Basketball, a popular game that practically everyone has played, presents an excellent mean of teaching elementary probability concepts and percents using a computer simulation. In particular, a free-throw shooting contest can be simulated quite easily with a BASIC program. Program 1 replicates the free-throw accuracy of the great stars of college and professional basketball. Program 2 allows the student actually to compete with such stars as Earvin (Magic) Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Isaiah Thomas.

Abstract The author assesses the effectiveness of Thomas Schreiner’s exegesis of Revelation 20 in his recent technical Revelation commentary (Baker Academic, 2023). Schreiner boldly takes up the new creation millennialism interpretative solution, following J. Webb Mealy’s monographs After the Thousand Years and New Creation Millennialism, but he resists perhaps the most significant potential consequence of that model, namely, that John’s picture of the final fate of the stubbornly unrepentant is to be imagined as annihilation in a temporary pool (Gr. λίμνη) of fire, and not, as commonly unders

The few known African American photographers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries faced significant challenges, including racial prejudice and competition from white photographers for both white and the relatively few Black customers. The New Jersey photographers examined here were no exception and this may help explain why images by an artist with a long career, William M. Dutton, are so hard to find today and why others, like Isaiah Burton and Levi Bankson, worked only briefly in the medium before moving on to other, more remunerative occupations. My intention in this essay is to open up a question I cannot fully resolve: the relationship between democracy and value pluralism. By “value pluralism” I mean the view propounded so memorably by the late Isaiah Berlin and developed in various ways by thinkers including Stuart Hampshire, Steven Lukes, Thomas Nagel, Martha Nussbaum, Michael Stocker, Bernard Williams, Charles Taylor, John Kekes, and John Gray, among others. I shall define and discuss this view in some detail in Section III. For now, suffice it to say that value pluralism is the view that what we (rightly) value in our lives turn

Abstract Thus far, the topic of early Christian prayer to the Holy Spirit has not received much scholarly attention. Only a few studies are available that present relevant primary sources (Tertullian, De baptismo 8; Origen, Hom. Lev. I 1; Acts of John 94 and 96; Acts of Thomas 27 and 50; Phōs Hilaron). This article discusses four documents from ancient Egypt that are absent from these studies. The apocryphal writing The Ascension of Isaiah (5:14) is a witness to second-century early Christian (and perhaps also first-century Jewish) prayer to the Holy Spirit. The freedom, in Latin libertas, is the object of philosophical reflection since Plato. Yet as the determined philosophical direction it took the form of the „liberalism” on the turning point of the sixteenth and seventeenth century, represented by two philosophers: Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778). Among contemporary scholars Isaiah Berlin is standing out. From his point of view the philosophical problem of the freedom should be examined in two aspects: the negative freedom i.e. the attribute of not hindered freedom in making choices and the positive freedom as o

We recently tested a novel combination therapy in patients with mCRPC who had progressed on androgen receptor (AR)-targeted therapies, targeting PD-L1 and PARP1 with durvalumab and olaparib, respectively. While a subset of patients exhibited partial responses, most patients experienced disease progression within a year. Abstract Human cancer tissues are known to release their own DNA into body fluids such as plasma. These DNA molecules derived from tumors, collectively known as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), contain genetic information about disease progression at the time of sampling. Importantly, ctDNA has recently been utilized for capturing the whole-body disease profile and when sampled at various time points over the treatment, can inform the dynamic of clonal heterogeneity and its contribution to therapy failures. Abstract The phrase “just price” first appears in Aquinas's Commentary on the Book of Isaiah (1252). Interestingly, even in this early work Aquinas introduces the notion of price to comment on a verse, a term which had in fact disappeared with the Vulgate Latin translation, on which Aquinas relied, and which does not appear in the Fathers’ commentaries. Aquinas here provides the founding elements of his later analyses: the role of the price in ensuring the justice of exchange but also the diversity of possible exchange ratios, not necessarily referring to price, in order to account for limit c
