Iron is an essential micronutrient for life, but can be toxic in uncontrolled excess. Iron chelators have therefore become established therapeutics for the treatment of iron-overload disease, but they also show promise as anti-cancer drugs because of the additional role of iron in cell proliferation. Iron chelators have also been shown to protect skin cells from the effects of exposure to harmful levels of Ultraviolet A radiation (UVA). In fact, the harmful effects of UVA are now understood to be related to an increase in potentially harmful ‘labile’ intracellular iron, which results in the fo

UV-vis absorption revealed that EDDHA was able to interact with Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions directly. For the interactions of Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions with EDDHA, a new absorption peak was appeared at 463 nm and their interactions were 1:1 ratio. This new absorption is similar to the characteristic absorption 476 nm. The binding ability of Fe3+ and EDDHA was stronger than that of Fe2+ ion. For plant fertilizer, EDDHA/Fe3+

Cronje, Leandra. "Iron overload and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection: iron chelation modulates pathogen replication and monocyte-macrophage defence." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/340.

Abstract:
Background: Elevated levels of iron impair immune defence mechanisms specifically cell mediated immunity and macrophage function, favors infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), its replication, progression to clinical disease and death form tuberculosis (TB). Chelation of iron in individuals with an excessive iron burden may restore host defence mechanisms, decrease M.tb viability and replication and could find application in the prevention and treatment strategies in a setting where both iron overload and TB are prevalent. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of

Persulfate (Na2S2O8, PS) oxidant can be activated by transition metal ions such as ferrous ion (Fe2+) to produce a powerful sulfate free radicals (SO4-) for destruction of organic contaminants. Soil iron minerals can be used to activate persulfate. The use of chelating agent to chelate soil iron mineral, can effectively control the activation process to produce SO4-. M.Sc.<br>Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for a large fraction of the world’s infectious diseases, particularly AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) and Tuberculosis (TB) and at the same time, iron (Fe) overload is common to several of its regions. Excess Fe aids in the replication of both Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tuberculosis, Lounis, 2001; Georgiou, 2000) and also causes a malfunction of the host’s defense system and may ultimately lead to cell death. Not only does iron assist in pathogen survival but the pathogens themselves have a synergistic rel

Abstract:
Chelating phosphine ligands were used to enforce targeted coordination geometries onto complexes of iron and copper, thereby imparting molecular properties distinct relative to species studied previously in other geometries. The bulky bis(phosphino)borate ligand [Ph₂B(CH₂PtBu₂)₂]⁻ was used to provide trigonal planar complexes of Cu. This structural motif provided a rare opportunity for a single framework to stabilize Cu complexes in three discrete oxidation levels and allowed for the study of unique ligands including diazoalkanes, a diphenylcarbene, diarylamides, and a diarylaminyl
