Abstract:
Abstract Selected foliar applied insecticides were evaluated against PLH in Virginia-type peanut. ‘VA-C 92R’ peanut was planted on a producer’s farm in Isle of Wight County, VA using 36-inch row spacing. Foliar treatments were applied on 31 Jul as a full-coverage spray with a CO2-pressurized backpack sprayer calibrated to deliver 14.5 gpa at 50 psi through three D2-13 hollow-cone nozzles per row, one over the top and one on each side of each row. A RCB design was used with 4 replicates. Plots were 4 rows by 40 ft. PLH were sampled by making 5 sweeps per plot with a 15-cm-diameter sweep net and counting numbers of captured adults and nymphs. The pre-treatment sample was not taken on each plot, but was comprised of 20 random 5-sweep samples distributed throughout the planned test area. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and LSD procedures.

Abstract:
Abstract Selected insecticide/acaricides were evaluated for efficacy against TSSM in cv. ‘NC 7’ Virginia-type peanut in Isle of Wight County, VA. Peanuts were planted on 4 May using a 36-inch row spacing. All treatments were applied on 28 Jul. The Comite + 5 d treatment was applied again on 5 Aug. Karate, at the 0.025 and 0.04 lb (AI)/acre rates, Capture C, and Danitol were applied again on 9 Aug. All were applied using a CO2 pressurized backpack sprayer calibrated to deliver 14.5 gpa at 50 psi through three D2-13 disc-core hollow cone spray nozzles per row, 1 over the top and 1 on each side. A RCB experimental design was used with 4 replicates; plots were 4 rows by 15 ft. Treatments were evaluated on 28, 31 Jul and on 3, 7, 11, 16, 22 and 29 Aug by comparing the number of live mites in a 1.5 cm diam area on 2 randomly selected leaflets per plot. Mite counts were made in the field using 10x magnification lenses. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and LSD statistical procedures. Cumulative mite-days (CMD) were calculated for each treatment over the entire test period using Σ(Xi+1 – Xi)[(Yi + Yi+1)/2], where Xi and Xi+1 are adjacent sample dates and Yi and Yi+1 are corresponding points of mean mite number per leaflet.

Abstract:
The north-eastern Atlantic sacoglossan gastropod Elysia viridis was studied on littoral and sublittoral shores of the British Isles from 2001 to 2007 to evaluate its potential role in the known decline of the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp. fragile. Across its European range, this sacoglossan associates with eight genera of algal hosts within three algal orders and two divisions; these hosts include native and introduced macroalgae. The ‘specialist’ herbivore was investigated primarily within the rocky shore community at Lough Hyne Marine Reserve, County Cork, south-west Ireland, with comparative information from surveys of 95 other sites in the British Isles. In Lough Hyne, E. viridis associated with the green algae Codium, Cladophora and Chaetomorpha as well as the red alga Griffithsia. The sacoglossan associated with Codium, Cladophora and Chaetomorpha as well as the red alga Halurus in Devon, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. Recruitment of E. viridis to Codium spp. in the lough was substantially higher than in most areas of the British Isles with 100% of the Codium hosts attacked during annual September surveys. The strong autumn pulse of sacoglossan recruitment, coupled with the asynchronous population dynamics compared to other shores, indicates retention of planktotrophic larvae within the lough. The previously reported decline in sacoglossan density with tidal level was hypothesized to be caused by sublittoral predators. Although our experiments failed to demonstrate an effect by large predators, the foraging of the abundant fingerling fish and small crabs could not be tested conclusively. Field experiments were consistent with the interpretation of intense sacoglossan herbivory in certain areas of the lough. However, even if the sacoglossans contribute to the local decline of C. fragile in the lough, they cannot account for the regional decline of the alga on the north-eastern Atlantic shores.

Crowell, Mark. "Faunal variation and its potential for sampling bias in the Morgarts Beach Member of the Yorktown Formation (Pliocene)." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43396.

Abstract:
A detailed statistical study was performed on molluscan fossil assemblages collected from the Pliocene Morgarts Beach Member of the Yorktown Formation, located in Isle of Wight County, southeast Virginia. The principal objectives of this study were to examine potential sampling problems and biases inherent in paleontological research. This has been accomplished by statistically testing for the homogeneity, or lack thereof, in species assemblages obtained from samples collected from three localities within the Morgarts Beach Member. Multivariate analysis of variance, two-way analysis of variance, multiple comparison tests and cluster analysis were performed on data collected from a five horizon by five section sampling grid (18 feet [5.5 meters] high, 21 feet [6.4 meters] long) located at Morgarts Beach, Virginia. The results of this analysis demonstrate that the relative abundances of species present in the five horizons are significantly different, whereas the relative abundances of species present in the five sections are not significantly different. Results from cluster analysis show that species assemblages contained in samples collected from the Morgarts Beach Member located at Rushmere are substantially different from the Morgarts Beach type area assemblages, in terms of relative abundances of species. The reason for the lack of faunal similarity relates to the documented facies change between the two localities. The results demonstrate that there is no reliable method to obtain accurate census data (frequency abundance curves) from biostratigraphic or lithostratigraphic units deposited during anything but a restricted time interval. In addition, replicate sampling was found to be unnecessary when attempting to determine the relative abundances of species contained in closely spaced sections within the Morgarts Beach Member. Species accumulation curves were constructed from the data collected from the Morgarts Beach Member. Examination of these curves demonstrate that many rare species will not be found unless extensive collecting is undertaken.<br>Master of Science

Abstract:
This chapter considers the geographical conditions and jurisdictional arrangements that made English islands hard to govern. It examines the tension between concerns of central authority and insular assertions of privilege and exemption. The Isle of Man, with its Gaelic roots and Viking heritage, had claims to be an independent kingdom ruled by the earls of Derby. The Isles of Scilly were part of Cornwall, the Isle of Wight was politically attached to Hampshire, and Anglesey was a county of Wales, yet each behaved as if it were partly autonomous. Aristocratic proprietors such as the Stanleys, the Godolphins, the Oglanders, and the Bulkeleys vied for dominance with the central government and with island populations
