Mental computation and estimation are topics we keep hearing about. Although mental computation is not a stranger to the history of mathematics education, estimation is a relative newcomer to the curriculum. The history of mental computation dates back to when arithmetic was first taught. Historically, it was emphasized bccause of its social utility—shopkeepers needed to “cipher” total of grocery bills quickly. The current emphasis on both mental computation and estimation has a different origin. As teachers, we want students to take advantage of whatever computatonal tool is most appropriate for the situation at hand. The design of an x-ray detector suitable for use in tomography must be optimized for the intended application. Recently, we have developed microtomography applications that require resolution of -1 micron in three spatial dimensions and -1% statistical accuracy in the reconstruction of attenuation coefficients for each cubic micron volume element in a .1 cubic mm specimen. X-ray detector design for these applications must take into account much more than just the demanding micron spatial resolution requirement. The detector must be optimized to take into account the physical properties of the specimen to be measured, the characteristics of the x-ray beam available to probe the specimen, signal to noise ratios needed in the reconstructed image and requirements of the data processing algorithm. In addition, the detector design should be sufficiently flexible to allow significant variation in the kinds of specimens that can be examined.

AbstractThe numbers of Indigenous students studying in health career courses at the tertiary level is low. This paper describes a forum conducted as part of a project of national significance which examines the solutions and barriers for Indigenous student entry to medical and other health science education. Small group discussions and observations were used to determine how a group of Indigenous students, school age and mature, became interested in a health career, what influenced them, their expectations and where they sourced information. The initial design of the forum, based on other successful non-Indigenous health career events, was deemed inappropriate. When an Indigenous educator intervened, and used a more culturally appropriate approach, the engagement of the Indigenous students increased. The importance of culturally relevant health career promotion is a vital part of a complex series of actions needed to increase the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students into health science careers.

Without clinical expertise, practice risks becoming tyrannised by evidence, for even excellent external evidence may be inapplicable to or inappropriate for an individual patient.?1 (p. 72) I am a senior physiotherapist and clinical researcher and in the comparatively early stages of a sero-negative spondyloarthropathy that may well develop into full blown ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The severity of my symptoms was such that in 2005 I had to relinquish the full-time position I had held for 21 years and reduce my working hours to 12 hours per week in a nonclinical role. To set the picture of my symptoms at their worst, I was unable to sit for more than a few minutes a day because of severe axial pain, forced to do all work in kneeling, standing or lying positions, with social activities likewise restricted. In order to sleep I often needed strong analgesia and icepacks, only to wake 2?3 hours later. Life was pretty tough. After little response to conventional medications, I started a tumour necrosis factor a (TNF-a) blocker (Infliximab) in March 2007 with a significant and dramatic response. As well as markedly decreasing my pain and fatigue, and improving range of movement, function and quality of life, Infliximab has enabled me to commence some additional part-time work as a medical writer.

Healthcare provision in the UK is in a process of continual change. The structures and processes by which people with mental health problems and people with learning disabilities receive support from statutory services have been, and continue to be, subject to many and varied strategic, policy and professional influences. Integrated and collaborative ways of working between generalist (‘primary’) and specialist (‘secondary’) care have become eroded over time and yet they may be needed more than ever. In this editorial we encourage a collaborative approach between practitioners in generalist and specialist care in studying and developing three strands of work: policy and strategy; training; and professional behaviour. Above all, we advocate strongly for a renewed and dynamic dialogue between psychiatrists and general practitioners in working together to provide high-quality mental healthcare.

Barotrauma as a result of rapid decompression has been recorded as the most common injury among fish captured in the tailrace of hydropower dams in Brazil, with catfishes representing the majority of them. Nevertheless, studies investigating barotrauma on catfish are scarce, with the majority determining dose–response curves and thresholds of pressure changes for nektonic species, such as salmonids. Experiments conducted with Pimelodus pictus showed that the current hypo-hyperbaric chambers used to study barotrauma in nektonic species can have limitations when applied to benthic groups. The negative buoyancy showed by the catfish prevented the definition of the acclimation pressure of the fish before exposure to decompression and, therefore, the method had to be adapted to allow the calculation of the ratio of pressure change (RPC). The adaptation involved anaesthetising the fish, which added a potential bias to the experiments. Therefore, new approaches deemed to be needed to complement barotrauma studies with benthic fish. We aimed to discuss the limitations observed for studies with benthic species and present potential methods to overcome them. The diversification of approaches for barotrauma studies with benthic species is critical to provide information for the development of mitigation and new turbine designs that would improve protection of this group.

Most theories of personality development posit that changes in life circumstances (e.g. due to major life events) can lead to changes in personality, but few studies have examined the exact time course of these changes. In this article, we argue that time needs to be considered explicitly in theories and empirical studies on personality development. We discuss six notions on the role of time in personality development. First, people can differ before the event. Second, change can be non–linear and discontinuous. Third, change can be reversible. Fourth, change can occur before the event. Fifth, control groups are needed to disentangle age–related and event–related changes. Sixth, we need to move beyond examining single major life events and study the effects of non–normative events, non–events, multiple events, and minor events on personality. With the advent of mini- and micrografting in hair transplantation, one has been able to create a more natural, refined hair line. When one considers the time and tedium, as well as the man hours needed to accomplish these results, it's only natural for one to look to simplify and speed the process. Our objective was to find an instrument that would easily implant micrografts and remain affordable. Our micrograft implanter, when used in an assembly line fashion, has decreased our operative time and improved our results. Additionally, we feel that our process is less traumatic than standard micrograft placement techniques.

If we believe social media, newspapers, and even some of our best friends and colleagues, the war over standard usage is on. As with many wars, the opposing sides seem to be entrenched in differing ideological positions and many of the battles seem to take place over the most unstable, smallest bits of territory - such as the Oxford comma, singular they, or split infinitives. In this ongoing war, possessive apostrophes have attracted particularly aggressive forays. For example, when some English cities proposed removing apostrophes from street signs, various news outlets published headlines such as, ‘It's a catastrophe for the apostrophe in Britain’ (NBC, 31 January, 2009), ‘Dropped apostrophes spark grammar war in Britain’ (New York Times, 16 March, 2013), and ‘“It's pandering to the lowest common denominator”: Anger as Cambridge bans apostrophe from street names’ (Daily Mail, 18 January, 2014). Explaining Birmingham's ban, one city councillor was not that much less sensational, stating that apostrophes ‘denote possessions that are no longer accurate, and are not needed’ and that ‘they confuse people. If I want to go to a restaurant, I don't want to have an A-level (high school diploma) in English to find it’ (NBC).

Abstract:

AbstractPhylogenies of representative genera based on 3 molecular markers are presented. These data are combined with previously published morphological data (Lingafelter & Konstantinov 2000). The results of separate 28S-D2 rRNA, combined analysis of molecular data and molecular data combined with morphological characters for 27 genera indicate monophyly of Galerucinae s.s. and paraphyly of Flea Beetles. These results also mean that our molecular data do not support the Flea Beetles as a tribal ranking (Alticini) within the Galerucinae, nor is it's status as a separate subfamily (Alticinae) as has been proposed by other researchers. We suggest that addition of more independent characters is still needed to resolve the question of the relationships between the Flea Beetles and the galerucines.

The purpose of this research is to facilitate the process of sending, searching, and integrating data and documents. With electronic-based office mail is expected to reduce paper usage. Application development methods using the SDLC method consist of system investigation, analysis, design environments, testing, training, and transition, operation and maintenance.Electronic-based office mail is able to solve many problems regarding the mail system such as speed of delivery, filing, and searching of documents. By utilizing the database system, documents can be stored well and integrated. It's cannot eliminate the use of paper. The main reason is the habit of employees needed paper evidence in their work

An-Nur and Darussalam Boarding School use well water for bathing, washing and latrines (MCK). However, well water contains high levels of iron and manganese. Therefore, it's needed clean water treatment technology. The water treatment system consists of aeration, adsorption, and filtration. The purpose of PKM is to provide clean water for partners. The method is a participatory and collaborative method whereby partners participate in planning, socialization and training, and operation and maintenance of water treatment plant. The PKM product is easy-to-use water treatment plant and the processed water is odorless, not turbid and colorless or clear. The main key to the success of clean water treatment PKM in An-Nur and Darussalam Boarding School is good communication and smoothly between PKM team and partners.

AbstractThis study assesses the agricultural sector under the government of Kwame Nkrumah as a dynamic Cold War front. After Ghana's independence in 1957, Nkrumah asserted that the new nation would guard its sovereignty from foreign influence, while recognizing that it needed foreign cooperation and investment. His government embarked upon a development program with an emphasis on diversifying Ghana's agriculture to decrease her dependence on cocoa. Meanwhile, both the United States and the Soviet Union sought to establish footholds in Ghana through agricultural aid, trade, and investments. In the first years of independence, the Ghanaian state encouraged smallholder farming and American investment. Later, in a sudden change of policy, the government established large-scale state farms along the socialist model. This article brings to light the ways that Ghanaians in rural areas engaged with and interpreted the increasingly interventionist agriculture projects and policies of Nkrumah's government.

Background: Menstrual regulation is the aspiration of endometrial content within 14 days from the missed period or within 42 days from the last menstrual period having previous normal cycles. So embryonic implantation either can not occur or can not be maintained.This technique is also known as menstrual aspiration, menstrual extraction, interception and uterine aspiration.This technique was first developed in 1927. In spite of its safety and effectiveness, to some extent it is contributory to some minor and major complications. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the clinical presentation and outcome of the complication of menstrual regulation (MR). Materials and Methods:This cross sectional prospective study was done in Obs.&Gynae department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, from November 2008 to February 2009. This study was on MR complications, it's clinical presentation and outcome. The cases diagnosed by history, examination and investigation. Results: Total number of Gynaecology admission was 1680 out of which 5.71% was due to MR complications . 89.58 % were multipara . In 77.07% cases gestational age was between 7 to 9 wks, in 52.08% cases MR was performed in private chamber. 12.5% patients suffered from p/v bleeding,2.08% suffered from shock and acute abdomen due to visceral injury. In 9.37% cases required abdominal surgery . Death was recorded in 2.08% cases. Conclusion: To reduce the incidence of complications, contraceptive practice should be popular and available to the community and MR service should be used as back up service when needed. Abstract:

For a QA system it's very important to have a notion of vocabulary used in questions and for building correct answers. Especially, when a word represents a concept, one can use related lexical instances to understand it and further extend the knowledge by using the associated information. In this work, we suggest a process of building a knowledge base for such concepts as people, organizations, and places, and linking their instances to Wikipedia articles. We also develop a workbench for KB building. This workbench should efficiently support all features needed to collect necessary data and build the knowledge base. We have created 150,941 links to Korean Wikipedia for 2,394 instances of Korean vocabulary. This KB can be used in QA systems to extend questions, while the workbench can be used to build the KB itself.

The spirit of religion in the collective life is to create the beneficiaries for the adherents. But, the religious symbolism is no less important than religion in life, so that religious symbols are greatly needed by the people. Moreover, religious symbolism is sometimes treated more than to the religion itself. Maybe public passion towards religious symbols more powerful than passion towards religion itself. Because it's not uncommon religious symbols are used for a variety of interests outside the religious interests, for example economic interests, political interests, and so on.

Abstract: Full adder circuit is one among the fundamental and necessary digital part. The full adder is be a part of microprocessors, digital signal processors etc. It's needed for the arithmetic and logical operations. Full adder design enhancements are necessary for recent advancement. The requirement of an adder cell is to provide high speed, consume low power and provide high voltage swing. This paper analyses and compares 3 adders with completely different logic designs (Conventional, transmission gate & pseudo NMOS) for transistor count, power dissipation and delay. The simulation is performed in Cadence virtuoso tool with accessible GPDK – 180nm kit. Transmission gate full adder has sheer advantage of high speed, fewer space and also it shows higher performance in terms of delay. Keywords: Delay, power dissipation, voltage, transistor sizing.
