Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Technikon, 2003.
This research report is based on a case study. It follows up on the research of a previous study by Muregerera (1996). His thesis was compiled in order to develop a model for a world-class manufacturing organization. For his case study, he chose Omnigraphics. Although his focus was on world class manufacturing principles, he did address Omnigraphics prior to the organization receiving ISO 9000 certification through the SASS. This research report therefore looks at the transformation that Omnigraphics went through, from an organization without a formal quality management system, to one with a functional quality management system. Chapter one defines quality management systems and the benefits of a formal quality management system. Current research is discussed in chapter two together with the benefits and requirements of the ISO system. Chapter three addresses the challenges, which Omnigraphics faced prior to ISO 9000 implementation and the changes that occurred once this organization was certified to ISO 9001. A comprehensive survey was done to identify the actual benefits that suppliers and customers see in dealing with an ISO 9000 listed organization. Chapter four looks at the participants of the survey as well as the questions posed. Chapter five gives the results of the survey in a graphical format as well as an interpretation of the results. The research report also focuses on the new revision of the ISO 9000 series and this is addressed in chapter six. The report closes by reviewing the research and looking at the future of the ISO 9000 series.

Engineering by its very nature is associated with quality processes. Ineffective processes have the potential to jeopardize the chances of providing consistently, products that meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements. By implication, this senario also calls for organizational transformation. SA Five Engineering (Pty) Ltd (SAF), which will serve as the target organization for this research study has in the past year suffered numerous complaints of poor products as a result of ineffective processes, impacting on production quality. Both 150 9000 and the concept of Total Quality Management have the potential to mitigate ineffective processes within SAF. The key research objective with this research study, is to recommend how to improve ineffective processes and the competitive advantage of SAF through improved products. Furthermore, to analyze the business organization in order to determine the extent to which Total Quality Management principles are deployed with the aim of developing a model, which will serve as a benchmark for sustained improvement. The research problem deals with ineffective processes within SAF which impacts adversely on delivery of quality products and services. The research design and methodology to be conducted within the ambit of this research study is applied research, as applied research is designed to apply its findings to solve a specific existing problem. The research will furthermore fall in the social world as the research relates to a structured business research study pertaining to how things are, and why. The research will be conducted from both an empirical and theoretical research paradigm, using a survey for the purpose of data collection. The research method that will be applied within the context of this research study will be a case study research.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Quality))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
The study has been carried out on impact of implementing ISO standards on SMEs to seek general evaluation of its benefits. The purpose of this paper is to outline the benefits of ISO implementation on South African small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The SME sector is the backbone of developed economies, which is regarded as the engine of growth for economies all over the world. For developing countries, SMEs often offer the only realistic prospects for increases in employment since they employ the largest percentage of the workforce population. With the trend towards global market orientation and trade liberalisation, SMEs are moving towards implementing quality systems. The empirical study aims to explore current implementation of quality management tools and advanced improvement techniques in the Western Cape SMEs, in order to understand what factors impact on how quality control is managed. Two main categories are analysed, namely tangible and intangible. This study will assist other SMEs in developing countries on ISO 9000 implementation. This study is restricted to small and medium-sized companies in South Africa implementing ISO system and other quality tools or techniques. Data collection of this study is done based on a combination of survey questionnaires and interviews with managers, supervisors and general staff.

Abstract: With the development of the process of production of vehicles, more and more, there is a larger involvement of the supplier of the automotive chain. The assemblers of vehicles develop activities and service patterns for their similar suppliers that the quality of the supplied item is the possible best. However, the situation becomes complex for the suppliers due to the several formation processes and development of suppliers that the assemblers demand. This generates a high cost of maintenance of those demands of the customers and that for a lot of times, in spite of similar, they should be executed separately. A process of certification of second leaves for some customer or a certification of third part in some normative pattern of quality that assists the customer's demands generates a work hand involved that will produce costly costs for the suppliers. In some cases, until it makes unfeasible to possess a company assembler of self-driven vehicles as customer. The proposal of this work is to analyze the implications of the demands of the assemblers on the chain of suppliers as well as the standardization proposed through the technical specification ISO/TS16949, their advantages and disadvantages and the roads that can be traveled for a standardization of the quality in an optimized way and with low cost. A study of case of a process of implantation of the technical specification ISO/TS16949 is presented as base for the analyses

Abstract:

Several changes have occurred in the area of quality and productivity, especially between the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century, and some of the main reasons for such changes are related to: competitiveness among organizations at national and international level, the tighteninging of trade barriers, with the creation of large economic blocs; and retraction of world economic growth due to demand from consumers who came to seek products and services with higher quality and lower price. This series of changes made the quality of products and services become essential to the survival of businesses. The adoption of an ISO 9000 Quality Management System (QMS) is an option for companies seeking a differential in the area of quality and recognition through certification. However, the implementation of a quality management system is not a warranty of its success per se, since there must be indeed an internal mobilization and involvement of all organization members with the system. Therefore, to ensure the involvement of all members for this purpose, there must be: internal motivation for quality, the commitment of individuals, knowledge of quality management system combined with the possibility of enriching work, in which the employee can provide ideas and suggestions for improvement. Considering these aspects, the purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the constructs: organizational commitment, motivation, organizational learning and empowerment, in the context of ISO 9000 Quality Management System. The quantitative case study, which was carried out through a five-point Likert scale survey, aimed to investigate the perception of employees of company X in relation to constructs and the ISO 9000 Quality Management System in place in the company since the year of 2013. Main results include that the employees have a good perception of the QMS implanted in the company, showing significant difference between the averages by age and tenure. A multiple regression analysis shows that employee perception of QMS is influenced by resource empowerment and motivation due to relationships in the workplace, having a positive correlation with 10 of the 11 factors found in the study.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the face of increasing competition, Business Schools increasingly have to evaluate the quality of the service that they offer to current and prospective students. The most significant factor affecting an organisation's performance is the quality of its products and services in relation to the products and services of competitors. Measurement of service quality is a function of customer satisfaction, which in tum is based on a perception of how the service conforms to prior expectations thereof. A widely accepted method of quality assurance used in industry is ISO 9000 certification. For academic institutions the de facto method of providing confidence in the quality of the education they offer is through academic accreditation. The University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) is unclear - in the light of its academic accreditations - of the benefits to be derived from implementing ISO standardisation within the organisation. The iso 9000 series is a set of quality standards, of which ISO 900 I: 2000 is one, which is primarily concerned with the quality management process. It deals with what the organisation does to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer and applicable regulatory requirements, and to continually improve the organisations performance in this regard. It is important to note that compliance with ISO standards is not intended to guarantee the quality of a product or service, it is however intended to provide confidence in the processes which produced or delivered the product or service. In evaluating the applicability of ISO 9000 in the service industry, it is concluded that there is little difference from how its standards and guidelines apply in manufacturing to how they apply in service industries. The USB is found to have implemented an extensive quality management system in order to attain various academic accreditations, most notably EQUIS accreditation. Thus from an academic perspective there would be little to gain from USB implementing ISO 9001: 2000, even though the standard is perfectly suited for academic environments. Where advantages would most likely be realised is in the peripheral business and support functions of the USB.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Globalisation has changed markets significantly. In order to maintain and improve competitiveness it is generally agreed among executives that the quality of products and services is essential (Omachonu & Ross, 1994: iii). In order to strive for higher quality, organisations have chosen different paths to achieve this goal. Several years ago one of the most discussed topics was the DIN EN 9001 certification. Thousands of organisations have taken this step towards quality management and are certified today. The DIN EN 9001 became the global standard, and there are markets where companies are not able to operate without this certification anymore. Some companies have profited greatly from the introduction of ISO 9000, because for the first time a quality management system (QMS) was introduced. It initiated significant restructuring programs. Consequently, processes were streamlined and organisations became more transparent. But many companies still do not “live” the concept, but instead and only show relevant paperwork to the external certification body in order to obtain the certificate. Even more particularly companies, which live the QMS face the question of which concepts are suitable to not only further improve quality and productivity but also to generate long-term sustainable business success. For these companies Total Quality Management (TQM) can be a very promising concept. Although the concept of TQM already dates back several decades it became very popular recently. TQM is a concept that puts quality in the centre of all aspects. Its principles encompass the involvement of all employees, and it strives for long-term customer satisfaction. TQM is based on continuous improvement and focuses on sustainable achievements. The objectives of this approach are not only long-term business success but also benefits for the individual employees and the society. Therefore TQM can be considered as one of the most far-reaching quality concepts existing today. The Fliess Company is a medium sized production company for welding wires. In 2001 Fliess introduced the IS0 9001: 2000. It has taken the company several years to fully live the QMS, after it mainly introduced it only to satisfy customers’ requirements of the certification. Today the processes are aligned in accordance with ISO 9001: 2000 and the company lives the QMS. But as a producer of very specialised premium products, management realised that it needed continuing on in order to maintain the competitive advantage. Therefore Fliess is busy at present implementing TQM. There are various areas of applying TQM at Fliess. The main focus lies on further improving customer satisfaction through continuous improvement and special attention is paid to the involvement of the individual employee. But TQM needs to be implemented in a very careful way to prevent a failure. Organisational changes must be supervised closely by top management. If top management is not fully committed and does not fully support the implementation in both the short and long term it can be very frustrating for the employees, and the implementation will not only fail but might even have negative effects, too.

Abstract:
In the last decades, several organizations in the civil construction segment have been searching for the implementation and certification of quality management systems. A quality certification, when well conducted, can be an important tool to ensure QMS efficiency and continuous improvement, thus bringing advantages for the organization. However, many organizations have not yet recognized the opportunities for improvement that external audits may provide. The main objective of this study is to analyze and compare the variations of the organizational characteristics of the civil construction operating in Curitiba and Metropolitan Region that have quality certifications and those that do not. This objective requires a research to provide theoretical basis on the quality in the construction, then a review of the literature on the subject was made to base the research. Another part of the research was the collection of information from a representative sample of the population through the Survey Method. The instrument adopted for data collection was a quantitative questionnaire, applied to companies in the civil construction sector in Curitiba-PR and Metropolitan Region, to measure and identify the correlation between quality certification and organizational characteristics. The data were treated and organized based on a descriptive and multivariate analysis. Based on the bibliographic review and the interpretation of the data obtained in the quantitative research, it was possible to recognize that the organizational characteristics that are most influenced by the quality certifications are the number of hours of training, the formalization of positions and functions, and the formalization of activities and processes.
