This study researched the irony expression technique used in the genre of black comedy film <Don’t look up> released in 2021 on Netflix. Black comedy is a genre that has the purpose of criticism, and proper delivery of this critical viewpoint through films is critical in this genre. To expose the theme, a film <Don’t Look Up> makes full use of ironic expressions. The comical effect of these expressions maintain the light atmosphere of this film, while emphasizing the parts to be criticized. However, as cognitive linguists have discerned for many other aspects of language, much of the ways that people speak and understand one another is motivated by people’s pervasive bodily experiences. Ironic humor provides another compelling phenomenon in which to understand the embodied foundation of both linguistic meaning and multimodal expression, particularly in terms of rough-and-tumble

Abstract In this paper, the deterministic prediction of damage, via damage function analysis (DFA), which provides a robust technology for estimating the damage function at future times, is described. General analytical expressions for calculating the damage functions that can be used with arbitrary dependencies of pit nucleation rate, pit growth law and repassivation rate on the system parameters have been obtained. The application of DFA to the prediction of pitting damage is illustrated by reference to pitting corrosion of iron in neutral solutions.

Abstract A program has been developed for generating stability diagrams that concisely represent the thermodynamic state of multicomponent, multiphase aqueous systems in wide ranges of temperature and component concentrations. The diagrams are based on a thermodynamic model that combines the Helgeson-Kirkham-Flowers equation of state for standard-state properties with a solutions nonideality model based on the activity coefficient expressions developed by Bromley and Pitzer. The diagrams offer a flexible choice of independent variables, which include component concentrations in addition to the

Abstract A study of the hydrodynamic corrosion behaviour of carbon steel and cast irons in concentrated sulphuric acid has been made using the rotating cylinder electrode, (RCE), to simulate the corrosion phenomena that occurs under flowing conditions. The carbon steel-sulphuric acid system has been investigated by the present authors at sulphuric acid concentrations of 68%, 93% and 98%. In these systems the liquid concentration boundary layer has been identified as the sole resistance to mass transfer, and expressions have been deduced for the corrosion rate in terms of the physical and hydro

Abstract The aggressive behavior of carbonic acid solutions upon various steels has been widely investigated, but is yet not fully understood. In order to achieve more knowledge of the mechanisms of CO2 corrosion, simultaneous diffusion and homogenous chemical reactions have been simulated close to a corroding iron electrode, using kinetic data for the reactions involving CO2-related species and water. Many CO2 corrosion models predict mass transfer across the stagnant diffusion layer without considering contributions from homogenous chemical reactions.1-3 However, such reactions play a signif

Abstract This paper develops the relationships between proton reduction at the surface of metals, and hydrogen evolution or hydrogen diffusion into the metal. Equations relating the permeation rate to the proton reduction rate are developed in the case of adsorption - absorption mechanism, with Volmer - Tafel reactions. Analytical expressions are derived, and three distinct regimes are evidenced: i/a thin membrane - low current domain, where all reduced protons enter into the metal and diffuses to the exit face (i.e. the permeation rate is equal to the faradaic reaction rate); ii/a thin membra

Abstract Some theoretical considerations are discussed concerning the geometric shape of polarization curves and the width of the polarization potential intervals over which the asymptotic Tafel law is valid. These mathematical arguments are useful to introduce the treatment of the numerical method of successive approximations, which allows determination of the three electrochemical parameters Ic, Ba and Bc characterizing the kinetics of a corrosion process under the activation energy control. In particular, the technique proposed is shown to be readily obtainable from the analytic expressions

Our project focused on genes for high affinity iron acquisition in Cochliobolus heterostrophus, a necrotrophic pathogen of maize, and their intertwined relationship to oxidative stress status and virulence of the fungus on the host. An intriguing question was why mutants lacking the nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) gene (NPS6) responsible for synthesis of the extracellular siderophore, coprogen, are sensitive to oxidative stress. Our overall objective was to understand the mechanistic connection between iron stress and oxidative stress as related to virulence of a plant pathogen to its h

Fungal pathogens of plants produce a diverse array of small molecules. Often referred to as secondary metabolites because they were thought to be dispensable for basic functions, they may indeed have central roles as signals for the fungal cell, and in interactions with the host. We have identified more than a dozen genes encoding nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NPS) in Cochliobolusheterostrophus, the agent of southern corn leaf blight. The aim of this project was to identify roles of these genes in stress responses and signaling. The first objective was to test a complete collection of C. h
