Abstract:
This article re-examines the Isopata cemetery, a Final Palatial burial site north of the Knossos palace excavated in 1909–10. After presenting unpublished material from the excavations, including a previously unknown tomb, the article compares the cemetery with other contemporary burial sites in the Knossos valley and at Poros. While all tomb use in this period appears to have been a statement of high status, Isopata (and several of its tombs in particular) nevertheless stands out in terms of architectural extravagance and in its appeals to prestige symbolism - including the continuation of actual ritual practices - from the Neopalatial past.

Abstract:
Introduction In addition to the four pillars of homeopathy, vitalism and the miasmatic theory are often used to explain the health–disease process. According to Hahnemann's concepts, homeopathic miasms are the main obstacle to the cure of chronic diseases, with psora being the fundamental cause of all forms of diseases. According to modern genetics, the disease-promoting epigenetic alterations are the fundamental cause of the manifestation of chronic diseases. Objective This article develops a philosophical–scientific correlation between chronic miasms and disease-promoting epigenetic modifications, aiming to justify the isopathic use of auto-sarcode of an individual's DNA as homeopathic medicine. Results Based on the study of homeopathic doctrine and epigenetics, a conceptual and functional correlation is observed between homeopathic chronic miasms and disease-promoting epigenetic modifications. Additionally, several experimental studies suggest that homeopathy's mechanism of action may be by modulating gene expression. Conclusions By the philosophical–scientific correlations described, it is inferred that disease-promoting epigenetic alterations are the biological representation of the chronic miasms, suggesting the isopathic use of auto-sarcode of DNA as homeopathic therapeutic modulator of gene expression for the management of chronic diseases.

Abstract:
Background Homeopathy has been used to treat epidemic diseases since the time of Hahnemann, who used Belladonna to treat scarlet fever. Since then, several approaches using homeopathy for epidemic diseases have been proposed, including individualization, combination remedies, genus epidemicus, and isopathy. Methods The homeopathic research literature was searched to find examples of each of these approaches and to evaluate which were effective. Results There is good experimental evidence for each of these approaches. While individualization is the gold standard, it is impractical to use on a widespread basis. Combination remedies can be effective but must be based on the symptoms of a given epidemic in a specific location. Treatment with genus epidemicus can also be successful if based on data from many practitioners. Finally, isopathy shows promise and might be more readily accepted by mainstream medicine due to its similarity to vaccination. Conclusion Several different homeopathic methods can be used to treat epidemic diseases. The challenge for the future is to refine these approaches and to build on the knowledge base with additional rigorous trials. If and when conventional medicine runs out of options for treating epidemic diseases, homeopathy could be seen as an attractive alternative, but only if there is viable experimental evidence of its success.

Abstract:
This article explores expressions of cultural identity in the LM II mortuary data from the Knossos valley, in the context of the issue of a ‘Mycenaean’ presence there. It proposes that the burial record is less useful for trying to establish a mainland origin for the people interred in the tombs, than for exploring how people chose to represent themselves and each other in death. In this light, the cultural influences in the tomb architecture and assemblages of the Isopata and Kephala tombs in particular are examined. The experimentation apparent in such tombs suggests that the mortuary sphere was employed as a forum for status display in the context of a social transition at Knossos, with mainland traits being one element in a range of options that were selectively taken up and adapted.

Abstract:
The spread of Fusarium head blight of wheat from a small area inoculum source was examined in wheat plots (100, 625, or 2,500 m2) inoculated in the center with Gibberella zeae-colonized corn kernels or macro-conidia sprayed on heads at anthesis. With the first inoculation method, disease foci were produced from ascospores released from perithecia formed on inoculated kernels. With the second inoculation method, disease foci were produced by macroconidia directly applied to the heads. Some plots were misted during anthesis. Plots were divided into grids, and disease incidence on spikelets and seeds was assessed at the grid intersections. Isopath contour maps were constructed using an interpolation procedure based on a weighted least squares method. Disease gradients were constructed from the isopath contours in the direction parallel to average nightly wind vectors using an exponential model. This study was conducted over a 3-year period at two sites: one in Quebec and one in Ontario. Both inoculation methods resulted in a discrete, primary focus of head blight in each plot, with one or two smaller secondary foci in some plots. The highest incidence of disease on spikelets or seed was commonly displaced somewhat from the inoculum source, usually downwind. The gradient slopes of seed and spikelet infection ranged from −0.10 to −0.43 m−1 in plots with ascospore inoculum and from −0.48 to −0.79 m−1 in plots inoculated with macroconidia. Seed infection declined to 10% of the maximum within 5 to 22 m from the focal center in asco-spore-inoculated plots, and within 5 m in a macroconidia-inoculated plot. Gradients were usually steeper upwind compared with downwind of the inoculum source. In misted plots, incidence of disease was higher and more diffuse than in nonirrigated plots. Based on gradients and dispersal patterns, disease foci in plots inoculated with G. zeae-colonized corn kernels probably arose from airborne ascospores rather than from splash-borne macroconidia and were the result of infection events that occurred over a short period of time. Comparison of conidial- and ascospore-derived disease gradients indicated a lack of secondary infection, confirming that Fusarium head blight is primarily a monocyclic disease.

Abstract:
Introduction: Escherichia coli (E. coli) is one of the most common agent involved in digestive and urinary tract infections (UTI).
Aims: The objective of this study was to explore whether homeopathic/isotherapic preparations could interfere with pathophysiological aspects of murine cystitis induced by E. coli in an experimental model.
Materials and Methods: Balb/c female mice underwent urethral inoculation of E. coli (UPEC) JJ079 (urosepsis prototype) in a concentration of 7.5x1011 CFU/ml. The animals were divided into four groups: control group; group treated with hydro-alcoholic solution; group treated with biotherapic pure strain of E. coli and group treated with Cantharis 6cH. The drugs were prepared according to the Brazilian Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia and were administered orally, with free access to drinking water for two days after infection. After euthanasia, bladder and kidney were weighed and collected for histopathology and immunohistochemistry analysis. The following markers were used: CD3 (T lymphocytes), CD79 (B lymphocytes), MIF, NK (Natural killer), VEGF-e (inflammatory mediators). Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA followed by the Fisher’s Test, p≤0.05 being significant.
Results: ANOVA test revealed no significance in relation to the mean and standard deviation values. Fisher Test was used to analyze proportions differences. Cantharis 6cH and E. coli 30cH treatment significantly increased B lymphocytes in relation to T lymphocytes, NK cells and macrophages in bladder mucosae (p≤0.05). In renal pelvis, the medicines caused significant reduction of B lymphocytes in relation to T Lymphocytes and macrophages. VEGF-e cells reduction was seen in the pelvis in relation to phagocytes (p≤0.05).
Discussion and conclusion: B lymphocytes are able to differentiate into plasma cells, for the production of immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) are the group of antibodies produced in the immune response. Its function is to protect the mucous membranes, which form a protective barrier (bladder, for example). Since mucous membranes represent the main route of pathogens access to the body the protection provided by IgA is of paramount importance. Therefore, this study suggests that the studied drugs could interfere in the migration of B lymphocytes from pelvis to the bladder, so as to produce IgA. VEGF-e could stimulate the recruitment of inflammatory cells.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The terms Epidemic and Pandemic refer to spread of infectious diseases in different countries, nations or regions. Infectious diseases have overrun millions of people in the past, as well as doing now when the world is facing current coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, which has killed more than 607,781 people till July 2020, according to the World Health Organisation. Homeopathy has played an important role in controlling epidemic and pandemic diseases distressing humanity since the time of Hahnemann who cured scarlet fever with Belladonna and served community with best treatment. This article reviews the role of homeopathy in the management and prevention of pandemic and epidemic diseases. Methods A homeopathic literature search was performed using several bibliographic databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed and Google search engine was used for collection of all relevant information from reports, review articles, archived files and Web pages etc., published in English language till July 2020. Results Gathered information based on scientific evidences manifested the efficacy of homeopathy using various approaches such as individualisation, Genus epidemicus and isopathy for prevention and treatment of epidemic diseases. Conclusion Homeopathy showcased its effectiveness in reduction of mortality and morbidity in epidemics for years. Moreover, prophylactic use of Genus epidemicus for symptomatic Covid-19 cases can be inexpensive, safe and more realistic.

AbstractThe objective of the study was to examine the effect of the homeopathic remedy Betula 30c vs placebo for patients with birch pollen allergy. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was carried out. Tablets were given for 4 weeks during the birch pollen season. The setting was Oslo, Norway, May 1995.Patients were aged between 18 and 50 y; 32 patients received Betula 30c tablets and 34 patients received placebo tablets. The main outcome measure was the total score of 17 different allergy symptoms. Daily total scores were calculated, as well as differences and ratios between the run-in and the following time periods. Point estimates of the median difference between the experimental and placebo groups, with their 95% confidence intervals, were the main measure of effect. No statistically significant difference between the groups was found during the first and last period of May. However, from 8 to 18 May, a clinically interesting difference was revealed between the groups, those receiving Betula 30c having fewer and less serious symptoms. For some days these differences were statistically significant. Surprisingly, this group reported more aggravation from the tablets than did the placebo group. With a statistical power of 70% for a defined clinically interesting difference (25%), the present results indicate that treatment with Betula 30c during the pollen season deserves further attention.

Abstract:
Postexposure conditioning, as a part of hormesis, involves the application of a low dose of stress following exposure to a severe stress condition. Depending on whether the low-dose stress is of the same type of stress or is different from the initial high-dose stress causing the diseased state, postconditioning can be classified as homologous or heterologous, respectively. In clinical homeopathy, the same distinction is found between isopathic and homeopathic application of low-dose substances. Homeopathy is unique for its Similia principle, which implies that substances causing symptoms in healthy biological systems can be used to treat similar symptoms in diseased biological systems. The evaluation of the Similia principle in an experimental set-up requires the analysis of a complex sequence of ‘damage-disease-treatment-effect’ events. The process of recovery from an insult is then monitored and a possible beneficial effect on this recovery process, upon application of a range of substances in low dose, can subsequently be analyzed using molecular and functional parameters. It is then possible to compare the effect of treatment with the degree of similarity between the diseased state and the effects caused by homologous and/or different heterologous substances. Beneficial effects of postconditioning mild stress conditions have been described in terms of an increase of the synthesis of stress proteins. In this commentary paper, we present additional information on this aspect. The experimental data suggest that the beneficial effect of the low-dose stress condition used as heterologous postconditioning is related to similarity in molecular stress response.

Abstract:
The Sinian Dengying Formation in the Sichuan Basin, southwest China, mainly consisting of dolomites, is one of the most ancient gas-producing series in the world. During the past half-century, gas exploration in the formation has been largely based on the lithostratigraphic correlation, but a regional correlation scheme of time significance is usually insufficient, resulting in the difficulty of lateral correlation of strata between gas fields. Aiming to overcome the problem, we completed an interpretation of about 2500-km 2D regional seismic lines by using the seismic sequence analysis method. As a result, a sequence stratigraphic framework was successfully constructed, which consists of two sequences and five systems tracts. By integrating analysis of isopatch maps with stratal stacking patterns, we identify three depositional facies belts within the formation, which are a shallow-water platform facies belt in the eastern and southern regions, a relatively deep-water (intraplatform) basin facies belt in the northwestern region, and a northwest-dipping slope facies belt between them. During the development of sequence one in the lower of the Dengying Formation, retrogradation and aggradation dominated in the eastern and southern platform region whereas depositional condensation prevailed in the northwestern basin region. At that time, the depocenter was located on the eastern and southern platform region. However, sequence two in the upper of the Dengying Formation is dominated by the northwest-dipping sigmoid, oblique and shingled prograding packages of the platform-margin slope facies belt, indicating that the depositional center was shifted to the previous basin region in the northwest. As a result, the basin was filled gradually, and the platform-slope-basin topography was finally evolved into a northwest-dipping ramp. Our study suggests that the Late Sinian Sichuan Basin would consist of a series of shallow-water platforms separated by relatively deep-water depressions or (intraplatform) basins, which provides important clues for gas exploration.

Abstract:
AbstractThe objective of this research was to determine if the homeopathic medicine Betula 30c is more effective than placebo at reducing symptoms of pollen allergy in patients sensitive to birch pollen. It was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Tablets were given both as a prophylactic agent, once a week four weeks before the pollen season and as an acute remedy during the pollen season. The study was done in Oslo, Norway, in May 1996 and involved 73 children, adolescents and young adults from 7 to 25 y of age. Allergy-symptoms were assessed on a visual analogue scale (VAS) by patients or parents. Main outcome measure was the median (with its 95% confidence interval) of the symptom scores for all the treated patients, each day during a 10-day period. The pollen count was very low in 1996, only three days were high enough to provoke allergic symptoms. Surprisingly, the verum treated patients fared worse than the placebo group; they used more rescue medication and had higher symptom scores during these three days. Homeopaths might attribute the findings to a putative aggravation response, but the results certainly do not lend support to the usefulness of the tested prophylactic approach, under conditions of low allergen exposure.

Abstract:
In homoeopathy, the choice of remedy is based on a consideration of the totality of an individual's symptoms and circumstances, including personality, behaviours, fears, responses to the physical environment, food preferences and so on. Dr. Hahnemann gives a fair idea on the importance of the constitution in Aphorism 5 of Organon of Medicine, wherein he sates “Useful to the physician in assisting him to cure are the particulars of the most probable exciting cause of the acute disease, as also the most significant points in the whole history of the chronic disease, to enable him to discover its fundamental cause, which is generally due to a chronic Miasms. In these investigations, the ascertainable physical constitution of the patient (and intellectual character, his occupation, mode of living and habits, his social and domestic relations, his age, sexual function, etc., are to be taken into consideration. He mainly refers constitution to the inherent in the natural frame, or inherent nature of the individual. Hahnemann reviewed the use of miasms as homoeopathic remedies and pointed out that what Hering was suggesting was not the same old isopathic methods because the material used was potentised by the homoeopathic technique and given in minimal dose. This changes an ordinary isopathic substance into a homoeopathic remedy if used properly.
