Abstract:
Tom Cruise was one of the most financially successful stars of the 1980s and 1990s and remains an important Hollywood player. In his time at Paramount, he negotiated new deals which redefined how stars earned revenue from their films. Yet little substantial study has been made of him or his persona. Cruise came to prominence in the 1980s, an epoch which redefined the terms of masculinity, moving away from a particular martial ideal following American defeat in Vietnam. His persona addresses the consequent anxieties surrounding these significant social changes. In addition to this, his image can be understood within a psychoanalytic framework to be offering a 'compromise formation' to the difficulties of psychosexual development. Cruise appears to offers a challenge to the father, but in reality recedes from Oedipal threat. Chapter One examines the nascent Cruise star persona and its development across his films. The chapter provides a historical overview and contextualisation of the persona. Chapter Two explores how the persona offers a 'performative' model of masculinity based on a heroic martial ideal, as well as his positioning as an object of spectacle and the onscreen homoerotic relationships he enjoys. Chapter Three looks at the star's association with the racial 'other' and preoccupation with male friendships at the expense of heterosexual romance. Objectification through spectacle, which black characters and Cruise share in his films, indicate a symbolic shared powerlessness within the hegemony. Chapter Four argues that this lack of status is characterised by Cruise's struggle against male authority figures, which represent both corporate America and the punishing father. This relays the trauma of Oedipal struggle, which Cruise attempts to evade. Chapter Five looks in further depth at the Cruise persona's preoccupation with male bonds and lack of interest in women, both indicative of a regression from the phallic to the earlier anal/cannibalistic psycho-sexual stage, as he is unable to overcome the symbolic father . The thesis concludes by suggesting Cruise's persona is a compromise: it presents a triumphant young man who in reality is oppressed by patriarchal forces. This compromise is premised on youth and is threatened as Cruise ages, exaggerated by social changes within America. Biologically and socially, Cruise's persona is no longer tenable.

Introduction Movies are considered entertainment goods. Entertainment is one of the experience industries. Intangibility, perishability and heterogeneity are the most significant characteristics of the movie industry. An emotional reaction of consumers cannot be calculated in the same sense that most other physical goods can. If the movie succeeded in meeting the expectations, ticket price decreases will not necessarily indicate further purchases in the future. There are high risks and uncertainty in the movie industry. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to define through a hedonic price theory establishing whether the recognition is a significant factor to the global success of movies. The global success of the movies is determined by the global box office revenue. There are eight independent variables tested in this paper: global movie popularity, global popularity of the directors, global popularity of the authors, fame (determined by wining Academy Award), major studios, sequel, family genre and animation genre. Only one control variable, which is year of release, is included. Method The paper uses empirical model and the data set along with the results of the empirical analysis to achieve the purpose. Only secondary data were collected for the paper. Conclusion To reduce uncertainty in movie industry box office revenue, according to the data collected, recognition is significant to the consumers’ willingness to pay. The willingness to pay is determined by the global box office revenue. Only four independent variables, namely: sequels, Academy Award, the global popularity of the directors and the global popularity of the authors of the original script, are significant recognition factors to the global box office revenue. Movie producers shall be aware that consumers have to make sure utility gained from the consumption exceeds the costs in order to make purchases. Based on the sample collected, it can be summarized that consumers of the movie industry in general rely on previous consumption and recognition to reduce risks and uncertainty in terms of making purchases.

Realization of this modifications depends on correct definition of boundary conditions, analysis of damage occurrence as well as verification of carriage drafts with finite element method.

Abstract:
The question of homoerotic sensibility is, in the purpose of this thesis, a matter of visual language connected to the portrayal of male bodies. By identifying this sensibility throughout the western art canon the essay seeks to understand its origins, development and function in relation to expressions of power. With the introduction of theorists such as Alois Riegl, Laura Mulvey, Abigail Solomon-Godeau and Raewyn Connell, the aim is to deconstruct homosexual masculinity. Adapting formal analysis and parts of visual semiotics, the focus lies on the visual expression of power through the homoerotic gaze, and asks what consequences it has in forming homosexual identity. Greek antiquity is home not only to the ideals that foster western art history, but is also where we find early examples of same-sex affection being portrayed in the arts. Hence classical antiquity is so important for the homoerotic: whenever the classical language of style is popular throughout history, we are sure to find homoerotic sensibility. For reasons mentioned, the main periods analyzed are the Italian Renaissance, the French Neoclassicism and then, naturally the late 20th century onwards as this is the period of gay liberation and modern homosexual identity.  By identifying classical acceptance of homosexual relations only in the form of a clear social hierarchy, we soon discover how homosexuality has appropriated the idea of binary difference within its masculinity throughout history. Accepting relationships only between erastes and eromenos, or man and ephebe, homosexuality is forced to exist only on the terms of difference of power. With classical ideals, these tendencies are recurring in the visual representation of male homosexuality, and becomes a big part of the liberation and forming of a modern identity in the late twentieth century. As a result of objectification of the male body, in combination with idealized and sexualized power, modern gay culture has in many ways embraced a destructive culture shaped by misogynist ideas of hegemonic culture, where sexual violence exists, but is not spoken of.

Le présent mémoire porte sur le rapport du spectateur à la performance de star. Malgré la grande quantité d'analyses de star produites au sein des études cinématographiques depuis une trentaine d'années, il n'existe que peu de recherches portant spécifiquement sur la performance filmique de star. En effet, les adeptes des star studies n'utilisent la plupart du temps les performances filmiques que pour développer l'analyse de l'image globale de la star. A l'inverse, les tenants des performance studies prônent le rejet de tout élément extérieur au jeu d'acteur, afin que les chercheurs puissent enfin développer des outils d'analyse précis de l'impact du jeu d'acteur au cinéma. Dans les deux cas, ces approches négligent souvent l'importance cruciale du spectateur dans le rapport à la star. A travers la redéfinition de la performance spécifique de star comme figure de performance , ce mémoire désire observer l'articulation complexe de la performance de star du point de vue du spectateur. Fondée sur une quadruple articulation de sites de sens , la performance de star ne peut faire sens que lorsqu'elle est réappropriée par le spectateur qui la transforme en image mentale cohérente. Bound Together elucidates how gay and lesbian leather communities, in the years between 1966 and 1984, contested and expanded fungible notions of sex, community, and history, mostly through material and visual cultural systems: dress codes such as the hanky code, architectural spaces (bars, bathhouses, private clubs), garments, posters, advertisements, newsletters, films, and performances. In examining visual and material cultures, procedures of archival research, as well as the physical states of key archives associated with historic gay and lesbian leather communities, this dissertation opens out a discussion of a set of visual documents and terms rarely considered within the discipline of art history, or academia at large. Through rigorous rhetorical experimentation Bound Together seeks to propose new ways of writing histories. Long and short chapters are interpolated, telescoping between historical leather communities and key works of contemporary art which reformat 1970s documents and visual sources. Jean Luc-Nancy’s conception of “being-with,” a state of coterminous existence that lies at the foundation of being and subjecthood, provides an ideal framework for coming to terms with the challenges of writing leather histories. Nancy’s notion is one that privileges mutual and relational difference. The structure of Bound Together works similarly, building a set of differential modes of viewing, analyzing and writing. In this way I wish to, in the words of Tilottama Rajan, use “history as the condition for an internal distanciation and for self-reflection on what we do,” and to furthermore present alternatives to a discipline’s often “routinized, even commodified […] repeatable techniques.”

Plasma Resource Recovery (PRR) is a revolutionary technology that can treat virtually any type of waste by combining gasification with vitrification. Vitrification produces inert slag that can be used as a construction material. Gasification produces a fuel gas containing carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2), used for cogeneration of electricity and steam. The plasma fired eductor which is the core technology of the PRR system is presently being used commercially on a cruise ship at a scale of 5 TPD. The capabilities of the PRR technology have been demonstrated in a pilot plant, at a rate of up to 2 TPD of various types of waste. Because of the high intensity of the plasma flame and the reduced amounts of gases produced in a gasification system, compared to traditional combustion systems, the PRR system is typically very compact. As such, the PRR technology opens the door for a decentralized, small scale approach to waste management.

Abstract:
Following to the tightening of emission limit values in Europe between 1980 and 1990, complex, multi-stage plants have been installed for the gas cleaning systems downstream of waste incinerators. As a result of the extremely high investment and operating costs, a waste incineration was no longer economical. Due to the consistent advancement of semi-dry procedures, high-efficient cleaning systems could be developed, with reliable observance of the requested emission limit values at considerably lower investment and operating costs. The Conditioning Rotor–Recycle Process with particle conditioning offers such a procedure. It mainly comprises the component parts for additive powder injection (CaO / Ca(OH)2, AC), reaction chamber with conditioning rotor, fabric filter and multiple particle re-circulation with wetting of recycled particulate prior to reinjection into reactor. This system allows the simultaneous separation of particles, heavy metals, incl. mercury and mercury compounds, acid crude gas components such as HF, HCl, SOx as well as dioxins / furans. The approx. 50fold particle re-circulation combined with the wetting of the recycled particulate grants the high effectiveness of this system with regard to the separation capacity and the additive powder consumption. The efficiency is described on the basis of several application examples from the field of waste incinerators. The presentation includes among other things the degrees of separation and the emission limit values in comparison with definitely more complex scrubbing systems. The process is also provided with an up-to-date control device for the additive powder injection. Based on crude gas measurements of the acid crude gas components, HCl and SOx, as well as on measurements of the volume flow, the additive powder is injected in dosed quantities in accordance with a given stoichiometric factor. The control concept is explained by means of a practical example. Furthermore, results will be presented, showing the advantages of the Conditioning Rotor – Recycle Process with particle conditioning relating to the expenses for consumable supplies, compared to a conventional spray sorption for the separation of acid crude gas components, as used for many plants in the USA. A comparison of the emission limit values for waste incinerators in the USA and Europe shows, that the presented process is also suited for the American market and offers cost advantages for the operators of waste incinerators.

Abstract Tight oil reservoir plays an increasingly important role in the world energy system, but its recovery is always so low. Hence, a more effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology is urgently needed. Meanwhile, greenhouse effect is more and more serious, a more effective carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) method is also badly needed. Direct current voltage assisted carbonated water-flooding is a new technology that combines direct current voltage with carbonated water-flooding to enhance oil recovery and CO2 sequestration efficiency, simultaneously. Experimental studies were conducted from macroscopic-scale to microscopic-scale to study the performance and mechanism of direct current voltage assisted carbonated water-flooding. Firstly, core flood experiments were implemented to study the effect of direct current voltage assisted carbonated water on oil recovery and CO2 sequestration efficiency. Secondly, contact angle and interfacial tension/dilatational rheology were measured to analyze the effect of direct current voltage assisted carbonated water on crude oil-water-rock interaction. Thirdly, total organic carbon (TOC), gas chromatography (GC), and electrospray ionization-fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry (ESI FT ICR-MS) were used to investigate the organic composition change of produced effluents and crude oil in direct current voltage assisted carbonated water treatment. Through direct current voltage assisted carbonated water-flooding experiments, the following results can be obtained. Firstly, direct current voltage assisted carbonated waterflooding showed greater EOR capacity and CO2 sequestration efficiency than individual carbonated water and direct current voltage treatment. With the increase of direct current voltage, oil recovery increases to 38.67% at 1.6V/cm which much higher than 29.07% of carbonated water-flooding and then decreases, meanwhile, CO2 output decreases to only 35.5% at 1.6V/cm which much lower than 45.6% of carbonated water-flooding and then increases. Secondly, in direct current voltage assisted carbonated water-flooding, the wettability alteration is mainly caused by carbonated water and the effect of direct current can be neglected. While both carbonated water and direct current have evident influence on interfacial properties. Herein, with direct current voltage increasing, the interfacial tension firstly decreases and then increases, the interfacial viscoelasticity initially strengthens and then weakens. Thirdly, GC results indicated that crude oil cracking into lighter components occurs during direct current voltage assisted carbonated water-flooding, with the short-chain organic components increasing and the long-chain components decreasing. Meanwhile, TOC and ESI FT ICR-MS results illustrated that CO2 electroreduction do occur in direct current voltage assisted carbonated water-flooding with the dissolved organic molecules increases and the emergence of formic acid. Conclusively, the synergy of CO2 electrochemical reduction into formic acid in aqueous solution and the long-chain molecules electrostimulation pyrolysis into short ones in crude oil mutually resulted in the enhancement of crude oil-carbonated water interaction. This paper proposed a new EOR & CCS technology-direct current voltage assisted carbonated water-flooding. It showed great research and application potential on tight oil development and greenhouse gas control. More work needs to be done to further explore its mechanism. This paper constructs a multiscale & interdisciplinary research system to study the multidisciplinary (EOR&CCS) problem. Specifically, a series connected physical (Core displacement, Contact angle, and Interfacial tension/rheology measurements) and chemistry (TOC, GS, and ESI FT ICR-MS) experiments are combined to explore its regularity and several physics (Atomic physics) and chemistry (Electrochemistry/Inorganic Chemistry) theories are applied to explain its mechanisms.

The need for high quality simulation to support cyclic life estimation of IGT hot parts is obvious. With increasing computational resources it is now feasible to perform fully 3D simulations using viscoplastic models. The superalloy Haynes 230 has been analyzed and modelled to support design against excessive deformation and Thermo Mechanical Fatigue (TMF). This requires a model which can accurately predict the stress corresponding to 1% creep after 40000h and the inelastic strain range in the stabilized loop. The one most important aspect of the modelling was identified as ‘how to predict the low temperature yield strength in the stabilized loop’, i.e. after TMF cycling with long holding times at service temperature. Haynes 230 is delivered in an unstable solutioned state and precipitates secondary carbides in service. The resulting carbide morphology, and therefore the mechanical properties, depends on the strain range and the service temperature. The dense distribution of fine carbides after cycling at 600°C, and the corresponding very high cyclic hardening, indicates that TMF cycling with a service temperature of 600 °C results in a corresponding increase in the low temperature yield strength. If the service temperature is high, over ageing will occur and the low temperature yield strength will decrease instead. This has been taken into account in a novel ‘crude but useful’ model containing a stabilized yield strength which depends explicitly on the service temperature. The modelling has been backed by case specific testing and SEM/TEM studies. The model has been implemented in ABAQUS and is being used. Further analysis will refine the model through improved understanding of the precipitation and ageing process, and also extend it to similar materials such as Hastelloy-X, 800H, 253MA and Haynes HR-120.

Substantial seismic and well data have been gathered and used for the exploration and exploitation of the Salawati Basin since the 1970s. The interpretation of these data and implementation of findings resulted into several discoveries and producing fields associated with the Tertiary petroleum system of Klasafet-Kais, particularly in the Walio Area. The presence of pre-Tertiary petroleum systems remain speculative to date although numerous pre-Tertiary structural and stratigraphic traps can be defined, and hypothetical sourcing can be inferred to origin from shales of the Permo-Triassic Aifam Group and the Late Jurassic – Late Cretaceous Kembelangan Formation. Yet the actual hydrocarbon charging of those traps has not been proven. Surface geochemical surveys were conducted in the Walio Area with the objective to characterize the origin of hydrocarbons of the area and possibly uncover the presence of a pre-Tertiary source. Pre-Tertiary sediments are encountered in three exploration wells of the Walio Area and pre-Tertiary traps were defined by the interpretation of 3D seismic. Surface geochemical surveys were conducted in the Walio Area to map the distribution of oil and gas microseeps and try to determine their source. Whole oil chromatography and isotope & biomarker analysis were also performed on Kais reservoired oil samples to determine source rock lithology, depositional environment, and age. Hydrocarbon analysis of one-meter-deep soil samples revealed the distribution of volatile and liquid hydrocarbon microseeps in the survey area. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Rock-Eval Pyrolysis measurement was carried out to outcrop samples of the Klasafet Fm., Kembelangan Fm., Tipuma Fm., and Aifat Fm. The outcrop samples resulted in lean TOC, and produced very low S2 values to which the Tmax cannot be estimated. Hydrocarbon microseeps were found occurring over and off existing fields and pre-Tertiary traps. Both light oil microseeps (35° API) and heavy oil microseeps (14° API) were identified over fresh and biodegraded crude oil Kais reservoirs, respectively in the Walio Area. Microseeps with lighter hydrocarbon compositions (e.g. C5/C17 ratio) may reflect leakage from deeper pre-Tertiary sources.

ABSTRACT The boom in the development of unconventional petroleum resources, particularly shale gas in the United States of America during the last decade has had far reaching implications for energy markets across the world and particularly for Nigeria, a country that traditionally has been Africa’s leading crude oil producer and exporter. The Cretaceous Anambra Basin is currently the only inland basin in Nigeria where the existence of commercial quantities of oil and gas has been proven (outside the Tertiary Niger Delta Basin). The possibility of similarly finding commercially viable resources of unconventional petroleum resources in the basin appears quite attractive on the basis of the existence of seepages of shale oil and presence of coal-bed methane in some of the coal seams of the Mamu Formation (Lower Coal Measures) in the basin. This paper presents the results of our preliminary assessment of the shale oil and gas resources of the Anambra Basin. Our main objective is to locate the zones of very high quality plays within the basin, focusing on their depositional environments (whether marine or non-marine), areal extent of the target shale formations, gross shale intervals, total organic content, and thermal maturity. Data on the total organic content (TOC %, by weight) and thermal maturity of shales from different wells in the basin show that many of the shales have high TOCs (i.e greater than 2%) comparable to known shale gas and shale oil plays globally. Shale oil seepages are known to occur around Lokpanta in south-eastern Nigeria, but there is a general predominance of gas-prone facies in our inland basins indicating good prospects for finding unconventional petroleum in this and other Nigerian inland sedimentary basins. The main challenge to the exploration of unconventional resources in Nigeria today has to do with the absence of the enabling laws and regulatory framework governing their exploration and subsequent exploitation. The revised Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) currently under consideration in the National Assembly is expected to introduce drastic and lasting changes in the way the petroleum industry business is conducted in the country, but all the provisions of the draft law pertain mainly to conventional oil and gas resources.

Hilly terrain poses challenges to truck platoons using fixed set speed cruise control. Driving the front truck efficiently on hilly terrain improves both trucks fuel economies and improves gap maintenance between the trucks. An experimentally-validated simulation model was used to show fuel savings for the platoon of 12.3% when the front truck uses long horizon predictive cruise control (LH-PCC), 8.7% when the front truck uses flexible set speed cruise control, and only 1.2% when the front truck uses fixed set speed cruise control. Purdue, Peloton, and Cummins have jointly configured two Peterbilt 579 trucks for relevant combinations of: (1) coordinated shifting, (2) constant or variable platoon gap controls, (3) flexible or constant speed setpoint cruise control of the front trucks, and (4) long-horizon predictive cruise control (LHPCC) of the front truck. Confirmation of this functionality during platooning was demonstrated at the Continental Test track in Uvalde, Texas. In Indiana, on-road experiments were limited to single truck operation with long-horizon predictive cruise control, flexible set speed cruise control, and constant setpoint cruise control. Data from all of the above was used to improve the fidelity of simulations used to arrive at the fuel savings and gap control findings for hilly terrain per what is summarized in the findings section. Additionally, in early summer 2020, Purdue submitted to, and received improvement from, INDOT for a safe truck platoon testing protocol (located in this report’s appendix), which could not be implemented in Indiana before the end of the project because of COVID-19.
