Abstract:

Abstract:
The number of the companies owned by Japanese capital doing business in Turkey has been increasing significantly in recent years and this fact adds a tangible dimension to the amount of cultural contact between two societies. This situation makes it possible, at least in the workplace, to be able to have a face to face contact with Japanese without ever going to Japan. It also paves the way to the creation of new impressions based on personal experience. In this article, at first, the impressions and images of Japanese gained through earlier contacts in history and the way they are reflected nowadays particularly on the media will be mentioned; afterwards, based on the interviews held with Turkish white collar workers working either in a Japanese company or a company with a Japanese capital share, their experiences with the Japanese and Japanese culture will tried to be interpreted. Interviews took place between the years 2013 and 2017 and were held with approximately thirty five participants. Similar experiences of the interviewees are gathered under thematic headings and tried to be interpreted throughout the article. The results of the research show clearly that two totally different cultures are at issue when it comes to expression and communication styles. Nevertheless, based on the interviews and the ongoing projects, cooperation and joint venture is far from being a dream. The opposite traits can work out harmoniously as long as two sides ancticipate what they will face with in the workplace. While this article and the studies alike are expected to increase the inter cultural dialogue and cooperation among cultures especially in professional life, it is also significant in the sense that it highlights the changes in the representations of Japanese throughout time and history.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file.ÖzetSon yıllarda Türkiye’de yatırım yapan Japon sermayeli şirketlerin sayısı giderek artmaktadır ve bu durum iki ülke arasındaki kültürel temasa somut bir boyut eklemiştir.

Abstract:

The 1979 and 2017 national surveys of full-time international faculty at Japanese universities show numerous important changes. The proportion of female academics has increased, and Japanese universities hire more international faculty in high academic positions, doing research in the hard sciences, and originating from China and Korea. Today, the vast majority of international faculty come to Japan for academic reasons, and have more positive perceptions of the Japanese academic market and their Japanese colleagues.

Abstract:
This article maps the controversy over whether and where glaciers once flowed through the Japanese Alps. Focusing on the first decades of this century-long debate, we examine how a small-scale revolution in geological thinking was shaped by the particular institutional constraints and alpine enthusiasms of Meiji Japan (1868–1912). To do so, we turn to Yamasaki Naomasa and Kojima Usui—close friends and pioneers in their respective fields of geography and mountaineering—to show how alpinism helped to launch glaciology as a scientific discipline in Japan. By chronicling the hunt for evidence of ancient glaciers, we further reveal how the Japanese Alpine Club formed a vital forum for the glacier debate pending the emergence of a community of professional glaciologists.

Higher education institutions have undergone significant changes concerning college admissions. Leading countries for higher education, such as the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as countries in Asia such as China, Korea, and Taiwan are making changes to their higher education systems. There is also a call for change in college admissions in Japan. Japanese universities, especially national universities, have heavily relied on test scores for student selection. However, universities are currently shifting theircollege admissions processes toward a holistic review approach. This involves making admission decisions by assessing not only academic achievements, but also students’ backgrounds, personal experience, and potential. This task was initiated by the government in response to the changing concepts of knowledge and fairness, as well as the perceived desirability of attracting students with diverse educational backgrounds. For higher education institutions both in Japan and abroad, college admission reforms become a necessary process. Japan, where the government has the most power for making decisions, offers other countriespriceless lessons about how top-down education/admission reforms are implemented or impeded.

Abstract:
The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers internationally recognized programs that prepare students to think and act critically and independently as internationally competent individuals. IB has recently undergone a rapid worldwide expansion as an increasing number of educational systems are recognizing the value of nurturing globally prepared citizens. Japan, in particular, has witnessed a recent increase in the spread of IB programs because of the government-initiated push to increase the number of IB schools to 200 by 2020. The IB Dual Language Program (English and Japanese) was created to support this initiative. This article sheds light on the trend of IB expansion worldwide through the lens of the Japanese experience and addresses challenges and opportunities that this expansion has brought to Japanese higher education.

Abstract:
Backgrounds: In the United States, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) announced a competency model for infection preventionists (IP) in 2011. On the other hand, IPs in Japan must develop their career by themselves because there are no guidelines of career development for Japanese IPs. In recent years, infectious diseases and infection control issues have become more global. Objective: Aiming for international collaboration among IPs, the purpose of this study were to clarify the actual competencies of IPs in Japan and the United States and to compare the competencies of both. We report on the competencies of IPs in Japan. Methods: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 67 certified nurses in infection control (CNIC) who responded to the translated version of the APIC Competency Model Assessment Tool. From the qualitative descriptive analysis of interview verbatim records, we extracted the behavioral characteristics and completed the questionnaire “Survey of Competency for Infection Preventionist,” which consisted of 130 items. A survey form was created using Survey Monkey. We sent e-mails to ask anonymous survey collaboration, including the URL of the survey form, to 2,284 CNIC and CNS in infection control professionals. The research was approved by the research ethics committee at the facility to which the researcher belongs (Juntendo University, approval no. 30–49). Results: The number of responses was 648 and the response rate was 28.4%. The mean years of experience as nurses of 648 respondents was 24.7 (SD, 6.9), and >60% belonged to general hospitals. The scores of mean and standard deviation of each category were as follows: “Clarification of infectious disease process” (mean, 79.1; SD, 13.2); “HAI surveillance and epidemiological survey” (mean, 49.3; SD, 12.3); “Prevention and control of transmission of infectious microorganisms” (mean, 93.8; SD, 17.3); “Management and communication” (mean, 128.5; SD, 23.7); “Education and Research” (mean, 56.8; SD, 11.0); “Employee and occupational health” (mean, 40.6; SD, 9.6); and the total score of all categories (mean, 449.4; SD, 74.4). Based on years of experience as infection preventionists, we divided them into 3 groups: beginners, competent, and experts. As the career level increased, each category score for competency increased (ANOVA, P < .001). However, the mean scores of competency did not reach 70% of the total score for the following categories: “Prevention and control of transmission of infectious microorganisms.” “Education and research,” and “Employee and occupational health.” Conclusions: The competencies that need to be strengthened for the career development of Japanese IPs have been clarified.Funding: This study was supported by JSPS KAKENHI.Disclosures: None

Abstract:
A new world-class university policy called the Designated National University scheme was introduced in Japan in 2017. Six national universities are now given a distinguished legal status, differentiating them from all other national universities, and are expected to be competitive with leading universities worldwide. However, the government expects the selected universities to be capable of generating their own income. In light of the uncertainty surrounding the highly complex mechanism linking knowledge activities at universities and industrial commercialization, this appears to be a risk-taking policy.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the policy development and program implementation of CAMPUS Asia, a policy jointly initiated by the governments of Japan, China, and Korea. It illustrates that internationalization efforts bring opportunities for university practitioners to apply non-traditional types of teaching and learning in Japan, such as experiential, active, and collaborative learning models. The program implementation is a learning process for students as well as teaching and administrating staff. The ‘East Asia Leaders’ program identifies the following indicators for the further development and implementation of meaningful multicultural joint programs: (1) the quality in teaching and coordinating staff in terms of pedagogical understandings, (2) the development of outcome measurement schemes for intercultural learning in the East Asian context, and (3) the examination of differences in pre-knowledge and social/personal expectations of students.

Abstract:
Severe damages in aboveground storage tanks (AST) have been often experienced due to earthquakes in Japan. In this paper, earthquake damages of ASTs which occurred for the last several decades are reviewed. These are damages in the 1964 Niigata Earthquake, the 1978 Miyagi Earthquake, the 1983 Sea of Japan Earthquake, the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, the 2003 Hokkaido Earthquake and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The damages of ASTs can be classified into 3 types in accordance with the characteristics of earthquake. These are the impulsive motion due to a high frequency earthquake, the sloshing motion due to a low frequency earthquake and the tsunami attack. In the impulsive motion, buckling of sidewall plates and uplift of sidewall-to-bottom joints occurred. In the sloshing motion, sinking of floating roofs into liquid and buckling of sidewall-to-roof joints occurred. In the tsunami attack, ASTs moved and overturned to leak oil.

Abstract:
AbstractAimsDeath ideation (thinking about/wishing for one's own death, thinking that one would be better off dead) is linked to an increased mortality risk. However, comparatively little is known about more general thoughts of death (GTOD) where no wish to die or life value is expressed. This study examined whether GTOD predicted mortality in a community-based cohort of older adults.MethodsData came from the Komo-Ise cohort study in Gunma prefecture, Japan. The analytic sample comprised 8208 individuals (average age 61.3 (range 47–77)) who were asked in wave 2 of the study in 2000 if they had ‘Thought about death more than usual, either your own, someone else's or death in general?’ in the past 2 weeks. Death data were obtained from the municipal resident registration file. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to examine associations.ResultsDuring the follow-up period (2000–2008), there were 672 deaths. In a model adjusted for baseline covariates, GTOD were significantly associated with all-cause mortality (hazards ratio 1.66, 95% confidence interval 1.20–2.29). Stratified analyses showed an association between GTOD and mortality in men, older subjects (⩾70 years), married individuals and those with higher social support.ConclusionsGTOD are associated with an increased mortality risk among older citizens in Japan. Research is now needed to determine the factors underlying this association and assess the clinical relevance of screening for GTOD in older individuals.

During the ten years from 1947 to 1956, typhoons with a maximum velocity of more than 34 knots have attacked Japan at an average of 26.8 times a year, inflicting damages amounting to 240 thousand million yen on the average each year (1946-1955) . However, depending on the course and scale of the typhoon and the season of the year, except for damages to vessels, in some cases, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages as the abundant ram fall resulting from a typhoon is beneficial to agriculture and hydraulic power generation widely developed throughout the country. In the past, damages from typhoons consisted of storm and flood disasters with the flooding of inland waterways and landslides in mountainous districts due to heavy precipitation. However, lately, with the rapid progress of modern industries, cities with ports and harbors are expanding with the development of large industrial zones along coastal areas where raw materials can be obtained from foreign countries at low cost of transportation, and vast areas of land for the establishment of industrial plants can be acquired without encountering serious obstacles through land reclamation along the shores. These circumstances have called for the necessity of protecting the coastal areas from the direct attack of high tides and wind waves generated by typhoon.

Abstract:
AbstractThe new mineral, vanadoallanite-(La), found in the stratiform ferromanganese deposit from the Shobu area, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, Japan, was studied using electron microprobe analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Vanadoallanite-(La) is a rare-earth element-rich monoclinic epidote-supergroup mineral with simplified formula CaLaV3+AlFe2+(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH) (Z = 2, space group P21/m) characterized by predominantly V3+ at one of three octahedral sites, M1. The crystal studied shows large V (∼8.4 V2O3 wt.%), Fe (∼13.8 Fe2O3 wt.%; Fe2+/total Fe = 0.58) and Mn (∼8.8 MnO wt.%) contents. A small amount of Ti is also present (∼1.3 TiO2 wt.%). Structural refinement converged to R1 = 2.96%. The unit-cell parameters are a = 8.8985(2), b = 5.7650(1), c = 10.1185(2) Å, β = 114.120(1)° and V = 473.76(2) Å3. The cation distributions determined at A1,A2 and M3 are Ca0.61Mn0.39, (La0.46Ce0.14Pr0.07Nd0.18)Σ0.85Ca0.15 and Fe2+0.56Mn2+0.30Mg0.06V3+0.05Fe3+0.03, respectively. On the other hand, depending on Ti assignment, two different schemes of the cation distribution at M1 and M2 can be considered: (1) M1(V3+0.58Fe3+0.34Ti4+0.08) M2(Al0.92Fe3+0.08), and (2) M1(V3+0.58Fe3+0.42)M2(Al0.92Ti4+0.08). In both cases, the dominant cations at A1, A2, M1, M2 and M3 are Ca, La, V3+, Al and Fe2+ , respectively. According to ionic radius, Ti4+ possibly prefers M2 rather than Fe3+. A large Mn2+ content at A1 also characterizes our vanadoallanite-(La). The structural change of Mn2+-rich allanite-group minerals is considered to be controlled by two main factors. One is the large Mn2+ content at A1 in vanadoallanite-(La), which modifies the topology of the A1O9 polyhedron. The other is the expansion of M3O6 and M1O6 octahedra caused by large octahedral cations, such as Fe2+ and Mn2+, at M3 and the trivalent transition elements, V3+ and Fe3+, at M1.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Although high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and non-HDL cholesterol have opposite associations with coronary heart disease, multi-country reports of lipid trends only use total cholesterol (TC). Our aim was to compare trends in total, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol and the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio in Asian and Western countries. Methods We pooled 458 population-based studies with 82.1 million participants in 23 Asian and Western countries. We estimated changes in mean total, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol and mean total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio by country, sex and age group. Results Since ∼1980, mean TC increased in Asian countries. In Japan and South Korea, the TC rise was due to rising HDL cholesterol, which increased by up to 0.17 mmol/L per decade in Japanese women; in China, it was due to rising non-HDL cholesterol. TC declined in Western countries, except in Polish men. The decline was largest in Finland and Norway, at ∼0.4 mmol/L per decade. The decline in TC in most Western countries was the net effect of an increase in HDL cholesterol and a decline in non-HDL cholesterol, with the HDL cholesterol increase largest in New Zealand and Switzerland. Mean total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio declined in Japan, South Korea and most Western countries, by as much as ∼0.7 per decade in Swiss men (equivalent to ∼26% decline in coronary heart disease risk per decade). The ratio increased in China. Conclusions HDL cholesterol has risen and the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio has declined in many Western countries, Japan and South Korea, with only a weak correlation with changes in TC or non-HDL cholesterol.

AbstractInclusions affect the behavior of ice, and their characteristics help us understand the formation history of the ice. Recently, a low-temperature magnesium sulfate salt was discovered. This paper describes this naturally occurring MgSO4·11H2O mineral, meridianiite, derived from salt inclusions in sea ice of Lake Saroma, Japan and in Antarctic continental core ice. Its occurrence is confirmed by using micro-Raman spectroscopy to compare Raman spectra of synthetic MgSO4·11H2O with those of the inclusions.
