortisol assessment (0.75 > r < 0.82), and a moderate-to-large correlation for -amylase (0.51> r < 0.77). Conclusions The iPro Cube is capable of taking measures of salivary cortisol that are moderately correlated to values obtained via ELISA immunoassay, however the unit underestimates salivary cortisol and overestimates salivary -amylase at rest and post-moderate intensity exercise. It is recommended that researchers continue using standard laboratory techniques to assess these salivary stress markers.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this paper, the author, a freelance writer and researcher who has worked in this way for over 30 years, draws on his own experience of independent working to present freelancing and well-being as an important yet neglected area of research. The paper is therefore presents a brief overview of the context of freelancing, particularly in the United Kingdom and Europe as this is the working environment of the author. This overview is blended with a review the existing research on the topic of freelancer well-being. The aim is to reveal the questions and issues that the author feels encompass well-being in this context as well as to highlight some recent initiatives where independent workers and their clients have worked together to support key areas of their vulnerability compared with those in full-time employment. Setting this often intensely personal perspective set against the wider context of academic and practitioner research reveals that, in contrast to some the common public opinion that freelance and contract work is ‘second-rate’ option, many independent professionals are happy about the way they work and experience high levels of job satisfaction. However, what does also emerge is that beyond local professional bodies and associations, many feel almost completely unsupported. Of greatest concern were reports of being treated with neglect and even suspicion by policy and law makers. The hope is that this paper heralds the beginnings of a wider research agenda into this important but neglected aspect of the independent professional workforce.
