IPv4 exhaustion leads to new IP version, which is IPv6. When changing a network from IPv4 to IPv6, Internet networks will be hybrid by using both IPv4 networks and IPv6 networks. This thesis defines the essential information about compatibility between IPv4-IPv6 mechanisms. Dual Stack is one of the IPv4-IPv6 compatible mechanism by running both IPv4 stack and IPv6 stack in a single node. 6 to 4 tunneling mechanism encrypts IPv6 packets in IPv4 packets to make communications possible, from IPv6 network over IPv4 network. Dual Stack & Tunneling mechanisms were completely implemented later in this thesis work. This thesis examine transmission latency, throughput, jitter and delay from end to end, through empirical observations of both Dual Stack and tunneling mechanisms by using TCP/UDP as transport protocols in different scenarios. This thesis work contains some useful strategic point of view before trying to deploy IPv6 in a network.

Today hundreds of millions of users are interconnected by communication channels allowing them to communicate and to share information. These users and the devices that interconnect them are what constitute the Internet. The Internet is a network of networks with a myriad of computer devices, including smartphones, game consoles (handheld/stationary), IP televisions, tablet computers, laptop computers, desktop computers, palmtop computers, etc. This network of computers flourishes because of careful planning and maintenance by Internet Service Providers (ISPs), backbone network operators, and others. An additional factor that enables the Internet to operate is the four logical layers of abstraction in the TCP/IP protocol stack. One of these layers is the layer responsible for the transfer of datagrams/packets from one host to another. This layer is known as the Internet Protocol (IP) layer. However, as originally conceived a 32 bit address was thought to be more than enough. The space of IP addresses was distributed among different regions rather disproportionately, driven largely by the numbers of addresses that were requested (ordered in time). Today after a series of inventions in the field (such as the world wide web) and a rapid growth in the number of devices that wish to connect to the Internet the available unassigned address space has largely been depleted. Regions with large populations, but with few assigned blocks of IP addresses have begun to exhaust all their assigned addresses, while other regions face the same fate in a few months. The need for a larger address space was predicted years ago and the next generation addressing scheme was devised as part of the development of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). Countries such as China and India had few IPv4 addresses and they have been forced to transition to IPv6 rather quickly. Today a significant number of the users in these countries are unable to communicate over IPv4 networks. The purpose of this thesis project is to discuss the transition to IPv6 and the transition to this new addressing scheme. IPv6 provides a much larger address space, along with a number of additional improvements in comparison to the previous version of IP (i.e., IPv4). Despite the advantages of adopting IPv6, the incentive to transition is low amongst well established businesses, especially those in regions that received a considerable number of IPv4 addresses initially. Instead different techniques have been employed in these places to mitigate the problem of IPv4 address exhaustion. It is also probable that this reluctance is a way to keep competing businesses out of the market for a while longer. This thesis aims to facilitate the transition from IPv4 to IPv6.<br>Miljontals användare är idag sammankopplade genom kommunikationskanaler som tillåter utbyte av information. Datornätet Internet utgörs av dessa användare och de enheter som sammanbinder dem. Internet är ett nätverk av nätverk med en myriad av olika datorutrustning såsom; spelkonsoler, smartphones, bärbara datorer, stationära datorer, handdatorer, även IPTV, kylskåp, tvättmaskiner, osv. Detta nätverk blomstrar på grund av noggrann planering och underhåll av internetleverantörer, nätoperatörer och andra. En ytterligare faktor som gör det möjligt för Internet att fungera är de fyra logiska skikt av abstaktion i TCP/IP-protokollstacken, en standard för datakommunikation. Ett av dessa skikt ansvarar för överföring av datapaket från en ändpunkt till en annan. Detta skikt är kallad Internet Protocol(IP) layer. Ursprungligen ansågs en 32-bitars adress vara mer än tillräcklig. Dessa IP-adresser delades ut till olika regioner rätt så oproportionerligt till stor del beroende på antalet adresser en region begärt. Idag efter en rad uppfinningar inom området(såsom webben/world wide web) och en snabb tillväxt i antal enheter som önskar ansluta sig till Internet är det tillgängliga adressutrymmet i stort sett slut. Regioner med stor befolkning men med få tilldelade block av IP-addresser har börjat göra slut på sina tilldelade adresser medan andra regioner står inför samma öde inom några månader. Behovet av ett större adressrymd sågs flera år sedan och nästa generations addresseringsschema utformades som en del av utveckligen, Internet Protocol version 6(IPv6). Länder som Kina och Indien hade ett fåtal IPv4-adresser och de har varit tvungna att övergå till IPv6 ganska snabbt. Idag kan inte ett stort antal användare i dessa länder kommunicera över IPv4-nätverk. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att diskutera övergången till IPv6 samt övergången till detta nya adresseringsschema. IPv6 ger en mycket större adressrymd samt en rad ytterligare förbättringar i jämförelse med den tidigare versionen av IP(dvs IPv4). Trots fördelarna med att övergå till IPv6 är viljan låg bland väletablerade företag, särskilt i regioner som mottagit ett stort antal IPv4-adresser från början. Dessa regioner tillämpar istället olika tekniker för att bromsa utmattningen av IPv4-adresser. Det är också troligt att denna motvija är ett sätt att hålla konkurrerande företag från marknaden ett tag till. Detta examensarbete syftar till att underlätta övergången från IPv4 till IPv6.

This thesis is the result of the bachelor’s thesis project “Evaluating an IPv4 and IPv6 network”. The IPv6 protocol was created with the main purpose of solving the problem of the depletion of IPaddresses that IPv4 is currently facing. This thesis gives an introduction to the differences between IPv4 and IPv6 and when one should use one protocol rather than the other. It describes the services that we will use in order to evaluate what kinds of problems IPv4 may experience and if these problems can be solved by using IPv6. We also show how to set up a network with both protocols for each service that we examine. We will subsequently evaluate the performance of these two protocols for each of these services. We found that there were no significant differences in the performance of any of the applications that we tested with both IPv4 and IPv6. Due to the depletion of IPv4 addresses and the continuing rapid growth of the Internet, this thesis describes a very current and a relevant issue for computer networks today.<br>Denna avhandling är resultatet utav högskoleingenjörsexamensarbetet ”Utvärdera ett IPv4- och IPv6 nätverk”. IPv6-protokollet skapades huvudsakligen för att lösa bristen på IP adresser som IPv4 står inför. Avhandlingen ger en introduktion till skillnaden mellan IPv4 och IPv6 och när det skulle vara mer lämpligt att använda det ena protokoll framför den andra. Den beskriver de tjänster som vi kommer att använda och utvärdera vilka typer av problem som IPv4 kan erfara och om dessa problem kan lösas med hjälp av IPv6. Vi förklarar också hur man sätter upp ett nätverk med de två protokollen för varje tjänst som vi utvärderar. Vi kommer sedermera utvärdera prestandan för båda protokollen för dessa tjänster. Vi kom fram till att det inte var några signifikanta skillnader i prestanda för någon av de applikationer som vi testade med både IPv4 och IPv6. På grund av utarmningen av IPv4-adresser och den snabba tillväxten av internet, så beskriver denna avhandling ett väldigt aktuellt och relevant problem i datornätverk idag.

<p>Internet grows, so it’s cracking, soon will all IPv4 addresses be allocated and a solution is urgently needed. The new protocol, IPv6 is the solution to this problem. With a size of 128 bits against IPv4s 32 bits gives IPv6 a huge amount of addresses to distribute. The security addition that may be added manually in IPv4 is the standard with the new protocol. To implement IPv6 will not get done over a day, and the various protocols are not talking with each other so the transition will be a problem. A solution for this is dual-stack that allows a node using both protocols.</p><p>The aim of the thesis is to examine how the reach ability is with IPv6 is on different pages, which claim to use dual-stack. To see if it was an improvement, the results will be compared with results from the survey Empirical Performance of IPv6 vs.. IPv4 under a Dual-Stack Environment. The aim has been achieved through the theoretically learn about IPv6 protocol. After this, a survey which was later compiled, compared and presented in this work. The survey results show that the IPv6 network has increased since the last survey. It also shows that practical with IPv4 is about the same level as in the investigation being compared. This indicates that dual-stack is used and that it will in time be moving in a pure IPv6 Internet.</p><br><p>Internet växer så det knakar, snart är alla IPv4 adresserna tilldelade och en lösningbehövs omgående. Det nya protokollet IPv6 är lösningen på detta problem. Med enstorlek på 128 bitar gentemot IPv4s 32 bitar ger IPv6 en ofantligt mycket störremängd adresser att dela ut. Efter dettagjort en undersökning som senare sammanställts, jämförts och presenterats i dettaarbete.Undersökningens resultat visar att IPv6 nätet har ökat de sedan den förraundersökningen. Det visar även att nåbarheten med IPv4 är ungefär på samma nivåsom vid undersökningen som jämförs med. Detta visar på att dual-stack används ochatt det tids nog kommer att gå över i ett renodlat IPv6 Internet.</p>

<p>Internet is growing every day and this is leading to an address depletion of the current IPv4 addresses. A new version of IPv4, called IPv6, is the protocol for addressing computers that will deal with this problem. IPv4 and IPv6 are unfortunately not compatible with each other. IPv4 and IPv6 have to co-exist for a long time until IPv6 will be the dominant protocol.</p><p>The purpose of this thesis is to examine how a transition could be done or more correctly, how to deploy IPv6 in an already existing IPv4 network. After that part of the report a case study at the local Internet service provider Junet AB will be conducted. This case study will investigate an IPv6 deployment scenario for Junet AB.</p><p>A theoretical background has been written that describes some steps an Internet service provider has to go through to deploy IPv6. The case study was conducted after the theoretical background was written. The result of this report shows that a deployment of IPv6 in an IPv4 network is technically achievable. All the main components to maintain and use IPv6 in a commercial network exist.</p><p>The case study indicates that it is possible to deploy IPv6 in Junet AB´s network. IPv4 and IPv6 could be used in their network without any major effort. IPv6 have been around for many years now but have not had that break through many early adopters have hoped for. A lack of documentation and experience is an obstacle for a deployment of IPv6.One thing that remains now is to prove that there is a need for IPv6, but that is out of scope for this thesis.</p>

<p>The Internet protocol of today has been used for over 20 years. A new version of the protocol has been developed to replace the old one. This is a direct result due to the explosive growth of the usage of the Internet. This follows by new demands which needs new solutions. This report brings up the old protocol IPv4, the new protocol IPv6 and shows what kind of changes that has been developed to meet the users demand.</p><p>The report brings up two important aspects; internet security and mobility. To show the important changes within these areas, the report compares the old protocol with the new one. Furthermore, the report also studies the world’s greatest test environment to this date. The aim of this is to show how the protocol behaves in reality and thereby get an insight to the specific areas that needs to be illustrated. To conclude the report, there is a broad discussion regarding the future of the two protocols and how this may effect the Internet in a future perspective.</p><br><p>Dagens Internetprotokoll är över 20 år gammalt och en ny version av protokollet har</p><p>utvecklats för att ersätta det befintliga. Detta är ett resultat av en explosionsartad</p><p>tillväxt av Internetanvändandet med nya krav som kräver nya lösningar. Rapporten tar upp det gamla protokollet IPv4, det nya protokollet IPv6 och visar vilka förändringar som har gjorts.</p><p>Speciellt viktiga aspekter i form av säkerhet och</p><p>mobilitet tas upp för att sedan jämföras mellan de olika protokollen. protocolo IPv6, será feita de uma forma progressiva recorrendo a mecanismos
de transição. Durante o processo de transição, torna-se necessário introduzir
serviços de rede que são considerados de importância chave para os
objectivos da Internet da próxima geração. Um desses serviços é a mobilidade.
Actualmente existem soluções que permitem realizar mobilidade IP em redes
IPv4 e mobilidade IP em redes IPv6. Contudo, ainda existem algumas
incertezas relativas à concretização da mobilidade IP em redes heterogéneas.
O IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) propõe diferentes mecanismos de
transição que permitem solucionar diversos aspectos relacionados com a
conectividade ponto-a-ponto em cenários de transição IPv4-IPv6. No entanto,
cada mecanismo de transição, por si só, não resolve o problema da
conectividade entre terminais móveis em diferentes cenários de transição e, no
caso geral, diferentes mecanismos deverão ser combinados para este fim.
Esta dissertação aborda o problema de providenciar o serviço de mobilidade IP
em redes mistas IPv4-IPv6. Para tal, primeiro são estudados em detalhe os
protocolos Mobile IPv4, Mobile IPv6 e os mecanismos de transição IPv4-IPv6
propostos pelo IETF. De seguida, é proposto um conjunto de cenários de
transição para o qual são estudadas as melhores formas de providenciar
mobilidade IP. As soluções apresentadas combinam diferentes mecanismos de
transição para permitir o serviço de mobilidade nos cenários propostos. As
soluções propostas foram validadas experimentalmente em laboratório
recorrendo ao uso de concretizações de mobilidade IPv4 e IPv6 e de
mecanismos de transição disponíveis.<br>It is known that the evolution of the current Internet, based on IPv4 protocol, to
the future IPv6 Internet will be based on transition scenarios. In this migrating
path, there is the need to introduce as soon as possible new network services
that are considered of key importance for the objectives of the future IPv6
Internet. One of these services is mobility.
Although there are already solutions to provide mobile IP in IPv4 networks and
in IPv6 networks, the provision of mobility in mixed IPv4/IPv6 networks has yet
many uncertainties. Currently, there are several transition mechanisms
proposed by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) to solve different aspects
on the provision of point-to-point IP connectivity in Pv4-IPv6 transition
scenarios. However, none of these mechanisms was aimed to address the
specific needs of mobile IP. In fact, there is no single IPv4-IPv6 transition
mechanism that can provide connectivity to mobile nodes.
This dissertation addresses the issue on how to combine the different transition
mechanisms in order to provide seamless mobile IP service.
We address the mobile service provision both to IPv4 and IPv6 hosts. These
solutions were validated in laboratory using available Mobile IPv4 and IPv6 and
transition mechanism available implementations.

IPv4-adresser är begränsat när det gäller antalet det finns att dela ut, ett framtida problem är att dessa adresser med största sannolikhet kommer att ta slut. Vårt arbete har således fokuserat på att inhämta information som bidrar till en klarare bild av hur dagsläget ser ut kopplat mot implementeringen av IPv6 som sker i Europa och Sverige. För att kunna förklara denna implementering på ett bra sätt finns det delar i arbetet som beskriver de tekniska hinder och möjligheter som bidrar till införandet av detta protokoll. Huvuddelen av tiden har spenderats med att inhämta information och fakta som ger en fördjupad kunskap i ämnet, med avsikten att skriva en gedigen bas som utredningsdelen i arbetet utger. Intervjuer har också varit en del, denna del finns i syfte att ge en bild över hur internetleverantörer arbetar med införandet av IPv6. De organisationer som finns och arbetar med införandet av IPv6 har alla en bra pool med fakta som beskriver hur situationen ser ut i dagsläget. RIPE NCCs databas visar klart och tydligt de organisationer som finns med i arbetet med implementeringen av IPv6. Denna databas samt information tagen från genomförda intervjuer ger oss en uppfattning om att införandet än så länge inte har kommit särskilt långt, detta i relation till bristen av IPv4 adresser som råder. I Sverige jobbar PTS mycket mot att hjälpa organisationer med en eventuell övergång till IPv6, deras arbete är ordentligt men problematiken där är istället att organisationer idag inte är i behov av denna information. Det positiva är således att informationen finns där, hos PTS, att hämta vid behov.Trots att de sista IPv4-blocken är utdelade finns det egentligen inget behov av att implementera IPv6 i dagsläget. Ett IPv4-nätverk med fungerande NAT fungerar och kommer med största sannolikhet fungera ett bra tag framöver.

<p>Allt ifrån persondatorer, mobiltelefoner och bilar kommer inom en snar framtid att vara uppkopplade mot Internet. Detta medför att varje enhet med en förbindelse till Internet kommer att behöva en unik IP-adress för att identifiera sig själv samt resten av Internet. Dagens Internet i form av IP version 4 (IPv4) kan inte hantera detta på grund av bristen på IPv4-adresser. Vidare saknar det nuvarande IPv4 trots det massiva antalet användare någon form av inbyggd säkerhet samtidigt som efterfrågan av nya tjänster samt teknologi från användare av Internet drastiskt ökar. Uppföljaren till IPv4, vars tekniska specifikation redan är färdigställd och standardiserad kallas IP Version 6 (IPv6). Det nyare IPv6 uppgraderar adressrymden som det äldre IPv4 tillhandahåller vilket löser problemet med sinande IPv4-adresser. Vidare förbättrar IPv6 säkerheten på Internet genom sitt inbyggda stöd för kryptering samtidigt som det erbjuder förbättrad tillförlitlighet, nya tjänster samt en rad tekniska fördelar över IPv4. Trots problemen med det utdaterade IPv4 som skapades för mer än 20 år sedan visar sig dock övergången från IPv4 till IPv6 svårartad. Utvecklingen av IPv6 varierar från en geografisk region till en annan. Företag och användare vet inte idag när de kan förvänta sig IPv6 samt dess tjänster från de stora Internetleverantörerna. Denna rapport ämnar undersöka vad det är som varit viktigast för att Internetleverantörerna ej övergått från IPv4 till IPv6 i större grad än vad som skett hittils. Resultatet av rapporten kan ge en insikt i vad det är som behöver förändras för att utvecklingen av IPv6 kan ta fart på riktigt. This thesis has compared the Mobile IPv4 and Mobile IPv6 to find out which of them performs better when it comes to send datagram from the correspondent node to the mobile node. The tests that were made to measure performance were latency, TCP/UDP throughput, loss and delay, as well as time measurement for connectivity loss for the mobile node while roaming. The tests were done using Cisco equipments and Microsoft Windows 7 Professional OS. Due to the hardware and software used, the route of datagram was the same in both scenarios since Cisco routers and Microsoft Windows 7 OS does not support route optimization for Mobile IPv6. The results showed that Mobile IPv4 performed better in all the tests done.

Today the internet is a world wide web connecting billions of devices. All these devices need an IP-address to be able to communicate with one another. With the current version of the internet protocol, IPv4, the address space is limited. To solve this problem a transition to the latest version, IPv6, has begun. But the transition is going slowly partly because of a temporary solution called NAT, Network Addressing Translation. With the help of interviews with highly appointed employees from large IT companies in Sweden, this study examines the impact of factors other than NAT that are affecting the speed of the transition, and why a technically advanced country like Sweden is so far behind in this process. The results show that the demand of the consumers is not high enough and that cost versus incentives is not balanced well enough for a transition to go quicker. But in time the speed will increase and further research could perhaps help the speed of the transition grow.<br>Idag är internet världsomspännande och miljarder av enheter är uppkopplade. Alla dessa enheter behöver en IP-adress för att kommunicera med varandra. Med den nuvarande versionen av internetprotokollet, IPv4, är adressrymden begränsad. För att lösa detta problem har en övergång till den senaste versionen, IPv6, påbörjats. Övergången går dock långsamt bland annat på grund av en temporär lösning kallad NAT, Network Addressing Translation. Med hjälp av intervjuer med högt uppsatta anställda på IT-företag i Sverige undersöker denna studie faktorer utöver NAT som påverkar hastigheten för övergången, och varför ett tekniskt avancerat land som Sverige ligger så långt efter med sin övergångsprocess. Resultaten visar att efterfrågan hos konsumenter inte är hög nog och att kostnad kontra incitament inte är tillräckligt välbalanserat för att övergången ska gå fortare. Med tiden kommer dock hastigheten att öka och vidare forskning skulle kunna hjälpa till att öka hastigheten för övergången ytterligare.

Det nuvarande Internetprotokollet (IPv4) utvecklades under tidigt 70-tal och har sedandess införande kommit och bli det dominerande protokollet för adresshantering. Vid dess skapelse så fanns det betydligt mindre enheter som behövde kommunicera med varandra. Idag så finns det betydligt fler enheter som behöver kommunicera och IPv4 klarar då inte av att hantera de krav som ställs. IPv4:s uppföljare IPv6 (IPng) står dock redo för att ta över facklan som det dominerande Internetprotokollet. Rapporten fokuserar på Skaraborgs kommuner och hur deras status för Ipv6 implementationen. Resultatet från undersökningen visar att flera utav de kommunerna som deltagit inte har påbörjat en övergång till IPv6. Samtidigt som kommunerna inte har påbörjat sin övergång till Ipv6 saknar även flera kommuner en tidsplan och utsatt deadline för Ipv6. Resultaten visar att kommunerna skiljer sig i avseende mot varandra där t.ex flera kommuner har börjat utbilda personal menads andra inte har gjort det. För sin övergång till ipv6 planerar flera kommuner att använda sig utav konsulter för att lösa de kommande kraven. Andra kommuner planerar att lägga ut hela arbetet på företag eller vänta till Ipv6 blir en del av vardagen.

The increase in the number of internet capable devices has starved the Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) address space. IPv6 is likely to replace IPv4 in the future because of an address space much greater than before. This thesis work focuses on how to transition from IPv4 to IPv6 for a specific network. This work includes a study of the most common transitioning techniques and an investigation of the characteristics of the network in question, Office IT-partner’s network. The main problem of the thesis is, based on the knowledge of existing transitioning techniques, to find the best fitting solution. The three best solutions were chosen for theoretical testing on the network. The solutions were tested with focus on network services, addressing, simplicity and future completion of the transition. The testing made it clear that no solution alone solves all problems, but dual stack together with translation satisfy the most requirements. The conclusion drawn from the literature study and the testing is that transitioning to IPv6 without the use of translation causes many complex problems. To successfully transition while providing IPv4 connectivity for WAN nodes, some kind of translation is almost required. A solution consisting of dual stack and Network Address Translation 64 (NAT64) was chosen because of its ability to make the transition easy and as user-friendly as possible. It could also be started right away and completed at a pace of own choice. The lack of ability to translate stateful from IPv4 to IPv6 together with the lack of availability for IPv4 nodes made up the decision of upgrading the internal network before upgrading the internet edge.

En migrering kan kräva att de två IP-versionerna måsteanvändas i nätverket simultant, för att de system som är beroende av nätverketska vara tillgängliga. Syftet med arbetet var att undersöka prestandani de olika migreringsteknikerna, samt att få fram vilka tekniker som är attföredra. Med hjälp av två scenarion, uppsatta i labbmiljö, testades migreringsteknikernasprestanda med verktyget Iperf. 6to4 och GRE testades iden ena miljön samt NAT64 och Teredo i den andra miljön. De nätverksegenskapersom analyserades var throughput, jitter samt packet loss. Resultatenvisade på att 6to4 och GRE är näst intill jämlika men att 6to4 haraningen bättre throughput än GRE. Större skillnad var det mellan NAT64och Teredo, där Teredo kunde uppmätas till en mycket högre hastighet medUDP-trafik än NAT64. The purpose ofthis study was to examine the performance of the different migration techniques,and find out which techniques are preferred. With the help of twoscenarios that were used in a test bed, a performance test was done usingthe Iperf tool. 6to4 and GRE were tested in one environment and NAT64and Teredo in the other environment. The network properties analyzed werethroughput, jitter and packet loss. The results showed that the 6to4 and GREare almost equally balanced but 6to4 has slightly better throughput thanGRE. A much more notable difference could be seen between NAT64 andTeredo, were Teredo was measured with a much higher transmission rate ofUDP traffic than NAT64. However, when TCP was used, NAT64 wasslightly faster than Teredo.

<p>Större krav på fler IP-adresser i framtiden har gjort IP(v6) till en tänkbar efterträdare till IP(v4). Sedan utvecklingen av IP(v6) runt 1994 står den fortfarande i skuggan av IP(v4). Detta beror troligen på att IP(v6) inte är bakåtkompatibelt med IP(v4), vilket leder till hög kostnad och energi att ersätta världens nätverk med IP(v6). Detta problem har gjort att ett flertal övergångstekniker har utvecklats. Detta kan vara genom att använda IP(v6) genom en dedikerad tunnel till att använda IP(v4) och IP(v6) parallellt. Dessa övergångstekniker skiljer sig åt när det gäller funktion och användningsområde, vilket gör val av övergångsteknik svårt.</p><p>Denna rapport handlar om dessa övergångstekniker. En inblick ges genom att beskriva hur dessa är uppbyggda, deras för- och nackdelar samt vilket användningsområde dessa är passade för. Arbetet är gjort på eget initiativ då behovet av kunskap kring IPv6 växer lavinartat och då privatpersoner troligen kommer att vara bland de sista som erbjuds IPv6 direkt från sin Internetleverantör.<br>This paper takes a theoretical as well as a practical approach to what IPv6 is in order to create an understanding for the new protocol. In addition to the theoretical review of the protocol, this paper also describes the work that has been done in order to create an implementation that is supposed to bring secure IPv6 support to both private individuals and smaller organizations, even if the Internet service provider only offers IPv4. This paper and implementation is done on a personal initiative, since the need for knowledge regarding IPv6 is rapidly increasing and private individuals probably will be among the last to be offered native IPv6 support from their Internet service providers.

This thesis assignment is meant to investigate and give a proof of concept solution for basic IPv6 support in Westermo Operating System (WeOS).The areas of interest this thesis involves are IP settings and routing support. IP settings include ability to activate IPv6, assigning address to interface and related tasks. Routing support imply creation of routes and default-gateway, that gives the switches basic IPv6 routing capabilities. Switches should be capable of sending IPv6 router advertisement messages, and perform static IPv6 routing.Performing changes in IPv6 support means that modifications in the Command Line Interface (CLI)-context are necessary, in order to make configuration user-friendly. Therefore a proposed extension of the CLI-syntax is required. Implementations of the proposed CLI-syntax are done into Westermo´s main operating system WeOS.Our work has fulfilled the general expectations and placed a foundation for IPv6 support. With IPv4 addresses running out there is a need for IPv6 compatible routers. This study aims to find open source routers that have support for IPv6 and compare it in terms of performance to IPv4 to see if there are any differences in performance. In addition to this the chosen routers have also been evaluated in terms of security and other desired features. An experiment and a theoretical study evaluating this was carried out to help companies and individuals wanting to use IPv6 make choices in what open source router to use. Different performance factors were taken in to consideration as well as security features. There were no significant differences between IPv6 and IPv4 with IPv4 slightly beating IPv6. Between the routers there were some differences with the VyOS router outperforming pfSense in terms of throughput but pfSense had lower latency values. Depending on the requirements for a specific network environment the results of this study could be used to pick an IPv6-enabled open source router distribution.

Denna rapport undersöker de två protokollens prestanda, avseende överföringskapacitet, jitter, paketförlust och CPU-belastning i operativsystemen Windows 7 och Ubuntu 10.10. Undersökningen genomfördes med hjälp av experiment och mätningar för att visa vilket protokoll och operativsystem som har bäst prestanda. Mätverktyget som användes är Iperf. Resultatet visar att det äldre protokollet presterar lite bättre än dess ersättare vid flertalet mätningar, såsom överföringskapacitet och paketförlust. Resultatet visar även att Windows fick en högre CPU-belastning än Ubuntu vid flertalet tillfällen.<br>The new internet protocol, IPv6 is differently structured and has a larger header compared to its predecessor, IPv4. This report examines the two protocols performance, in regard of transfer, jitter, packet loss and CPU-load on the two operating systems, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10:10. The survey was conducted by means of experiments and measurements to show which protocol and operating system that accomplishes the best performance. The measurement tool used in the experiments was Iperf. The result shows that the earlier protocol, IPv4, performs slightly better than its replacement in most measurements, such as transmission capacity and packet loss. The results also shows that Windows 7 has a higher CPU-load than Ubuntu on several occasions in the experiments.

I januari 2011 delades de två sista fria IPv4-adressblocken ut av Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) till den asiatiska Internetregistratorn Apnic (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre). Detta innebär att adresserna som fanns i den centrala adresspoolen nu är slut. Registratorn hade ansökt om dessa adressblock eftersom det råder akut brist på Internet Protocol version 4- (IPv4-adresser) i Asien samtidigt som Internetanvändarna i denna del av världen ökar explosionsartat (Magnusson, 2011a). Apnic delar ut adresser i Asien och Stilla havsregionen. Det begränsade adressutrymmet har lett till en ökad användning av Network Address Translation (NAT) för att lösa problemet med adressbristen i IPv4-protokollet (Das, 2008a). För att istället bemöta detta problem med en mer långsiktig lösning, utvecklades Internetprotokollet Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) med ändamålet att helt ersätta IPv4- protokollet (Das, 2008b). I Sverige hade regeringen som mål att samtliga svenska myndigheter skulle ha infört IPv6 senast år 2013. Trots detta föredrar idag fortfarande många myndigheter IPv4-protokollet framför IPv6 i de grundläggande tjänsterna. Med de grundläggande tjänsterna menas extern webbplats, Domain Name System (DNS) och e-post kommunikation (PTS, 2013). Anledningen till denna måluppsättning är att regeringen vill att myndigheternas e-tjänster ska vara framtidssäkrade och nåbara med IPv6. Post och telestyrelsen (PTS) har fått i uppdrag att följa hur det går med införandet av IPv6 (PTS, 2013). Utvecklingen tycks inte ha skett i den takt som regeringen önskat och idag står 22 % av alla myndigheter fortfarande helt utan IPv6 (PTS E-tjänster, 2013). IPv6 för med sig inbyggd säkerhet som t.ex. Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) men också nya säkerhetsproblem (Magnusson, 2011b). Rapporten behandlar de säkerhetsproblem som kan uppstå vid olika övergångsmekanismer och kommer även att beröra de problem som kan uppstå vid en samexistens av IPv6 och IPv4. Rapporten visar på nya resultat som att ämnet övergångsmekanismer med relaterade säkerhetsproblem är ett oerhört känsligt ämne för många administratörer i branschen. Kännedomen om kategoriseringen för övergångsmekanismerna var överraskande bra. Rapporten avslöjar även att majoriteten av undersökta organisationer har blivit negativt påverkade vid en övergång till IPv6.

Home automation is the systematic controlling and monitoring of everyday home devices such as lighting, heating, window blinds and appliances (both white goods and home electronics). This report describes how to control and monitor home appliances over IPv6 by using existing home automation hardware and an Internet connected gateway. There are many commercial home automation systems available. However, these are often proprietary and/or designed for limited use. This project seeks to pave the way for IP-enabling home appliances, making such devices part of the Internet. Therefore, these devices can individually be controlled both from within the home and remotely. Internet enabling each of these devices eliminates the need for special Internet connected control units, simplifying home automation and hopefully giving yet another incentive to deploy IPv6 on a larger scale. The practical goal of this project has been to create a virtual, but practically usable, IPv6 home automation system. This has been done using existing simple home automation hardware tied to a gateway relaying uniquely addressed IPv6 command messages to the appropriate device. This gateway's only function will be to translate IPv6 commands to whatever interface the device being controlled is using (this includes translating to and from the appropriate link and physical layers). Using this platform, new applications can be created by enabling the devices to interact without relying on a central control node. The report also describes the basic design ideas of a computer connected interface to also relay information from the home automation system to the Internet.<br>Hemautomation handlar om att styra och övervaka vanliga funktioner i hemmet såsom belysning, värme, persienner samt apparater såsom vitvaror och hemelektronik. Denna rapport beskriver hur man kan styra och övervaka sådana apparater över IPv6 genom att använda existerande hemautomationssystem och en internetansluten gateway. Det finns många tillgängliga hemautomationssystem men dessa är ofta tillverkarspecifika och/eller bara designade för väldigt specifika syften. Syftet med detta projekt är att bana väg för att få apparater i hemmet att kommunicera via IP och göra dem internetanslutna. På så sätt kan apparaterna styras både inom hemmet men även från andra platser. Genom att göra varje apparat internetansluten krävs ingen central internetansluten styrenhet, vilket skulle göra hemautomation enklare och bidra med ytterligare en bra anledning att implementera IPv6 på större skala. Målet för detta projekt har varit att skapa en virtuell, användbar prototyp av ett hemautomationssystem för IPv6. Detta har gjorts genom att använda existerande hårdvara för hemautomation och en PCbaserad gateway som översätter kontrollkommandon från IPv6 till det hemautomationssystem som används. Detta innebär att överföra data mellan olika länk- och fysiska lager. Genom att använda denna plattform kan man skapa nya applikationer där apparaterna kommunicerar mellan varandra utan att förlita sig på en central styrenhet. Denna rapport beskriver också grunderna för hur ett datorgränssnitt kan överföra information från anslutna apparater i hemmet till Internet.

Former chapters briefly describe IPv6 protocol format and protocols, methods and technologies related to IPv6. The thesis summarizes security risks and flaws in IPv6 and ICMPv6 protocols. In context of the risks and flaws the thesis describes several of local ICMP attacks. It also mentions security incidents resulting from exploiting those security flaws and means of countermeasures. One of the used countermeasures is passive monitoring of ICMP messages. Thesis contains brief description of tool used to achieve this - NDPMon with its advantages, disadvantages and concepts of usage. Rest of the thesis describes design and implementation of monitoring tool similar to NDPMon, but with some improvements.

Rapporten beskriver arbetet och resultaten av en prestandajämförelse mellan Teredo och 6to4, som används för att tunnla IPv6-trafik över publika IPv4-nätverk. Detta gjordes då ingen tidigare forskning hittats som jämför dessa tekniker ur prestandasynpunkt. Tre separata testmiljöer, en vardera för Teredo, 6to4 och 6to4 bakom NAT, sattes upp i en labbmiljö. I varje testmiljö skickades genererad trafik i åtta omgångar mellan två klienter, som samlade in testdata. Insamlad testdata bearbetades med formler för Throughput, End to End Delay, Round Trip Time och Jitter och ett medelresultat för varje räknades ut. Medelresultaten ställdes mot varandra i tabeller och grafer för överskådlig presentation och analys. Resultaten för End to End Delay ströks från prestandajämförelsen på grund av låg tillförlitlighet. Slutsatsen var att 6to4 presterade bättre än 6to4 bakom NAT vad gäller Throughput, Round Trip Time och Jitter i de tester som utförts. Orsaken till detta var den extra fördröjning som NAT gav när paket skickades och togs emot i testmiljön för 6to4 bakom NAT. På grund av skillnader i testmiljön hade resultaten för Teredo inte den tillförlitlighet som krävdes för att dra någon slutsats om teknikens prestanda gentemot 6to4 eller 6to4 bakom NAT.

Real time applications over IP network became widely used in different fields; social video conference, online educational lectures, industrial, military, and online robotic medical surgery. Online medical surgery over IP network has experienced rapid growth in the last few years primarily due to advances in technology (e.g., increased bandwidth; new cameras, monitors, and coder/decoders (CODECs)) and changes in the medical care environment (e.g., increased outpatient care, remote surgeries). The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze the impact of IP networks parameters; delay, jitter, throughput, and drop packet on the performance of real-time medical surgery videos sent across different IP networks; native IPv6, native IPv4, 6to4 and 6in4 tunneling transition mechanisms and compare the behavior of video packets over IP networks. The impact of each parameter over IP networks is examined by using different video codecs MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. This study has been carried out with two main parts; theoretical and practical part, the theoretical part of this study focused on the calculations of various delays in IP networks such as transmission, processing, propagation, and queuing delays for video packet, while the practical part includes; examining of video codecs throughput over IP networks by using jperf tool and examining delay, jitter, and packet drops for different packet sizes by using IDT-G tool and how these parameters can affect quality of received video. The obtained theoretical and practical results were presented in different tables and plotted into different graphs to show the performance of real time video over IP networks. These results confirmed that video codecs MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 were highly impacted by encapsulation and de-capsulation process except MPEG-4 codec, MPEG-4 was the least impacted by IPv4, IPv6, and IP transition mechanisms concerning throughput and wastage bandwidth. It also indicated that using IPv6-to-4 and IPv6-in-4 tunneling mechanisms caused more bandwidth wastage, high delay, jitter, and packet drop than IPv4 and IPv6.

Currently, the IPv4 protocol is heavily used by institutions, companies and individuals, but every day there is a higher number of devices connected to the network such as home appliances, mobile phones or tablets. Each machine or device needs to have its own IP address to communicate with other machines connected to Internet. This implies the need for multiple IP addresses for a single user and the current protocol begins to show some deficiencies due to IPv4 address space exhaustion. Therefore, for several years experts have been working on an IP protocol update: the IPv6 128-bit version can address up to about 340 quadrillion system devices concurrently. With IPv6, today, every person on the planet could have millions of devices simultaneously connected to the Internet. The choice of the IP protocol version affects the performance of the UMTS mobile network and the browsers as well. The aim of the project is to measure how the IPv6 protocol performs compared to the previous IPv4 protocol. It is expected that the IPv6 protocol generates a smaller amount of signalling and less time is required to fully load a web page. We have analysed some KPIs (IP data, signalling, web load time and battery) in lab environment using Smartphones, to observe the behaviour of both, the network and the device. The main conclusion of the thesis is that IPv6 really behaves as expected and generates savings in signalling, although the IP data generated is larger due to the size of the headers. However, there is still much work as only the most important webpages and the applications with a high level of market penetration operate well over the IPv6 protocol.<br>Cada día existe un mayor número de dispositivos conectados a la red, tales como electrodomésticos, teléfonos móviles inteligentes o tabletas, por lo que la red debe evolucionar constantemente y ser capaz de proveer servicio a todos los usuarios. Cada equipo necesita tener su propia dirección IP para comunicarse con otras máquinas conectadas a Internet, por lo que es necesario tener un gran número de direcciones IP y la versión del protocolo actual comienza a mostrar algunas deficiencias (debido fundamentalmente al agotamiento del espacio de direccionamiento IPv4 y algunas funciones de seguridad que han quedado obsoletas). Desde hace varios años, los expertos están trabajando en una actualización del protocolo IP: la versión seis (llamada IPv6) que utiliza 128 bits para el direccionamiento pudiendo administrar simultáneamente hasta unos 340 trillones de dispositivos al mismo tiempo. La elección de la versión del protocolo IP afecta al comportamiento de la red móvil, ya que los expertos todavía están optimizando y realizando cambios en la arquitectura de red y en los dispositivos para soportar el protocolo IPv6. El objetivo del proyecto consiste en comparar y evaluar las diferentes versiones del protocolo IP utilizado, en gran medida, para acceder a la red de internet. La principal conclusión del proyecto es que IPv6 realmente se comporta como se espera y genera ahorros en la señalización, aunque los datos IP generados son mayores. <p>Interoperation between IPv4 and IPv6 on a global scale is largely an unsolved problem, and in principle a problem without a proper solution. The 32-bit IPv4 address can simply not express all possible IPv6 hosts. Today, IP plays a double role. It is both a topological locator as well as a host identity. By decoupling the two roles a communication could also span over incompatible locator domains (e.g. IPv4 and IPv6). The Host Identity Protocol (HIP) [W16] uses this decoupling by providing two discrete data structures, one for the host identity and one for the interfaces locator. By extending HIP to allow differently formatted locators, and with the help of an Identity Router, one could cross past differing locator domains without the individual hosts needing to be configured for any particular domain other than their own.</p><p>The goal of this thesis is to investigate possible methods and architectures to allow this kind of locator domain interoperability and to implement a proof of concept gateway. The first part of the thesis consists of the exploration of the problem domain. Collecting the requirements of HIP enabled hosts, and to define a method for the interoperability of two HIP-hosts residing in two differing locator domains (IPv4/IPv6 will be assumed for scope limiting purposes). The output of this part will be a set of requirements, a suggested solution and a rationale for the chosen solution. The second part consists of the design and implementation of the required components for the interoperation. At the time of writing, the foreseen components will be: a parameter to HIP and a gateway, however, this is subject to change depending on the output of part one. With the huge amount of computers connected to the Internet the IP-addresses are starting to run out. The Internet Engineering Task Force, IETF, have decided that it is about time to exchange the old 32 bits Internet protocol, Ipv4, to a more modern 128 bits protocol called Ipv6. This thesis explores the possibility to install Ipv6 in different operating systems. By testing various operating systems and by set up criteria compare them to each other we give the reader a picture of how the installation is done. We also show which operating systems to prefer if you want to use IPv6. The chosen operating systems are different Windows versions and Linux RedHat versions. The result of our testing reveals that it does not really matter which of the more recent versions of the operating systems, Windows XP or Linux RedHat 7.2, you use since they have come quite far ahead in their Ipv6 development.

Den 21 januari 2011 delades de sista tillgängliga blocken av IPv4-adresser ut. Detta gör att dess efterträdare IPv6 är aktuellare än någonsin, då det snart inte finns några adresser kvar. IPv6 för med sig mer inbyggd säkerhet, men också nya säkerhetsrisker. Detta arbete undersöker vilka säkerhetsrisker gällande tillgänglighet som finns vid en övergång från IPv4 till IPv6 och vilken medvetenhet systemadministratörer har om dessa. Resultaten tyder på att det finns en mängd olika säkerhetsrisker vid övergången till IPv6. Många av riskerna uppkommer på grund av Neighbor Discovery Protocol. Andra risker uppstår på grund av extension headers, ICMPv6 och fragmentering. Vidare har det framkommit att systemadministratörer generellt har en låg medvetenhet om de säkerhetsrisker som förekommer vid en övergång från IPv4 till IPv6. Resultaten tyder på att medvetenheten ökar med utbildningsnivån samtidigt som praktisk erfarenhet av IPv6 inte verkar påverka systemadministratörernas medvetenhet.

IPv6 har, till skillnad från tidigare versioner av protokollet, inbyggt stöd för redundans hos gatewayenheter. Vid nyttjande av ett flertal gatewayenheter kan det, med hjälp av Neighbor Unreachability Detection, ske automatisk övergång till en ny gatewayenhet utifall att den aktiva skulle gå ur funktion. Innan IPv6 har man varit tvungen att förlita sig på externa lösningar för att uppnå denna redundans. Den huvudsakliga fråga som ställs i rapporten är om det inbyggda stödet för gatewayredundans i IPv6 är tillräckligt snabbt för att kunna nyttjas självständigt, utan att förlita sig på externa lösningar. För att kunna ta fram ett värde om vad som var ”tillräckligt snabbt” har vi, genom att läsa tidigare forskning om användares upplevelse av fördröjningar, kommit fram till att en fördröjning ej får överstiga tio sekunder. Rapporten undersöker även ifall det finns externa lösningar för gatewayredundans som arbetar tillräckligt snabbt, samt om det finns andra situationer där man kan föredra en extern lösning framför Neighbor Unreachability Detection. Efter ett antal experiment har vi kunnat klarlägga att det inbyggda stödet för gatewayredundans i IPv6 inte arbetar tillräckligt snabbt, enligt användare, för att självständigt klara av uppgiften. Undersökningar som beskrivs i rapporten visar även att ett externt First Hop Redundancy Protocol har god potential att återställa kommunikation tillräckligt snabbt för att en användare ska anse fördröjningen acceptabel. Dessutom bekräftar det här arbetet att det finns situationer där man kan föredra ett First Hop Redundancy Protocol framför Neighbor Unreachability Detection.<br>Unlike earlier versions of the Internet Protocol, IPv6 have native support for gateway redundancy. By using more than one gateway, Neighbor Unreachability Detection supports automatic switching to a new gateway in the case the active one fails. Before IPv6 you had to rely on external solutions to achieve this kind of redundancy. The main question that is set in the report is if the built-in support for gateway redundancy in IPv6 is fast enough to be used independently, without the use of external solutions. In order to obtain a value about what was “fast enough” we have, by reading previous research about how users experience delay, concluded that a delay must not exceed ten seconds. The report also examines if there are external solutions for gateway redundancy that operates quick enough, and if there are other situations where you might prefer an external solution over Neighbor Unreachability Detection. After a number of experiments we’ve been able to conclude that, according to users, the native support for gateway redundancy in IPv6 is not working fast enough to independently solve the task. Experiments described in the report also shows that an external First Hop Redundancy Protocol has good potential to restore communication fast enough for a user to find the delay acceptable. Furthermore the work confirms that there are situations where you might prefer a First Hop Redundancy Protocol over Neighbor Unreachability Detection.

The Internet is becoming increasingly fragmented, leading to a more heterogeneous end-user experience depending on the user's network location (i.e., point of attachment to the network). This is a consequence of several ongoing changes of the Internet. Different regions of the world are in different phases of their rollout of IPv6, making intercommunication increasingly challenging. Copyright legislation has caught up with ICT technology, but differences in licensing agreements may very from nation to nation which often hinders content being accessed beyond borders. Finally, several high-profile government attempts have been made to enforce stringent censorship of data. Therefore, we believe that a demand exists for simple consumer-oriented technologies for proxying and tunneling data between separate regions of the Internet. Furthermore, we believe that this demand will increase dramatically during the coming years. A key success factor for this next generation of proxies will be the ability to handle multicast IPv6 packets, as these packets represent the most probable distribution method for IPTV in the future. This thesis examines the challenges presented by IPv6 multicast-routing in the context of constructing a proxy. It also presents a best-practice solution to the problem of designing, implementing, and utilizing such a proxy. The thesis also contains a review of current IPv6 multicast routing technology. Several implementations are benchmarked against each other, with the goal of building a prototype for a consumer-oriented IPv6 multicast proxy. The prototype is presented and was tested. These tests demonstrate the functionality of the prototype proxy and reveal areas where the prototype could be improved. Finally a possible capitalization strategy is suggested.<br>Internet utvecklas mot att bli mer fragmenterat. Detta leder till en heterogen användarupplevelse beroende på uppkopplingspunkt. Utvecklingen är en konsekvens av flera pågående trender. Världens olika regioner ligger i ofas i utbyggnaden av IPv6 vilket medför nya tekniska utmaningar. Samtidigt har upphovsrättslagstiftningen hunnit ikapp teknikutvecklingen, så att länder med olika licensieringsmodeller inte kan dela innehåll. Slutligen försöker flera länder aktivt censurera datatrafik. Som konsekvens av detta ökar behovet för enkla konsumentorienterade metoder för att knyta ihop olika delar av Internet, så att åtkomst till data garanteras oavsett uppkopplingspunkt. Därmed förutspår vi att efterfrågan på produkter baserade på sofistikerad tunnelteknik kommer öka under de kommande åren. Denna rapport undersöker de utmaningar IPv6 multicast routing medför i samband med byggandet av en IPv6 multicast proxy. Rapporten presenterar en grundlig teoretisk genomgång av tekniken bakom IPv6 multicast routing. Vidare föreslås ett optimalt tillvägagångssätt för att designa, bygga och använda en sådan proxy. Flera existerande tekniker för multicast forwarding utvärderas och jämförs. Utifrån utvärderingen byggdes tre implementeringar av en IPv6 multicast proxy. Därefter analyseras dessa, tillsammans med förslag för fortsatta studier. Slutligen presenteras en möjlig kapitaliseringsstrategi för tekniken.

The IPv6 protocol offers with some new functions, one of them is auto configuration. With auto configuration it is possible for nodes, i.e. hosts and routers, for automatically associated with IPv6 addresses without manual configuration. Auto configuration it is another protocol as it uses Neighbor Discovery protocol (ND) messages (ND is mandatory in the IPv6 stack). The main purpose of ND is that nodes can discover other nodes on the local link, perform address resolution, check that addresses are unique, and check the reachability with active nodes. There are exactly the same vulnerabilities of IPv6 as IPv4 and is now exception, ND if not properly secured. IPsec is a standard security mechanism for IPv6 but it does not solve the problem of secure auto configuration due the bootstrapping problem. Therefore the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) introduced Secure Neighbor Discovery (SEND). SEND is a mechanism for authentication, message protection, and router authentication. One important element of SEND is the use of Cryptographically Generated Address (CGA) an important mechanism to prove that the sender of the ND message is the actual owner of the address it claims NDprotector is an open-source implementation of SEND served as the basis for the analysis presented in this report. This implementation was evaluated in a small lab environment against some attacks in order to establish if it can defend itself from these attacks.<br>IPv6 protokollet kom det ett par nya funktioner där en av dem är autokonfiguration. Autokonfiguration gör det möjligt för noder, d.v.s. hostar och routrar för att automatiskt bli tilldelade IPv6 adresser manuell konfigurering. För att autokonfiguration ska fungera så används Neighbor Discovery (ND) meddelanden som är ett obligatoriskt protokoll i IPv6- stacken. ND har till huvudsaklig uppgift att noder kan upptäcka andra noder på den lokala länken, utföra adressöversättningar, kolltrollera så att adresser är unika samt kontrollera tillgängligheten hos aktiva noder. Precis som IPv4 så har IPv6 en hel del sårbarheter och med ND så är det inget undantag då det inte är säkrat. IPsec som är en den standard säkerhets mekanism till IPv6 löser inte problemet på grund av bootstrapping problemet. Det var därför Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) introducerade Secure Neighbor Discovery (SEND). SEND är en mekanism för autentisering, meddelande skydd och router autentisering. En viktig del av SEND är Cryptographilcally Generated Address (CGA), en teknik som används för att försäkra sig så att det är den sändaren av ND meddelandet som är den riktiga ägaren av den hävdade adressen. NDprotector är en öppen källkods implementation av SEND som jag har valt att ha som grund för denna rapport. Jag kommer att sätta upp NDprotector i en liten labbmiljö där jag kommer att utföra olika attacker samt se efter om det klarar att försvara sig emot attackerna.

It has long been known that the number of unique IPv4-addresses would be exhausted because of the rapid expansion of the Internet and because countries such as China and India are becoming more and more connected to the rest of the world. IPv6 is a new version of the Internet Protocol which is supposed to succeed the old version, IPv4, in providing more addresses and new services. The biggest challenge of information and communication technology (ICT) today is to transition from IPv4 to IPv6. The purpose of this thesis is to accelerate the adoption of IPv6 by highlighting the benefits of it compared to IPv4. Although the need for more IP-addresses is the most urgent incentive for the transition to IPv6, other factors also exist. IPv6 offers many improvements to IPv4 which are necessary for the continued expansion of Internet-based applications and services. Some argue that we do not need to transition to IPv6 as the problems with IPv4, mainly the addressshortage, can be solved in other ways. One of the methods of doing this is by extending the use of Network Address Translators (NATs), but the majority of experts and specialists believe that NATs should not be seen as a long-term solution. Another difficulty with the new protocol is explaining its benefits and areas of use to both the business world and the public. Understanding these benefits are necessary in order create awareness of these benefits, thus to accelerating the adoption of IPv6. This thesis aims to explain the incentives for both businesses and the public to adopt IPv6.<br>Det har länge varit känt att antalet unika IPv4-adresser kommer att ta slut på grund av Internets rapida utveckling och på grund av att länder såsom Kina och Indien blir allt mer uppkopplade mot resten av världen. IPv6 är det nya Internetprotokollet som skall ersätta den nuvarande versionen, IPv4, genom att erbjuda fler IP-adresser och nya tjänster. Den största utmaningen inom ICT idag ligger i att påbörja övergången till det nya protokollet. Denna uppsats har som syfte att påskynda övergången till IPv6 genom att framhäva fördelarna med IPv6 jämfört med IPv4. Även fast bristen på IP-adresser är den största anledningen till att IPv6 behövs så finns det andra faktorer som också spelar in. IPv6 innehåller en mängd förbättringar jämfört med IPv4 som kommer vara nödvändiga för att Internet och Internetbaserade applikationer och tjänster skall fortsätta att utvecklas. Vissa menar att vi inte behöver byta till IPv6 och att problemen med IPv4, främst adressbristen, går att lösa på andra sätt. En sätt att göra detta på skulle vara att fortsätta att implementera användandet av Network Adress translators, men majoriteten av experter och specialister menar på att detta inte skall ses som någon långsiktig lösning. En annan svårighet med det nya protokollet är att förklara dess nödvändighet för företag och privatpersoner. Detta är nödvändigt för att påskynda övergången och skapa medvetenhet om IPv6, vilket vi hoppas göra genom denna rapport.

This master's thesis is focused on geolocation and visualization of IPv6 addresses. Several current approaches to geolocation have been discussed. Its main goal is to design geolocation database with regular updates with ability to visualize geographic location of the IPv6 address on the world map. Implemented system is gathering data about IPv6 prefixes from public Whois database. Gathered geographical addresses are mapped into coordinates by Google Maps Geocoding API. All gathered data are being saved into database together. Locations of IPv6 addresses are visualized via web-based Google Maps API. Moreover, the density mapping of IPv6 address blocks in particular countries can be visualized too.

Over the last years, we have witnessed a rapid deployment of real-time applications on the Internet as well as many research works about Quality of Service (QoS) in particularly IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4). The inevitable exhaustion of the remaining IPv4 address pool has become progressively evident. As the evolution of Internet Protocol (IP) continues, the deployment of IPv6 QoS is underway. Today, there is limited experience in the deployment of QoS for IPv6 traffic in MPLS backbone networks in conjunction with DiffServ (Differentiated Services) support. DiffServ itself does not have the ability to control the traffic which has been taken for end-to-end path while a number of links of the path are congested. In contrast, MPLS Traffic Engineering (TE) is accomplished to control the traffic and can set up end-to-end routing path before data has been forwarded. From the evolution of IPv4 QoS solutions, we know that the integration of DiffServ and MPLS TE satisfies the guaranteed QoS requirement for real-time applications. This thesis presents a QoS performance study of real-time applications such as voice and video conferencing over DiffServ with or without MPLS TE in IPv4/IPv6 networks using Optimized Network Engineering Tool (OPNET). This thesis also studies the interaction of Expedited Forwarding (EF), Assured Forwarding (AF) traffic aggregation, link congestion, as well as the effect of various performance metrics such as packet end-to-end delay, packet delay variation, queuing delay, throughput and packet loss. The effectiveness of DiffServ and MPLS TE integration in IPv4/IPv6 network is illustrated and analyzed. The thesis shows that IPv6 experiences more delay and loss performance than their IPv4 counterparts.<br>Author (1): Md. As wireless technology has improved, the demand for constant internet connectivity
increased. With the invention of Mobile IP, users are still more interested to have connection to
the internet while moving from one network to another. During the mobility, the mobile host
moves from one network to another, undergoes the handoff process, and registers with the new
network. Due to the scarcity of IPv4 addresses and other limitations, new Internet Protocol
version 6 (IPv6) has evolved. In the real world, planning is being done to deploy IPv6 along with
the IPv4 network. The IPv6 node should understand IPv4 addressing and its features while
communicating with it. When considering mobility in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks together, it is
a bit complicated where either the mobile host or any other entity in the network should
understand both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
In this thesis, research was centralized in the scenario where both internet protocol
versions IPv4 and IPv6 are active and mobility is introduced between them. The research deals
with the handoff process and registration of the mobile node with the agent in the new network.
The author proposed a new handoff algorithm with the basic security involved in the process
which can be used as model before planning to introduce mobility between IPv4 and IPv6
protocols. The significance of the algorithm is to reduce the handoff latency by enhancing the
functionality of the Tunnel End Point (TEP); this in turn reduces the tunneling of the data twice.
The research, analysis is done on the complete handoff process by varying different
parameters involved in the process. An analytical model is proposed to support the algorithm.
The effects of the parameters are studied. The results of the proposed analytical model were

As medições realizadas observaram o comportamento da vazão, latência, jitter e perda de pacotes, em três diferentes cenários experimentais: Rede IPv4, Rede IPv6 e Rede Pilha dupla. Os valores numéricos obtidos na análise das redes foram utilizados de forma incremental no programa de simulação ARENA, sendo modelada uma rede multisserviços com condições especiais para teste do impacto. O objetivo desta simulação é conhecer o impacto no comportamento dos serviços stream e elástico devido à variação de desempenho dos protocolos. Tais estudos objetivam ajudar aos administradores de redes no planejamento do período de transição e coexistência, possibilitando com que essa mudança nas redes de computadores possa ocorrer de forma mais suave<br>Abstract: This work evaluated a SOHO network (Small Office Home Office) in order to assess the impact of the IPv4, IPv6, and their transition protocols, on these networks. The experiments performed measured throughput, latency, jitter and packet loss in three experimental settings: IPv4, IPv6 and Dual Stack. The numeric values obtained in this experimental analysis were further applied, in an incremental fashion, to a multi-services network model built using the ARENA simulation software. The goal of this simulation was to obtain a better understanding of the behavior of both the stream and the elastic services as a function of the variation in protocol performance.
