Abstract:
The article deals with the poem of the 15th century The Isle of Ladies, created in Middle English and from the end of the 16th to the middle of the 19th century published along with other works attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer. The poem is a description of two successive dreams of the narrator, united by the place in which he falls asleep — the Isle of Ladies. The place is presented as the equivalent of the Blissful Land that arose in Irish myths and sagas, since in the utopian world of the described island there is no hunger, disease and aging. The motifs of this poem, related to the central th

The image of a horse appears in many spheres of the British culture and in each case it has a special symbolic meaning. It is important to notice that the symbolic meaning is more essential in the British mentality than the material one. Festivals can be one of the spheres where we can observe the versatility and historical meaning of the horse image. On the one hand, horses as real animals play a significant role in various events: horse competitions, horse shows, parades, royal ceremonies, etc. On the other hand, there is also personification of fancy images of horses at British festivals. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) causes direct pulmonary endothelial injury that can precipitate cell death. We investigated the ability of LPS to produce apoptosis in sheep pulmonary artery endothelial cells (SPAEC) grown in monolayer on plastic or collagen. When SPAEC were grown on plastic, LPS (100 ng/ml) caused internucleosomal DNA fragmentation (IDF) to 180- to 200-base pair ladders after 4 h. Higher-order chromatin damage, producing 50-kilobase DNA fragments, occurred within 2 h. Significant DNA strand breaks were seen in attached cells within 1 h incubation with > or = 1 ng LPS/ml, using in

Is there a gender bias in promotions at information technology (IT) companies? Do women get an equal lift in their promotion prospects from performance improvements, work experience, and training as men? These are pertinent and important questions affecting today’s IT human capital. We analyze data from a leading IT services firm using robust econometric techniques to suggest that, contrary to expectations, women are more likely to be promoted. Although we do not find any evidence of overt discrimination, our findings, however, are far more nuanced and imply that there may be covert discrimina

Novel fluorinated foldamers based on aminomethyl‐1,4‐triazolyl‐difluoroacetic acid (1,4‐Tz‐CF2) units were synthesized and their conformational behaviour was studied by NMR and molecular dynamics. Their activity on the aggregation of the human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) amyloid protein was evaluated by fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The fluorine labelling of these foldamers allowed the analysis of their interaction with the target protein. We demonstrated that the preferred extended conformation of homotriazolamers of 1,4‐Tz‐CF2 unit increases the aggregation of hIAPP,

Introduction Ireland did not have a tradition of printed cookbooks prior to the 20th century. As a consequence, Irish culinary manuscripts from before this period are an important primary source for historians. This paper makes the case that the manuscripts are a unique way of accessing voices that have quotidian concerns seldom heard above the dominant narratives of conquest, colonisation and famine (Higgins; Dawson). Three manuscripts are examined to see how they contribute to an understanding of Irish social and culinary history. The Irish banking crisis of 2008 is a reminder that comments

Introduction Over the last decade, fungi have increasingly appeared in popular culture. Non-fiction texts, such as Melvin Sheldrake’s Entangled Lives (2020) and Doug Bierend’s Mycotopia (2021), illuminate some of the hidden lives of fungi and explore how we could utilise fungi, from sustainable myco-culture to building materials, and models of fungal communities. In turn, this emerging mycological knowledge inspires fiction exploring intersections of human and fungi, including M.R.
