Abstract:
Onion yield and grade were compared under sprinkler, subsurface drip, and furrow irrigation in 1992, 1993, and 1994. Furrow-irrigated onions were planted on two double rows on 1.12-m-wide beds at 352,000 seeds/ha. Sprinkler- and drip-irrigated onions were planted in nine single rows on a 2.24-m-wide bed at 432,100 seeds/acre. Drip plots had three drip lines buried 0.10 m deep in each 2.24-m bed. Soil water potential at 0.2-m depth was measured by tensiometers and granular matrix sensors (Watermark Model 200SS, Irrometer Co., Riverside, Calif.). Furrow irrigations were started when the soil wat

Onions are a significant source of revenue and food security for households. Despite their importance in human nutrition, economic benefit, and area coverage, in Ethiopia, onion productivity is significantly lower than it should be. The purpose of this study is to address this gap by examining efficiency variations and determining the variables that affect onion farmers’ levels of efficiency in the North Gondar Zone of Ethiopia. The sources of data were both primary and secondary. 205 onion farmers from the Gondar Zuria, Takusa, and Dembia districts were chosen using simple random sampling pro

Onion (Allium cepa L.) production in the Treasure Valley of eastern Oregon and southwestern Idaho has been based on furrow irrigation with 318 kg·ha-1 N fertilizer and average yields of 70 Mg·ha-1, but these practices have been implicated in nitrate contamination of groundwater. Drip irrigation, introduced in the early 1990s, has several advantages, including reduced leaching losses. Since onion plant populations and N fertilizer rates can affect economic returns, studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to determine optimum plant populations and N fertilizer rates for subsurface drip-ir

Summary The objective of this study, conducted in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, was to analyze the effect of surface and subsurface drip irrigation (with drip lateral placement depths of 0.05 and 0.1 m) on the yield and water productivity of onions (Allium cepa L., var. ‘Holandski žuti’). The irrigation applied was scheduled on the basis of the water balance method. The daily evapotranspiration rate was computed using the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) based on the Hargreaves equation and the crop coefficient (kc). The irrigation rate was 30 mm, whereas the amount of water ad

Onion is an important cash crop that could enhance the income of agro-pastoralists in Nyangatom woreda as the area has huge potential for water availability from the Omo River and fertile land. However, access to improved onion variety is limited in the area. Thus, this study aimed to demonstrate the improved onion variety with its agronomic management in the production season. Onion growers were purposely selected and have taken training on onion production by using recommended doses of fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, and suitable agronomic practices. The irrigated conditions of the Lower Volga region are characterised by long, very hot and often dry summers, which are favourable both for vegetables and for the development of weeds. Weed growth is a major cause of crop obscuration, pest and disease infestation, and yield loss. The main objective of the study was to develop an economically viable and effective system for protecting bulb onions from annual weeds under drip irrigation in the arid climate of the Astrakhan region. Two-year field studies were carried out to determine the impact of an irrigation system comprising a secondary reservoir and pressurized (microsprinkler and drip) irrigation method in a canal irrigated area. It was hypothesized that such a system with appropriate irrigation schedule would facilitate vegetable cultivation, which requires frequent watering. The experimental crop was onion, which was irrigated through microsprinkler and drip irrigation method at irrigation schedules of 0.60; 0.80; 1.00 and 1.20 of pan evaporation (Ep). Onions are highly responsive to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), but little is known about AMF communities in onion crops (∼10,000 ha) in the semiarid, irrigated region of the Columbia Basin of Washington and Oregon. AMF communities and root colonization were compared in organic and conventional onion fields, and between paired conventional fields that were fumigated or not with metam sodium. AMF were detected in all fields at all sampling times, with no differences in root colonization of onions used to bait soil from organic versus conventional and fumigated versus nonfumigated fields. The presented article displays the materials of the energy feasibility of the cultivation of onions in the Lower Volga. The production of onion on irrigated plantations becomes possible by introducing more modern technological methods of cultivation into the technological scheme, where the issues of optimization and energy saving, water and nutrient regimes of the soil come to the fore. But in modern times, the vegetable direction in this zone has some difficulties when growing on drip irrigation. First of all, this is insufficient financing of irrigated lands in operation, a significant part
