Abstract:
The article deals with the poem of the 15th century The Isle of Ladies, created in Middle English and from the end of the 16th to the middle of the 19th century published along with other works attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer. The poem is a description of two successive dreams of the narrator, united by the place in which he falls asleep — the Isle of Ladies. The place is presented as the equivalent of the Blissful Land that arose in Irish myths and sagas, since in the utopian world of the described island there is no hunger, disease and aging. The image of a horse appears in many spheres of the British culture and in each case it has a special symbolic meaning. It is important to notice that the symbolic meaning is more essential in the British mentality than the material one. Festivals can be one of the spheres where we can observe the versatility and historical meaning of the horse image. On the one hand, horses as real animals play a significant role in various events: horse competitions, horse shows, parades, royal ceremonies, etc. On the other hand, there is also personification of fancy images of horses at British festivals. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) causes direct pulmonary endothelial injury that can precipitate cell death. We investigated the ability of LPS to produce apoptosis in sheep pulmonary artery endothelial cells (SPAEC) grown in monolayer on plastic or collagen. When SPAEC were grown on plastic, LPS (100 ng/ml) caused internucleosomal DNA fragmentation (IDF) to 180- to 200-base pair ladders after 4 h. Higher-order chromatin damage, producing 50-kilobase DNA fragments, occurred within 2 h. Significant DNA strand breaks were seen in attached cells within 1 h incubation with > or = 1 ng LPS/ml, using in

A beautifully written and illustrated account of the threatened plant species that inhabit the British Isles. Britain and Ireland are home to around 300 species of rare flowering plants, and many more rare ferns, mosses, liverworts and freshwater algae. These are species at the cutting edge of biodiversity: fascinating, often beautiful, and in decline. Yet as some teeter on the brink, more rare species are still being discovered. Abstract This chapter surveys developments in fifteenth-century love poetry. It shows how poetry in this form invites contemplation of women’s experiences of love, evinces frustration with traditional expressions of male desire, and seeks to develop new modes of writing that are capable of encompassing women’s wants, including the possibility of women’s same-sex desire. It assesses the influence of Gower’s Confessio amantis on the development of these attitudes, and examines Lydgate’s Complaint of a Black Knight and Temple of Glass; the Kingis Quair; Richard Roos’s translation of Alain Chartie
