Islamic theoantroposentric phenomena that exist in the mass media space or called mass media religiosity. This form of religiosity is in the form of morals which is sourced from the revelation of Allah contained in the Qur’an and hadith. While the mass media itself is in the form of human knowledge such as print media, electronics and new media. The existence of integration between mass media and religion is complementary and become a unified whole. The use of mass media must be accompanied by the morals or ethics of the mass media. Abstract:
Kata Kunci:Dakwah Islam, Komodifikasi, Media Massa, Studi Pustaka Abstract: Islam basically is not a religion contained with textual symbols in the Koran and the Hadith only. Islam actually is a religion what cannot deny by historical, social, cultural, political, and so on. The number of adherents of Islam is never calculated as a small, because Islam is spreaded in various parts of the world, including Indonesia, Islam has become a kind of "market phenomenon". As a consequence of ''symptoms of market'', Islam also undergoes a commodification process. Da'wah as part of religious teachings also cannot avoid by commodification, especially since the birth of various information media, including mass media. The number of da'wah programs on the mass media is the one hand adds to the transformation of Islamic values, but on the other hand it sometimes damages the image of Islam, because da'wah as a sacred part of religious toughts. Which sometimes becomes a tool for the media to achieve the majority of Indonesia's population was a Muslim. This research seeks the traces of commodification, as well as its encroachment on the religious space and the practice of da'wah, until finally trying to find common ground between commodification and da'wah it self. Keywords:Islamic Da’wah, Commodification, Mass Media, Library Study

Abstract:
This paper investigates the purpose of society's construction of ‘others’ through the gaze of the mass media. During times of crisis, the paper argues, Western mass media are faced with an irreconcilable paradox: the simultaneous demand for, and denial of, a fear-inspiring other (the Soviet Union, Al Qaeda, etc.) This paradigm of otherness was overcome in the period post-Cold War and pre-9/11 as the US media was able to demonise ‘others’ at home — the war on drugs, for example. The question this paper will address, then, is: what are the motives driving the US mass media towards an other constructed along lines similar to the Soviet-era other? Who is to ‘blame’ for this phenomenon — the media, or the society in which these media operate?

Western mass media is considered unfair and subjective in delivering news. Instead previous studies show that those western mass media have unfairly broadcasted news related Muslim people, limited studies have been carried out to show how those media broadcast the news and who control those media. This study, therefore, tries to understand how western media broadcast news related Muslim people and who control those media. This study employed content analysis in which the data was gathered from online sources and scholar journals. The findings show that western media use some strategies in broadcasting news such as making early claims during broadcasting, present false report and negative image, and use unproper language. The conclusion is that unfair news broadcasting related Muslim countries could be happened due to Jews domination in western mass media ownership and management. The limitation of this studi is that the data was merely gathered from online sources. Future research need to be carried out within broader context by involving journalists and communities.

Abstract:
The development of the convergent communication technology is not only limited to technology, but has penetrated and changed the basic patterns of human life. As a process structure and artifact, technology is an imperactive feature of future community development. Mass media is an effective means that can reach the masses in a large and widespread universality of reach. Mass media has an important role in society and is considered to have excess that can influence human mind in order to change their lifestyle. This paper tries to explain the phenomenon of convergence media that forces conventional media to enter the internet network (online). The research methods are qualitative and descriptive by applying library study and emperical data. This study discussed the digitalization of freedom in democracy in the mass media. There are 4 (four) aspects that influence the shifting of religious behavior community as a result of mass media freedom, in economic, social, cultural, and political life. The results of the study reveal conventional media shifting to online media give positive and negative impacts to its users. Moral decline in community, the economic life that puts too much emphasis on material fulfillment efforts, has caused people to become consumptive. Culture has caused the changes in the way of nation's life and losing of political values that based on family spirit, consensus, and mutual cooperation. In the view of Islam, mass media is a mass communication media that functions in creating a public opinion. The forming of public opinion is something that cannot be underestimated in the Islamic system. Mass media has a function to build a solid religious community and strengthen the values of nation and state life.

The release of trailer of ‘Innocence of Muslims’ generated a huge debate on free speech, hate speech and the representation of the Muslims and Islam in the Western media. This paper investigates these issues in detail by taking instances from the mainstream US print media. Some other interesting debates in the mass media like the identification of the filmmaker and denigration of the Muslims and Islam in historical context have also been undertaken in the paper. Discourse theory and social construction of reality by Schutz (1976) and Berger and Luckmann (1991) have been applied as theoretical framework to evaluate the relationship between mass media and social construction of reality, and to see as how the US mass media constructed the reality about the movie (trailer). Three major aspects were selected for analysis; viz., filmmaker(s) and their associates, issues concerning freedom of speech and expression, and the representation of the Muslims’ protesting against the YouTube clip and the ensuing violence in some Muslim countries.

Abstract:
AbstractThe emergence of Islamic television in the Arab Middle East is usually explained as part of a Saudi media empire fueled by neoliberal petro-dollars. This article, by contrast, takes seriously the role ideas played alongside changing political economies in the origins of the world’s first Islamic television channel, Iqraa. Focusing on the intellectual and institutional career of “Islamic media” (al-i’lām al-Islāmī) as a category from the late sixties onwards in Egypt, I argue that Islamic television is part of a broader decolonization struggle involving the modern discipline of mass communication. Pioneering Arab communication scholars mounted a quest for epistemic emancipation in which the question of how to mediate Islam became inextricable from the question of what made media Islamic. Drawing on historical and ethnographic research, I show how the idea of Islamic media involved a radical reconceptualization of the Qur'an as mass communication from God and of Islam as a mediatic religion. This positing of an intimate affinity between Islam and media provoked secular skepticism and religious criticism that continue to this day. I conclude by reflecting on how the intellectual history of Islamic media challenges dominant framings of epistemological decolonization as a question of interrogating oppressive universalisms in favor of liberatory pluralisms.

Abstract: This article aims to analyze the raft of Dakwah Syariah Radio (RDS FM) as one of the radio stations of Islamic radical movement in Solo, on mobilizing for the 'Bela Islam' actions both in Solo and Jakarta from Islamic Populism perspective. Vedi Hadiz defines Islamic populism as an asymmetrical social class movement, even with class interests that may be antagonistic and different levels of using Islam as a shared identity. To that end, the populist Islamic movement becomes a fairly recent phenomenon in which various Islamic organizations even from different platforms such as FPI, HTI, and MMI can move in a momentum. This article will examine how the RDS FM in its broadcast to mobilize participation in the anti-Ahok rally by looking at the broadcast, website, social media and brochure papers. By using qualitative method, this article try to analyze the data by deep interviewing the radio’s staffs and anchor, also the radio’s broadcast on air, on line, or by website and social media. This article argues that radicalization in a macro level such as economic and political repression, can provoke radical Muslim euphoria to the local and global history of Islamist movements by using the rhetoric of religion and the enforcement of Islamic Shari'ah to fight 'the kafir', as well as opposing the leadership of Basuki T. Purnama which is non-Muslim. There is an ongoing debate in Kazakhstani mass media over what constitutes proper Islamic belief and conduct. This paper examines a running dispute between Zikiriya Zhandarbek, an intellectual based at a university in southern Kazakhstan, and scripturalist Islamic institutions, such as the Kazakhstani Muftiate and the Islamic television channel Asyl Arna. In his tirades against “Salafist” and “untraditional” members of the Muftiate and Asyl Arna, Zhandarbek uses rhetoric inviting identification with domestic traditions and Akhmed Yasawi, a local Sufi saint. Conversely, scripturalists’ rhetoric identifies them as scholars working to revive knowledge of the Qur’an and Islam. However, both parties claim to represent the Kazakh nation, showing the overwhelming importance of nationalist rhetoric in Kazakhstan today.

Abstract:
This article deals with how daily newspapers of Indonesia frame reality of the collective action of Muslims. That action becomes a magnet for national and international mass media because involving a large number of Muslim, and has a problem complexity (legal, politic, religion) and political interests (contestation for Jakarta governor). The media gets involved in that complexity because they are harnessed as a political instrument, by conducting framing. This study aims to find daily newspaper frame by analyzing the content qualitativly. Those newspapers are Kompas, Republika, Suara pembaruan, and Media Indonesia during November 2016. By analyzing their editorials, we find that their frames regarding Muslim collective action are different to each other. Even, frames of Republika and Suara Pembaruan are contested. Republika regards the Muslim action as a respond to get justice and basic right because of their religion blasphemy. Republika considers it as a legal issue. Suara Pembaruan views the Muslim action as a political issue (governor election of DKI Jakarta), which makes use of religion issue. Media Indonesia sees the action as a political issue as well. Kompas regards it as political and religion issue. We conclude that although expected to be impartial –as part of democratic values, mass media keep in-partiality in crucial issues e.g., religion. This study gives our understanding that mass media can be partial in the certain contexts.

Abstract:
On the verge of the twenty-first century, the world witnesses anunprecedented instability. Wars and culture conflicts widen the gapbetween the various civilizations and sow the seeds of hatred betweenindividuals. Islam, with its universal precepts of peace and respect for thedignity of humanity, was and still is the most misunderstood religion. When represented in the West, it is always associated with negativeimages that repel Westerners from seeing what Islam really is. Hence thegreat necessity for a peaceful and enlightened dialogue between theworld of Islam and the West.A great deal has been said and written on the subject of Islam andthe West and many conferences have been convened, yet no discernibleprogress has been made in bringing a better understanding or dampeningthe assault on Islam and the Muslims in the western media. PrinceCharles noted in his lecture at Oxford:The depressing fact is that, despite the advances in technologyand mass communications of the second half of the twentiethcentury, despite mass travel, the intermingling of races, the evergrowingreduction- or so we believe- of the mysteries of ourworld, misunderstandings between Islam and the West continue.Indeed, they may be growing. The misrepresentation of Islam, which was limited in the past tothe printed word, has now mushroomed to all forms of mass communication. The entertainment industry, news telecasts, radio shows, themovie industry, children’s television programs, and even commercialson billboards all have become vehicles for propagating the misrepresentationof Islam in the West. Literary fiction and nonfiction remainamong the most insidious vehicles for permanently damaging theimage and concept of Islam in the minds of non-Muslim readers ...

Abstract:
This study aims to describe the contestation of Islamic Nusantara rhetoric in Social Media between two Islamic organizations in Indonesia. The first mass organization was NU as the creator of Islam Nusantara idea and HTI as the repudiation of Islam Nusantara idea. To obtain the description, the researchers used the theory of Gramsi to analyze the text contained in the official web of NU and HTI on Islam Nusantara. The results show that there is contestation between NU and HTI in producing Islamic Nusantara rhetoric in New Media. NU as the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia feels the need to develop the Islamic Nusantara model as a distinctive feature of Islam in Indonesia against the hegemony of radical Islamic values entering Indonesia. The intellectual elite of NU is also widely revealed in its text on the official web of NU, that radical Islamic values are also carried by other Islamic organizations such as HTI which is the international Islamic organization of the Middle East. Meanwhile, HTI elites also produce texts to reject Islam Nusantara because Islam is only one, and invites the Islamic community of Indonesia not to be divided.

However, this new type of journalist is considered as not professional as mainstream journalists. This phenomenon is also happened in islamic online media, which the subject of this communication could be an institution, or either individuals. These subjects are often violating journalism rule and ethics on the internet. The ideology of this writer and institution could be expressed on a discriminative and unfair journalism product. Abstract:
In Muslim-majority Indonesia religious conversion to Islam among celebrities always makes it a piece of good news. Infotainment programs of most TV channels broadcast it as their prime news. However, the opposite direction, namely the religious conversion out of Islam to other religions, is hardly possible to broadcast in conventional media such as TV, newspaper, radio, etc. It is a very sensitive issue, which could cause a mass outcry. Yet, such a phenomenon is easily found in a new media platform, such as YouTube. This paper explores the netizens’ responses to religious conversion out of Islam to Christianity among Indonesian celebrities. By scrutinizing this phenomenon, this paper aims to show to what extent new media provides a space for the religious minorities to speak for themselves. By closely reading their comments, this paper finds that in new media being a religious minority does not matter to represent themselves.

<span class="fontstyle0">The purpose of this research was to see the framing of the news about the dissolution of the mass organization of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) by mediaindonesia.com and kompas.com. This research used a qualitative approach and framing analysis method with the Zhongdang Pan &amp; Kosicki model. There were four (4) framing tools used to analyze,<br />namely (1) Syntax, (2) Script, (3) Thematic, (4) Rhetorical. The research objects were five (5) news of the disbandment of FPI on mediaindonesia.com and three (3) news of that on kompas.com. Data analysis was carried out by analyzing news based on semantic, script, thematic and rhetorical structures. The results showed that mediaindonesia.com constructed the disbandment of the FPI mass organization as an appropriate government step, based on legal grounds, not making it up and there was no element of sentiment towards FPI because the decision had referred to the right legal basis. The framing of the disbandment of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) community organization on mediaindonesia.com supported the government by providing government sources and quotations from sources who supported the government. Meanwhile, Kompas.com was more supportive of the community with sources from within the community and quotations from sources who supported the community. Abstract:
This article wants to examine how the media ideology about the concept of radicalism in Islam in the mass media of Republika and Koran Tempo. The Republika newspaper supports and agrees to the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) both with an understanding of the prohibition of homosexuality and the appointment of news of FPI's violence against homosexuals. The Tempo newspaper is more about renewing ideas such as reporting on the views of the Liberal Islam Network (JIL) in respect of homosexuals. Homosexuality is the same sex lover or the choice of sexuality abnormalities is normal as a human being, it does not need to be criticized but must be respected as individual freedom. There is a fundamental ideological difference between Republika and Koran Tempo by renewing the concept of homosexuality with thinking radicalism on the basis of Islamic teachings. The homosexual issue, FPI applies the meaning of Islamic radicalism from the right-wing side which promotes violence as resistance, while JIL applies the meaning of radicalism from the left-wing side which prioritizes the radicalism of thought and law in the Koran.

The mass media was used as an advocacy and struggle tool in the early 20th century in the Dutch East Indies colony. One figure at that time was Haji Misbach (1876-1926) who used the Medan Moeslimin and Islam Bergerak media to convey thoughts, advocate citizens, to attack political opponents. What is known from Misbach is that he is an Islamic figure with the title of hajj, but he is one of the communist figures. He combines Islam and communism. The communication style used by Misbach, according to Stuart Hall's theory, is a low context that is the direct delivery of the target or purpose of communication.Whereas the Indies community at that time and Asia in general used a high context communication style that was full of ado, not directly to the problem.

Abstract:
The one of anxieties facing Muslims is about acts of violence in the name of Islam. Qur'an has mentioned that the Prophet was sent on earth as a mercy (rahmah) to the universe, and then the “rahmah” in question is to be implemented as such? Indonesia as a country with the largest Muslim population in the world is famous for Islam that is able to merge with the diversity of race, religion and culture. One of the things that influenced one of them is the existence of the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia NU and Muhammadiyah who always try to show Islam wasathiyah and rahmah. The existence of NU and Muahammadiyah is believed to be a great support to the peace of Indonesia with all its diversity. This paper is intended to further explore the concept of wasathiyah NU and Muhammadiyah in an effort to realize a peaceful Islam in Indonesia. The research method used is literature research using resources such as books, journal articles and mass media to analyze the concept of Islamic organization NU and Muhammadiyah. The results show that NU and Muhammadiyah carry the same concept to show the peaceful face of Islam that can unite with the differences. This is evidenced by the concept brought by each of both Islam Nusantara and Islam berkemajuan.

Understanding about religious splinter groups in Indonesian context is mainly identified through their theological difference from that of muslims majority. Their theological beliefs and practices are considered deviant from the majority’s “true” theology and practices. It at least can be concluded from the fatwa of MUI which then become formal reference to most muslims people in Indonesia. Though the fatwa face many critiques from some muslims groups, especially liberal muslims activists, but it remain assumed as truth by the majority of Indonesian muslims. There are many factors supporting the emergence of splinter groups in Indonesia. Beside the existence of some “advocates” such as liberal muslims activists and mass media, lack of law enforcement and the failure of religious leaders to educate their people to be more anticipative to the emergence of splinter groups. It is necessary to initiate open dialogues with followers of splinter groups, especially their leaders.

Such violence also occurs in Muslim states, including Indonesia. Surprisingly there is also violence against women committed on the basis of their biological realities, namely monthly period. Abstract:
The great Islamic mass rally which well known as “Aksi Bela Islam (Defending Islam action) 212” in Indonesia has always been claimed as the triumph of Islamic activism. This action continue to be voiced through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so forth with the jargon “ 212 spirit “. The voluminous actions of “Aksi Bela Islam 212” sound like an authoritative propaganda jargon which are exhaled to spread the Islamic identity through the internet. Along with the proliferation of online Islamic activism, some major questions emerge about: (1) whether online religious discourse is an authoritative source that gives Muslim society an authority in religious propaganda; (2) to what extent the proliferation of online Islamic activism has shaped the new Islamic propaganda authority? The objective of this article is to examine the discourse of Islamic activism in the online public sphere which makes the internet and online social media as a new vehicle in the transformation of traditional-modern Islamic propaganda authority for technologically literate generation. The article highlights some transformations of traditional religious propaganda authority to the new one which appropriated with the technological advancement. Using political sociology approach, this article will maps an Islamic online activism, which is termed as Islamic clicktivism, and its relation to the religious propaganda authority. The finding of this article reveals that Islamic clicktivism can be an authoritative method in shaping religious and political discourses. Finally, this article argues that Islamic social movement in the millennial age – especially in the post 212 movement – has consistency to play a role in political contestation through the Islamic clicktivism. Kedua, sejauh mana proliferasi aktivisme Islam daring membentuk otoritas propaganda keagamaan baru? Abstract:
I. INDEPENDENT NEWS AGENCIESFour major international news agencies-Associated Press, Reuters, UnitedPress and Agence France Presse-gather and distribute much if not most ofthe international news (be it “hard,” breaking news or “soft” news features)published and broadcast in the world? They transmit in English and French as well as a number of commerciallysignificant and logistically easy regional languages. (A.P. transmits a dailyservice in English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Swedish and offers anArabic features service by mail. Reuters and AFP offer a daily news file inArabic.) Most of this news is now transmitted point-to-point either by landline, microwave link, satellite or some combination of these methods which havelargely replaced radio wireless transmission over the past ten years. The newtechnology is much more effective; much less subject to failure and climaticinterference but much more expensive. Point-to-point telex is also sometimesused as a fall back position where radio wireless transmission is still in use.The Associated Press, as an example, has 8,500 subscribers in 150 countriesoutside of the United States for its World Service. But the extent thatBig Four news dominates international news is much greater than the numberof subscribers would indicate, since many national news agencies subscribeto one or more of the Big Four services and then edit and re-transmit thematerial as part of their own news service to hundreds or even thousands oflocal news outlets; e. g. Tass-which subscribes to the Associated Pressservice-has approximately 6,000 subscribers in the Soviet Union. As the number of full-time foreign correspondents for newspapers continuesto decline due to increasing costs and as mass media has proliferatedthroughout the Third World over the past few decades, the Big Four and othernews agencies have expanded in size ...

Abstract:
This paper explores the influence of religion in cultural hybridization processes linked to migratory experience, taking into account the study of mass media consumption. Our research focused on the analysis of Muslim women from northern Africa living in Catalonia (Spain) over a 5-year period. The final sample was composed of 25 women, from Morocco (22), Tunisia (2) and Algeria (1).The main conclusions of our qualitative research are that the influence of Islam is much more evident as culture than as dogma and, in line with this, the presence of segregationist media consumption is minimal (in 4 of the 25 interviewed). Internet and television consumption is dominant, but there is a significant generation gap. Whereas internet consumption is mostly among the young, television is more present among women over the age of 36. With regards to internet content, there is serious concern about the presence of religious leaders who, under the guise of a modern appearance, spread a vision of Islam in fundamentalist terms. Much of the sample interviewed fears its power of influence. In digital social networks, Muslim women tend to share religious information, but, for safety reasons, they do so within closed groups.

The rise of change and the behavior of society today change the distortion or differences in factors, news, and issues those are freely scattered in the mass media are no longer heard by the Indonesian people, so it becomes the people's consumption that is swallowed raw so that it starts to fix it. When people take news and information about and direct then many questions arise, it is appropriate, but the problem is all the news that comes from the mass media used to criticize and disbelieve others, this causes a variety of differences that result in the decline of humans to be able to support each other and make a difference as a mercy for all nature. All kinds of actions that cause conflict and friction between human beings are triggered by negative ideological reasoning that challenges its truth. Because reason and ideology that are formed do not show a more wise view and behavior in responding to differences. Therefore, the author wants to discuss more deeply about ethical knowledge and scientific knowledge of scientific ethics capable of realizing a tolerant attitude and understanding perspective. Of course, this author uses the Content Analysis method as the main reference in examining the views of Taha Jabir al-Alwani about attitudes and actions relating to science using interpretive-descriptive methods. Abstract:
This study aims to describe the view of mass media with the Islamic ideology of Republika in response to mass shooting incident by Stephen Craig Paddock (64 years) in Las Vegas United States on Sunday (1/10/2017) which killed 59 people and injured 500 people. This research uses qualitative method with framing analysis of Robert Entman model which produces four important things. First, the editorial (header) entitled "Irony Paddock, Irony Trump" affirms the attitude of Republika who called the Las Vegas tragedy an act of terror. Secondly, Republika constructed the United States president Donald Trump as a problem because of judging Paddock's brutal action as a casual shoot, not including terrorists. Thirdly, Republika rejects the double standard of Western countries, especially the US which does not mention terrorist acts because the perpetrators are not Muslim and not black. Fourthly, Republika offers a definition of terrorism as an act involving the use or attempts of sabotage, coercion, or violence that result in the death of the population in general. This research can be used as a discourse forming critical awareness in opposing the negative views of US superpower leaders who often impose the meaning of acts of terrorism with Islam and the Muslims.

Abstract:
Pengasuh magazine is one of magazines which plays an important role in spreading information, knowledge and as a medium of reforms movement among Malay society since its birth in 1918 as was published by Kelantan Islamic Religious Council. One of Pengasuh upsides is its ability to sustain until today compared to its other concurrent mass media before long discarded. Looking at the significance and role Pengasuh has undertaken, this article intends to revisit the question of caliphate that was raised in Pengasuh in the year 1924. The discussion of the caliphate issue coincides with the incident of the caliphate dissolved by Mustafa Kemal in Turkey. The dissolution is an important incident for the Muslim ummah as it ends a kind of Islamic ruling system inherited since the Righteous Caliphate era.
