Abstract:
This article investigates the translation of breaches of Gricean maxims (and other constraints on interaction) in situations where the “same” maxim/constraint displays different normative strengths within two cultures. It is argued that if a breach of such constraints is transferred directly, the result will be a different degree of attention-getting effect and a possible change in the implicature in the target text. This point is illustrated by the analysis of the Norwegian translation of the Irish novel The Commitments. Here the translator perhaps unwittingly ignores the fact that the “swearing constraint” is stronger in Norwegian than in Irish English. Many of the breaches are transferred more or less directly, which means that the translation contains a number of potential shifts: the potential attention-getting effect is far stronger, and the (social) implicature is most likely skewed, at least for a generalized segment of the audience.

In this paper, the effects of the culture water of three types of higher landscape plants Typha latifolia L, Canna indica L and Iris tectorum Maxim on the growth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa have been investigated. The results show that Iris culture water promoted the growth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, which was facilitated at low contentions and inhibited at high concentrations by the culture water of Canna indica L. Moreover, inhibitory effect of the culture water of Typha latifolia L was the strongest with the rate of 50.7%. Differences of the effects of the three plants on the chlorophyll a contents of Chlorella pyrenoidosa were significant (P Iris tectorum Maxim was utilized, whereas the content was lowest at merely 41% of that of the control group when treated with 80% of the culture water of Typha latifolia L.

Abstract:
Iris bungei Maxim. (IB), which is native to China and Mongolia, is used as a traditional medicine for conditions such as inflammation, cancer, and bacterial infections. However, the effects of Iris bungei Maxim. on adipocyte differentiation have not been studied. In the present study, we first demonstrated the molecular mechanisms underlying the adipogenic activity of the methanol extract of Mongolian I. bungei Maxim. (IB). IB significantly enhanced intracellular lipid accumulation and adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, IB markedly stimulated the expression of genes related to adipogenesis such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, adiponectin, and aP2. In addition, we also observed that IB induces lipogenic genes such as fatty acid synthase, sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c, stearoyl-CoA desaturase, and acetyl-CoA carboxylase. Interestingly IB regulated adipocyte differentiation in both the early and middle stages. Taken together, these adipogenic and lipogenic effects of IB suggest its efficacy for the prevention and/or treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract:
The botanical garden in Surgut is the northernmost in Western Siberia and one of the northernmost botanical gardens in Russia. It is the major point for promoting new agricultural and bio-logical technologies to the Far North. Currently, the collection of ornamental plants of the Surgut botanical garden comprises about 200 species and varieties of herbaceous plants belonging to 60 genera and 32 families, and more than 110 species of woody plants. The research objective is to study the adaptation mechanisms of some ornamental plants from the collection of the botanical garden using the up-to-date portable flavonoid and chlorophyll meter DUALEX. The research objects are five species of herbaceous plants of genus Iris L. – Iris hungarica Waldst. & Kit., Iris variegate L., Iris sibirica L., Iris glaucescens Bunge, Iris sulfurea C. Koch. and eight species of woody plants of genus Acer L. – Acer pseudoplatanus L., Acer rubrum L., Acer trautvetteri Medw., Acer tataricum L., Acer ukurunduense Trautv. & C.A. Mey., Acer spicatum Lam., Acer mandshuricum Maxim., Acer ginnala Maxim. The range of nitrogen balance (Nbi) in herbaceous plants varied from 32.2 to 39.7, and the chlorophyll content was from 48.1 to 58.6 mg/cm2. In woody plants, the content of chlorophyll (Chl) ranged from 23.9 mg/cm2 (Acer spicatum) to 31.3 mg/cm2 (Acer rubrum), i.e. only 1.3 times within the group species growing on one flank. The content of flavanols in woody plants ranged from 1.3 mg/cm2 in Acer mandshuricum to 1.9 mg/cm2 in Acer ukurunduense. The maximum values of Nbi, Chl indices for Iris hungarica and Acer pseudoplatanus are an adaptive reaction to growing conditions and indicate the formation of plantprotective functions. The pigment content of leaves in ornamental plants indicates their satisfactory physiological state, as evidenced by a slight variation in biochemical parameters among the tested groups of ornamental plants.

Abstract:
Satellite tracking of endangered or threatened animals can facilitate informed conservation by revealing priority areas for their protection. Basking sharks Cetorhinus maximus (n = 11) were tagged during the summers of 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 in the Isle of Man (IoM; median tracking duration 378 d, range: 89-804 d; median minimum straight-line distance travelled 541 km, range: 170-10406 km). Tracking revealed 3 movement patterns: (1) coastal movements within IoM and Irish waters, (2) summer northward movements to Scotland and (3) international movements to Morocco and Norway. One tagged shark was bycaught and released alive in the Celtic Sea. Basking sharks displayed inter-annual site fidelity to the Irish Sea (n = 3), a Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) in IoM waters (n = 1), and Moroccan waters (n = 1). Core distribution areas (50% kernel density estimation) of 5 satellite tracked sharks in IoM waters were compared with 3902 public sightings between 2005 and 2017, highlighting west and south coast hotspots. Location data gathered from satellite tagging broadly correspond to the current boundaries of MNRs in IoM waters. However, minor modifications of some MNR boundaries would incorporate ~20% more satellite tracking location data from this study, and protective measures for basking sharks in IoM waters could further aid conservation of the species at local, regional and international scales. We also show the first documented movement of a basking shark from the British Isles to Norway, and the longest ever track for a tagged basking shark (2 yr and 2 mo, 804 d).

Abstract:
Bioretention facilities have been widely used in the construction of Sponge City in China, but there have also been doubts about whether road runoff pollutants have adverse effects on plant growth. In response to this problem, this paper explored the effects of bioretention on the removal of pollutants and explored the effects of runoff on plant growth and physiology. The results showed that (1) the average concentration reduction rate and load removal rate of TN and NO3--N were above 70%, the average NH4+-N concentration reduction rate and load removal rate were greater than 90%, and the removal of elemental N was affected by the influent concentration. The removal effect of the four heavy metals was not very great. The average concentration reduction rate and load removal rate of heavy metals were 65.4–95.7% and 85.4–99.4%, respectively. The cumulative load removal rate of various pollutants was above 87.0%. (2) The runoff of high–concentration pollutants had a negative or no significant effects on the net photosynthesis rates (Pn), chlorophyll contents (CC), and electrolyte leakage (EL) of most plants (e.g., Iris tectorum Maxim, Rosa xanthina Lindl, and Ligustrum vicaryi). It had a significantly negative effect on the plant height of shrub plants (e.g., Rosa xanthina Lindl and Ligustrum vicaryi), but had a positive effect on Pn and CC of Iris lactea var. chinensis. (3) The runoff of low–concentration pollutants had a positive or no significant effects on the physiological indexes of herbaceous plants (e.g., Iris tectorum Maxim and Iris lactea var. chinensis), but there were no explicit conclusions regarding the physiological indicators of shrub plants (e.g., Rosa xanthina Lindl and Ligustrum vicaryi). It had no obvious effects on the plant height of these four species of plants.

Weilbach, Kasper. "Extent, timing and nature of retreat of the British-Irish Ice Sheet offshore of north-western Ireland during and following the Last Glacial Maximum." Thesis, Durham University, 2018. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12655/.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a long history of research that has attempted to reconstruct the extent and dynamics of the British-Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS) during the last glacial cycle. Early reconstructions of ice extent in Ireland were based on terrestrial evidence, and advocated a relatively restricted ice sheet during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that did not cover the whole of the island. More recent investigations from the continental shelf around Britain and Ireland reveal evidence for a much larger ice sheet, confluent with the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet in the North Sea and extending westwards onto the Atlantic continental shelf. However, offshore chronological control on the timing of ice sheet advance and retreat remain poor for many sectors of the continental shelf, particularly west and north-west of Ireland. This thesis brings together high-resolution multibeam swath bathymetry, sub-bottom proler data, and sedimentological, micropalaeontological and geochronological data, in order to reconstruct the extent, timing and dynamics of the last ice sheet in Donegal Bay and the adjoining north-western Irish continental shelf. This area is of interest due to its location adjacent to the North Atlantic and the Gulf Stream branch of the thermohaline circulation, making this sector of the BIIS sensitive to external forcing. The new data in this thesis show evidence for the extension of a grounded ice sheet to the shelf edge at or shortly after 26.3 cal ka BP, and thus during the LGM. Foraminiferal assemblages and lithofacies show that subsequent retreat took place in a glacimarine environment, and acoustic stratigraphic data show that the retreat was characterised by several still stands and re-advances, creating a series of arcuate moraines across the shelf. Chronological data constrain initial retreat from the shelf edge to before 24.8 cal ka BP, with formation of a large moraine at the mouth of Donegal Bay dated to between 20.2 and 17.9 cal ka BP. The results and interpretations presented in this thesis thereby offers a new interpretation of the extent, timing and nature of the north-western sector of the BIIS, offshore of Donegal Bay and across the adjacent continental shelf, during the LGM and the subsequent deglaciation.

Iris is one of the features of living things. It is the doughnut-shaped area between pupil and sclera. Iris itself is very delicate and weak, but it is still protected by eyelids, cornea and anterior chamber. Thus iris or eyes is one of organs which are well protected. As pointed in literatures, as if iris is not affected by ageing, all do its features remain unchanged from one-year-old till death. Except possessing the above stabilities, there is another characteristic, uniqueness. From medical reports, although identical twins are indistinguishable in appearance, their iris features are quite different. Even the iris features of the two eyes from one person have uniqueness, not to mention features from different identities. The foundation of human eye iris recognition system is based on the stability and uniqueness if iris. It can be said as biometric recognition system applied to entrance restrain, ATM etc, or e-economic identify recognition. The reasons why iris features is applied to recognition system , expect the above two characteristics, the most of all is that it is not easy to be copied. As a result, human eye iris recognition system is a reliable and safe recognition system. John Daugman developed the first iris recognition system using 2D Gabor filter and artificial neural network in 1993. Wides exploited serious iris recognition products using Laplacian-Pyramid in 1994 and W.W. Boles using 1D Wavelet transform. In This thesis, iris features are analyzed in 249 bytes iris code using mosaic and Maximum Spanning Trees (MST) method, and realize auto human eye iris recognition system by voice effects. In the first place, techniques for processing iris image are introduced. For blurred iris images, contrast stretching, histogram equalization or homomorphic filtering can be used to intense the image contrast, Description of iris images is done by space filter of first derivative or second derivative to stress iris texture. Low pass filters such as mean filter or gaussian filter are used to eliminate noise signals. In the following, iris code of iris image is constructed by Maximum Spanning Trees. At the last, auto human eye iris recognition system is completed by relativities of iris codes.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the place of Ulster and in particular the issue of Irish unity in the politics of Sir Oswald Mosley’s British Union of fascists. Mosley’s role in ending Black and Tan repression in Ireland during the War of Independence earned him a degree of Irish support throughout his political life, and which he sought to cultivate when he formed his fascist organisation through support for Irish unity. At the same time the chapter demonstrates that some of the organisation’s most prominent members supported Unionism and partition. This duality of approach was determined largely by the need to maximise and retain support from as many quarters as possible and by the play of politics, with the BUF cautiously critical of the Ulster Unionist regime in 1933-34 when the pro-Unionist press baron, Lord Rothermere, was supporting it, more aggressively nationalist when its pro-Unionist element diminished in the latter part of the decade.

Abstract:
This chapter side-lines Murdoch’s commitment to conventional realism to equate her well-documented love for nineteenth-century realist writing with a more esoteric enthusiasm for experimental European writing. It illustrates the ways in which she expands the novel form to maximise her novels’ emotional and moral impact, creating a fully synaesthetic style that she termed ‘a new vocabulary of experience’, inviting her readers to arrive at meaning not only through through the operation of logic, but also through an invasion of the senses. The chapter moves on to illustrate the variety of ways that Murdoch’s love of painting, colour, poetry, drama and music feeds into her idiosyncratic literary experimentation and concentrates on the more seductive, aesthetic aspects of her narratives that have been oddly neglected by generations of literary critics who commentate more exclusively on her indebtedness to conventional realism and direct equations between her philosophy and fiction.

Ireland has faced significant economic hardship since 2008, with the Irish radio industry suffering as advertising revenues evaporated. The difficult economic circumstances have forced radio station management to devise new and cost effective ways of generating much-needed income. The answer has come in the form of Facebook, the leading Social Network Site (SNS) in Ireland. Using Ireland as a case study, this chapter looks at how radio station management are utilising the social network strategically in a bid to enhance their audiences and revenues. Radio station management consider Facebook to be an invaluable promotional tool which is very easily integrated into radio programming and gives radio a digital online presence, reaching far greater audiences than possible through broadcasting. Some radio stations are showing ambition and are realising the marketing potential that Facebook and other SNSs hold. However, key changes in practice, technology and human resources are required to maximise the profit-making possibilities offered by Facebook.

Abstract:
With the wide spread utilization of Biometric identification systems, establishing the authenticity of biometric data itself has emerged as an important issue. In this chapter, a novel approach for creating a multimodal biometric system has been suggested. The multimodal biometric system is implemented using the different fusion schemes such as Average Fusion, Minimum Fusion, Maximum Fusion, Principal Component Analysis Fusion, Discrete Wavelet Transform Fusion, Stationary Wavelet Transform Fusion, Intensity Hue Saturation Fusion, Laplacian Gradient Fusion, Pyramid Gradient Fusion and Sparse Representation Fusion. In modality extraction level, the information extracted from different modalities is stored in vectors on the basis of their modality. These are then blended to produce a joint template which is the basis for the watermarking system. The fused image is applied as input along with the cover image to the Genetic Algorithm based Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm watermarking system. The standard images are used as cover images and performance was compared.

"(to supply a bicycle in ‘hireable’ condition), but they were also under a tortious duty to take reasonable care, and cl 11 did not cover that. Two further questions arise. First, what degree of explicitness will the courts require and, secondly, does this ‘clarity’ rule apply where the contracting party is only liable in negligence? As regards the former, there is probably no need to specifically mention fault or negligence, but equally general words, such as those used in White v John Warwick, will not be sufficient. A common drafting ploy is to use some expression such as ‘all loss however arising’ or ‘all damage or injury howsoever caused’. As regards the latter, it was originally thought that a clause in general terms necessarily did cover negligence since there was nothing else for it to attach to. In Alderslade v Hendon Laundry Co Ltd, the plaintiff left 10 large Irish linen handkerchiefs with the defendants to be cleaned. The defendants lost the handkerchiefs. The plaintiff claimed the cost of replacing the handkerchiefs. In their defence the laundry pleaded a clause in the agreement that ‘the maximum amount for lost or damaged articles is 20 times the charge made for laundering’ (an amount less that half the plaintiff’s claim). The Court of Appeal allowed the defence and overruled the decision at first instance in favour of the plaintiff: Alderslade v Hendon Laundry Co Ltd [1945] KB 189, CA, p 192." Abstract:
The IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure) project has completed the conceptual design phase and is moving towards completion of the preliminary design, scheduled for the end of 2002. Several other papers presented in this conference provide details on major aspects of the IRIS design. The three most innovative features which uniquely characterize IRIS are, in descending order of impact: 1. Safety-by-design, which takes maximum advantage of the integral configuration to eliminate from consideration some accidents, greatly lessen the consequence of other accident scenarios and decrease their probability of occurring; 2. Optimized maintenance, where the interval between maintenance shutdowns is extended to 48 months; and 3. Long core life, of at least four years without shuffling or partial refueling. Regarding feature 1, design and analyses will be supplemented by an extensive testing campaign to verify and demonstrate the performance of the integral components, individually as well as interactive systems. Test planning is being initiated. Test results will be factored into PRA analyses under an overall risk informed regulation approach, which is planned to be used in the IRIS licensing. Pre-application activities with NRC are also scheduled to start in mid 2002. Regarding feature 2, effort is being focused on advanced online diagnostics for the integral components, first of all the steam generators, which are the most critical component; several techniques are being investigated. Finally, a four year long life core design is well underway and some of the IRIS team members are examining higher enrichment, eight to ten year life cores which could be considered for reloads.

Abstract:
An electroactive polymer is a material capable of changing its size and shape when an electric field is present. It is composed of a thin film of dielectric elastomer and two electrodes placed on the top and bottom of the dielectric material. Since the rediscovery of their capabilities, electroactive polymers have been proposed as novel materials for use in numerous fields such as in bioengineering, electronics, hydraulics, and aerospace. It has been demonstrated that the actuation potential of electroactive polymer dielastomers can be significantly enhanced by mechanically pre-straining the material prior to application of an electric field. Application of uniform pre-strain is critical for uniform actuation and is challenging to achieve. This research details methods for constructing an automated uniform stretcher that resulted in the production of a LabView controlled iris stretcher for flexible materials. The high torque stretcher was capable of pre-straining materials with a minimum diameter of 1 inch mm) to a maximum diameter of 16 inches. The stretcher calculates the percent strain and has adjustable speed control through a high torque micro-stepper motor and controller. The stretcher’s capabilities were demonstrated on materials within varying tensile strengths up to 725 psi.
