Abstract:
Among the key issues that arise in research of cooperatives are their supposedly hybrid nature and how they are able to balance both social and economic goals. I contend that the concept of 'needs' has become an important differentiating factor for the cooperatives I studied in Emilia Romagna. Placing this concept centrally in an analysis of cooperative practice helps to reveal the interplay between various value systems, reaching beyond arguments of the degeneration of cooperatives or the reproduction of dominant models, which both assume a one-way flow of influence. The recent history of the cooperative movement in Italy shows that these institutions have developed along with changing conceptions of need, supported by broader social movements and value systems. The cooperative network is today of central importance, and seen as an egalitarian means to share ideals and drive local innovation. However, my research shows that the instrumentalisation of the concept of 'need' also naturalises certain aspects of capitalist practice and has consequences for the enactment of other values within the cooperative. For example, in one cooperative I examined, the focus on meeting the members' needs for work was important in justifying a decision to merge with another cooperative despite a decision-making process that was seen as less than entirely democratic. This orientation also justified the use of precarious labour, and the need to protect members' livelihoods helped to justify low pay for internships and municipal job placements, as opposed to furthering the cooperative values of equity and equality. While the cooperative workers desired an element of personal relations, this was sometimes seen to be at odds with the focus on production and the maintenance of jobs. The marketing of more ethical products with reference to their social added value highlighted the central role of individual consumer citizens in bringing about change, which also reinforced divisions within the cooperatives based on who was more or less able to make these choices. In conclusion, I argue that while 'needs', like 'added value', can unite social and economic concepts of value, this also naturalises certain aspects of capitalist practice, particularly in this case where employment emerges as the primary need to be met. This leads me to suggest that the focus on meeting needs, as opposed to focusing on achieving specific ideals such as democracy and equality, may not be as effective to create alternative practice.

The N-Body plasma simulation consists in calculating the Coulomb interaction between N charged particles. We adapted an N-Body “tree code” algorithm, successfully used in the gravitational case, for the simulation of plasma. So far, we have found two main applications which suits this technique particularly well. First, the expansion of a plasma into vacuum. In this kind of simulations, densities of very different order of magnitude have to interact. Some areas can have an hydrodynamic behavior whereas some others are filled by energetic particles following ballistic trajectories. Problems which take into account plasma-vacuum interface are almost impossible to study with common simulation techniques ( Vlasov, Fokker-Planck). The other application consists in simulating moderatly or strongly coupled plasma. It deals with many laboratory plasmas as well as astrophysical plasmas such as the convective zone of the sun. In coupled plasmas, close collisions between charges can not be neglected as it is done in most of the other simulation techniques. The N-Body technique allows the accurate description of the trajectory of each single particle and thus to take into account the strong deviations

Abstract:
Male and female emotional reactions to jealousy arousing situations were investigated. These reactions were studied with relation to subjects ' general and relationship needs. Subjects ' expressed emotions, their general needs, and their relationship needs were measured. The results indicated that: 1) Females express stronger emotions in a jealousy situation, however, the range of expressed emotions for both males and females is similar. 2) Although relationship needs correlated more strongly, than did the general needs, with the expressed emotions, R* values were not high enough to permit understanding or prediction of these emotions through relationship needs.

Abstract:
We carry objects from place to place in bags, all the while maintaining that they are trivial objects. If we categorize objects as mundane, then why do we carry them everywhere we go? I interviewed female students at the Claremont Colleges about what they carry in their bags. College women articulate many distinct reasons for carrying a bag and for carrying the items within that bag. My participants perceive the items they carry as mundane, and do not question the presence of those items in their lives. Yet they also claim to need the items they categorize as trivial. They perceive the need to carry items as natural, and so do not question that need. My project demonstrates the ways college women make objects seem trivial and make needs seem natural. Through ethnographic interviews, I highlight how things perceived as mundane have significance. Additionally, I show that carrying a bag and carrying objects enables college women to be prepared to care for the well-being of themselves and the people around them. Between perceptions of objects as inessential and perceptions of the functions of objects as superficial, college women find value in carrying items.

Varner, Samantha. "“It’s About Heart”: A Qualitative Study of Rural Family Physician Training Needs." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/603682.

Full text
Abstract:
A Thesis submitted to The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.
Efforts to reduce a chronic physician shortage and meet the needs of rural communities face long standing challenges such as physician recruitment and retention. While these topics have been researched at length, issues surrounding the contribution of training specifically geared toward the needs of the Southwest’s rural communities are not well understood. The goal of this investigation is to discuss with rural family physicians the realities of rural practice and to determine what, if any, skills and competencies are specific to rural family practice and that, if addressed in training, would increase the number of students and residents pursuing rural family medicine and increase the number of physicians in rural areas. Methods: Physicians throughout rural areas in the Southwest meeting the role of thought leader were interviewed. Chain sampling was used to generate diversity of ideas. Interviews were conducted in person or by phone using a semi‐structured format and a topic guide. Participants were asked to discuss what skills they feel are important to a successful practice in a rural community, the degree to which the competencies were covered in their residency training, and how having or not having these skills might affect job satisfaction and retention. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Transcripts were analyzed by a two person committee for repeating themes. Results: Seven major repeating themes were evident in the data. Of these residency training type, individual resilience, comfort with lack of resources, community were some of the most common and important to participants. Conclusion: This study has shown that the challenges to recruitment and retention of family physicians in rural areas are many and complex. These results combined with the extensive literature studying successful recruitment and retention programs demonstrates the enormous potential that exists in a multifactorial approach to rural recruitment and retention to meet the tremendous need for more family physicians in rural areas.

Lin, Zhi Ying. "Trends in aquaculture production and its role in meeting human protein needs." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4994.

Full text
Abstract:
Regional and global trends in aquaculture production, value and price are assessed for the last 30 years relative to trends in wild caught species. Based on data from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for aquaculture production, data is extracted for the first time to address regional (Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Oceania and Asia) trends in production focused on the top five aquaculture produced species. Previous uses of the database have largely focused on global production. Of the top five species (whiteleg shrimp Penaeus vannamei, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, common carp Cyprinus carpio, and giant tiger prawn Penaeus monodon), Asia accounts for most of the global production (with the exception of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar). The central issue considered in this thesis concerns the likelihood and capacity of aquaculture production of fish and shellfish protein for human consumption relative to that of exploited wild stocks. Over the last 30 years or so, aquaculture production has risen exponentially and captures of wild caught fish have now plateaued. The relative status, rearing practices, production and basic economic perspectives of the principle aquaculture produced species globally are compared with wild caught production. The principle finding is that total global aquaculture production will exceed that of commercial wild caught species by about 2015. The significance of this is discussed in terms of current views of environmental (e.g. pollution, disease and habitat degradation) and economic (e.g. production level, farm price, marketing economics, fixed costs (facility and equipment depreciation, loan interest, land lease, fixed wages), variable costs (cost of seed stock, feed, energy)) impacts of aquaculture. Similarly, these issues are considered for the fishing industry (e.g. fishing down the food web, likelihood of expansion of bottom fisheries into deeper waters, reduction of biodiversity, declining global catches). It is concluded that aquaculture is a necessity and that if current trends continue aquaculture production can more than supplement human fish protein needs even in the given context of the rapid growing population, but that in the long term aquaculture production will itself be substantially supplemented by “rebounding” wild fishery production.

Abstract:
There is a significant amount of literature on needs assessment group processes and distance learning. There is practically no literature on the affects of using distance learning technologies to facilitate needs assessment processes. This study takes a look at the participation of professionals in a needs assessment using distance learning technologies, the affect it has on their communication anxiety in small group settings using the Communication Anxiety Inventory, and their impressions of the process. Participants used a computer with internet connection and a telephone to take part in the assessment. Three small group needs assessments were conducted. Participants were administered a survey that measured their trait (typical) anxiety score, conducted through the needs assessment, and were administered a survey that measured their state (actual) anxiety score during the assessment and their impressions of the process. Those with low trait anxiety tended to experience an increase in anxiety in this environment while those with high trait anxiety had a decrease in anxiety. It was inconclusive as to whether or not anxiety was a factor in participants contributions to the group process. All participants were willing to participate in this type of needs assessment again. They found the assessment outcomes valuable and the method in which it was conducted convenient. This would seem to indicate that participants felt the impact of using 2-way audio and distance learning tools was minimal but a larger and more diverse study is necessary in order to make any generalizations.

Brassington, Sufang Li. ""It's like kindling a fire" : training student teachers about special educational needs and inclusive education at a university in China." Thesis, University of Reading, 2018. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/80304/.

Full text
Abstract:
By law, all school-age children and adolescents in Mainland China are entitled to nine years’ compulsory education, and for nearly 30 years a national policy that is called ‘Learning in Regular Classrooms’ (LRC) has been in existence to accommodate special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream schools. However, the policy and its relevant legislation is hardly known in China even among teacher educators at top universities, and the everyday practice of inclusion in China is less covered in the literature than from some other parts of the world. With its distinctly separated systems of ‘special education’ versus mainstream education, SEN training in China is, by default, not included in the mainstream teacher education programmes despite the legislation for LRC. There is a considerable amount of literature in Chinese; however, the majority is review literature. Empirical studies are scarce, and even scarcer are about teacher education for inclusive education. With regard to the preparation of teachers for mainstream education in China, very little is known in the empirical literature in terms of how SEN training impacts on student teachers’ understanding of inclusive education and how it affects their practice. The PhD study incorporated intervention training on inclusion and SEN, and provided the training as a blended-learning course to a group of 135 student teachers at a university in China. A mixed methods research design was adopted for the study: a repeated measures design survey before and after the intervention training, plus the participants’ reflections of the training sessions throughout the intervention, and live-chat interviews with 20 volunteers after the participants finished their teaching practice. Results from the quantitative data are consistent with those from the qualitative data, which proved the validity and reliability of the study. The findings evidenced the literature and contributed empirically to the research of inclusive education in China. Firstly, before the intervention training, the student teachers had very limited understanding of SEN and little awareness of inclusive education. Data from later stages of the study, and from their perspective, indicated that it was because SEN or inclusion was not included in their teacher education programme. Although a few of them took some courses on special needs, which were provided by the Department of Special Education in their university, the courses were on braille reading or sign language for special schools only. The participants also manifested little knowledge, or even an opposite understanding, of the legislation for inclusive education in China. Secondly, before the intervention, the student teachers manifested positive attitudes towards equal rights for all children, including those with SEN; however, their attitudes were more for providing special education for children with SEN, rather than inclusion and quality education for the disadvantaged in the mainstream setting. A substantial number of participants regarded SEN irrelevant to them. The overwhelming majority of the student teachers disagreed with mainstreaming children with SEN, and a considerable number of the participants saw SEN training as irrelevant to them. Thirdly, the findings demonstrated, during the process of and after the intervention training, a significant increase in the participants’ understanding of inclusive education and a more inclusive attitude with an enhanced readiness to take action. Their increased understanding and raised awareness was reflected in the strong empathy they displayed with the children with SEN they saw in the video clips both during the intervention and in their school observations afterwards. It was also reflected in their perceived retrospective experience with disability and SEN, as well as their refreshed perception of the provision in local schools. The differences in the participants confirmed a transformative process before, during and after the intervention training. Last but not the least, the qualitative results, which was the core data, proved the practicability of the approaches adopted in the study, including the blended-learning course as intervention, use of social media as easy and reliable platforms for training and data collection, critical reflection as a transformative process, and use of video clips as a form of virtue environment. In addition to the original contributions to knowledge, these characteristics are unique to the study, which also provide valuable recommendations for future work both in research about inclusive education, and in practice of teacher education as well. Limitations of the study were also discussed in the thesis.

Abstract:
One of the key findings of this thesis was the participants' perception of chronic pain impact. Participants' social-situational contexts, coping activities and help seeking approaches determined the degree of impact perceived in the experience of chronic pain. Experience of chronic pain impact was modified to varying degrees by engagement in coping activities e.g. physical and environmental and/or psychological and emotional, modifications and activities. Differences existed between those coping successfully or unsuccessfully as reflected in their overall coping approaches and/or strategies e.g. "active" or "passive". These approaches had positive or negative consequences for the process of adjustment. Expectations of GPs and primary care services were low. Actual experiences of consultations often contrasted with the ideal. Unmet needs and increasing frustration over repeated failed treatments was reported. Many participants moved on to seek help outwith the NHS e.g. CAM, and/or developed personal coping approaches and strategies. Others continued to consult whilst still believing that their GPs' neither did not care nor could not help them. These participants were amongst the most dependent and least evolved in their personal coping. Several typologies emerged from the thematic inductive analysis e.g. coping and consultations styles. Within these typologies, important socioeconomic differences were identified in the participants' ability to adapt e.g. to modify pain impact by developing successful coping strategies, gaining satisfactory health care treatment and obtaining health professional cooperation in or outwith the NHS. Thus, inequalities in pain experience and access to effective treatments were identified.

Cleavinger, Arthur. "Need for Cognition Scale: A Study of its Psychometric Properties and its Ability to Predict Academic Achievement." TopSCHOLAR®, 1990. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1897.

Full text
Abstract:
The psychometric properties of the Need for Cognition Scale (NCS; Cacioppo & Petty, 1982) were investigated in two studies with independent samples of undergraduates at Western Kentucky University. In the first study (N = 379), the internal consistency and factor structure of the NCS were examined, and the NCS was compared to the Achievement subscale of the Personality Research Form (Jackson, 1974) and the State-Trait Curiosity subscale of the State-Trait Personality Inventory (Speilberger, 1979). Also, the possibility of differences in “need for cognition” attributable to socio-economic status (i.e. the educational attainment of the subjects’ parents) were examined. The second study (N = 72) compared the NCS to the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R; Dunn & Dunn, 1981) and, in addition, investigated the possibility that the NCS could explain variance in American College Test (ACT) scores other than that explained by the PPVT-R alone. The findings indicated that the NCS is a reliable instrument in terms of internal consistency. In factor analyses, one primary and one lesser factor emerged. The first factor was interpreted as representing the enjoyment of thinking, which is consistent with the first factor described in previous factor analytic investigations (i.e. Cacioppo & Petty, 1982; Cacioppo, Petty, Kao, 1984). The weaker factor appeared to represent the “amount” of cognitive activity sought by the individual high in NCog. This factor corresponded to one described by Tanaka, Panter, and Winbourne (1988). The NCS correlated positively and moderately with the Achievement and Curiosity subscales. The analyses of SES differences in NCS scores indicate that there is a main effect for SES; the participants whose parents had fewer years of formal education had higher scores on the NCS. In the second study, the NCS correlated moderately and positively with the PPVT-R; however, the NCS did not account for variance in ACT scores which was significant and unique to that accounted for by PPVT-R scores.

Crowley, Annie Rose. ""It's our anxiety that keeps them locked up" : protection for whom? : responding to the needs of 'at risk' young women in Scotland." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30975/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis critiques the constructions of girls and young women who are in, or are considered ‘at risk’ of, secure care or custody by exploring the ways in which they are explained and understood by the practitioners who work closely with them. The research was shaped by feminist concerns and aims, and involved in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 50 practitioners working with young women in a range of settings related to criminal justice in Scotland: prison, secure care, social work, and third-sector community services. A key concern of the thesis was to contribute to the growing body of knowledge and understanding about these ‘at risk’ young women. The work that exists in the Scottish, and wider UK, sector offers rich insights into different aspects of the experiences of this marginalised population, but very little of this is focused upon the role of the practitioner, or on practice that is conducted with this group of young women. In adding to this under-researched area, the thesis makes several contributions. Firstly, it supports the work of other feminist scholars through adding to the limited body of UK-specific knowledge regarding young women’s pathways into criminal justice contact. Secondly, it contributes to feminist concerns regarding the different and changing modes of social control to which young women are subjected, finding that practitioner contribution of knowledge to such discourses can serve to exacerbate the responsibility that is placed upon them in working with these young women. Thirdly, the thesis details the aspects of working practice that practitioners viewed as key to their work, and by doing so, gives context to understanding why so many practitioners describe finding young women a ‘difficult’ group with whom to work. Lastly the thesis contributes by its exploration of the personal experiences of practitioners in conducting their work, and the working environment and conditions surrounding these, which are framed in the thesis as gendered emotional labour. The thesis makes the argument that practitioners often experience difficulties not only because they are faced with hearing about or experiencing distressing stories, but because of the precarious situations that many work within, and because of the ways in which gendered risk and gendered vulnerability act as tools of governance, leaving them anxious and uncertain about their own ‘risky decisions’ in these insecure work environments.

Zhao, Chao. "Aging in China and its impact on vehicle design." Queensland University of Technology, 2008. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/26962/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study contributes to the growth of design knowledge in China, where vehicle design for the local, older user is in its initial developmental stages. Therefore, this research has explored the travel needs of older Chinese vehicle users in order to assist designers to better understand users’ current and future needs. A triangulation method consisting of interviews, logbook and co-discovery was used to collect multiple forms of data and so explore the research question. Grounded theory has been employed to analyze the research data. This study found that users’ needs are reflected through various ‘meanings’ that they attach to vehicles – meanings that give a tangible expression to their experiences. This study identified six older-user need categories: (i) safety, (ii) utility, (iii) comfort, (iv) identity, (v) emotion and (vi) spirituality. The interrelationships among these six categories are seen as an interactive structure, rather than as a linear or hierarchical arrangement. Chinese cultural values, which are generated from particular local context and users’ social practice, will play a dynamic role in linking and shaping the travel needs of older vehicle users in the future. Moreover, this study structures the older-user needs model into three levels of meaning, to give guidance to vehicle design direction: (i) the practical meaning level, (ii) the social meaning level and (ii) the cultural meaning level. This study suggests that a more comprehensive explanation exists if designers can identify the vehicle’s meaning and property associated with the fulfilled older users’ needs. However, these needs will vary, and must be related to particular technological, social, and cultural contexts. The significance of this study lies in its contributions to the body of knowledge in three areas: research methodology, theory and design. These theoretical contributions provide a series of methodological tools, models and approaches from a vehicle design perspective. These include a conditional/consequential matrix, a travel needs identification model, an older users’ travel-related needs framework, a user information structure model, and an Older-User-Need-Based vehicle design approach. These models suggest a basic framework for the new design process which might assist in the design of new vehicles to fulfil the needs of future, aging Chinese generations. The models have the potential to be transferred to other design domains and different cultural contexts.

Abstract:

I discuss the perspective we have on time and where we have our focus in the moment. Connecting it to the slow movement, making time for the moment that we are in, everything happens in the present.

Mostovicz, E. Isaac. "Understanding of consumers' needs for luxury : the mechanism of interpretation and its role in knowledge creation." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2008. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/2669/.

Full text
Abstract:
In a constant search for meaning we humans cannot stop interpreting the world we find around us (Kelly, 1955) and this act of interpretation in its turn affects the way we behave. And yet, in spite of the obvious importance of interpretation, researchers have tended to shy away from studying it. Interpretation itself is a paradoxical undertaking and is difficult to face up to, even though paradox is an intrinsic part of our human nature (Pinker, 2003). This act of evasion has negative consequences. Instead of acknowledging our interpretations as subjective and changeable, they are assimilated as ultimate and objective truths, thereby distorting our behaviours. The mechanism of human interpretation is based on two paradoxical premises: preference and attitude. In practice, interpretation tends to become contorted in futile attempts to relieve the inevitable tensions between these two premises. By examining aspects of philosophy, psychology and linguistics, this study argues that the tendency to substitute truth for subjective interpretation is persistent and damaging, but can in fact be resolved by applying the Janusian attitudinal mapping tool (Mostovicz, Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 2008). The mapping tool looks specifically at one dimension of the paradox distortion - consciousness, and offers a conscious, purposeful and dynamic interpretative process to relieve the contortion. The study then explores the difficulties and the benefits of dealing with paradox in a conscious, purposeful, and dynamic way, noting that these are precisely the challenges that truth-substitution seeks to evade. As human purpose is dynamic by its nature, this study rejects traditional static research paradigms and instead proposes a Janusian paradigm. Similarly, traditional static tools of enquiry have been adapted to reflect individual motivations, taking into account the learnings from dynamic personal construct theory (Kelly, 1955; Hinkle, 1965). The study examines the mechanism of interpretation by investigating perceptions of diamonds as luxury’. The study defines the six facets and four layers of effective, paradoxical interpretation and then presents two distinct pathways of interpretation — Theta and Lambda — to describe how individuals use this interpretive framework to achieve different life purposes. For Thetas, that life purpose centres on the need for affiliation and belonging, whereas for Lambdas, it centres on the need for challenge and personal achievement. As the role of interpretation is paramount to meaningful existence, the knowledge-building meta-framework which this study proposes can be applied universally to any field of enquiry and has already provided both theoretical and applied benefits, expanding the range and relevance of human knowledge

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa’s Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) as well as Growth Employment and Redistribution (GEAR) set ambitious goals for providing basic services to all, including housing and electrification. More efficient use of electrical energy has the potential to socially and politically support the goals of GEAR, particularly when it is targeted at low-income communities lacking adequate energy services. This study looks at electrical energy efficiency initiatives that the South African government has under taken on its own as well as in partnership with Eskom and to check if there is any economic value that the poor communities may benefit from these initiatives. The study will also check the awareness of poor communities of electrical energy efficiency. Various studies in the subject of energy efficiency in relation to the poor communities that have been done in the past will also be looked at in this study. While many energy efficiency programmes may have significant economic and environmental benefits from a social perspective, they may not be as attractive to utilities and consumers. That is why government intervention is important. As a result this study also examine (not in great depth) the policy options for overcoming the significant barriers to energy efficiency, and ways government can bridge the gap between what is good for society and what is good for the electricity industry. This study extends further on checking the awareness of energy efficiency by the poor communities and their current participation in the energy efficiency programmes.

Abstract:
A pilot study of noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) was conducted using NCR statements to (a) decrease target behaviors, (b) increase unprompted praise statements from the teacher and decrease reprimands, and (c) increase proximity to the participants by the teacher implementing NCR. Data were collected using a single-subject research design on two participants and one teacher. The target behaviors were physical and verbal aggression and inappropriate gestures. Teacher behaviors targeted with this study were praise statements, reprimands, and proximity to students. The participants included were one 16-year-old student with an emotional behavior disability, one 18-year-old student identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and an undergraduate student who was the teacher in this setting. The results were inconclusive regarding the students’ behavior due to confounding variables. However, regarding teacher behavior, the results demonstrated an increase in proximity and praise statements and a decrease in reprimands. This single-subject study provided empirical support that the NCR intervention positively altered teacher behavior.

Abstract:

Zambia's housing problems cannot be overstated. The current Constitution of Zambia does not recognise the right to adequate housing as a fundamental human right. It provides that the State shall endeavour to provide decent shelter for all but as a directive principle of state policy. In essence, as explicitly stated by the Constitution, the right to housing is not justiciable. This means that Zambians cannot approach any court, tribunal, administrative institution or entity to claim violation of the right to adequate housing. It is submitted that rights must be claimed if they are to be fully enjoyed. This thesis will discuss the importance and the need for a justiciable right to adequate housing in Zambia enshrined in the Constitution.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers money management within marriage from the point of view of women. It is based on a modified quota sample of 61 women who used a Health Centre in an inner city area of London. The method used was in-depth taped interviews supplemented by field notes. Most respondents received at least two visits. The interview schedule consisted of structured and semi-structured sections. Interviews were transcribed and a computer programme used for a content analysis of methods, attitudes to and feelings about financial organisation within the household. The quantitative data from the the structured sections of the schedule was coded and analysed using the SPSSx computer package. The theoretical framework used was a development of Amartya Sen's formulation of marriage as an area of co-operative conflict. The thesis suggests that married or co-habiting women reduced the number of areas of potential conflict by lowering their expectations and by avoiding aspects of financial organisation which had the greatest potential for conflict. Household money management was analysed in terms of level and source of income and of responsibility for collective domestic consumption. Expenditure was divided into a) frequently need items b) lump sums needed for bills and housing costs and c) saving At low income levels the norm was for women to be wholly responsible for all aspects of domestic collective consumption. At high income levels women who did not earn had little real responsibility while those who earned devoted a much larger share of their earnings to collective consumption than did their partners. At middle income level the two patterns met and there was a wider variety of patterns of money management. At all income levels it was very important for women to have a source of income of their own if they were to have a good chance of putting their own priorities for household consumption into practice.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the pari passu rule in English law. That rule, commonly understood, provides for equal (or pro rata) treatment of creditors belonging to the same class. The rule has been developed through both legislative and judicial activities over a long passage of legal history. This thesis will analyse the construct given to this rule by both legislators and judges, particularly, with reference to the extent it has been adapted to meet the needs of modern insolvency law. Such a perspective is especially acute in the light of recent reforms to the position of unsecured creditors introduced by the Enterprise Act 2002. The effects of the current financial downturn have furthermore focused attention on insolvency law from the perspective of corporate rescue or the treatment of creditors, and the increasingly global nature of commerce has meant that different jurisdictions face similar challenges in the enforcement of their insolvency laws. This work engages in a doctrinal study which contrasts the conception of the pari passu rule which is widely known and applied (though subject to criticism) with the actual operation of the rule in a private law and public policy context. Accordingly, the development of the rule is traced from its origins to its present application. An effort is made to determine the extent to which the judicial model of pari passu is substantiated in practice and commercial realities. It is argued that this model can be distinguished from the manner in which the rule actually applies in the context of managing the relationship between unsecured creditors within their class, and in the promotion of wider social interests. Regard is made of developments in insolvency law which may have diminished the view of the rules of insolvency distribution as an indicator of the social values of a legal system. The manifestation of the rule in ‘international insolvencies’ is one such development. An examination of the advent of a more flexible approach to pari passu in international insolvencies would thus be necessary. It will be shown that a revised construct of pari passu which more strongly accords with modern imperatives is needed. This study centres primarily on United Kingdom insolvency law, and draws on the experience of other (mainly common law) jurisdictions to demonstrate important issues in the enforcement of the pari passu rule and provide comparisons, where appropriate.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
Since gaining independence in 1990, Namibia has enjoyed a fairly stable economic performance, but its heavy reliance on its natural resources, especially its mineral resources, is at times worrisome. Historically, the country has depended primarily on diamond exports as a major source of foreign exchange earnings and state revenue. The contribution of diamond mining to government revenue has over the years declined from a high of N$1493 million in 2002 to the levels of N$821 million in 2007. Similarly, the contribution of diamond mining to the Gross Domestic Product has decline marginally from N$4.59 billion (16.9 percent) in 2006 to N$3.56 billion (13.1 percent) in 2007 respectively. It is evident that there has been a steady, but progressive decline in the proportional contribution of diamonds to the national income in relation to the other sectors of the economy. This decline can however not be directly attributed to a corresponding decline in the diamond production output, but perhaps due to a decline in diamond demand and lower prices. Based on the fact that diamond production and expansion thereof to offshore operations in particular will continue for years to come and still make significant contribution to the Namibia economy, this study attempts to formulate value addition strategies that could lead to the optimisation of the Namibia diamond economy potential, especially local benefication, as well as increased international competitiveness within the established world diamond markets. To this end, it evaluates the intricate supply and demand patterns in the world diamond market to understand how Namibia could position itself. The study found that there is a clear case for local diamond benefication as an economic imperative and that it is a feasible proposition. However, it must be approached cautiously and within a clearly defined and structured framework. It is recommended that Namibia should pursue the benefication of her unique gem quality diamonds in conjunction with external manufacturing experts and marketers in order to secure a bigger stake in the global diamond pipeline. To this end the government needs to formulate clear incentive strategies and packages for investors and also open the playing field for local manufacturers, without compromising existing relations and revenue streams. Furthermore, it is suggested that Namibia strive to maintain an amicable balance between rough exports and local benefication, whilst expanding the regulatory and enabling environment. Other proposals that will support local benefication and competitiveness of the Namibian diamond economy are diamond branding and marketing through already existing diamond marketing pioneers such as DTC International. Finally, Namibia needs to embark upon strategies to urgently increase its skills base and improve the productivity of its labour force in order to achieve the vision of a flourishing diamond benefication sector.

Abstract:
Single Player Roleplaying Game (SPRPG) is a popular genre among players as well as developers, with recent blockbuster titles such as Skyrim by Bethesda and Mass E↵ect 3 by Bioware. In recent years, an occurrence that have been gaining a lot of attention is the development of more advanced and vivid Artificial Intelligence (AI) within these SPRPG and a lot of progress has been made towards making the Non-player Character (NPC) more vivacious and life-like. It is, however, still a common occurrence that NPCs wait around for the player to interact with them; never having a plan or agenda of their own. Their purpose seem to be to wait for the player and provide him or her with information, bartering or a quest. This could result in a game environment that feels static and lifeless to some players and, thus, possibly become detrimental to the game experience. The main objective of this thesis was to implement a need-based system, resembling, to some degree, the one used in The Sims by Maxis, where NPCs get hungry, thirsty, sleepy and similar, and to test whether this system will enhance the game experience. If the NPCs of a SPRPG have needs of their own and therefore can not just wait around for the player to come to them, it may make the game experience more life-like and dynamic. A need-based system that allows the designer to define a set of needs for each NPC, was implemented using the Aurora Toolset for Neverwinter Nights by Bioware. The system was then tested by allowing a number of people play a custom module for Neverwinter Nights twice: once with the system in place and once without, then answering questionnaires regarding their experience. The results show, unanimously, that this prototype did enhance the game experience. Though this was a small module and only a prototype, it does indicates that the use of a need-based system might indeed enhance the dynamic and vivacity of a SPRPG.

Purpose:         To examine & identify how Corporate Social Responsibility affects employee retention as well as to determine & evaluate the relationship between CSR and employee retention. Method:         This thesis is based on the deductive approach which leads to quantitative data analysis through a cross-sectional time horizon in form of a rating question survey. The entire research is developed on Mark Saunders, Philip Lewis and Adrian Thornhill’s (2008) onion model. Conclusion:    Internal CSR, together with HRM, is influencing employee satisfaction through policies and strategies that are directed at employees and adapted to employees’ individual preferences. These preferences were identified in the form of needs and motivating & hygiene factors. The findings suggest, that even when high employee satisfaction is achieved, employee retention intention is not guaranteed. CSR, therefore, has a direct effect on employee satisfaction but not necessarily on employee retention.

Abstract:
Background: Short-term interventions involving video-feedback have been found to be effective in enhancing parental sensitivity in maltreating families'. Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a relationship-based intervention in which clients are guided to reflect on video clips of their own successful interactions. Aims: This research aims to explore the experiences of parents participating in a VIG programme and the impact of VIG on parental sensitivity and attunement, mind-minded interactions and parental mentalisation in families where there are concerns about child neglect. Sample: Four parent - child dyads were recruited during VIG programmes carried out by the NSPCC in Northern Ireland under its 'Neglect Theme'. Methods: A multiple-case study design was used, with qualitative and quantitative methods employed. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with parents within two weeks of the programme completion and analysed using Thematic Analysis. Recordings of parent - child interactions and shared reviews from three phases across the VIG programme were collected. Video analysis was conducted on parent - child interactions to record number of attuned, discordant and . missed responses, and number of mind-minded interactions. Video analysis was conducted of twenty minutes of the shared reviews to record the number of parental mentalisation comments. Results: Parents reported that VIG enhanced their sense of self as parents and their relationships with their children. Practical and interpersonal aspects of VIG were identified as explanations for its success. Quantitative data failed to provide substantial evidence for the impact of VIG on parental sensitivity and attunement, mind-minded interactions and parental mentalisation. Conclusions: Practical and interpersonal aspects of VIG explain its efficacy as an intervention to improve relationships in families where children's needs are being neglected.

Abstract:
With global competition becoming a key concept in the majority of companies worldwide, it is necessary for organisations to develop operations strategies that enable them to meet their customers‘ needs. Organisations will never be capable of reaching future goals without their customers. For this reason it is imperative for organisations to identify what competitive factors are required by the market, and which performance objectives are needed in order to increase the competitiveness of the organisation. In this research, Chapters 1 and 2 were used to identify the main and subproblems of the research, to delimit the research and to provide literature background to operations strategies and related operations topics. The empirical study in Chapter 3 was used to gather information pertaining to the specific requirements of ESA’s customers, and the operations performanceof ESA. Chapter 4 was used to analyse the data gathered from the empirical study. From this analysis it was possible for the researcher to identify the specific requirements of ESA’s customers and the operations performance of ESA. Chapter 5 was used to provide recommendations to bridge the performance gap between the customer requirements and the operations performance of ESA. By effectively implementing all of the recommendations suggested in this research, ESA will be able to improve its operation performance and meet the specific requirements of its market and its customers.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to uncover the synoptic weather circulation pattern which is associated with the occurrence of needle ice, snowfall and the zero-curtain effect. The method of study was done through an intensive ground climate measurement campaign from April 2008 to May 2009 with a temperature logger installed throughout the recording period. Results from data analyses indicate that the complex changes in climate parameters may lead to an equally complex response in terms of spatial soil frost dynamics and its direct and indirect effects on soil sediment displacement and ecosystem dynamics. Field evidence in the study suggests that on Marion Island needle ice developed in temperatures as high as -0.2 ºC in strong winds. This confirms that the wet environment of Marion Island, which is dominated by diurnal soil frost is fundamentally different from seasonal frost and permafrost environments. The scoria material is susceptible to needle ice growth and the compacted soil alters the micro-climatology of the affected area making it more susceptible to the formation of needle ice. Soil moisture for needle ice formation and growth is provided by the misty conditions associated with the advent of the cold front (pre-cyclonic). Furthermore, observations of needle ice on Marion show that needles are mostly clear with no sediment inclusion. This is indicative of needle ice formation that has not been interrupted by a shortage of moisture. The zero-curtain effect on Marion Island can occur either as a response to the thawing of the soil after the seasonal freeze. The synoptic assessment of snowfall on Marion Island indicates that; snowfall is associated with the passage of a cold front linked to a strong meridional system of low pressure just south of the island.

Abstract:
A web portal that publicly displays user-submitted content requires administration in order to ensure undesired content, that is potentially malicious, is excluded. Other administrative aspects that come with a web portal with user-submitted content include user-support and service maintenance. This project was formed in part to develop a new version of an existing web portal for advertising degree projects. The goal of the project is to develop an improved version of the old web portal and ensure that the new version requires as little manual administration work as possible. As how to minimize administration for this type of service was deemed unknown, this thesis takes an inductive approach to exploring how to minimize administration for a web portal with user-submitted content. This thesis results in the presentation of a web portal with new functionality and modified in aspects that the product owner wanted improved. The visual layout is presented along with information on what parts were reused from the old version of the web portal. Design choices that were made with a focus on minimizing administration and design choices in general that were deemed important are presented and motivated. Finally, the thesis concludes that possible areas where administrative work could be reduced depends heavily on the requirements set on the web portal and that the methods used in this thesis were successful in identifying administrative work aspects that can be reduced or eliminated on the web portal developed in this project. It is also concluded that sufficiently advanced automated systems could be useful in reducing the administrative work needed by any type of web portal with user-submitted content.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the prosocial effects and social psychological pleasures of computer game play. It argues that much of the research on this area has focused on the search for negative effects, ignoring possibilities of the positive. Based on both email and face to face interviews with players of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the thesis considers their testimony alongside Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to reveal numerous benefits that engagement with the computer game may bring. These benefits include not only the prosocial - the strengthening of relationships within families and between friends - but also the more deeply psychological, helping to satisfy needs for development and growth. The thesis argues that such findings not only reveal a great deal about those studied but are also suggestive in relation to the wider computer game audience. Furthermore, such findings draw attention to the fact that if the computer game - a cultural form becoming ever more ubiquitous - is to be understood in its entirety, then there is a need for further research on its prosocial and positive psychological effects. Finally, the thesis critically demonstrates the value of Maslow’s theory for Computer Game Studies and offers a methodology through which future research may be undertaken.

Steinmeyer, John Kenneth. "An Examination of John Burton’s Method of Conflict Resolution and Its Applicability to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict." Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6666.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper argues that the interactive problem-solving workshops created by political scientist John Burton and applied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by social psychologist Herbert Kelman, while not, as yet, resulting in a just and permanent peace agreement, are effective in resolving intractable conflict, and, if persistently used, can significantly help to produce such an agreement. This is done by closely examining two books of Burton and a series of articles by Kelman to describe their process; the characteristics of intractable conflict are also reviewed from the work of social psychologist Daniel Bar-Tal. It is then argued that the psychological elements of intractable conflict and the satisfaction of basic human needs are addressed in the interactive problem-solving workshops, exactly what is needed in intractable conflict. It is also suggested that the many outsider recommendations for the resolution of this conflict will not work because they do nothing to address the psychological elements. Recommendations are made to use the workshops to resolve disputes between the Hamas and Fatah political parties and various elements on the Israel side of the conflict; the top leaders of both sides of the conflict are also urged to participate in a workshop. This paper also notes that a fully completed peace agreement already exists in the form of the Geneva Initiative, assembled by Israeli and Palestinian persons exhibiting the qualities promoted by the workshops.
