Abstract:
Chapter 1 presents the “Ben-Gurion doctrine,” formulated in the 1950s, the closest Israel has to a formal defense doctrine, which still informs its strategic thinking today. The doctrine viewed the Arab-Israeli conflict as uniquely long, bitter, all-encompassing, and existential and considered Israel’s geography a strategic nightmare, making it a vulnerable state with indefensible borders. It stressed the fundamental strategic asymmetries with the Arabs, including territorial and population size, economic resources, staying power, military objectives and capabilities, and diplomatic support. Abstract:
This chapter describes a methodological facet of ideological criticism, a materialist analysis, and then applies it to Amos 1:3—2:8. Also known as socioeconomic criticism, a materialist analysis investigates economic class relations in the prophetic texts, such as rich and poor, elite and peasant, empire and vassal state, and so forth. It involves a twofold analysis, investigating the socioeconomic and historical contexts in which the prophets ministered, as well as a literary-critical study of the prophetic texts themselves. Applied to Amos 1:3–2:8, the materialist analysis focuses on Amos’s

Abstract:
This chapter describes how increased juridification and demands to apply international humanitarian law (IHL) have influenced the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The authors analyze the IDF’s compliance with IHL and other legal frameworks through a multilevel and multidimensional model of military compliance describing the law and external institutions involved in applying it. The past decades have seen the relatively autonomous sphere of the military increasingly come under judicial overview. Judicial and international pressures have also increased the role of the operational legal advisors. The

Abstract:
Chapter 11 presents the primary conclusions derived from the proceeding chapters, as a basis for the national security strategy proposed in chapter 12. The conclusions are divided into four categories, general, politico-military, military, and domestic policy. The chapter also discusses the pitfalls involved in recommending a national security strategy, such as physical and political feasibility; limitations stemming from the absence of classified information; and possible normative biases. The chapter begins by setting out Israel’s vital national security objectives, that is, a core set of fu

When is preventive war chosen to counter nuclear proliferation? This book looks beyond systemic and slow-moving factors such as the distribution of power. Instead, it highlights individual leaders' beliefs to explain when preventive military force is the preferred strategy. Executive perspective—not institutional structure—is paramount. The book makes its argument through archivally based comparative case studies. It focuses on executive decision making regarding nuclear programs in China, North Korea, Iraq, Pakistan, and Syria. The book considers the actions of US presidents John F. Kennedy,

Abstract:
In light of the discrepancy between Britain’s and France’s postcolonial security roles in Africa, which seemed already determined half a decade after independence, this book studies the making of the postcolonial security relationship during the transfer of power and the early years of independence (1958–1966). The focus is on West Africa and, more specifically, on Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire. While it was in this subregion that the decolonization wave emerged and the Cold War made its debut in Africa, the newly independent states of Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire rapidly evolved into key players in
