This article brings together the concept of dialogue in the Bakhtinian sense and the concept of irony with the aim to show how irony emerges in texts as a result of the dialogic interaction of voices. Two issues are discussed: first, evaluation as a regular and ubiquitous component of discourse. The polyphonic structure of a text or an utterance can signal evaluative meaning; multivoicedness functions as a marker of the narrator’s stance, especially if the voices juxtapose or incohere with each other. Second, incoherence as the trigger of ironic interpretation. Incoherence can emerge as a resu

Political discourse in the modern world is leaving its official frames and, according to its characteristics, is approaching the genre of talk-show with the elements of entertainment. Irony, being an important feature of modern political communication, manifests itself in ironic images — discourse tactics, chosen by politicians to implement their aims and achieve goals. The purpose of our study is to develop the ethno-discoursive theory of irony and to build the methodology of its studying as a communicative theory. The article analyzes one of the social functions of clichés in discourse – the expression of irony. It is generally believed that clichés do not convey new information and, consequently, worsen the quality of communication. However, the use of clichés to create irony is an example of the creative use of various “ready-made” patterns to express an implicit negative evaluation and mark social relationships between the speaker and the addressee. Etiquette phrases, rhetorical questions, proverbs and sayings, memes and idioms with initial positive evaluative meaning can be used to express irony. Be

This thesis is a problematisation of the teaching of art to young children. To problematise a domain of social endeavour, is, in Michel Foucault's terms, to ask how we come to believe that "something ... can and must be thought" (Foucault, 1985:7). The aim is to document what counts (i.e., what is sayable, thinkable, feelable) as proper art teaching in Queensland at this point ofhistorical time. In this sense, the thesis is a departure from more recognisable research on 'more effective' teaching, including critical studies of art teaching and early childhood teaching. It treats 'good

This thesis is an inquiry into leadership in early childhood education and care (ECEC). Leadership in ECEC is a key feature of contemporary early childhood policy positioned as a prerequisite for quality improvement. The method of collective biography was drawn on to investigate how leaders in early childhood produce understandings about ‘good’ leadership. This inquiry problematises notions of ‘good’ early childhood leadership. A number of ironic categories emerged that hold together competing and at times contradictory discourses, allowing for more complex understandings of leadership.
