Zhao, Xiaoping. "Investigating Shareholder Social Activism From an Issue-Selling Perspective—Issues, Strategies, and Success." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/23887.

Abstract:
Building on the logic of issue selling, my dissertation explores the micro-processes of shareholder social activism through which shareholders interact with targeted firms and also addresses which micro-processes could affect the effectiveness and the success of shareholder social activism. To do this, my dissertation develops a theory with respect to the approaches of linguistically framing the contents of and of presenting shareholder social activism. Based on a qualitative (descriptive) analysis on 1,612 shareholder social proposals, my dissertation identifies six packaging strategies that are used by the proponents to linguistically frame the contents of their proposals and two selling strategies used by the proponents to present their proposals. Subsequently, a quantitative analysis demonstrates that the effectiveness of shareholder social proposals would be largely determined by the joint effects of opportunity framing, threat framing, coalition building, and repeated submitting and that other packaging strategies would have little unique contribution to the effectiveness and the success of shareholder social activism. I argue that my dissertation would make contributions to the understanding of shareholder social activism and also offer some theoretical considerations for future studies on issue selling, although my dissertation might not directly contribute to the body of work of issue selling.<br>Ph. Abstract:
This study presented a comprehensive review of Kenneth Waltz's structural realism of international politics. Waltz pursues parsimonious theory by adopting elegant definitions of structure. His neorealistic approach is an impressive intellectual achievement. It is an elegant, simple, deductively rigorous instrument geared for scientific contribution. Yet this pure structural realism provides an insufficient basis for explaining international relations. Neorealism is one presentation of reality among many. It does not pretend to reflect all realities. Thus, I suggest that we adopt the complex interdependence concept as a thought experiment regarding that which international politics might look like if the basic assumptions of realism were revised and how we overcome inefficient and over-consumptuous control of great powers that defend the status-quo via the excuse for international stability.<br>Department of Political Science

Carlsson, Wincrantz Pernilla, and Josefin Wahlberg. "Sexuality - a sensitive issue."

Abstract:
Sexuality is affected by both illness and treatments, which is a reason why nurses ought to incorporate sexuality into nursing practice. Despite being aware of the importance of patients’ sexuality, many nurses choose not to address the issue, which could possibly cause the patient unnecessary suffering as sexual dysfunction can be the only symptom indicating severe illness. The aim of this study was to explore nurses’ attitude towards patients’ sexuality throughout life. The study was conducted as a literature review based on eleven scientific articles. Qualitative as well as quantitative articles were included in the study. Results showed that there are a number of barriers that affect nurses’ attitudes towards patients’ sexuality. The majority of all informants were well aware that addressing patients’ sexuality formed part of their duties as nurses, however, only a small number of nurses actually did address the issue. The most prominent barrier iden-tified by both nurses and nursing student was their self-reported lack of education in sexology.

Abstract:
Issue tracking is one of the vital parts in maintaining computer  systems.  It is utilized in anything from small independent companies to large enterprises. The tracking does not just provide developers and other personnel with crucial information regarding their systems current state, but additionally stores useful documentation if any error reoccurs in the future. However, if the tracking issue would be deficient in some way, the complete process of developing or maintaining a system could affected negatively in great extent. This thesis work has looked into a scenario where the tool has been to slow, overly complicated and obsolete. It has made a large negative impact on the work force that uses the tool and made tracking issue to a discouragement. The thesis work has thence investigated features of the existing tool, suggested a better solution to use based upon these findings, followed by the development of a web application. When the application was finished, its usability was tested by the intended staff and performance tests were conducted. The test results showed that the application had been implemented successfully in many aspects. Unfortunately, due to deficient technical choices, the project did struggle with implementing all features as expected. The thesis work did consequently learn the hard way the importance of a choosing development techniques very thoroughly.

Abstract:
The traditional issue selling process refers to strategic actions taken at a subsidiary in order to gain attention from the HQ. This study aims to broaden the theories on issue selling to also cover internal issue selling, which refers to the individual level of issue selling within a subsidiary. Further is attention and initiative taking worth investigating when studying issue selling, whereas these underlying constructs of issue selling are highlighted in the paper. For this specific study we have performed a case study with L’Oréal Sweden to investigate how the individuals are selling issues within the subsidiary. This micro-level focus of the issue selling process have the potential to contribute to an understanding of the process and the underlying constructs of issue selling on a macro perspective. The findings of this study indicate a tendency that issue selling exists on a subsidiary level. Thereby it could be argued that ideas and initiatives raised by the individuals within a subsidiary have the potential to generate in strategic and organizational improvements on a macro perspective for the MNC.

Dunn, Elizabeth Margaret. "Women's issues and politics : getting the childcare issue onto a municipal political agenda." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30544.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines women's issues and the political agenda. Several factors affect the likelihood of a women's issue getting onto the formal political agenda of government (municipal, provincial, and federal). The nature of the issue (the degree to which it challenges the status quo) affects the political outcome: those issues which have fit into current and historical legislative patterns (such as welfare state guidelines) have been more successful. A patriarchal family ideology places limitations on the proper role of women: women have held primary responsibility for the care of children and family. Women's labour force participation creates parameters for government involvement in issues such as childcare. The lobbying and organizational skills of the political actors involved are prerequisites for gaining access to government decision-makers. While the entry of women into the political arena has not insured the entry of women's issues onto the political agenda, female politicians have been especially important in bringing women's issues forward for debate and action. However, government bureaucracy has often been a barrier in the implementation of legislation concerning women's issues. I present a case study of a particular women's issue (childcare) at the municipal level of government. Five locations are examined in the Greater Vancouver area, using a combination of qualitative methods (personal interviews) and quantitative research techniques (government statistics, official documents, and reports from a variety of community organizations). In spite of the steadily increasing labour force participation of women in all locations, the response of local governments to the childcare issue has varied greatly — childcare is on Vancouver's political agenda but not that of the four district municipalities examined. Vancouver's involvement has been more comprehensive and longterm (more childcare spaces, an involved Social Planning Department, two task forces, a Children's Advocate, and buildings and sites for childcare purposes). The response of municipal councils continues to reflect patriarchal notions of the family (where childcare is a private, family responsibility). Alternatively, Vancouver council has recognized a permanent restructuring of the family and the ongoing involvement of the larger community in childcare. At the same time, the lobbying approach of Vancouver childcare advocates has followed long established patterns concerning childcare and governments -- the argument has been based on child welfare, not the rights or welfare of women.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Sociology, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:

Abstract:
This collection summarizes the items on society, history and culture from Krapf’s famous dictionary which may be of some interest to today’s audience. The idea of arranging the sometimes idiosyncratic Swahili for modern use came up during preparations for the Krapf Workshop held on 11 September 2007 at Fort Jesus in Mombasa.1 The lemmas found in this first comprehensive Swahili dictionary were checked against Frederick Johnson’s Standard dictionary of 1939. In addition, the dictionary by Charles Sacleux of 1939 and the revised version of Krapf’s dictionary by Harry Kerr Binns (1925) served as sources of information. With the exception of those entries which Krapf had already marked with a question mark, all others were selected, which are not found in Johnson or which are described differently or in less depth than in Krapf\''s work.:1. Abstract:
The first empirical chapter analyses `party interaction' in issue competition. It shows that parties are responsive to the agendas of their competitors. Not all parties are equally responsive. Experience in government coalitions makes mainstream parties more `sensitive' towards their competitive environment whereas challengers push forward their own agendas and ignore systemic salience shifts. Furthermore, party leaders perceive the need for their party to respond to competitors more strongly than do activists. Activists are driven by policy-seeking motivations and would like to see the party focus on its traditional agenda. The second empirical chapter deals with the scope of parties' issue agendas. Why do parties sometimes offer a broad agenda to voters, whereas at other times they confine their policy appeals? Challenger parties seek to change the political status quo by focusing on a few issues only. Mainstream parties distribute their attention across a wide range of issues. Moreover, mainstream parties change the scope of their agenda when after electoral losses or when excluded from office. This depends on intra-party politics. Leaders seek to satisfy vote- and office-seeking motivations and `appeal broadly', activist want the party to `speak to the base'. The third empirical chapter deals with innovations in political issue-markets. It examines how parties respond to the pressure to address new issues. This chapter examines the impact of electoral support for green, far right and Eurosceptic parties on the issue agendas of other parties. In addition to green and far right support, Eurosceptic party success also provokes other parties to adjust their salience strategies. This effect is conditional: if Eurosceptic parties regard European integration issues as particularly important, other parties adapt and shift salience to this issue dimension. For green and far right parties such a conditional effect is absent.

Bland, Susan L. "Agenda-Building in Local Land-Use Issues: Blacksburg Versus the Big Box." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32158.

Full text
Abstract:
Like other communities across the country, Blacksburg, Virginia, has struggled with land-use policy, planning, and growth issues. This struggle intensified when town residents discovered a Walmart store might be included in a new retail development project. Local interest groups quickly formed, establishing different perspectives concerning the issue, while a Blacksburg Town Council member introduced an ordinance that would give the town the power to halt plans for the store. This measure became the focal point of the conflict, and groups both supporting and opposing it worked aggressively to gain community support for their respective sides of the issue. Using Cobb and Elderâ s (1983) agenda-building framework, the goal of this thesis is to examine the ways various groups involved in a local land-use conflict defined, and sometimes redefined, their messages to town residents in an effort to expand the issue beyond the core members of the groups to gain more widespread support. The results of these efforts are also evaluated. A case study was conducted incorporating interviews with some of the key members of the interest groups involved in the conflict and discourse analysis to examine group messages generated during the controversy. This study found that the way an issue is defined could influence its progression and play an important role in its resolution. It also highlights definitive times during an issueâ s evolution that are critical to its progression. These findings demonstrate some of the benefits that can result from integrating effective issue management strategies into a communication program.<br>Master of Arts

Nordholm, Elin, and Anette Björkstrand. "To issue or not to issue a going concern opinion : A study of factors and incentives influencing auditors’ ability and decision to issue going concern opinions." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-226641.

Full text
Abstract:
If auditors question a company’s ability to continue existing, they should issue a going concern opinion in the audit report. Whether or not auditors will issue a going concern opinion depends on auditors’ ability to identify going concern problems, as well as their decision whether or not to issue going concern opinions. In Sweden, the going concern accuracy rate has been low compared to other countries. The aim of this study is therefore to analyse whether it is auditors’ lack of ability to identify going concern problems or their decision not to issue a going concern opinion, or perhaps both, that could explain the relatively low accuracy rate. Interviews with four auditors from the Big Four audit firms and four CFOs from middle sized companies were conducted. The results show that there are factors speaking both for and against auditors’ ability to identify going concern problems, why we cannot say for sure whether auditors’ lack of ability to identify going concern problems could be an explanation to the relatively low accuracy rate. The results do however reveal that auditors actively make decisions not to issue going concern opinions to their clients as much as possible, which could explain the relatively low accuracy rate.

Robert, John M. "The Issue with Latino Voter Turnout: How Does the Issue of Immigration Affect Latino Voter Turnout?" Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500164/.

Abstract:
In this study, I investigate how the issue of immigration affects Latino voter turnout. I hypothesize that U.S. Latino citizens who view immigration as highly important and helpful to the United States will be more likely to turn out to vote in midterm and presidential elections. In addition to a contextual analysis on elections in Arizona and California, I perform a probit regression analysis on survey data from Pew Hispanic's 2004 National Survey of Latinos on Politics and Civic Participation. The results are mixed with respect to the initial expectations. While respondents who view immigration as important and helpful are more likely to turn out than those who view immigration as important and hurtful, the results suggest that respondents who find immigration as unimportant may not be less likely to turn out. Further, there are some differences between Latino subgroups, although these differences are minor. Ultimately, the hypotheses presented in this study find moderate support.

Denna punkt kommer att klargöra den oenighet som förekommer mellan medlems staterna, vilket ännu än gång har resulterat i det dröjsmål som uppstått i att kunna indentifiera våldtäkt som ett krigsbrott.</p><br><p><strong>Why haven’t the UN been able to recognise rape as a weapon of war?</strong></p><p>The thesis enlightens the usage of rape in war and the consequences this has brought on women who have been subjected to rape. The bulk of the information is taken from various articles, documents and journals and the method used is of a qualitative nature. The thesis sheds light upon women’s rights in the international arena and questions why it took so long (almost 50 years) for the United Nations (UN) in addressing rape as a war crime within international law.</p><p>The first part of the thesis will present various theories that elucidate the word sexual violence and more accurately ‘rape’ in the context of war. The second part generates the judicial part that will depict the difficulty for the international community to address rape as a war crime within international law.</p><p>Furthermore the thesis takes the approach in presenting obstacles faced by the UN, within the framework of human rights, to handle delicate issues such as rape and sexual violence. Since rape is, to a large extent, complicated and a broad concept, and since it falls under the category of women’s rights and under human rights, the thesis will explain reasons behind the dawdling and the hurdles faced by the UN in accepting rape under the category of war crime.</p><p>The third part of the thesis will present possible predicaments that are unmanageable for the UN. Some possible issues that the thesis has touched upon, is cultural diversity and differing opinions among the member states which has resulted in lack of consensus. Furthermore, the study will present the notion of women’s rights, and question if they are part of human rights. The thesis will also discuss the dual role of the UN and its struggle for the past decade to uphold its role both as an intergovernmental as well as a transnational body. Lastly the thesis will enlighten sovereignty that each state must enjoy. Sovereignty has resulted in lack of agreement among the member states which again has caused delay in recognising rape as a war crime.</p>

Abstract:
This thesis presents a study on how fourth graders can learn and use metaphor to create meaningful and expressive artworks. It is intended to investigate how students can understand the idea of metaphor and how they can use it to illustrate their own thoughts and ideas within their artworks. Jean Piaget believes much abstract thinking does not occur until the Formal Operations Stage of eleven to thirteen years of age. This study sought to question the ideas of Piaget by introducing the abstract thought of metaphor to fourth graders who are at the approximate age of nine. It set out to demonstrate that students may understand the idea of metaphor while applying it to create meaningful artworks that demonstrate their own opinions, thoughts and beliefs. Concepts about metaphor were introduced to the students through a number of interactive lessons to develop their ability to implement metaphor into their own artworks. This unit taught students how to interpret metaphor and apply the use of metaphor to their own artworks.

Abstract:
Cette thèse vise à tester ces hypothèses par le biais de trois articles empiriques et d’un article de synthèse situé en annexe<br>This thesis topic is the green bond market and the incentives pushing firms into issuing this new type of security. Three key hypotheses were stated to explain the motive for a firm to issue a green bond. The first hypothesis (“long-term value creation”) asserts green bond issuers invest in green technologies to generate long-term value. The second hypothesis (“delegated philanthropy”), professes stakeholder pressure engenders the fundamental reason for a firm to issue green bonds. The third hypothesis (“agency view”) contends that managers of green bond issuing firms serve their own objectives. This thesis aims at testing these hypotheses through three empirical articles and a synthesis article added in the appendix

Timoner, Lledó Pere. "Rationing problems: Extensions and Multi-issue analysis." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/398016.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns itself with the study of situations in which a group of agents lay separate claims to a scarce resource. These situations are as old as the discipline of economics itself; indeed, a number of ancient documents including the works of Aristotle, the essays of Maimonides and the Babylonian Talmud address this very old problem. Despite the ancient nature of these texts, these situations were not tackled formally until the early eighties by O'Neill (1982), who provided an extremely simple mathematical model to explain a wide variety of economic problems, including, among others, the assignment of taxes, bankruptcy, the distribution of emergency supplies and cost-sharing of a public good. In general we can refer to these situations as problems of adjudicating conflicting claims or (standard) rationing problems. The present study seeks to enrich rationing problems from different perspectives: * In Chapter 2 we introduce an extension of the standard rationing model, in which agents are not only identified by their respective claims to some amount of a scarce resource, but also by some exogenous ex-ante conditions (initial stock of resource or net worth of agents, for instance), other than claims. The essence of this chapter is that those agents who have less (with a worse ex-ante condition) should somehow be given some priority over those who have more (with a better ex-ante condition). Within this framework, we define a generalization of the constrained equal awards rule and provide two different characterizations of this generalized rule. Finally, we use the corresponding dual properties to characterize a generalization of the constrained equal losses rule. * In Chapter 3 we present a variant of the multi-issue rationing model, where agents stake their claim for several issues. In this variant, the amount of resource available for each issue is constrained to a quantity fixed a priori according to exogenous criteria. The aim is to distribute the amount corresponding to each issue while taking into account the allocation for the remaining issues (issue-allocation interdependence). We name these problems constrained multi-issue allocation situations (CMIA). In order to solve these problems, we first reinterpret some single-issue (standard) egalitarian rationing rules as a minimization program based on the idea of finding a feasible allocation that lies as close as possible to a specific reference point. We extend this family of egalitarian rules to the CMIA framework. Specifically, we extend the constrained equal awards rule, the constrained equal losses rule and the reverse Talmud rule to the multi-issue rationing setting, which are found to be particular cases of a family of rules, namely the extended α-egalitarian family. This family is analysed and characterized by using consistency principles (over agents and over issues) and a property based on the Lorenz-dominance criterion. * Finally, in Chapter 4 we consider how to solve a rationing problem in which the resource cannot be directly assigned to agents. We propose a two-stage procedure in which the resource is first allocated to groups of agents and then divided among their members. We name these situations decentralized rationing problems. Within this framework, we define extensions of the constrained equal awards, the constrained equal losses and the proportional rules. We show that the first two rules do not preserve certain essential properties and prove the conditions under which both rules do preserve those properties. We characterize the extension of the proportional rule as the only solution that satisfies individual equal treatment of equals. Furthermore, we prove that the proportional rule is the only solution that assigns the same allocation regardless of whether the resource is distributed directly to agents or in a decentralized manner (with agents grouped). Finally, we analyse a strategic game based on decentralized rationing problems in which agents can move freely across groups to submit their claims.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to provide an evaluation of the property aspect of the Cyprus problem. The &#039<br>property issue&#039<br>is an important aspect of the problem because it concerns the individual human rights and interests of a large population on both sides of the island. Following an introduction and a description of the historical backgroundof the island, there will be a basic account of the Cyprus conflict in order to have a perspective on the disagreement. The bulk of the thesis is then formed by the problem of property in the overall disagreement and both sides&rsquo<br>arguments towards the issue. After detailing various peace negotiations in relation to the property issue, the involvement of the European Court of Human Rights in the issue will be discussed, including the most recent developments which have since emerged

Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze the property issue in the Cyprus conflict from 1974 up to 2012 based on historical and legal factors. First of all, the historical background of the Cyprus conflict will be evaluated with its different dimensions. After the EU and UN&rsquo<br>s involvement, the conflict internationalized and regarding the geostrategic importance of the island with the security concerns in the Middle East region the core of today&rsquo<br>s conflict became the property issue. In this respect, especially both the Turkish and Greek Cypriots proposals about property issue will be detailed one by one. Following that, based on these proposals the Turkish and Greek Cypriots cases to the ECHR about property issue will be analyzed. In the light of these the overall solutions to the Cyprus conflict will be evaluated.

Abstract:
As the Internet evolves and security attacks become more sophisticated, security has become one of the most challenging issues for website development and maintenance. Oracle Education Foundation (OEF funded by Oracle Corporation) maintains 7000 websites in ThinkQuest Library. These websites are developed by elementary school students, with PHP, Perl, and MySQL technologies. Because they have insufficient knowledge in website security, their websites may contain security issues and are hard for OEF to maintain. The purpose of this thesis is to seek an efficient and accurate solution to clean up the website security issues in ThinkQuest Library. The thesis consists 3 parts: improvement of Apache web server security configuration; summarizing methodology of manual fixing vulnerabilities and developing a simple script tool for security issue detection and cleaning up. These achievements can prevent illegal operations and attacks on the websites in ThinkQuest web server.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a novel approach to the instruction scheduling problem for dynamic issue processors. Our approach aims at generating an instruction sequence with a low register pressure and a high level of Instruction-Level Parallelism (ILP) exploitable by the dynamic issue mechanism of the processor. Our objective is to improve the performance of the program by taking advantage of the out-of-order execution and register renaming mechanisms of the processor to reduce the amount of spill code introduced by the register allocator.<br>Our approach uses a traditional ILP scheduler to generate an initial schedule for the program, and then reorders its instructions to reduce the register pressure of the program. This reordering is performed carefully. to ensure that the dynamic issue mechanism of the processor is able to exploit from the reordered sequence as much parallelism as available on the original schedule.<br>We have proposed an approximate method to determine, for a given instruction sequence and a given instruction schedule, whether a particular dynamic issue superscalar processor can exploit from the sequence as much ILP as present in the schedule.
