The hydrolysis of iron(III) from sulphate bearing aqueous solutions was investigated to significantly improve the neutralization of acidic mineral effluents. Both theoretical and experimental studies were undertaken. Pentlandite (Fe4.5Ni4.5S8) and violarite (FeNi2S4) were synthesized by dry in vacuo techniques. The products were analysed by reflected light microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. The synthetic pentlandite was found to have an average stoichiometry of Fe4.35Ni4.65S8. A partial phase segregation of pentlandite into heazlewoodite and pyrrhotite was observed. Although iron-based permeable reactive barriers are gaining importance in the treatment of groundwater contaminants, there have been field observations indicating that sulphide may affect the degradation rates of certain chlorinated ethenes. Previous observations suggest that sulphide has little effect on TCE degradation rates but can cause a significant decline in the rate of degradation of cis-DCE.
