Abstract:
Today, two-thirds of all Arab Muslims are under the age of thirty. This book takes readers inside the evolving competition for their support—a competition not simply between Islamism and the secular world, but between different and often conflicting visions of Islam itself. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research among rank-and-file activists in Morocco, the book shows how Islamist movements are encountering opposition from an unexpected source—each other. In vivid detail, the book describes the conflicts that arise as Islamist groups vie with one another for new recruits, and the unprecedented fragmentation that occurs as members wrangle over a shared urbanized base. Looking carefully at how political Islam is lived, expressed, and understood by young people, the book moves beyond the top-down focus of current research. Instead, it makes the compelling case that Islamist actors are shaped more by their relationships to each other than by their relationships to the state or even to religious ideology. By focusing not only on the texts of aging elites but also on the voices of diverse and sophisticated Muslim youths, the book exposes the shifting and contested nature of Islamist movements today—movements that are being reimagined from the bottom up by young Islam. This book, the first to shed light on this new and uncharted era of Islamist pluralism in the Middle East and North Africa, uncovers the rivalries that are redefining the next generation of political Islam.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an extended literature review, bringing together for the first time the strands of scholarship related to rentier state theory and to political Islam in the Middle East. In so doing, it sheds light on gaps in the scholarship, in particular the denial in rentier state theory scholarship of the political role played by Islamist groups in such states and the lack of study of the Gulf states by scholars of political Islam. The chapter then gives a brief background on definitional aspects of Islamism, as well as a description and brief history of the Muslim Brotherhood itself, as the region’s most powerful Islamist political group.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 offers a vista over the terrain of public Islam in Turkey. The chapter delineates four public mediations of Islam in contemporary Turkey: statist/bureaucratic Islam, mass Islam, partisan Islam, and consumerist Islam. After an excursion/excursus in Istanbul’s Taksim Square, it focuses on the Directorate of Religious Affairs and its statist vision of Islam as homogeneous and incontestable. Following this, it describes a rally organized by a right-wing Islamist party in Turkey in protest of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. Next, it considers the increasing sway that partisan Islam and the AKP (in Turkish, the Justice and Development Party/Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) have on public images of Islam generally. Finally, the chapter concludes with an interview with the editors of a prominent Muslim fashion magazine, which is also a preeminent expression of consumerist Islam.

Wolf, Anne. Political Islam in Tunisia. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190670757.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Political Islam in Tunisia uncovers the secret history of Tunisia’s main Islamist movement, Ennahda, from its origins in the 1960s to the present. Banned until the popular uprisings of 2010-11 and the overthrow of Ben Ali’s dictatorship, Ennahda has until now been impossible to investigate. This is the first in-depth account of the movement: one of Tunisia’s most influential political actors.Based on more than four years of field research, over 400 interviews, and access to private archives, Anne Wolf masterfully unveils the evolution of Ennahda’s ideological and strategic orientations within changing political contexts and, at times, conflicting ambitions amongst its leading cadres. She also explores the challenges to Ennahda’s quest for power from both secularists and Salafis. As the first full history of Ennahda, this book is a major contribution to the literature on Tunisia, Islamist movements, and political Islam in the Arab world.

Gilham, Jamie. Abdullah Quilliam, First and Last ‘Sheikh-ul-Islam of the British Isles’. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190688349.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a detailed examination of Abdullah Quilliam’s role as the first – and only – "Shaykh-ul-Islam of the British Isles." The title of Shaykh-ul-Islam was conferred on Quilliam by the Ottoman Sultan in 1892 and effectively made him the supreme authority on Islam and leader of Muslims in Britain. This chapter argues that, though honorific, the role was strategically important for the Ottoman Turks, who believed that Quilliam could be trusted to work in the interests of their empire at a time when the European powers were threatening its dismantlement. This chapter shows that Quilliam took the role equally seriously and that the "office" of the Shaykh-ul-Islam enabled him not only to represent the Liverpool Muslim community at civic events but also, to some extent, to lead and speak on behalf of Muslims and for Islam nationally and internationally.
