Abstract:
State Islamic University libraries are striving to become research libraries. Since humanities are the core discipline in most State Islamic Universities, a new service concept—digital humanities—has been introduced to support research activities. This study explores the implementation of digital humanities in three State Islamic University libraries: UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. This research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that while the libraries have sufficient librarians, their involvement in research activities is not extensive or proactive. Additionally, the facilities and infrastructure necessary to support digital humanities are inadequate. Although policies supporting digital humanities exist, there is a lack of strategic programs to explore and fully enhance library use and involvement in research. Furthermore, internal cooperation between institutions has been established but remains limited, indicating a need for libraries to adopt a more proactive role. These insights underscore the challenges and opportunities in implementing digital humanities within State Islamic University libraries, providing a foundation for future strategic initiatives to enhance their research support capabilities.

Abstract:
Introduction. This study aims to examine the Islamic collection development process conducted by 4 (four) Islamic universities’ libraries in East Java, including selection criteria and tools, the use of the collection, and challenges faced by the librarian Data Collection Method. Using a mixed-methods approach with surveys and interviews, four head of libraries and 338 students participated in this research. Analysis Data. Data from the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis method while the qualitative data from interviews were analyzed using the thematic analysis technique. Results and Discussions. The results showed that the libraries did not have any written collection development policies. The four libraries have used the right selection tools, but most of them have not utilized reviews of books based on online sources and social media. At present, the four libraries have not had any special subjects which potentially emerged as a distinction of the libraries’ collection. Nevertheless, there has been a plan to develop such a special subject of Islamic collection. The use of Islamic literature collections among students were considered in medium level of use. The challenges in developing Islamic literature collections are sourced both from internal and external sources. Internally, the library has not evaluated their collection development policies. While the low participation of lecturers in the development of library collections emerged as obstacles from external sources. Conclusions. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the libraries involved in this study still needs improvements in some areas.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Islamic Library in Cordoba was one of the leading libraries of its time, offering various fields of knowledge, including collections of Islamic and European history. This research aims to understand the development of scientific civilization which became a mecca of progress in Europe during the Second Umayyad Dynasty. This research methodology uses a library research approach with data collection through literature, documentation (both printed and electronic), as well as data and information sources relevant to the study. The findings in this study show that the development of science in Cordoba during the Second Umayyad Dynasty was driven by the construction of academies and libraries. The palace library in Cordoba, built by Caliph Abdurrahman, was one of the best libraries in the Islamic world at the time. It was staffed by a librarian called a "bakiya," and involved copyists and bookbinders. The glittering development of Islamic libraries during the Umayyad period had a great influence on the civilization of Arab society, making the Cordoba Library a center of advanced civilization in Europe. The existence of this library became the foundation for increasing knowledge and learning throughout the region, having a positive impact on civilization and culture at that time.

Abstract:
Since the formation of the Islamic society by Prophet Muhammad, mosque libraries fulfilled several important roles that deserve scholarly attention. Therefore, this article elicits the significance of these various roles within Muslim societies through Islamic history. Until present day, almost all mosque libraries provide a variety of collections, concerning both religious and non-religious issues, such as social science and education. In line with these roles, this paper presents different examples of mosque libraries that, through history, contributed significantly to the development of Islamic civilization, like the library of the al-Azhar mosque in Egypt, the Grand Mosque Library in Cordova, etc. In addition, several aspects determining the (in)significance of mosque libraries through history, such as library management and factors contributing to the stagnation of mosque libraries, are investigated.

Abstract:
The Libraries that have rich collections on Islam are facing the problems of knowledge organization while classifying materials on Islam. This is because the standard classification systems like Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Universal Decimal Classification, Bliss Classification, and Colon Classification, which are used by a huge number of libraries, have not provided with sufficient place and proper enumeration or hierarchy for Islamic knowledge. Subsequently, different alternative solutions have been sorted by scholars and opted by these libraries. These solutions include expansions made in standard clas-sification systems with different approaches and indigenous classification systems for Islam. Despite these solutions, the libraries had problems and were not satisfied. This study has addressed this problem, reviewing litera-ture on the problem and collecting empirical data from relevant libraries and scholars of Library and Information Science (LIS) from nine different countries of the world, using interviewing as data collection instrument. Findings of literature and empirical data confirmed the existence of prob-lem and dissatisfaction of libraries. Consequently, the optimal solution in-dicated in literature and by researched population has been brought for-ward in this research, i.e., development of an independent and comprehensive classification system for Islamic knowledge. This system has been got verified by the scholars of LIS and of Islamic Studies.

Jowkar, Abdolsrasool. "The education of teacher-librarians in the Islamic Republic of Iran : a competency approach." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1991. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7035.

Abstract:
Education has a vital role in the cultural and socio-economic development of a country and the success of an educational system depends partly on the information infrastructure of the society. The school library, as the first link in the hierarchical chain of the information infrastructure and an integral component of the school's instructional information system, supports the school's educational goals and objectives. The main key to the successful achievement of a school library programme is its librarian. At present, the majority of Iranian school libraries are run by teacher-librarians who rarely possess any formal library education. These librarians should be well equipped with the competencies needed to perform their jobs effectively. The intention of this survey is, therefore, to suggest a library programme for the education of teacher-librarians. Included is an overview of the educational system of Iran, the information infrastructure, situation of school libraries and different methods of curricular design, in order to define an appropriate approach to education for the purpose of planning a library programme for teacher-librarians in Iran. In examining library programmes, several standards and studies published in a range of developing and developed countries were analysed, and a data gathering instrument was constructed. This was administered and analysed to determine the competencies required of teacherlibrarians in Iran. The resulting competencies are compared to the competencies considered essential for school librarians in three comparative international surveys and the school librarian's job description, as provided by the Iranian Ministry of Education.

Abalkhali, Abdulwahab Mohammed. "Testing for differences between factors affecting job satisfaction measures of librarians at King Abdulaziz Public Library and Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University Library in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/284296.

Abstract:
The problem addressed in this study was to test for differences in job satisfaction of the librarians who were employed at two different library settings: King Abdulaziz Public Library (KAPL) and Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud University Library (IUL) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in perception of job satisfaction between the librarians in two types of libraries. Other purposes of this study were: (1) To determine if the differences are a factor of the variables that related to the librarians' personal situations, such as marital status, age, education, type of library, nature of work, length of years working at the present library, length of years in the profession, position level, salary, compensation, training, and job leaving. (2) To determine the degree of job satisfaction related to factors that influence the environment of the work at these libraries, such as supervision, staff development, social status, and pay. To measure the differences in job satisfaction among librarians in both libraries, the study utilized a questionnaire based on the work of Al-Salem. The population for this study is all the librarians working in the two libraries. Results were tabulated from the distribution of 105 questionnaires. There were sixty-eight (64%) completed and useable questionnaires for both libraries. Of the 55 questionnaires, 32 (58%) were returned from Al-Imam University Library. Of the 50 questionnaires sent to King Abdulaziz Public Library, 36 (72%) were returned. The data obtained from the participants were examined and analyzed by using the SAS program to run the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique. If the one way ANOVA test revealed a significant difference at the .05 level, the t-test was used to find the differences in the satisfaction of the various groups of employees. The results of the survey revealed that among the twelve independent variables that were involved in this study, only three had statistically significant effects at .05 level. These were type of library, annual salary, and job leaving. Regarding the type of library, the university librarians were more satisfied than the public librarians with regard to pay. The study showed that librarians who fall in the middle annual salary range were more satisfied than the other two annual salary ranges. With regard to job leaving, it was found that this variable had a significant effect on the dependent variable pay. While there was some evidence of job dissatisfaction, some suggestions and recommendations are drawn. First, the employees' salaries should be raised in both libraries to provide a better balance with Saudi living expenses. Second, opportunities for training and staff development should be available.

Abstract:
The Special Collections of the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham hold seven early Qur’ānic pieces on parchment and papyrus dating from the seventh century. Alphonse Mingana purchased them from the antiquarian dealer von Scherling in 1936. Through investigation of the private correspondence of Mingana and archival documents, this research provides new information about the origin and history of the fragments, whose reception has been influenced by the European cultural context at the beginning of the twentieth century, in contrast with the public image proposed in catalogues, official documents and previous studies. Furthermore, this research is an attempt to initiate an alternative perspective in analysing and editing the physical objects and texts of early Qur’ānic manuscripts by applying digital philology, thus using XML-encoded expressions to transcribe all of the richness of manuscripts in reconstructing the history of their transmission. This perspective interprets the process of the making of the manuscript text and the context in which the manuscript was written, thus editing its mobile and multi-layered text, differently from previous examples of the edition of early Qur’ānic manuscripts.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter I unravel human-centred understandings of digitisations working with the digitisation of a silver-alloy finger ring inscribed in Arabic Kufic writing with the words “il-la-lah” (“For/to Allah”) and re-theorise it through a novel ontological, new-materialisms, posthuman, ecological mode of thinking (Cameron, Fiona R. 2018. Posthuman Museum Practices. In The Posthuman Glossary, ed. Rosi Braidotti and Maria Hlavajova, 349–352. London / New York: Bloomsbury Academic; Cameron, Fiona R. 2019. Theorizing Digitisations in Global Computational Infrastructures. In The International Handbook of New Digital Practices in Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums and Heritage Sites, ed. Hannah Lewi, Wally Smith, Steve Cooke, and Dirk vom Lehn, 55–67. London: Routledge). The ring is significant as evidence of interactions between Viking and Islamic worlds and as an artefact directed to promoting intercultural respect during the Syrian refugee crisis and the rise of far-right anti-Muslim sentiments. Significantly, the ring digitisation also becomes planetary in reach and distribution as an unruly, more-than-digital ecological composition in which curatorial agency is refigured as radical, eco-systemic processes involving the action and vitality of many different coordinates in their unfolding (Cameron, Fiona R. 2021. The Future of Digital Data, Heritage and Curation in a More-Than-Human World. Abington: Routledge., 129).

Abstract:
Abstract Because of the sanctity of the revelation and the desire to record it faithfully, writing and books have always played an extraordinarily important role in the Islamic world. Islamic culture has spanned a millennium and a half, from the early seventh century to the present day, and exists around the globe from southern Spain and North Africa to Indonesia and beyond. Following a brief introduction to the principles of Arabic script, this chapter surveys this vast production in four broad chronological blocks: Qur’an manuscripts from the first centuries of Islam; the transition from parchment to paper in medieval times; deluxe books with illustrations produced from the late thirteenth century to the early seventeenth; and other forms and formats typical of more recent times including albums, loose-leaf Qur’an manuscripts from Africa, printing, and artists’ books. The purpose is to investigate books from the Islamic lands not only as written texts but also as physical objects that shed light on important social and intellectual questions such as the change from the oral to the written, rates of literacy, identification of readership, the roles of illustration and illumination, collecting, preservation, and libraries.

Abstract:
A manuscript is both a text that is, a written document of a certain literary genre, and a handwritten work, be it a codex or a scroll. A manuscript as a whole is endowed with an everlasting value, and as a result is kept in libraries and archives as well as museums. The relevance of a manuscript is proportionally dependent on its main features: origin, contents, structure, history, ownership, and state of preservation. Its importance is partially related to the fact that the manuscript is described as such in a list or catalogue. How to define and record a manuscript is still a difficult methodological question.

Abstract:
Before considering the work being done on Persian manuscripts and the places where they are kept, attention should first be focused upon two related topics. First, the place where the manuscripts were written. By looking at colophons where the place of origin is indicated, and in some cases, by assessing the style of the calligraphy, we discover that over a period of six or seven centuries, Persian manuscripts were written in all the lands where people either spoke Persian or were familiar With Persian literature. There are numerous Persian manuscripts which have been written in Arabic- speaking lands such as Syria, Iraq, and Egypt, and the European dominions of the Ottoman Empire, a number of which still remain in these countries. Moreover, the existence of Persian manuscripts in public libraries and private collections in India, Pakistan, and Turkey is an indication of the prevalence of the Persian language at the courts and at literary gatherings in those lands. The style of the calligraphy and illumination of these manuscripts was specific to these various regions, and one can distinguish them at a glance.
