Abstract. The timing of the Laurentide Ice Sheet's final retreat from North America's Laurentian Great Lakes is relevant to understanding regional meltwater routing, changing proglacial lake levels, and lake-bottom stratigraphy following the Last Glacial Maximum. Recessional moraines on Isle Royale, the largest island in Lake Superior, have been mapped but not directly dated. Here, we use the mean of 10 new 10Be exposure ages of glacial erratics from two recessional moraines (10.1 ± 1.1 ka, one standard deviation; excluding one anomalously young sample) to constrain the timing of Isle Royale's

The Detroit River connects Lake Huron and Lake Erie of the Laurentian Great Lakes. The river once supported a substantial lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) fishery until the early 1900s, when habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing contributed to the collapse of the fishery and loss of spawning populations in the river. In the early 1970s, efforts were initiated to improve water and habitat quality, and in December 2005 a spawning male lake whitefish and viable eggs were collected; the first documented evidence of spawning since 1916. Abstract Lake Erie Is The Southernmost Of The Five Great Lakes. At its western end it is fed by the Detroit River, which carries the discharge from the three largest of those lakes (Superior, Michigan, and Huron), and at its eastern end it is drained by the Niagara River, which spills spectacularly into Lake Ontario. Along its southern shore, connected today by the asphalt ribbon of Interstate 90, is a string of cities historically associated with the coal-and-steel-based industry of the late nineteenth century: Buffalo, Erie, Cleveland, Toledo, and Detroit.
