Ice pigging is an innovative pipe cleaning and product recovery method, patented at the University of Bristol. An ice pig is formed from an ice slurry, which is a two phase mixture of ice crystals suspended in an aqueous solution, most commonly brine. The process involves the flow of ice slurry through a pipe network, driven by a positive pressure differential. The process is capable of effectively removing fouling from internal pipe walls, and recovering product that would otherwise be wasted, in situations where conventional pigging is impossible or impractical. Ice pigging is becoming the w

The interdependency of food, water, and energy leads to a need for more water efficient and energy effective ways to produce food. Abstract:
Personnel working in industry can encounter hot and humid conditions where uncompensable heat loads are experienced; an inability to dissipate stored heat increases the risk of developing a heat illness. In order to minimise the incidence of heat illnesses, several heat stress reduction interventions have been developed which aim to allow for safe repeated bouts of exposure to high thermal heat loads. These vary from modification of the working environment, wearing of personal protective equipment designed to cool, heat stress indices and/or hydration regimens. Despite these interventions, per

Personal cooling systems, worn by emergency first responders under protective clothing, are designed to minimise the risk of heat illness. This thesis reaffirms that first responder agencies (e.g. fire, police) identify heat illness as a genuine threat to worker safety. Further, it identifies that certain personal cooling systems alleviate the heat better than others, and the combination of air temperature and humidity has a direct effect on their performance. Therefore, the use of cooling systems, by first responder agencies, needs to be considered in the context of the protective clothing be
