In mammals, the pigment molecule pheomelanin confers red and yellow color to hair, and the intensity of this coloration is caused by variation in the amount of pheomelanin. Domestic dogs exhibit a wide range of pheomelanin intensity, ranging from the white coat of the Samoyed to the deep red coat of the Irish Setter. While several genetic variants have been associated with specific coat intensity phenotypes in certain dog breeds, they do not explain the majority of phenotypic variation across breeds. In order to gain further insight into the extent of multigenicity and epistatic interactions u

Hip joint laxity was evaluated in four breeds (i.e., greyhound, Labrador retriever, Irish setter, hound mixed-breed) of puppies (n=32) by Ortolani's and Bardens' maneuvers, by subjective assessment of radiographs (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals [OFA] method), and by four radiographic measurement indices. Puppies were studied at four, six-to-10, 16-to-18, and 52 weeks of age. The purpose of this study was to compare palpation and radiographic methods of hip laxity detection in puppies for predicting the development of degenerative joint disease (DJD) by one year of age. Abstract Efforts to transcend island histories in Irish historiography have predominantly centered a narration of white settler pasts as an outer boundary of Irish history. This article works through the disjunctions between differently situated transnational turns in Irish and Australian historiographies by interrogating metaphors of extension, including “Greater Ireland” in the former historiography. It proposes that to decenter the nation as a historical unit, transnational Irish history requires a critical tension with white settler, and not only Irish, methodological nationalisms. The art

Abstract Abstract 3779 Leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD) caused by CD18 deficiency is an autosomal recessive immunodeficiency which has been described in humans, Irish Setter dogs, Holstein cattle, and transgenic mice. We report here on the characterization of the clinical features and leukocyte function abnormalities of a novel feline model of leukocyte adhesion deficiency. The proband was a 5 year old male domestic longhair cat with a life-long history of infections, inflammation and granulomas. Severe gingivitis was recognized at 8 weeks of age which progressed to peridontitis and loss of

Aim. Determine the features of appearance, clinical signs and fatal risks in Irish setters with hereditary gluten enteropathy. Methods. The methods used were observation, eye examination, clinical examination, autopsy, histological. Results. It has been established that in hereditary gluten enteropathy in Irish setters there are violations of the parameters of appearance, weak ability to train, fulminant and chronic forms of damage to the intestinal wall by type of enteropathy, anaphylactic reactions and cerebral disorders. SUMMARY Morphologic changes in the small intestine were investigated during development of naturally acquired wheat-sensitive enteropathy in Irish Setters. To distinguish underlying morphologic abnormalities from non-specific effects of intestinal damage, progeny of affected dogs reared on a normal wheat-containing diet were compared with their own littermates reared on a cereal-free diet and with age-matched clinically normal Irish Setters fed the same wheat-containing diet. Peroral jejunal biopsy specimens were taken sequentially between 4 months and 1 year of age. At 4 months of age, there

SUMMARY Epidermal cell renewal time of seborrheic skin was estimated in 8 adult Cocker Spaniels and 5 adult Irish Setters, using autoradiography after [3H]thymidine was given intradermally. Cell renewal time of the viable epidermis was approximately 7 days. Seemingly, the seborrheic skin observed in these Cocker Spaniels and Irish Setters was associated with an altered rate of epidermal keratinization.

Abstract Objective To characterize histologic, biochemical, and ultrastructural changes in the intestine of Irish Setters susceptible to gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE) during controlled oral challenge exposure with gluten after weaning. Animals Six gluten-sensitive and 12 healthy Irish Setters and 3 healthy Greyhounds. Procedure Jejunal biopsy specimens were taken at 4 and 12 months of age from the 6 gluten-sensitive Irish Setters, which had been reared on a gluten-free diet to which a controlled dose of gluten (0.5 g/kg of body weight/d) was added. Control specimens were obtained at 4 (n
