Abstract:

The paper deals with aspects of standardization in relation to international developments. In the E. U. the role of the organization for standardization, CEN, is changing. This is the result of the tie of standards with the directives issued by the E.C. and affects the National Standards. For shipping and shipbuilding, IMO will be the reference. ISO is the international organization to develop the standards. In Europe, standardization for the maritime industry, the international (ISO) developments and the role of CEN in relation to Council Directives of the E.C. are the concern of the administrators in Brussels. CEN TC 300, the CEN Technical Committee for Shipbuilding, is responsible for the liaison between ISO, IMO, and the national standard organizations. A review is given of the constraints, advantages and disadvantages of international standards for the shipbuilding industry.

Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Technikon, 2003.
This research report is based on a case study. It follows up on the research of a previous study by Muregerera (1996). His thesis was compiled in order to develop a model for a world-class manufacturing organization. For his case study, he chose Omnigraphics. Although his focus was on world class manufacturing principles, he did address Omnigraphics prior to the organization receiving ISO 9000 certification through the SASS. This research report therefore looks at the transformation that Omnigraphics went through, from an organization without a formal quality management system, to one with a functional quality management system. Chapter one defines quality management systems and the benefits of a formal quality management system. Current research is discussed in chapter two together with the benefits and requirements of the ISO system. Chapter three addresses the challenges, which Omnigraphics faced prior to ISO 9000 implementation and the changes that occurred once this organization was certified to ISO 9001. A comprehensive survey was done to identify the actual benefits that suppliers and customers see in dealing with an ISO 9000 listed organization. Chapter four looks at the participants of the survey as well as the questions posed. Chapter five gives the results of the survey in a graphical format as well as an interpretation of the results. The research report also focuses on the new revision of the ISO 9000 series and this is addressed in chapter six. The report closes by reviewing the research and looking at the future of the ISO 9000 series.

Abstract:

This study has two major purposes: (1) To determine the applicability of ISO standards for calculating sound power levels emitted by acoustic noise sources in-house at Ericsson, Kista. (2) To design a software tool for estimation of emitted sound power levels from a radio installation. To determine the applicability of different ISO standards during the design phase at Ericsson, viable standards were chosen and measurements were taken on the exact same noise source following each chosen standard. The evaluation of these measurements was made with different points in focus.  Accuracy  Availability of instrumentation and measurement environments  Time consumption  Complexity of measurement conduction. The ISO standard that showed most promise was the ISO 3744. This standard uses a method with fairly high accuracy and is quite easy to implement compared to other standards tested. All instrumentation required to follow this standard, except for a calibrated microphone calibrator, is available at Ericsson, Kista. The standards ISO 3747 and ISO 9614-2 might also be of interest, during the design phase, if the equipment necessary is acquired. The acoustic noise estimation tool was written in the Microsoft Excel embedded programming language, Visual Basic for Application version 7.1. With the tool it is possible to specify the layout of a radio installation for mobile traffic with different mounted radios and estimate both the sound power level emitted from all these radio units and the sound pressure level at a distance from the radio installation. It is also possible to define new radio units in the tool and save them for later use. The tool was verified by acoustic measurements taken on a test setup at MWL, KTH.
Denna studie har två huvudsyften: (1) Att bestämma tillämpligheten av ISO-standarder för beräkning av ljudeffektnivåer som avges av bullerkällor internt på Ericsson, Kista. (2) Att utforma ett mjukvaruverktyg för uppskattning av utsända ljudeffektnivåer från en radioinstallation. För att bestämma tillämpligheten av olika ISO-standarder under designfasen på Ericsson, valdes genomförbara standarder ut och mätningar gjordes på en och samma bullerkälla enligt varje separat standard. Utvärderingen av dessa mätningar gjordes med olika punkter i fokus. • Noggrannhet • Tillgång till utrustning och mätmiljöer • Tidsåtgång • Mätmetodens komplexitet Den ISO-standard som visade sig mest lovande var ISO 3744. Denna standard använder en metod med relativt hög noggrannhet och är ganska lätt att genomföra jämfört med andra standarder som testats. Alla instrument som krävs för att följa denna standard, med undantag för en kalibrerad mikrofon kalibrator, finns på Ericsson, Kista. Standarderna ISO 3747 och ISO 9614-2 kan också vara av intresse om den utrustning som behövs, för att följa standarderna införskaffas.

Abstract:

Technological shift has become significant and an area of concern in the health sector with regard to securing health information assets. Health information systems hosting personal health information expose these information assets to ever-evolving threats. This information includes aspects of an extremely sensitive nature, for example, a particular patient may have a history of drug abuse, which would be reflected in the patient’s medical record. The private nature of patient information places a higher demand on the need to ensure privacy. Ensuring that the security and privacy of health information remain intact is therefore vital in the healthcare environment. In order to protect information appropriately and effectively, good information security management practices should be followed. To this end, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published a code of practice for information security management, namely the ISO 27002 (2005). This standard is widely used in industry but is a generic standard aimed at all industries. Therefore it does not consider the unique security needs of a particular environment. Because of the unique nature of personal health information and its security and privacy requirements, the need to introduce a healthcare sector-specific standard for information security management was identified. The ISO 27799 was therefore published as an industry-specific variant of the ISO 27002 which is geared towards addressing security requirements in health informatics. It serves as an implementation guide for the ISO 27002 when implemented in the health sector. The publication of the ISO 27799 is considered as a positive development in the quest to improve health information security. However, the question arises whether the ISO 27799 addresses the security needs of the healthcare domain sufficiently. The extensive use of the ISO 27002 implies that many proponents of this standard (in healthcare), now have to ensure that they meet the (assumed) increased requirements of the ISO 27799. The purpose of this research is therefore to conduct a comprehensive comparison of the ISO 27002 and ISO 27799 standards to determine whether the ISO 27799 serves the specific needs of the health sector from an information security management point of view.

Abstract:

This work in the domain of quality management and business process design looks at how the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems are designed and implemented in business. It is the aim of the research reported in this thesis to support manufacturing companies when modelling a Fulfil Order Process by identifying the links to the ISO 9001 quality standard and highlighting potential impact from any changes in the process or the standard during a redesign project. It does so by presenting a modelling technique, named IDEF9ooow, hich will enablec ompaniest o take a systemic perspectiveo f a Fulfil Order Process identifying all relevant links to ISO 9001. A research strategy based around the experiences of companies when designing business processes with links to ISO 9001 was adopted. In-depth case studies carried out by the author showed that simply documenting what an organisation does to satisfy the various elements of ISO 9001 is still one of the most common approaches adopted. This results in a process-oriented character only at the documentation stage. It is the result of limited guidance on how to integrate the requirements of ISO 9001 in business processes. The work proceeded by exploring the domains of business processes, the use of systems thinking to explain business processes and the relevance of ISO 9001 requirements from a processbased viewpoint. A set of criteria was developed to identify activities, information and other flows controlled by ISO 9001 to design a Fulfil Order Process in a manufacturing company. This provided the context for the development of the modelling technique IDEF90oow, hich is an enhanced version of IDEFo, and its validation by review and by use in two manufacturing companies. The originality of this work lies in the identification and emphasis by the author of the need to take a systemic view of business processes when designing or redesigning a processbased ISO 9001 quality management system. Also, criteria for a technique to address the modelling of a Fulfil Order Process were identified. Furthermore this contribution to knowledge includes the identification of links between ISO 9001 requirements and a holistic Fulfil Order Process. This led to the development of further criteria for modelling such a business process showing the links to ISO 9001. IDEFooo represents an improved modelling approach that fulfils the identified criteria and permits the systemic design or redesign of a Fulfil Order Process while establishing the links controlled by the ISO 9001 quality standard

Išsamiai analizuojami vadybos sistemų integravimo ypatumai, kokybės ISO 9000 ir aplinkos apsaugos ISO 14000 vadybos sistemos standartų reikalavimai bei juos įtakojantys veiksniai, kokybės bei aplinkosaugos sistemų naudą įmonėje. Teoriniai sprendimai pagrįsti: Abramavičiaus Š., Adomėno V., Jucevičiaus R., Paulauskaitės N., Rutkausko J., Vanago P., Gardin D., Hoyle D., Tsiakals J., West J. bei kitų autorių moksliniais straipsniais ir knygomis, kuriose teoriniais aspektais analizuojamos ISO 9000 serijos standarto kokybės vadybos sistemų diegimo problemos, vadybos sistemų integravimo ypatumai, Aplinkos vadybos sistemų diegimas Lietuvos įmonėse. Atlikta anketinė apklausa, siekiant identifikuoti įmonės veiklos valdymą įdiegus kokybės ir aplinkos apsaugos vadybos sistemas. Patvirtinama autorės suformuluota mokslinio tyrimo hipotezė, kad VKV – į kokybę orientuotas UAB „NCC titanas“ vadovavimo būdas, pagrįstas visų jos narių dalyvavimu, siekiant ilgalaikės sėkmės tenkinant klientą ir naudos visiems savo organizacijos nariams bei visuomenei. Tačiau visgi UAB „NCC titanas“ reiktų didesnį dėmesį skirti paslaugų ir darbuotojų veiklos kokybės gerinimui, VKV žinių tobulinimui, komunikavimo procesui bei vidinių ir išorinių klientų lūkesčių tenkinimui.
This work analyses the practice of constructional enterprise administration after introducing into it the quality and anti-pollution standards, also the problems of ISO 9000 quality of standard management system implemention regard to general quality management. The management system integration peculiarities are analysed as well as the requirements for quality of ISO 9000 series and anti-pollution ISO 14000 series management system standarts, factors that influence them, quality and anti-pollution systems benefit in enterprise. Theoretical decisions are based on: Abramavičius Š., Adomėnas V., Jucevičius R., Paulauskaitė N., Rutkauskas J., Vanagas P., Gardin D., Hoyle D., Tsiakals J., West J. and other authors memoirs and books in which the ISO 9000 series quality standards of management systems implemention problems and pecularities, anti-pollution management system installation in Lithuania companies and so on are analysed by theoretical aspects. The survey was made by seeking to identify the administration of enterprise after implemention of quality and anti-pollution management systems. The hypothesis of author that the style of leadership TQM, which is oriented to JSC „NCC titanas“ and based on participation of all members, trying to reach permanent success to meet the requirements of customer and get a big benefit for all members of organization and society was confirmed. Abstract:

The ISO 19900 series of Standards address the design, construction, transportation, installation, integrity management and assessment of offshore structures. Offshore structural types covered by ISO include: bottom-founded ‘fixed’ steel structures; fixed concrete structures; floating structures such as monohull FPSOs, semi-submersibles and spar platforms; arctic structures; and site-specific assessment of jack-up platforms. All the fundamental ISO Offshore Structural Standards have now been published representing a major achievement for the Oil and Gas Industry and representative National Standards Organizations. A summary of the background to achieving this milestone is presented in this paper. In parallel, other Codes and Standards bodies such as API, CEN, CSA, Norsok and the Classification Societies are looking to harmonize some, or all, of their Offshore Structures Standards in-line with ISO, wherever this is desirable and practical. API, in particular, have been pro-active in reviewing and revising their Offshore Recommended Practices (RPs) to maximize consistency with ISO, including revising the scope and content of a number of existing API RPs, adopting ISO language, and embracing technical content. Given API’s long heritage of Offshore Standards it is not surprising that this remains very much a mutual effort between ISO and API with much in ISO Standards building on existing API design practice. Now published, those involved in developing and maintaining the ISO 19900 series of Standards have to deal with both new and existing challenges, including encouraging wider awareness and adoption of these Standards, enhancing the harmonization effort, ensuring technical advances are captured in timely revisions to these Standards, and most pressing to ensure that the next generation of offshore engineers are encouraged to participate in the long-term development of the Standards that they will be using and questioning. This paper is one of a series of papers at this OMAE Conference that outline the technical content and future strategy of the ISO Offshore Structures Standards.

Abstract:

Analyses that examine the role of international standards on export performance has been concentrated on quality certifications. Very little is known about the impact of environmental certifications on exports. In this paper we employ firm-level data from Ecuador to assess the impact of the ISO 14001 environmental certification on export outcomes. The results show that holding an ISO 14001 increases the likelihood of becoming an exporter by 0.31 percentage points (equivalent to 4%), and that this positive effect is concentrated among large firms. We did not find evidence that the environmental certification has a causal impact on the level or the growth rate of exports. Consequently, the results suggest that the ISO 14001 certification is most useful in reducing information frictions, allowing firms to initiate export transactions.
