Abstract:
Abstract. Seasonal predictions of river flow can be exploited among others to optimise hydropower energy generation, navigability of rivers and irrigation management to decrease crop yield losses. This paper is the first of two papers dealing with a physical model-based system built to produce probabilistic seasonal hydrological forecasts, applied here to Europe. This paper presents the development of the system and the evaluation of its skill. The variable infiltration capacity (VIC) hydrological model is forced with bias-corrected output of ECMWF's seasonal forecast system 4. For the assessm

From 1999 to 2010, withering of white willow was observed on trees growing along roads or irrigation canals in Torino, Alessandria, and Vercelli provinces of Italy, with incidence varying from 15, 25, and 30%, respectively. In spring and autumn 2008, six samples from withering branches with bark cankers were collected. On the bark surface near the cankers, iridescent traces of dried ooze were found. Tissues immediately below the cankers were dark with water-soaked, olive-colored edges. In some cases, the xylem appeared affected. Small fragments taken from the affected tissue on both edges of b

Abstract:
Introduction: Current surgical site infection (SSI) prevention guidance indicates low-quality evidence supporting many of their recommendations. Subsequently, there is substantial variation in practice and often implementation of unsubstantiated interventions. There is therefore a need to rapidly evaluate best practices to prevent SSI. This survey aimed to evaluate current practice in the prevention of SSI and equipoise regarding potential interventions to reduce SSI rates in major lower limb amputation (MLLA) and groin incisions. Methods: A cross-sectional national survey was developed from c

Abstract:
Economists have never believed that trees would grow to the sky. They have always assumed, explicitly or implicitly, that some forces from the side of supply or demand would produce limits to growth. In the course of these recurrent speculations, they faced and wrote about many of the issues that the world economy will face, if I am more or less correct, in the century ahead. The first five chapters of this book dealt with characteristics of growth from the 18th century to the last decade of the 20th. In that interval, by and large, most men and women in the industrial world became accustomed
