This thesis compares the habitat and community ecology of cylindrical meltholes from the surface of two polar glaciers. These holes (termed cryoconite holes) are formed when wind-blown dust gathers in small depressions in the ice causing vertical melting by absorption of more radiation than the surrounding ice. The communities are complex microbial consortia of heterotrophic bacteria, cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae, and protists. Relationships between soil, physiographic, floristic, and stand properties were examined in second-growth stands on a range of imperfectly to poorly drained ecosystems on east Graham Island, Queen Charlotte Islands. The major objective was to describe ecological factors associated with variation in tree growth, as expressed by site index of western redcedar. Twenty Douglas-fir plantations, ranging from 5 to 15 years old, were examined on the east side of Vancouver Island. In all areas studied, salal was the dominant ground cover, and was suspected of being a major competitor with trees for water and nutrients. In each plantation, part of the area has been burned and part was unburned. In the northeastern Ionian Sea, two populations of dolphins, the short-beaked common dolphin and the common bottlenose dolphin, have been studied since 1993 by the Tethys Research Institute, Italy. Results show a low density of bottlenose dolphins, and a rapid decline in common dolphin numbers and encounter rates. I constructed an ecosystem model using Ecopath with Ecosim for the northeastern Ionian Sea to explain the two different abundance trends of these species of dolphins, and the trophic interactions with their prey and with the fisheries. The feeding strategies and habitat utilisation of agile wallabies (Macropus agilis) and swamp wallabies ( Wallabia bicolo() were studied on South Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay, Queensland. Utilisation of foredunes on the island was chiefly by agile wallabies with higher utilisation recorded on the more lush spinifex grass on the primary dune. This project investigated the fundamental principles of the Theory of Island Biogeography. How biodiversity is influenced by habitat age, size, isolation and quality was studied in two little-known ecosystems; pumice-rafted marine communities that travel through the Pacific Ocean and strand on shorelines, and Queensland's critically endangered <i>Melaleuca irbyana</i> forests. This research found that while habitat age, size and isolation were important for species richness; habitat quality, defined by resource availability and climate, was more influential for predicting biodiversity levels.
