Abstract:
Abstract. In 1997, reliable operation of the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) was achieved and a rocket launching facility at Ny Ålesund on Svalbard (79°N, 12°E) (SVALRAK) was established. On 20 November, 1977, the first instrumented payload was launched from SVALRAK. Although the payload configuration had been flown many times previously from Andøya Rocket Range on the Norwegian mainland, this presented an unprecedented in situ determination of positive ion density over Svalbard. Simultaneously, ESR measured similar density profiles but in a higher altitude regime. We have combined the ESR measurements with ionosonde data to establish a calibration and subsequently combined the ground-based and in situ determined profiles to give a composite positive ion density profile from the mesosphere to the thermosphere.Key words: Ionosphere (polar ionosphere; instruments and techniques)

Abstract:
Georg Brandes’ betydninger i Henrik Pontoppidans Lykke-Per, Grønlands i IsbjørnenGreenlands and man of the modern break-throughLykke-Per and Isbjørnen by Henrik Pontoppidan both seem to contain the author’s opinions on Georg Brandes and Greenland wrapped in fiction. By way of author theory and postcolonial criticism this article argues, however, that the two novels have no narratological or ideological central perspective. They are perhaps best understood as montages of discourses on Brandes and Greenland.

Abstract:
We present a journey through the history of the Austrian Arctic collections stored in Geological-Paleontological Department of the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHMW). The NHMW-material was mainly acquired during four expeditions. The first was an Isbjørn expedition designed as a test cruise by Julius Payer and Carl Weyprecht in 1871. One year later, there was a second Isbjørn expedition under the command of Count Johann Wilczek. In 1873, Richard von Drasche, an industrial magnate with geological expertise, organized a private trip to eastern Spitzbergen (Svalbard). The fourth one was from 1872 to 1874, when Payer and Weyprecht led the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition on the ship Admiral Tegetthoff. The latter, which almost ended in a catastrophe, discovered Franz-Josef-Land. After these expeditions, Austria took part in the First International Polar Year (1882–1883), with its own research station at Jan Mayen. There are numerous types provided by these expeditions that make this collection and its archival material an important source for the geological history of the Arctic region.
