Abstract:
The complete amino acid sequence of the alpha chains of both isolectins found in pea seeds has been determined using automated Edman degradation. We show that the alpha chains of these two proteins differ only at their C-termini: isolectin B is two amino acids longer than isolectin A. Furthermore, the alpha chains of both isolectins are shorter than would be predicted from the nucleotide sequence of a cDNA clone for pea lectin. We suggest, therefore, that these proteins arise from differential C-terminal processing. Amino acid composition data and C-terminal analysis show that the beta chains

Aim: To study the effects of total phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and its isolectins on cell death and apoptosis in human HEp-2 carcinoma cells and to analyze the possible molecular mechanisms of lectin induced apoptosis. Materials and Methods: The commercial preparation of the kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) lectins and HEp-2 cells were used. Apoptosis index was determined using acridine orange and ethidium bromide staining. The expression levels of apoptosis mediator cleaved caspase-3 and proapoptotic Bax protein were studied by Western blot analysis. The gene expression levels were analyzed by

Abstract:
Abstract:
Lectins are ubiquitous proteins that has domain(s) for recognition and binding to carbohydrates and that can decipher the glicocode in the structures of the glycans linked to soluble glycoproteins and membrane. Molecular interactions based on protein-carbohydrate recognition play key roles in numbers biological processes, such as: cellular communication, gametes recognition, embryonic development, and immune response, among others. Lectins from algae are poorly studied compared to plant lectins and this fact is due to the difficulty of obtaining material for study. The isolectins isolated from
