Research on the status of women in the international studies profession has typically focused on the distributions of women and men according to academic rank, salaries, and employment. A number of detailed case studies have explored practices in particular academic departments and universities in order to elucidate the mechanisms in place that help to reproduce gender inequality. The bible is indeed a world of the strange and mysterious when it comes to the variety of creatures that are presented in its texts. These often times serve as images of good versus evil, or order versus chaos. Flat and narrowly myopic literal readings of the bible that at times lacks for imagination and creative insight to the bible’s occasional and amazingly metaphorical maze fall far short of what is needed to appreciate the full depth of the biblical world’s imagery. Therefore this work explores the meaning of the bible’s mysterious creatures with an emphasis on three creatures that all ap

Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār is one of the Ḥanafite-Māturīdite scholars in the 6th/12th century. In his work titled Talkhīṣ al-adilla li-qawāʿid al-tawḥīd on kalām, he spared extensive space for al-asmāʾ al-husnā. Approximately one third of this work, published in two volumes, is devoted to al-asmāʾ al-husnā. An examination of the related section reveals that al-Ṣaffār explains many issues, particularly those

This chapter examines the role of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in global ocean governance. In particular, it highlights the assumption of ISA's explicit mandate for environmental protection as an integral aspect of its overall governance of the deep sea-bed ‘Area’ beyond national jurisdiction, especially following the 1994 Implementation Agreement to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This assumption is particularly significant given the fact that the ISA work programme has now progressed to the point where as of 31 January 2017, a total of twenty-si

In this chapter, the results of a comparative study of the two parallel texts Isa 15-16 and Jer 48, together with the contrasts in style and subject matter between Isa 16:1-5 and the surrounding poem, suggest that 16:1-5 was not part of the original poem about Moab. The sudden 1st person YHWH speech in 15:9b and the clear example of reapplication of an older oracle in 16:13-14 came from one editor sometime during the Neo-Babylonian period before Moab ceased to be a meaningful political force, who understood the original poem to have been in two parts. 16:4b-5 is characterized as an expectation

Deciding whether to perform arterial access closure using the gold standard of manual compression versus a vascular closure device (VCD) requires the operator to evaluate many characteristics of the patient. The location of the arteriotomy, vessel size, degree of calcification, use of anticoagulants, and sheath size during the procedure are the primary factors that need to be considered. This study argues that a series of programmatic additions were made to the oracles concerning the nations in Isa 13-23 during the late-exilic period by the same circle of writers who were responsible for Isa 40-55. These additions were made to create continuity between the ancient oracles against the nations from the Isaiah tradition and the future fate of the same nations as the late-exilic redactor(s) foresaw. The additions portray a two-sided vision concerning the nations. One group of passages (14:1-2; 14:32b; 16:1-4a; 18:7) depicts a positive turn for certain nations while the other group

International relations (IR) theory is favorably described in almost every syllabus since 1930. The most important questions asked were: “What is theory?” and “Is there a reason for IR theory?” The most widely used texts all focus on the first question and suggest, among others, that IR theory is “a way of making the world or some part of it more intelligible or better understood.” We can gauge where the teaching of IR theory is today by analyzing a sample of syllabi from IR scholars serving on the Advisory Board of the International Studies Association’s (ISA) Compendium Project. In this book Stephen Phillips focuses on one of the most important poems about meditation in world literature, as understood by two of the greatest philosophers of India, one classical, one modern. Sankara’s commentaries on the Upanisads are a core of the Vedanta tradition and Aurobindo is a towering figure of 20th-century Hindu thought. This is the first time their approaches have been studied together. The Isa (c. 500 BCE) an “Upanisad” belongs to a genre of “adhyatmika” learning—concerning self and consciousness—in early Indian literature. According to the Ancient Indian tradition of yoga,
