Tieszen, Charles Lowell. "The boundaries of religion : strategies for Christian identity in light of Islam in medieval Spain." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2010. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/853/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study argues that the use of reflected self-image as a tool for interpreting Christian anti-Muslim polemic allows such texts to be read for the self-image of their authors instead of the image of just those they attacked. This self-image is further described as the author’s assertion of Christian identity in light of Islam. As such, polemic becomes a set of boundaries authors offered to their communities, helping them to successfully navigate inter-religious living. Using this interpretive tool, two sets of medieval anti-Muslim polemic from Spain – four treatises from the third/ninth cent

Abstract:
Medieval Iberian literary tradition constitutes a vast corpus of writings with which to study interfaith relations – in particular, Christian attitudes towards Muslims. This thesis focuses on works produced in the thirteenth century under king Alfonso X of Castile-Leon. Scholars have often looked to Alfonso X's poetry and legal texts to explore Christian responses to Islam, at a pivotal moment of Christian domination in the Peninsula. The thesis looks to Alfonso's historiography (the Estoria de España), which has received much less attention from scholars of interfaith relations. This study e

Abstract:
Given the limitations posed on some religious practices in secular contexts, a trend of individualization, or a self-fashioned approach to religious practices, has surfaced in an emerging debate in literature dealing with the study of Muslim minorities and their practices. While the term is used for critical arguments, it lacks empirical data, which this research aimed to contribute to by using in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The study starts by mapping the basic elements of a “theory of individualization,” and analyzing the literature behind it. Following it, interviews are conduc

The Muslims of Granada were subsequently given the choice of expulsion or conversion, with many choosing to remain and convert to Catholicism. Beginning with these initial conversions, the question of Morisco Muslim-ness is one that has historians for years. Abstract:
The current work is an intellectual history of how blood permeated early modern Spaniards' conceptions of morality and purity. This paper examines Spanish intellectuals' references to blood in their medical, theological, demonological, and historical works. Through these excerpts, this thesis demonstrates how this language of blood played a role in buttressing the church's conception of good morals. This, in turn, will show that blood was used as a way to persecute Jews and Muslims, and ultimately define the early modern Spanish identity.

Visigothic Hispania, Islamicate al-Andalus and Christian Spain are names representing three scriptural monotheistic civilizations in Iberia. Al-Andalus has stood apart from this list by representing a time and a place of convivencia in which Christians, Jews and Muslims cooperated and coexisted. Why and how the Islamicate civilization in al-Andalus differed from the Visigoths or the Spanish, despite all three sharing a religious orientation is an historical puzzle. Because of the extremely low dispersal capacity, mygalomorph spiders usually show high levels of local endemism and deep population genetic structure, however, closely related species tend to be morphologically conservative.
