Mongolica in Mu Us Sandy Land, China." Applied Sciences 8, no. 10 (October 10, 2018): 1872. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/app8101872.

Abstract:
Characterizing changes in the soil particle-size distributions (PSD) are a major issue in environmental research because it has a great impact on soil properties, soil management, and desertification. To date, the use of soil volume fractal dimension (D) is a feasible approach to describe PSD, and its calculation is mainly dependent on subdivisions of clay, silt, sand fractions as well as different soil particle-size classification (PSC) systems. But few studies have developed appropriate research works on how PSC systems affect the calculations of D. Therefore, in this study, topsoil (0–5 cm) across nine forest density gradients of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica plantations (MPPs) ranging from 900–2700 trees ha–1 were selected in the Mu Us sandy land, China. The D of soil was calculated by measuring soil PSD through fractal model and laser diffraction technique. The experimental results showed that: (1) The predominant PSD was distributed within the sand classification followed by clay and silt particle contents, which were far less prevalent in the study area. The general order of D values (Ds) was USDA (1993) > ISO14688 (2002) > ISSS (1929) > Katschinski (1957) > China (1987) > Blott & Pye (2012) PSC systems. (2) Ds were significantly positively related to the contents of clay and silt, and Ds were significantly negatively to the sand content. Ds were susceptible to the MPPs establishment and forest densities. (3) Ds of six PSC systems were significantly positive correlated, which indicated that they not only have difference, but also have close connection. (4) According to the fractal model and descriptions of soil fractions under different PSC systems, refining scales of clay and sand fractions could increase Ds, while the refining scale of silt fraction could decrease Ds. From the conclusions above, it is highly recommended that USDA (1993) and Blott & Pye (2012) PSC systems be used as reliable and practical PSC systems for describing and calculating D of soil PSD.

Abstract:
To characterize both emergency room (ER) and hospital discharge dispositions of patients presenting with farm-related injuries. The 2012 National Trauma Data Bank was queried in August 2017 for injuries occurring on a farm. Patients were stratified by gender, age group, race, Injury Severity Score (ISS), and injury type. We performed logistic regression analysis to correlate parameters with likelihood of discharge home or death. P values < 0.05 were considered significant. Five thousand six hundred thirty-one patients were identified, the majority of whom were male (72%) and white (85%). The most common mechanisms of injury included animal-related (29%), followed by falls, vehicles, and other causes. The highest ISSs were seen in vehicular injuries (11% ISS of 251) and the greatest fatality rate was seen in machinery injuries (4%). Four thousand seven hundred fifty-three (84%) patients were admitted to the hospital, and 4056 (72%) were discharged home from the ER or after hospitalization. One hundred thirty patients (2%) died of their farm-related injury. Most patients presenting to the ER with farm-related injuries survive, are admitted to the hospital, and are ultimately discharged home. Few patients die of their injuries. Animal injury is most common and machinery injury most lethal of farm trauma patients presenting to the ER.

Abstract:
AbstractBackgroundIn Iraq, where Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other groups have contributed to escalating violence in recent years, understanding the epidemiology of intentional firearm-related fatalities is essential for public health action.MethodsThe Iraqi Ministry of Health (MoH; Baghdad, Iraq) compiles surveillance of fatal injuries in eight of Iraq’s 18 governorates (Baghdad, Al-Anbar, Basrah, Erbil, Kerbala, Maysan, Ninevah, and Al-Sulaimaniya). Information is collected from coroner’s reports and interviews with family members. Analysis was performed on intentional firearm-related injuries, excluding injuries from intentional self-harm or negligent discharges, that occurred during 2010-2013, a subset of all fatal injuries, and compared to previously published explosive-related fatalities.ResultsOverall, the dataset included 7,985 firearm-related fatalities. Yearly fatalities were: 2010=1,706; 2011=1,642; 2012=1,662; and 2013=2,975. Among fatalities, 86.0% were men and 13.7% women; 83.4% were adults and 6.2% children <18 years of age. Where age and sex were both known, men aged 20-39 years accounted for 56.3% of fatalities. Three “high-burden” governorates had the highest fatality rate per 100,000 population—Baghdad (12.9), Ninevah (17.0), and Al-Anbar (14.6)—accounting for 85.9% of fatalities recorded in the eight governorates. Most fatalities occurred in the street (56.3%), followed by workplace (12.2%), home (11.3%), and farm/countryside (8.4%). Comparing the ratio of firearm-related fatalities to explosives-related fatalities revealed an overall ratio of 2.8:1. The ratio in Baghdad more than doubled from 2.9 in 2010 to 6.1 in 2013; the highest ratios were seen outside the high-burden governorates.ConclusionsFirearm-related fatalities remained relatively stable throughout 2010-2012, and almost doubled in 2013, correlating with increased ISIS activity. Three governorates contributed the majority of fatalities and experienced the highest fatality rates; these saw high levels of conflict. Firearm-related fatalities disproportionately affected younger men, who historically are over-represented as victims and perpetrators of violence. More than one-half of fatalities occurred in the street, indicating this as a common environment for conflict involving firearms. Firearms appear to account for more fatalities in Iraq than explosives and largely accounted for escalating violence in Baghdad during the study period. The high ratio observed outside the high-burden governorates is reflective of very low numbers of explosives-related fatalities; thus, violence in these governorates is likely non-conflict-related. These observations provide valuable public health information for targeted intervention to prevent violence.NerlanderMP,LeidmanE,HassanA,SultanASS,HussainSJ,BrowneLB,BilukhaOO.Fatalities from firearm-related injuries in selected governorates of Iraq, 2010-2013.Prehosp Disaster Med.2017;32(5):548–555.

Abstract:

Abstract:
OBJECTIVEPediatric firearm injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the youth of the United States. The epidemiology of and outcomes following gunshot wounds to the head (GSWHs) are in need of systematic characterization. Here, the authors analyzed pediatric GSWHs from a population-based sample to identify predictors of prolonged hospitalization, morbidity, and death.METHODSAll patients younger than 18 years of age and diagnosed with a GSWH in the National Sample Program (NSP) of the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) in 2003–2012 were eligible for inclusion in this study. Variables of interest included injury intent, firearm type, site of incident, age, sex, race, health insurance, geographic region, trauma center level, isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI), hypotension in the emergency department, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, and Injury Severity Score (ISS). Risk predictors for a prolonged hospital stay, morbidity, and mortality were identified. Odds ratios, mean increases or decreases (B), and 95% confidence intervals were reported. Statistical significance was assessed at α < 0.001 accounting for multiple comparisons.RESULTSIn a weighted sample of 2847 pediatric patients with GSWHs, the mean age was 14.8 ± 3.3 years, 79.2% were male, and 59.0% had severe TBI (GCS score 3–8). The mechanism of assault (63.0%), the handgun as firearm (45.6%), and an injury incurred in a residential area (40.6%) were most common. The mean hospital length of stay was 11.6 ± 14.4 days for the survivors, for whom suicide injuries involved longer hospitalizations (B = 5.9-day increase, 95% CI 3.3–8.6, p < 0.001) relative to those for accidental injuries. Mortality was 45.1% overall but was greater with injury due to suicidal intent (mortality 71.5%, p < 0.001) or caused by a shotgun (mortality 56.5%, p < 0.001). Lower GCS scores, higher ISSs, and emergency room hypotension predicted poorer outcomes. Patients with private insurance had lower mortality odds than those with Medicare/Medicaid (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.7–3.4, p < 0.001) or government insurance (OR 3.6, 95% CI 2.2–5.8, p < 0.001). Management at level II centers, compared to level I, was associated with lower odds of returning home (OR 0.3, 95% CI 0.2–0.5, p < 0.001).CONCLUSIONSFrom 2003 to 2012, with regard to pediatric TBI hospitalizations due to GSWHs, their proportion remained stable, those caused by accidental injuries decreased, and those attributable to suicide increased. Overall mortality was 45%. Hypotension, cranial and overall injury severity, and suicidal intent were associated with poor prognoses. Patients treated at level II trauma centers had lower odds of being discharged home. Given the spectrum of risk factors that predispose children to GSWHs, emphasis on screening, parental education, and standardization of critical care management is needed to improve outcomes.

Abstract:
Abstract Thailand was initially cautious with its bilateral investment treaties (BITs), consistently eschewing investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). From 1989 it began agreeing to ISDS, but only if both states were party to the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes Between States and Nationals of Other States, which Thailand signed in 1965 but never ratified. From 1993, BITs increasingly provided for ad hoc arbitration. Major disputes emerged from the 1990s instead under contracts with foreign investors containing arbitration clauses. From 2004 concession contracts required Cabinet pre-approval. This limitation was extended to all public contracts from 2009, after the first treaty-based ISDS award against Thailand, although two further claims have been filed recently. A 2002 Model bit was revised in 2013 to incorporate more pro-host-state provisions, but Thailand had net foreign direct investment (FDI) outflows in 2011 and still concludes treaties with ISDS. These patterns suggest ‘more than bounded’ rationality.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ministerial Regulation Number 134 of 2016 is a form of ratification of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code 2002 (ISPS Code, 2002), the objective of which is to establish a consistent standard framework for evaluating risk and enabling the government to compensate for changes in threats through measures appropriate safety measures. In its development, there are several regulations related to implementing the 2002 ISPS Code in Indonesia. These regulations were formed by adjusting the standard regulations in the 2002 ISPS Code with the safety conditions of ships and ports in Indonesia. The problem is, Indonesia has several large ports that operate as international ports in international trade. The type of research used is normative legal research sourced from primary, secondary, and tertiary legal materials whose data collection is carried out by literature study. The results of the study show two things: (1) Maritime security arrangements relating to shipping safety standards and port facilities in the 2002 ISPS Code are divided into two parts, namely part A (Part A) containing systematic arrangements and implementation of the ISPS Code for signatory countries including and Definition, Purpose, Scope of Ship Safety Standards and Port facilities and ISPS Code Compliance Procedure. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Advances in genomics have highlighted the potential for individualized prognostication and therapy in multiple myeloma (MM). Previously developed gene expression signatures have identified patients with high risk (Kuiper et al, Blood 2016) however, they provide few insights into underlying disease biology thereby limiting their use in informing treatment decisions. Glycosylation is deregulated in MM (Glavey et al), and potential consequences include altered cell adhesion, signaling, immune evasion and drug resistance. In this study we have utilized RNA sequencing data from the IA7 CoMMpass cohort to characterize the expression profile of genes involved in glycosylation. This represents a novel approach to identify a distinct molecular pathway related to outcome, which is potentially actionable. Methods A pathway based approach was adopted to evaluate genes implicated in glycosylation, including the generation of selectin ligands. A literature review and KEGG pathway analysis of pathways relating to O-glycans, N-glycans, sialic acid metabolism, glycolipid synthesis and metabolism was completed. RNA Cufflinks-gene level FPKM expression of 458 patients enrolled in the IA7 cohort of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) CoMMpass trial (NCT145429) were analysed as derivation cohort. We developed expression cut-offs using a novel approach of adjusted existing linear regression model to define the gene expression cut-off by applying 3rd Quartile data (q1+q2/2-qmin). The analysis of overall survival (OS) was completed using adjusted 'kpas' R-package according to our cut-off model. Association between individual transcripts and OS was analyzed with log-rank test. Genes with p-value <0.2 were used in subsequent prioritization analysis. This cut-off methodology was employed to define the nearest neighbor for a gene for Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). As far as 4th neighbor above and below the cut off was used to have centrally driven gene selection method for prioritization. The gene signature was validated in GSE2658 (Shaughnessy et al) dataset. Results Initial analysis yielded 184 prospective genes. 147 were significant on univariate analysis. Following further prioritization of these genes, we identified thirteen genes that had significant impact upon outcomes (GiMM13). Figure 1 reveals that GiMM13 signature has a significant correlation with inferior OS (HR 4.66 p-value 0.022). The prognostic impact of stratifying GiMM13 positive (High risk) or GiMM13 negative (Low risk) by ISS stage was evaluated. In Table 1. Kaplan Meier estimates generated for GiMM13 (High) or GiMM13 (Low) stratified by ISS are compared statistically using the log rank test. The prognostic ability of GiMM13 to synthesize distinct subgroups relative to each ISS stage is shown in Figure 2. ISS1-Low is the the lowest risk group with best prognosis. Hazard ratios relative to the ISS1-Low group were 1.8, p-value 0.029 (ISS2-Low), 2.1, p-value 0.031 (ISS3-Low), 4.3, p-value 0.04 (ISS1-HR), 5.9, p-value 0.039 (ISS2-HR) and 3.1, p-value 0.001 (ISS3-HR). The GiMM13 signature enhances the prognostic ability of ISS to identify patients with inferior or superior outcomes respectively. Conclusion While the therapeutic armamentarium for MM has expanded considerably, the significant molecular heterogeneity in the disease still poses a significant challenge. Our data suggests aberrant transcription of glycosylation genes, involved predominantly in selectin ligand synthesis, is associated with inferior survival outcomes and may help identify patients likely to benefit from treatment with agents targeting aberrant glycosylation, e.g. E-selectin inhibitor. Consistent with recent findings in chemoresistant minimal residual disease (MRD) (Paiva et al, Blood 2016), it would appear that O-glycosylation, rather than N-glycosylation is most significantly implicated in this biological processes conferring inferior outcomes. In conclusion, using a novel pathway-based approach to identify a 13-gene signature (GiMM13), we have developed a robust tool that can refine patient prognosis and inform clinical decision-making. Abstract:

ABSTRACT Compustat is frequently used for both research and decision making. It has been documented that information found in the Compustat database differs from both the information found in other accounting databases and the information disclosed in corporate financial filings (San Miguel 1977; Rosenberg and Houglet 1974; Yang, Vasarhelyi, and Liu 2003; Tallapally, Luehlfing, and Motha 2011, 2012; Boritz and No 2013). In this study, we conduct the first large-scale comparison of Compustat and 10-K data. Specifically, we compare 30 accounting line items of approximately 5,000 companies for the period from October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012. We find that the values reported in Compustat significantly differ from the values reported in 10-K filings. We also find that the amount and magnitude of the original data alterations introduced by Compustat depend on the type of the accounting item and company characteristics, such as industry and size.

Abstract:
Abstract This article analyzes recent Iraqi texts, some authorizing and others condemning rape as a weapon of war. The focus is on Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) perpetrators of sexual violence, their Yazidi victims, and two women’s demands for reparative, restorative justice. Held in sexual slavery between 2014 and 2015, Farida Khalaf and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad published testimonials that detail their experiences. Determined to bring ISIS rapists to justice, they narrate the formerly unspeakable crimes that ISIS militants committed against them. Adjudicated as a crime against humanity at the end of the twentieth century, rape as a weapon of war, and especially genocide, no longer slips under the radar of international attention. This study argues that the Yazidi women’s brave decision to speak out may help break the millennial silence of rape survivors.

Abstract:
This study compares RT Arabic and Sky News Arabia websites in their coverage of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria violent organization known as ISIS from 1 June 2014 until 30 June 2016, in terms of framing type and the image reflected about ISIS. The quantitative content analysis of the news articles shows similarities and few differences in the news coverage of ISIS. The study suggests that RT and Sky News share a few features in framing ISIS but still differ significantly. The two websites adopt mainly the conflict frame in presenting ISIS issues; however, they report ISIS differently when it comes to violence and human interest frames. The findings also reveal that RT and Sky News differ partially in the image reflected about ISIS on their websites. RT has exaggerated ISIS’s image more distinctly than Sky News. Besides, even though threat is the most dominant discourse about ISIS in the two websites, RT promotes ISIS as powerful and exaggerates its strength in its coverage more than Sky News.

Abstract:
Abstract How successful is the Islamic State’s online strategy? To what extent does the organization achieve its goals of attracting a global audience, broadcasting its military successes, and marketing the Caliphate? Using Twitter and YouTube search data, collected throughout 2015 and early 2016, we assess how suspected ISIS accounts, sympathizers, and opponents behave across two social media platforms, offering key insights into the successes and limitations of ISIS’s information warfare strategy. Analyzing the tweet content and metadata from 16,364 suspected ISIS accounts, we find that a core network of ISIS Twitter users are producing linguistically diverse narratives, touting battlefield victories and depicting utopian life in the Caliphate. Furthermore, a dataset of over 70 million tweets, as well as analysis YouTube search data, indicates that although pro-ISIS content spreads globally and remains on message, it is far less prolific than anti-ISIS content. However, this anti-ISIS content is not necessarily anti-extremist or aligned with Western policy goals.

Abstract:
Recent discussion amongst scholars and practitioners related to current issues in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college athletics has focused on areas such as the widespread commercialization of amateur sports, consistent corruption within athletics departments at NCAA member institutions, extensive exploitation of student-athletes and the necessity of a “pay for play” employee compensation model for student-athletes (see, for example, Benedict & Keteyian, 2014; Branch, 2011; Huma & Staurowsky, 2012; Nocera & Strauss, 2016; Southall & Staurowsky, 2013; Staurowsky, Maxcy, Karcher, Southall, Berri, & Otto, 2015). However, there has been minimal scholarly and industry discourse on how to leverage some of the revenues generated at the NCAA, conference and individual athletics program levels in order to develop innovative and sustainable higher education solutions that would prepare all student-athletes for career and personal success after participation in college athletics. The primary objective of this journal article is to encourage a more informed conversation about important issues in college athletics in part by proposing several practical strategies that would improve the overall student-athlete experience and further align participation in college athletics with the core goals of institutions of higher education. This research note provides an overview of the college athletics business model at Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions within Division I of the NCAA. In addition, this article reviews the current NCAA Division I governance structure. An accurate knowledge of the business and governance realities within college athletics is essential to understanding that paying student-athletes an hourly wage or annual salary is actually not one of the main system issues or central student-athlete wellbeing priorities of advocates for student-athletes, athletics leaders and higher education administrators. This article analyzes the primary issues and areas in which key college athletics stakeholders presently seek change and improvement. This article also spotlights innovative, culturally relevant student-athlete career and professional development programs recently developed by the University of Central Florida, Oregon State University and Vanderbilt University. Finally, this article provides a series of recommendations for all stakeholders involved in college athletics to optimize the student-athlete academic and athletic experience and to improve the level of career preparedness of all student-athletes.

Abstract:
This paper aims to explain Turkey's border security policy in dealing with non-state actors in Northern Syria. Turkey's policy was carried out after five years of involvement in the Syrian crisis and one month after a failed coup attempt. This study uses the theory of securitization by Buzan that explains the existence of threat and vulnerability factors faced by the state in anarchic international structures. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method with the type of causality analysis. This paper found that threats and vulnerabilities pushed Turkey to launch a series of military operations as border security policies to rid North Syria of ISIS and PKK/PYD/YPG militias to control the adverse effects caused by the presence of non-state actors such as civilian and military casualties, property damage, as well as instability and disintegration. The border security policy confirms the increasingly important role of Turkey in the region while demonstrating Turkey's consistency in pursuing national security interests even outside its territory

Abstract:
To the best of the researcher’s knowledge many studies (e.g., Bunzel: 2015) have been conducted studying the social practices of ISIS discourse only. Others (e.g, Buckingham, and Alali: 2019) focus upon the linguistic aspects of that discourse. The present paper aims at filling this gap by investigating both the social and the linguistic elements that characterize ISIS ideology. The present study focuses on analyzing the first speech delivered by Abu Bakkar Al Baghdadi in 2014 through implementing critical discourse analysis methodologies. The objective of this analysis is to outline the ideology of ISIS through exploring the critical social and cultural aspects together with the linguistic features in the text under investigation. The study will adopt an eclectic model of analysis and research based on Fairclough's (1992) principles of critical discourse analysis and Van Dijik’s ( 1980) framework of semantic structures (topics). Both global and local semantics are studied so as to relate social to linguistic practices and vise versa. The results of the research show that this speech has a distinctive tactic language that is full of figures of speech, in particular euphemism and dysphemism that help the speaker transfer his intended ideologies.

Abstract:
The question of neutrality in audio description (AD) has been discussed by professionals and researchers. Following several studies started by Praxedes Filho and Magalhães (2013, 2015), this article analyzes if evaluative stances identified via the Appraisal System (AS) in the AD script of the play Miralu and the Magic Telescope (Miralu e a Luneta Encantada) can be related to narratological elements. For this purpose, we have adopted a corpus-based methodology, using categories of AS, up to the second level of delicacy, as well as narratological ones based on Jiménez Hurtado (2010) and Pavis (2011, 2015). As a result, we have found 166 co-occurrences of evaluative stances and narratological elements, among which there are 73 (43,98%) associated to gesture, 42 (25,30%) to costume and 40 (24,10%) to lighting descriptions. These findings suggest that these co-occurrences are probably not coincidental, taking into consideration that other studies have already pointed out the importance of subjective description in the AD scripts.

Abstract:
Age estimation through skeletochronology and mark-recapture of free-living Liolaemus leopardinus (Squamata: Liolaemidae) from Chile. Age determination is a crucial component of ecological studies. Researchers have relied on different methods and techniques, for example mark-recapture, body size, and skeletochronology, to assess the age of free-ranging individuals. We used all three methods to estimate the age structure of a population of Liolaemus leopardinus, a highly social and saxicolous lizard species endemic to the temperate region of central Chile. This high-elevation and secretive species is considered threatened and, although efforts have been made to reveal more specifc details about the species’ natural history, crucial details of its biology are still unknown. Our goal was to associate the number of Lines of Arrested Growth (LAGs) to snout–vent length (SVL) and use LAGs as an age estimation proxy on free-ranging individuals. For the skeletochronology analyses, a combination of toe-clips was collected when each subject was frst captured in 2012–2013. SVL for all captured individuals was recorded during two different feld seasons (austral spring to fall of 2011–2012 and 2012–2013). SVL data were also available for 10 individuals initially collected and permanently marked in 2005 (one juvenile and nine adults) and recaptured in 2011–2012. Three of those 10 subjects were captured again in 2012–2013. Our results revealed the formation of LAGs in L. leopardinus and a high degree of bone remodeling in both juveniles and adults. This bone remodeling combined with the high rapprochement in peripheral LAGs on the samples of the oldest lizards suggest that phalangeal bones are not suitable for age determination in this species. On the other hand, our mark-recapture results allowed us to assign individuals to four different age-classes when a subject’s SVL was associated with activity periods and recaptures. Individuals of L. leopardinus are long-lived and their lifespan can exceed a decade. Female lizards become sexually mature at three to four years of age.

Abstract:
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are being affected by the rise of terrorism and radicalism which in turn has been driven by the creation of ISIS' state in Iraq and Syria in mid-2014. The group's presence in Iraq and Syria is inciting many Gulf civilians to travel to Syria to take part in the conflict against al-Assad or to act as local fundraisers for the organization. Furthermore, after a while, the Gulf fighters are either moving back to their home countries or to other conflict zones such as Libya and Yemen, and vice versa. This paper examines how GCC countries are countering the threats posed by ISIS to their national security by focusing on the counter-ISIS policies developed on the national level. The paper identifies three patterns of threats that include the recruitment of their citizens to join the conflict in Syria, the local replica of ISIS that has recently targeted Shiite mosques in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and private donations channelled to the armed groups in Syria. These threats are examined in detail in the first section of this paper as they represent different aspects of ISIS' influence and appeal in the Gulf societies. In order to avoid generalizations, the analysis and discussion in this paper are based on the examination of the profiles of a sample of 15 Gulf fighters recruited by ISIS during 2014–2015 originating from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait. The paper also examines the policies adopted at the national level in the GCC countries to curb ISIS' influence and appeal, and identifies the main challenges encountered by these countries in countering ISIS.
