Abstract:
La première partie du travail est une biographie détaillée et une présentation de la romancière allemande Irmgard Keun. Cette vie est étroitement liée à l'évolution de l’Allemagne, de 1910 à 1980. D'où l'intérêt d'une étude de cet auteur. Les grandes étapes de cette vie sont l'enfance berlinoise, l'adolescence et les débuts au théâtre à Cologne, les premiers succès d'écrivain à Berlin, l'exil, la vie clandestine en Allemagne de 1940 à 1945, les années d'après-guerre, le regain d'intérêt pour l'œuvre romanesque dans les années 1970 80. Le choix des trois romans se justifie: ils ont été publies respectivement en 1931, 1937 et 1950. Chaque roman est présenté dans son contexte économique, social, politique et culturel. La part la plus importante du travail est consacrée à l'analyse de la structure des récits et des particularités stylistiques, syntaxiques, thématiques de l'œuvre. Chaque roman est également étudié comparativement aux deux autres. Le portrait intellectuel de la romancière se précise à chaque étude. L'originalité d'Irmgard Keun réside essentiellement en ce qu'elle met en scène de jeunes héroïnes, démunies, originellement issues de la petite bourgeoise, et tout un éventail de petites gens. Perdues dans une société dont elles ne savent déchiffrer le code, ses héroïnes semblent raconter leur vie au jour le jour, avec un humour particulier. Les romans sont écrits sur le mode du journal intime, dans un style proche du style parle. Les récits trahissent la recherche d'une identité et une tentative de s'approprier le langage - ils se terminent tous sur une incertitude. Progressivement, I. Keun s'interroge sur le sens de l'écriture. Son dernier roman n'est plus qu'une succession de tableaux sans véritable enchainement. Après 1950, elle se réfugie dans le silence
The first part of the thesis is a detailed biography and a presentation of the german novelist, Irmgard Keun. Her life is closely bound to the historical evolution of germany between 1910 and 1980. Her is mainly interesting under this point of view. The headlines of her life are : the childhood in berlin, the youth in cologne and the first steps on stage, the first success as a writer in berlin, the exile until 1940, the underground life in nazi-germany until 1945, the immediate years after the war, the renewal in the 1970's '80s. The choice of the three novels has been made in regard of both the connection with the life of I. Keun and the evolution of germany. Each novel is placed back into its economical, social, political and cultural surrounding. The main part of the study is dedicated to the analysis of the narrative structure as well as to the style, the grammatical aspects and the specific topics of I. Keun's fiction - world. Each novel is related and compared to the two other ones. With the analysis of each book, the world of the author gains in accuracy. The great particularity of her writing remains that she mostly described young girls in her struggle for life. Her heroes are lost in an unfriendly world which they describe with a great deal of humor, in a confident, chattering manner. They are searching for their own identity and the apprpriate way to express themselves. All novels end with an interrogation over the meaning of life. Gradually, I. Keun's interrogation over the mere purpose of writing itself grows stronger and stronger. Her last book is a gathering of pictures without real connections between each others. After 1950, she stopped writing

Abstract:
This Master thesis examines the main characteristics of the 'New Objectivity' (Neue Sachlichkeit) appearing in Irmgard Keun's first novel, Gilgi---eine von uns (1931). The author uses in fact some stylistic elements of this movement to trace a portrait of her time, especially of trends emerging in the large city Cologne. The Weimar model of the emancipated woman, the so-called 'New Woman', serves as basis for Keun's depiction of her protagonist. Her representation was influenced by the image of the white-collar worker and of the Flaneuse (in the figure of her best friend). The comparison with other women figures emphazises Gilgi's emancipation. This paper aims at demonstrating, that her status as white-collar worker enables Keun's protagonist to criticize the social norms. In fact, she rejects the patriarchy of this society and proved herself being more emancipated than the other 'New Women' in taking on some men's roles.

Die vorliegende Studie analysiert in einem intertextuellen Vergleich die beiden Romane “Nach Mitternacht” von Irmgard Keun und “Kassandra” von Christa Wolf. Dabei wird in einem dialogischen Verfahren herausgearbeitet, wie die beiden Schriftstellerinnen durch die Stimmen der Hauptfiguren zu den Themen Emanzipation, Kriegserfahrung, Emigration und Flucht aus weiblicher Sicht Stellung nehmen. Es handelt sich um zwei Werke, die in einer Zeit der politischen Unterdrückung entstanden und die sich mit den Möglichkeiten auseinandersetzen, literarische Ehrlichkeit zu behalten, obwohl sich das Lesepublikum in einer Gesellschaft befindet, die unter strenger Zensur steht. Dabei wird besonders berücksichtigt, inwiefern sich die weibliche Erzählstimme abhebt von den Stimmen männlicher Erzähler in einer ähnlichen politischen Lage. Verschiedene Verzahnungen von Diktatur und Patriarchat werden durch die Perspektive weiblichen Erlebens und Erzählens beleuchtet. Im Vordergrund steht die Frage, ob sich die Sprache von weiblichen literarischen Figuren deutlich unterscheidet von dem Sprachgebrauch der männlich besetzten Heldenrollen, und wie sich dies in den beiden Romanen jeweils äußert. Die offizielle Sprache der Macht wird der subversiven Sprache der individuellen Stellungnahme gegenübergestellt.

She was a successful female writer before the Nazi Party took control of Germany in 1933. The findings of this study indicate that Keun novels show a realistic picture of Germany’s men-dominated society in the early 1930s.
