Abstract:
AbstractAs digitization advances, stationary retail is increasingly enabled to develop novel retail services aiming at enhancing efficiency of business processes ranging from in-store logistics to customer shopping experiences. In contrast to online stores, stationary retail digitization demands for an integration of various data like location information, product information, or semantic information in order to offer services such as customer shopping assistance, product placement recommendations, or robotic store assistance. We introduce the semantic Digital Twin (semDT) as a semantically enhanced virtual representation of a retail store environment, connecting a symbolic knowledge base with a scene graph. The ontology-based symbolic knowledge base incorporates various interchangeable knowledge sources, allowing for complex reasoning tasks that enhance daily processes in retail business. The scene graph provides a realistic 3D model of the store, which is enhanced with semantic information about the store, its shelf layout, and contained products. Thereby, the semDT knowledge base can be reasoned about and visualized and simulated in applications from web to robot systems. The semDT is demonstrated in three use cases showcasing disparate platforms interacting with the semDT: Optimization of product replenishment; customer support using AR applications; retail store visualization, and simulation in a virtual environment.

Abstract:
AbstractThe “Silicon Economy” is synonymous with a coming digital infrastructure (digital ecosystem) based on the automated negotiation, disposition, and control of flows of goods, enabling new, digital business models (not only) for logistics. This infrastructure requires and enables the trading of data without losing sovereignty over the data. It is the digital infrastructure and environment for the highly distributed AI algorithms along value networks. In contrast to oligopolistic developments in the B2C sector (amazon.com, AirBnB, Alibaba, Uber, etc.), the Silicon Economy is a federated and decentralized platform ecosystem, the basic components of which are made available to the general public as open source for free use.The Silicon Economy ecosystem is becoming an enabler of supply chain ecosystems in which goods, autonomously controlled by Artificial Intelligence (AI), undergo orchestrated processes according to the situation. This article focuses on the origins and potentials but also on the technological foundations and challenges of the transformation toward a Silicon Economy.

Abstract:
AbstractIn today’s competitive landscape, networked production plays a crucial role in enabling companies to create value and remain competitive. By integrating advanced logistics and supply chain processes, companies optimise resources through cooperation and dynamic arrangements. However, managing the emerging complexity requires a new and intelligent approach. Decentralised Technical Intelligence (DTI) is a response to this challenge. It refers to the distributed and autonomous intelligence embedded in interconnected systems, devices, and agents—involving both humans and machines. By combining the strengths of humans and artificial intelligence (AI), DTI creates a coordinated environment that enhances the overall system intelligence. This collaboration leads to greater autonomy and enables multiple DTI agents to operate independently within a decentralised network. To achieve advanced networked production with DTI, a roadmap will be established, encompassing building blocks that focus on transparency, cooperation, sustainability, seamless integration and intelligent network control. All building blocks are linked to a vision, value promise and development pathway. As networked production evolves, it gives rise to new business models and demands new skills and expertise. By following this roadmap, DTI unlocks its potential for advancement, creating value and fostering competitiveness.

Abstract:
A marked development in the last decade has been the growth of “virtual organizations” (or “extended enterprises”), where a network of service supplier and vendor firms cooperates to create customer value. One form of cooperation is described as business process outsourcing (BPO). A business process involves several interrelated activities performed with the goal of generating customer value. Because of the growth in e-collaboration tools, it is now possible for firms to outsource even core business processes to external vendors. Examples of processes typically outsourced include logistics, customer support, human resources, and back-office accounting functions. BPO and the value networks created by vendors and purchasers hold the promise of substantial business benefits associated with specialization and scale. These include reduced costs, greater business flexibility, and higher service quality. According to the Gartner Group, the world market for BPO services is likely to increase from $100 billion in 2002 to $173 billion by 2007(Gartner, 2004).

The environmental problems around the world are pushing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to implement strategies that include sustainable ecological systems, agile, lean, and environmentally friendly manufacturing, and adopting cost-effective and competitive strategies to protect their position in a competitive business environment. Operations carried out by MSMEs cannot be separated from the emergence of environmental impacts because every activity to generate value-added also generates waste. All supply chain management units contribute to environmental problems. This article presents the importance of adopting GSCM in achieving business process performance, which will also improve the performance of MSMEs. This study offers a conceptual framework for GSCM adoption, business process performance, and MSMEs performance. Digital transformation is a process in which entities make use of technology to improve their performance, reach, and guarantee better results. It is a structural change in organizations, giving an essential role to the technology. Digital transformation engages processes where organizational actors engage in digital innovation and transform their organizations in order to respond to change in their business and technology environments. Abstract:
Effective logistics largely contributes to the success of business through quick deliveries in minimum time and cost. Logistics is the process of getting material, product, and service where and when they are needed. When addressing the concept of sustainable logistics, it is important to consider the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental. Sustainable logistics is beyond going green and being environmentally friendly, it has an influence on manufacturing processes, starting from where raw materials are obtained, processes involved, use, and potential recycling of the product or service. In analyzing the problem of evaluating logistic operation performance, sustainability will be one among other criteria for evaluation. Selecting a logistics partner who cares about sustainability will help in achieving company’s strategy. The chapter discusses the concept of sustainability applied to logistics. From the main definition of the logistics system, which includes the flow of materials and information, to the goal of sustainable logistics, which includes increasing profitability and reducing the environmental impact. Sustainable development involves coordination between environment and economics to reach social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The chapter aims to help managers, practitioners, scholars, and students to understand the key attributes of sustainable logistics and supply chain in general.

Consequently, the discussion on economy-wide transition to net-zero is accelerating, with focus shifting from “if” to “when” and “how”, even for heavy industry sectors like steel, cement and chemicals. This makes it increasingly urgent to analyse not just whether it is technologically feasible t

Public procurement of goods and services contributes to about 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In the EU, public purchasing represents 15% of its GDP, acting as a major influencer on the market through the products and services acquired by governments from the local to national levels. The public sector has a role to play in leveraging this purchasing power to achieve the best societal value for money, particularly as we scramble to bend the curve of our planet’s warming. Globally, the construction and transport sectors each represent about 12% of government procurements’ GHG emissions.
