Abstract:
Autism is a neurodevelopment disorder that entails that an individual has a different way of perception, understanding and thinking than other people. The disorder gives a difficulty with social interaction and communication, difficulty to sort and process sensory input and gives a strong limited behavioural pattern. It’s common for individual on the autism spectrum to have specific demands for they need better visualization, clear instructions and punctual reminders. These specific demands can be met with technological devices. There is a large supply of cognitive aid, products, solutions and services that can help make everyday life easier for individuals with an impaired cognitive ability. This study examined how a high technological product – a tablet used in school environment by adolescence with autism. The participants evaluated their experiences around the use of the tablet. They also judged the tablets user-friendliness, design and effectivity as a support for personal growth.

McCowen, Tracey. "Emission Permits as a Monetary Policy Tool: Is it Feasible? Is it Ethical?" ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2017. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/811.

Full text
Abstract:
The price of emission permits is deemed too low to mitigate climate change. In three studies, policy approaches to pricing carbon in a market setting are examined. First, the emission permit market is analyzed comparatively to how the ethanol mandate impacted prices in the corn market. This leads to the realization that the marketization of carbon is more like a currency than a physical commodity. The next study examines emission permits as a monetary policy tool. Emissions correlate GDP output, thus central banks can use emission permits as forward guidance, as a means to optimize the price for climate change mitigation, and as an alternative to interest rates. Opinions of thought leaders are used to question the acceptability of emission permits as a monetary policy tool. The final study is an ethical analysis using deontology, utilitarianism and virtue ethics within a pragmatic philosophical context, analyzing carbon as a monetary policy tool. In order for carbon as a monetary policy tool to be considered ethically acceptable, it must satisfy the temporal, spatial and institutional dilemmas of climate change articulated in Stephen Gardiner’s Perfect Moral Storm. Under this ethical standard, it is found that using carbon as a monetary policy tool can help address these concerns, but not solve them alone. This research is presented using transdisciplinary methods which provide a unique and holistic approach to policy formation not yet presented in the literature. This research is relevant to policy makers in central banking, the IMF and World Bank.

Wu, Song. "IT tool for construction process management, process protocol toolkit." Thesis, University of Salford, 2004. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26970/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Latham (1994) and Egan (1998) reports identified fragmentation, poor co-ordination and communication as major weaknesses in the UK construction industry. The Generic Design and Construction Process Protocol has been developed to address these problems and help the industry to improve their business. The need for an IT solution to combat the obstacles and problems in implementing the Process Protocol in the industry has emerged. This PhD research focuses on developing an IT solution to support and help the implementation of the Generic Design and Construction Process Protocol to enable the fundamental change in the construction industry. The IT solution, named The Process Protocol Toolkit, aims to assist the creation of the process model and to manage the information of the project based on the Process Protocol framework. The Process Protocol Toolkit is composed of a Process Protocol Map Creation Tool and a Process Information Management Tool. The first tool will automate the process map creation process by using the Process Protocol as a framework and allow users to create and customise their specific project process map, and the second aims to manage and develop project information based on the project process. It will enable the construction managers to understand the construction process and facilitate the management of the construction process. The prototype of the Process Protocol Map Creation Tool is developed incorporating this research. Literature Reviews are used to understand the Process Protocol, process modelling and construction IT development. A questionnaire is employed to establish the IT usage and awareness within the industry. Information associated with the Process Protocol framework is modelled by a data modelling technique and transferred into a relational database. Subsequently, the data model is used in the development of the prototype of the Process Map Creation Tool to automate the process map production. A series of web based project information management systems are reviewed to identify the requirements of the project management system. The solution for knowledge integration with the Process Information Management tool is proposed for future development. The main contribution of this research is the establishment of the data model of the Process Protocol framework and the development of the Process Protocol map creation tool. It demonstrates how the Process Protocol framework can be customised and integrated into the project information system. The secondary contribution is the IT framework for knowledge based construction project information system. The framework of the system is demonstrated and validated through workshops and questionnaire. The concept of process driven project information system has also been taken by a software firm for their future product development.

Persson-Holmes, Paul, and Pontus Lyngsten. "IT in auditing : A descriptive study about IT-tool usage, IT knowledge, and the future digital environment for auditors." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-172383.

Full text
Abstract:
The audit industry is under a digital transformation where various IT-tools are being frequently used by auditors at different experience levels. It is almost impossible to perform an audit with good results without using any IT-tools. Therefore, pressure is put on audit firms, both Big 4 and Non-Big 4 firms to stay ahead or at least up to date in terms of the digital development, implementation and usage of IT-tools to not fall behind its competitors. Educating the audit team members in the different information technology systems (IT) will be of great importance so that auditors can utilize new technology and enhance audit quality. This study contributes with practical knowledge by mapping out and describing in detail how and in which IT-tools auditors spend their time in during their commitments during a typical week. Secondly, the study provides insights on the current IT-knowledge among auditors, which is a factor that influences the use of IT-tools among auditors. Further, this also includes, getting an enhanced understanding of what type of IT-knowledge that is required today, for the audit team member at a specific level, ranging from associates to partners at Big 4 and Non-big 4 firms. Thirdly, the thesis will also discuss impacts of digitalisation and advanced technologies in auditing and give an update of to what degree advanced technologies has been implemented. This was possible to accomplish through an online questionnaire and interview sessions which implied that seven different types of software are used by auditors where Spreadsheet software is one of the most frequently used IT-tools. Auditors generally use software they are familiar with and a resistance towards new software exists. The study also highlights the discussion if the implementation and use of advanced technologies is as widespread as the auditing firms are picturing it. Additionally, there is still a general lack of IT-skills among auditors, and students seeing a future in the auditing profession would have to take responsibility over their own IT-knowledge increasement alongside with educators implementing more IT-courses for students studying Business administration.

Abstract:
During the last decades the importance of IT has increased for businesses all over the world. It has transferred from only being used in administrative purposes to become more integrated to the core business. Due to the financial crisis in 2009 and increasing globalization, IT is facing the challenge of lower costs and increased efficiency. This requires IT-departments to embrace new strategies in order to fulfill these new tougher demands. Lean is a business development concept that aims to lower costs through more effective processes by removing all activities that does not create any value from the end customer’s perspective. Lean originates from Toyota’s Production System, TPS but is today used by healthcare providers, banks and IT-departments. This master thesis aims to develop a tool that can assess the opportunities for an IT-department to increase its efficiency through the use of Lean. This tool has been developed in cooperation with Niklas Larsson and is to be used by management and IT consulting company Connecta AB. To ensure that the tool is useful for the company four goals have been defined. They are that the tool should be reliable, should not require large amounts of resources, should be user friendly and identify areas that can be improvement through the implementation of Lean. The Lean IT Assessment Tool has been developed through interviews with consultants at Connecta, studies of literature and articles about Lean and Lean IT. The tool consists of three parts. The first part assesses the maturity of the IT-department from a Lean perspective. The second part is a questionnaire that aims to identify the employees’ attitude toward their work environment. The third is a value stream map, VSM, which aims to identify problems and bottlenecks in a specific IT-process. To ensure that the goals were met the tool was tested at a representative IT-department. The conclusions were that they were all reached and the continuation of the work is now left to Connecta AB.

"Costs & Benefits of an AI/IT Tool for the Swedish Antibiotics Supply Chain : An AI/IT Tool to address shortages of Antibiotics in Sweden."

Full text
Abstract:
Sweden faces shortages in antibiotics. Shortages are caused due to a variety of reasons. Due to low profit margins and opportunity costs, antibiotic supply chains may experience a lack of competition. Lack of competition across the various stages of supply chains leads to fragility in the supply chain which ultimately results in shortages. Lack of communication is another such factor leading to shortages. Incorporating an AI/IT system across the supply chain would help prevent the occurrence of shortages by addressing such factors.  PLATINEA, an innovation platform, aims to address the threat of anti-microbial resistance by ensuring a steady supply of antibiotics. Their work package 4 is dedicated to eliminating risk factors or causes of shortages that arise from supply chains of antibiotics. PLATINEA has drafted a mind map to identify the risk factors or causes of shortages in Sweden. This thesis revolves around conducting a cost benefit analysis for implementing an AI/IT tool that addresses the risk factors and causes of shortages identified from the mind map that stem from the Swedish supply chains of antibiotics. A model consisting of a breakdown in costs and benefits was created. The model not only helped us frame the various costs and benefits, but also evolved during the research to help us structure our results better. An AI/IT tool has been devised keeping the risk factors and causes of shortage in mind. This tool has four versions that have varying levels of integration and automation. Semi-structured Interviews were conducted with experts in the field of artificial Intelligence and machine learning. calculation based on historical data were made to determine costs of shortages and to some extent, visualize the extent of costs involved in antibiotic resistance. Based on the information gathered from the interviews and literatures, the costs and benefits identified in the model are addressed, including the significant benefit of reducing cost of shortages.

Hansen, Tone. "A Digital Tool to Improve the Efficiency of IT Forensic Investigations." Thesis, Högskolan i Halmstad, Akademin för informationsteknologi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-40232.

Full text
Abstract:
The IT forensic process causing bottlenecks in investigations is an identified issue, with multiple underlying causes – one of the main causes being the lack of expertise among those responsible for ordering IT forensic investigations. The focus of the study is to create and evaluate a potential solution for this problem, aiming to answer research questions related to a suitable architecture, structure and design of a digital tool that would assist individuals in creating IT forensic orders. This work evaluates concepts of such a digital tool. This is done using a grounded theory approach, where a series of test sessions together with the answers from a survey have been examined and analyzed in an iterative process. A low-fidelity prototype is used in the process. The resulting conclusion of the study is a set of concepts, ideas and principles for a digital tool that would aid in the IT forensic ordering process, as well improving the efficiency of the IT forensic process itself. Future work could involve developing the concept further to eventually become a finished product, or using it for improving already existing systems and tools, improving the efficiency and quality of the IT forensic process.

Patel, Jaitra. "Balance It! : Designing a game-based learning tool for strategic sustainable development." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Industriell teknik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-422718.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent times, companies have been motivated to transition towards sustainable development. This motivation is driven by several external and internal factors such as awareness about limited resources, environmental degradation, economic profitability, changes in regulations, etc. Transitioning towards sustainability is not an easy task. There can be several challenges such as the multi-dimensional aspect of sustainable development, changes in workflow , investing in/inventing new technology , etc. T o tackle these challenges, a strategic transition is required. In order to help organizations strategically move towards sustainable development, Göran Broman and Karl- Henrik Robèrt have provided a framework through their research. It can be an overwhelming task for a company to understand and implement this framework. The thesis addresses this challenge by designing a board game around the operational procedure provided by the framework. To develop the game, Evensen et al.’s model was leveraged which utilized different inputs such as literature review, Broman and Robèrt’s framework, and thematic analysis of interviews as inputs for game development. The interviewing process included semi-structured interviews of eight employees (sustainability-related positions) from different companies to understand how their companies are perceiving sustainable development, implementing sustainable practices, and what are the needs and challenges faced. This thesis contributes to academia in two ways. First, it extends the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) by providing an application-based learning tool. After studying the theoretical side of the framework, the developed game can enhance the understanding of the framework. Second, it modifies the game design model by substituting generative research with a framework (FSSD) as an input and further discusses the benefits of having FSSD as an input element. From a practical perspective, apart from providing a better understanding of sustainability and educating companies about FSSD, the board game session enables the employees to think about how to implement FSSD for their specific scenario. Additionally, it also provides companies a controlled environment to think about risks and foresee the consequences of their future actions. Hence, providing a safety net before the initiation of the implementation process.

Abstract:
As electronic waste and unsustainable Information- and communication product consumption is a growing global problem, more effective tools are required for people and businesses to measure and improve their social and environmental impacts. The Agenda 2030 plan for sustainable development addresses this issue and calls for proper and safer treatment of material extraction, recycling and disposal. TCO Development have created an IT impact assessment tool which addresses this specific problem by giving procurers and purchasers the ability to browse and compare sustainable IT products. To be an effective tool, usability and user engagement attributes have to be considered, as well as the context of the user. The target audience of IT procurement officers are defined and a qualitative study is conducted to evaluate which changes to the design are important to implement to increase the usability and user engagement of the IT sustainability impact assessment tool. The evaluation of the tool shows general positive feedback towards the general layout, design and functionality. Only a few severe errors are discovered which are identified to be in the filtering process. Errors regarding the sensitivity of the slider tool, the excess of options when choosing a TCO certificate version, and confusing terminology while choosing a product type are a few problems which are discovered. A few corrective design alterations were presented based on these discoveries. Moving forward, the iterative design process should continue to address the remaining usability errors. Furthermore, developers and designers should prioritize improving the aspects of data accuracy, transparency as well as system integration to improve corresponding user engagement attributes.

Qu, S. "Demolish-IT : the development of a process management tool for the demolition industry." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6375.

Full text
Abstract:
Today most demolition projects undertaken are complex and involve many parties who must comply with a myriad of regulations as well as other constraints (e.g. finance). The management of demolition projects requires individual team members to have a wide range of skills and knowledge in addition to practical experience. Demolition processes currently operated are frequently performed in an unstructured, intuitive manner with considerable reliance on experience, skill, knowledge or subjective judgement of the demolition engineer or other individual responsible for a demolition project. Research on demolition ‘process management' is a new area that has rarely been addressed. However, within the building design and construction management sectors, there are a number of intelligent solutions that have been developed to assist in the management of business processes and business process re-engineering. Process management systems and process mapping through the use of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) technology have been applied to help the construction industry significantly improve performance. In an attempt to provide intelligent support to the management of dynamic demolition processes, this research reports upon that was developed using ICT applications a management system prototype entitled “Demolish-IT”. The prototype of Demolish-IT utilises four tiers of information which includes: (1) the standard demolition process map; (2) user-defined demolition process map; (3) demolition task manager; and (4) database of demolition process requirements. The prototype provides on ICT platform that unifies demolition processes and requirements to achieve improved process management. The research involved a combination of face-to-face interviews with demolition experts; real projects document reviews and site observation to produce the generic demolition process map. Other products of the work included: database solutions to store demolition process requirements; and process modelling to manage demolition task compliance flow within relevant industry standards. Evaluation of the research work proved its validity, acceptance and applicability within industry. Future work will aim to transpose the outputs into commercially viable software.

Keshavarzi-Roonizi, Naghmeh. "Development of an IT tool for implementation of computer models of hydro-environmental systems." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2006. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/35964.

Full text
Abstract:
Natural water systems are complex flow domains where water quality is affected by the interactions of a wide range of hydrodynamic, geometrical, physicochemical and biological phenomena. Consequently, computer models developed to simulate hydro-environmental conditions in these systems have inherently elaborate architectures and usually lack flexibility. In particular, in systems such as rivers, estuaries and coastal zones, where crude, large scale averaging is not acceptable, the modelling is based on sophisticated computer programs whose utilization require expert level training. This often precludes the use of these models by operators in organisations such as environment agencies, local authorities and water companies. At present, therefore, the use of the most accurate and reliable hydro-environmental simulation tools are restricted to research centres. To overcome this difficulty the relatively new discipline of hydro-informatics has been developed in recent years. The idea is to utilize maximum capabilities of modem computing systems in conjunction with innovative programming algorithms, combined with the state-of-the art mathematical and numerical schemes to enhance the level of software intelligence so that operators with minimal training can generate useful simulations in a short time. This research project has been focussed on the development of an IT tool which can provide a user-friendly intelligent environment for accessing sophisticated hydro-environmental models. The system is designed to be operated via a network by multiple users. The application of this system to simulation of a number of realistic hydro-environmental phenomena has been carried out and the results are presented and discussed in this thesis.

Abstract:
The search for increased productivity and cost reduction in machining can be interpreted as the desire to increase the material removal rate, MRR, and maximize the cutting tool utilization. The CNC process is complex and involves numerous limitations and parameters, ranging from tolerances to machinability. A well-managed preparation process creates the foundations for achieving a reduction in manufacturing errors and machining time. Along the preparation process of the NC-program, two different studies have been conducted and are presented in this thesis. One study examined the CAM programming preparation process from the Lean perspective. The other study includes an evaluation of how the cutting tools are used in terms of MRR and tool utilization. The material removal rate is defined as the product of three variables, namely the cutting speed, the feed and the depth of cut, which all constitute the cutting data. Tool life is the amount of time that a cutting tool can be used and is mainly dependent on the same variables. Two different combinations of cutting data might provide the same MRR, however the tool life will be different. Thereby the difficulty is to select the cutting data to maximize both MRR and cutting tool utilization. A model for the analysis and efficient selection of cutting data for maximal MRR and maximal tool utilization has been developed and is presented. The presented model shortens the time dedicated to the optimized cutting data selection and the needed iterations along the program development.

Abstract:

There is no debate over the importance of IT security. Equally important is the research on security assessment; methods for evaluating the security of IT systems. The Swedish Defense Research Agency has for the last couple of years been conducting research on the area of security assessment. To verify the correctness of these methods, tools are implemented.

This thesis presents the design and implementation of an environment to support and aid future implementations and evaluations of security assessment methods. The aim of this environment, known as the New Tool Environment, NTE, is to assist the developer by facilitating the more time consuming parts of the implementation. A large part of this thesis is devoted to the development of a database solution, which results in an object/relational data access layer.

Abstract:
IT projects are complex and often numerous challenges arise during the projects’ execution. The ten knowledge areas designed to support projects management more often challenge include the project management team to deliver the outcome on time. The present study tries to answer the question of whether the use of a technological management tool in project management can help to solve most problematic knowledge areas, and to meet the delivery deadlines. The author runs a case study at an IT consulting firm. The purpose for the study is to investigate if technologies can help to resolve these issues, and to recommend a project management tool for more efficient delivery time. In a two phased study, first, the author identifies the project management knowledge areas that may have impacted IT project delivery delays, and second, the author investigates if using a project management tool can solve the delivery time issue. Results from the first phase show that delivery issues emerged at different levels, namely: stakeholders, resources, scope, quality, and integration management.  To investigate if a management tool could help to overcome the delays in delivery, a selection of technological tools was made. Based on the results from the first phase so the technological tool integrates functions and features for stakeholders, resources, scope quality, and integration management. The interviewees then ranked three technological tools and shared opinions on possible adoption of any of these tools. Final analysis show that interviewees think that proposed technological tools can resolve some of the issues experienced in the projects: mainly, the transition between departments, resource allocation, to visualise the quality management, plan for communication with stakeholders, and clearer handling of the project’s requirements. In the final results from the second interview, the tool that can help to solve issues with the five most problematic knowledge areas, and thus the delivery delays issue, for the case company is Genius Project.

Abstract:
Background: Several selected population-based studies have emphasized the significance of resting heart rate as an independent cardiovascular risk factor. However, there are no data available for using resting heart rate as a cardiovascular risk predictor in contemporary primary care. Thus, the aim of our analysis was to examine the clinical value of the measurement of resting heart rate in a large, unselected population-based cohort of primary care subjects under the conditions of contemporary primary prevention. Design: Prospective, population-based cohort study. Methods: We examined a subgroup of 5320 unselected primary care subjects free of coronary artery disease from the nationwide, longitudinal Diabetes Cardiovascular Risk Evaluation Targets and Essential Data for Commitment of Treatment (DETECT) cohort study, which was conducted from 2003 to 2008. Results: During the follow-up time of 5 years, 258 events were reported. Elevated resting heart rate was not associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular events (HR = 0.75, p = 0.394), cardiovascular mortality (HR = 0.71, p = 0.616) or major cardiovascular events (HR = 0.77, p = 0.376). By cross-sectional analysis, elevated heart rate clustered with markers of the metabolic syndrome, like increased blood pressure (systolic: OR = 5.54, p < 0.0001; diastolic: OR = 3.82, p < 0.0001), elevated fasting plasma glucose levels (OR = 8.84, p < 0.0001), hypertriglyceridaemia (OR = 22.16, p = 0.001), and obesity (body mass index OR = 0.89, p < 0.0001). Assessment of resting heart rate in clinical practice had minimal and non-significant additional prognostic value compared to established cardiovascular risk factors as judged by C statistics (C = 0.001, p = 0.979). Conclusion: The measurement of resting heart rate in the daily routine of primary care does not provide incremental prognostic information for cardiovascular risk stratification.

Nyman, Freja Lina. "Cost transparency & storytelling : How fashion companies disclose cost transparency information and use it as a storytelling tool."

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Consumers are aware of and care for the environment, which has led to a need for transparent and sustainable fashion products. This results in that companies need to create transparent and sustainable communication strategies to gain the consumers’ trust. In order to strengthen trust among consumers, brands needs to tell stories that are credible and create emotional bonds. A few fashion companies has taken this transparency further through implementing cost transparency in their business model. This means that they as opposite to traditional retailers reveals its costs and margins in order to justify the product price and communicate this through storytelling towards the end consumer. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to present how fashion companies that today work with cost transparency disclose this information, what parts of the cost structure they do not disclose and how it is communicated through storytelling. This paper will focus on companies that communicate cost transparency to the end consumer online and how they do this through their company websites and their online shops. The research will add to the existing literature which has until now concentrated on transparency from an ethical supply chain perspective and price transparency. Methodology: This research is a qualitative study where a comparative research design is chosen. A multiple-case study is chosen where primary data regarding cost transparency and storytelling is collected from three company websites. The data is later analysed back and forth with concepts presented in the theoretical framework in order to analyse how fashion companies work with cost transparency and storytelling. Findings: The research shows that all three cases choose to display transparent cost information related to direct material costs and manufacturing costs as well as a price comparison with traditional retail brands. Meanwhile the less recognisable costs such as the indirect costs related to running the business were not included in the cost breakdown information. The cost transparency narrative is used in storytelling to educate the consumer where all three cases tell a story where they function as the hero, meanwhile the traditional retailers represents the villain. Managerial implications: From a company perspective, everything related to adding a value to the product is seen as part of the cost structure. Hence, in order to keep the consumers’ trust and stay relevant, it is seen that companies are advised to tell stories that transparently gives the consumers the full picture of the cost structure.

Alsalemi, Hussein. "Developing an IT tool for improving workforce motivation and capabilities : an empirical case study with reference to Qatar." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2016. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/59672/.

Full text
Abstract:
Human, Organisation and Technology (HOT) are all important components of IS. However, organisations look to technology as the main tool of change that can help them achieve their goals. This change usually concerns the needs of the organisation, and not the needs of its human resources, despite it being the latter that is the principal actor that any organisation depends upon to achieve its goals. The aim of this research is to develop an IT tool that itself can satisfy the workforce humanistic needs. In order to develop this IT tool, a theoretical investigation and practical experimentations were conducted in a series of case studies involving government organisations in Qatar. Based on the theoretical investigation, an approach was proposed based on Socio-Technical Theory (STT), supported by learning from the ETHICS application of STT concepts and Client-Led Information systems Creation (CLIC) application of Soft System Methodology (SSM) principles. This approach was used to guide the development of the IT tool which was then used in actual organisational work environments to assess its impact on the Qatari workforce's motivation and capabilities. Empirical results from this research show that an IT itself cannot be used to improve workforce motivation and capabilities in the case of Qatar. However, IT can do this by supporting a work environment enabled by necessary managerial practises and work environment requirements. Based on the proposed approach, this requires firstly, an understanding of the needs of the social subsystem of the organisation to improve workforce motivation and capability; then these needs should be developed into functions that are enabled by the work environment and supported by the IT tool. Lastly, the new IT tool needs to be integrated into the existing technical subsystem of the organisation. These findings have both theoretical and practical implications. They contribute to a better understanding of the role of IT in improving the workforce's motivation and capabilities. They extend the application of STT principles in the area of developing human-focused IS by finding an alternative to the participatory approach via learning from SSM principles. They also provide specific understanding of how to develop an IT tool as well as what the work environment needs to provide to enable the application of the IT tool, to improve workforce motivation and capabilities. This PhD research also has social implications for the way IT is utilised in organisations. It can affect areas of IS utilisation and workforce well-being, as well as the role of leadership in maximising the value of IS from a human-focused perspective and the area of utilising IT in a virtual team to consider their humanistic needs.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis consists of a scenario-based evaluation of an IT-security assessment method known as the eXtendedMethod for Assessment of System Security (XMASS), as well as an assessment of a real-world network using the softwareimplementation of this method known as the Security AssessmeNT Application (SANTA).This thesis also describes a number of improvements made to the software implementation, some which could also be addedto the method itself. These were performed during the preparation of the assessment but had no effect on the outcome. The evaluation showed that the method and implementation contained a number of flaws in the way the filtering effect ofthe traffic mediators of a network, such as network-based firewalls, was implemented. When it comes to the assessment ofthe real-world network it was seen that the network, given the supplied information regarding the software and hardwaresetup of its entities, appeared to be sufficiently secure to handle the transmission of data at the lowest classification level(Restricted). However, as with almost all security assessments, this does not mean that the network is guaranteed to besecure enough; it just indicates that, given the information specified, the network has the potential of being sufficientlysecure. The main conclusion of this thesis is that the way XMASS and SANTA calculates the effect of filtering traffic mediatorsshould be looked into and improved to increase the usability of the tool. The method can however still be used in its currentstate, but requires the individual(s) performing the assessment to be aware of the drawbacks of the current implementationand thus compensate for these when producing the input for the assessment method.

Lean is heralded as the driving methodology for successful organizations ranging from defense to consumer industries. Its approach to reduction of waste and continuous process improvement allows a company to reduce cost, meet customer needs, and sustain growth. As companies embark on transforming their organizations into more efficient, nimble, and high velocity organizations through integration of lean they face severe inertia. The process of lean transformation and integrating lean is an arduous task at which most companies falter on for a number of reasons. These reasons are strategic (costs and time to implement changes), political (decision making process delays), and cultural (company norms and employee motivation). Promoting intrapreneurship in organizations can serve as a driving mechanism to ensure change goals and objectives are met and are sustainable. Intrapreneurial entities are able to cut through silos within an organization and meet the needs of its direct customers. The survival of an intrapreneurial organization is solely dependent on meeting customer needs. Therefore, the cost and time delay to meet the needs of its customers for an intrapreneurial organization is much less than other established functional and support groups within the organization. The hypothesis was that incorporating intrapreneurship into a transformation plan will aid in successful integration of lean in the organization. VBS, an intrapreneurial group within Raytheon IDS, is used as a case example of the impact of intrapreneurship on lean transformation. VBS has played a key role in monitoring and promoting lean culture at IADC (Integrated Air Defense Center and manufacturing site for IDS) at Raytheon. Using real-time metrics, the group has implemented many essential performance and behavioral feedback loops. These real-time metrics and behavioral results continuously drive operations to converge on lean behavior. This has resulted in a 20 % reduction in operating costs for four years running from its lean transformation.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the Knowledge Management Information Tool (KM-IT) Vendor Management Web Service and its reliability features. KM-IT is a web-based knowledge management information tool for the deactivation and decommissioning (D&D) user community. The Vendor Management (VM) module provides a directory service for searching D&D vendors. Clients have an increasing need to integrate and display the vendor information in their own applications. As such, this study proposes Web Services technology to provide VM access to clients. Moreover, when clients access information, particularly via mobile applications, they can encounter different failures that may occur on the network or the server. Such problems require fault tolerance in the VM Service. This study examines various reliability standards and selects the WS-ReliableMessaging standard as the best-suited approach to implement the reliability features for the VM Service. Implementation evaluation confirms that the KM-IT VM Service can effectively tolerate different types of failures.

Fairlie, J. E. "Getting a handle on it : a first step towards understanding the cognitive evolutionary processes underlying changes in the archaeological record that relate to Pliocene and Pleistocene hand-held tool and hafted tool technologies." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2017. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3014619/.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of this project is to be able to describe the changes in cognitive ability that have to take place to enable a hominin group that was formerly only able to produce assemblages consisting of reductive or knapped hand-held stone tools, to become a group able to produce a mixed assemblage containing both reductive hand-held tools and also combinatorial hafted tools. Unlike reductive stone tools, hafted tools have pre-processed separate parts that are engineered to fit together to form a single object. Secondary project aims immediately became necessary to support this main aim. The first was to describe the two different groups of tools in a way that showed them as different stages of the same technological dynamic of change. The second was to describe how best to define the over-used word ‘cognition’ in evolutionary terms. The third was to describe how such cognition might change over time in biological terms and also in terms of new cognitive and action potential. It was then necessary to analyse the different technologies included in the period of change considered between 3.3Mya to 0.03Mya, with particular emphasis on the transition between Early to Middle Stone Age and hafted technologies in both Africa and Eurasia. This, and the nature of the cognitive theory chosen as most promising for the project, required the innovation of a new analytical method which focussed on the motor-action or gestural sequences of the technology manufacturer rather than on the finished morphology of the artefacts themselves. Each tool-type gestural sequence was manually coded and then carefully analysed in order to identify gestural pattern commonalities and changes over time. Results show changes in the gestural patterns across the different coded technologies which suggest that evolutionary change is gradual and cumulative, but with moments of emergence when component parts come together to form something new and literally greater than the sum of its parts. Cognitive change is shown to move between a fast and highly effective but implicit, non-language-based cognitive system that relies heavily on rhythmic repetition (early knapping technologies), to a newer system that retains its original ability to use rhythmic repetition but can also incorporate conscious moments of planning, high-level action sequencing, and single discrete actions connected with more derived brain-body systems. This new method of analysis amounts to an exciting innovation that offers up new opportunities to research the evolution of cognition in a more holistic framework both within a single species, and also between different species, particularly of course between modern humans, hominins and modern great apes.

Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för informatik, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-121522.

Full text
Abstract:
Emergency Health Care (EHC) is an extended and multi-professional protocol designed to make communication easier in the event of a health-care emergency. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) play a vital role within EHC by coordinating emergency responses across involved departments as well as to health-care providers in the pre-hospital and hospital settings. Despite advances in ICT, there are still a variety of challenges regarding ICT usage in emergencies. To identify these challenges, a semi-structured interview was conducted with pre-hospital and hospital staff at the Emergency Departments of Vaasa Central Hospital, Finland, and Umeå University Hospital, Sweden. The findings indicate that workflow practices and the applying of medical knowledge in a pre-hospital setting is more challenging in Vaasa due to limited accessibility to the patient electronic record system. In the hospital setting, the clinical workflow and application of medical knowledge is easier in Umeå than in Vaasa as a result of there being an integrated information system in the Umeå region compared to a disintegrated system in the Vaasa region. It was discovered that the lack of a national record system in Sweden is a challenge for practitioners in the hospital setting in Umeå. In addition, badly structured information in the Finnish national record system has made collaborative activities between departments and hospitals difficult within EHC. The results reveal that the capacity of IT tools to provide on-time accessibility to patient information is fundamental for safe decision making and collaborative activities across departments and hospitals within EHC.

Abstract:
Why this thesis is needed. This thesis is motivated by the falling school results of Swedish 15-year-olds, a lack of IT tools in Swedish schools and a call for turning the theory on formative assessment into practice. Previous research that is used in the thesis. This thesis mainly builds on the research done by John Hattie which is presented in his book Visible Learning from 2009, Wiliam & Thompson's research on effective formative assessment from 2007, Pachler et al. research on formative e-assessment from 2010 and Panadero & Jonsson's research on scoring rubrics from 2013. Research question. What key aspects should be taken into consideration when designing and implementing an IT tool based on scoring rubrics which aims to support formative assessment according to the key strategies for effective formative assessment as identified by Wiliam & Thompson (2007)? Method. To answer this question I chose a qualitative approach of parallel paper prototyping where I iteratively exposed the design and my ideas during focus groups to teachers, a headmaster, employees at The Swedish National Agency for Education and high school students, followed by an evaluation of the key topics that surfaced during the focus groups. Results. The results consist of eight key aspects to take into consideration when designing and implementing such a tool. Discussion and future research. Finally I discuss the implications of my findings and present directions for future research which include the construction of the tool, further investigation of the key aspects identified in this study, identification of additional key aspects and more.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the usage of an Apparel and Footwear Environmental Assessment Tool, the Rapid Design Module, in Swedish companies in the textile and fashion industry and the tool’s possible impact on the change process of organizational culture towards a more sustainable one. A qualitative study has been conducted via interviewing and observing employees using the focal tool on-site in three different companies. A theoretical framework within organizational culture was developed along with necessary cultural traits a company should nurture in order to change its culture towards a more sustainable one. The most important findings pointed out that companies should develop common guidelines in order to use the tool in question coherently and in unison. The tool was found to act as a change initiator in the employee level of the companies and additionally management support was found to be essential in order to empower employees in taking initiative in their work. Furthermore, the tool showed signs of increased collaboration within the companies’ external and internal environments, i.e. learning from one another, as well as it was observed to encourage interdependent thinking, which both are the necessary traits mentioned earlier.

Abstract:
Creativity has being identified as a key factor for adequately addressing the challenges individuals are required to face in a globalized world, with a quick rate of change where knowledge becomes obsolete very rapidly and where knowledge creation is the basis of the development of a knowledge society. Generating programmes and strategies to promote teachers’ skills for creative teaching is therefore important to accomplish the goal of facilitating students’ creativity. The aim of this research was to develop a tool to facilitate teachers’ reflection in relation to what they actually do that may promote students’ creativity and also to help them in identifying the kinds of changes they could make to improve their teaching to support students’ creativity. Teachers’ implicit theories in relation to creativity are important as they may influence the decisions they undertake in relation to their pedagogical strategies, behaviours and attitudes in the educational environment. The research was undertaken in a public university in Mexico City, to identify Mexican Higher education students’ and teachers’ conceptions of creativity, of what enhances or hinders creativity in the classroom environment and what characterizes a creative teacher. A pedagogical model for ‘creative teaching for creativity’, was developed using findings from the research. To design the model salient indicators of creative teaching and creative teachers from previous research and explicit theories were also taken into account. Results of the pilot study of the instrument, called ‘Crea-teach’, demonstrated that it accomplished the aim for which it was created since teachers’ reported that the tool helped them to reflect on their teaching as well as to identify some of the changes they could make to promote students’ creativity.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 75-80).
This media dissertation researches the cell phone's actual and potential role as a multimedia tool of communication amongst South African youth and looks at how it can be used to platform youth stories for media and advertising. The youth's connection to the cell phone has come to mean so much more than its actual technological functions. This media dissertation investigates the cell phone phenomenon amongst the youth of today, by looking at both local and international trends, with a more intimate focus on the current trends amongst the South African youth. It will look at the sociology of the cell phone and the culture surrounding it. It will then consider new technology and how the cell phone's role may also be a tool for leapfrogging in South Africa. It is also important to consider the negative connotations that arise with the cell phone's infiltration amongst the youth.Through analysis of recent research about the cell phone's impact on the youth here and internationally, two opposing media directions are identified: the cell phone as a tool in marketing and advertising; and the cell phone as a tool in investigative journalism. By analyzing two different areas, this media dissertation creates a broad and holistic understanding of the cell phone's potential functions through a strong literature review. Firstly, the cell phone's function in marketing and advertising will be analyzed. This media dissertation will take into account the youth market in South Africa through a case study of one of South Africa's strategic consultancy companies: Instant Grass. Through a close look at the youth market now, it will be possible to create a greater understanding of the current trends and how to capitalize on these trends. In terms of marketing and advertising, this media dissertation then discusses an advertising exercise with a youth group studying Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town. Secondly, the cell phone in terms of media and investigative journalism will be analysed through fieldwork done with etv's 3rd Degree. This media dissertation looks at how the cell phone could be used as a tool for youth stories by looking at the parameters involved in creating investigative stories. This chapter also takes a look at the issue of citizen journalism in the digital publishing world today and the rate at which cell phone technology is spurring this development on.

Abstract:
This research study investigates if and how international students in Stockholm, Sweden use Facebook as a tool to make friends and integrate themselves within their new society. To gather information and data for the first part in 2011 a qualitative- and a quantitative approach was used. An online survey was applied to gather numerical data and in-depth interviews were conducted for the qualitative insights. Ten years later, in 2021, follow-up interviews were done with the interviewee subjects of the qualitative data gathering. This to contextualize the findings from 2011, as well as put in perspective with scholarly insights about Facebook and international students presented between the years 2011 and 2021. During the first part of the study, in 2011, Facebook had been available outside the United States for five years and not a significant amount of research had been conducted on the subject. Findings indicated that international students in Stockholm used Facebook to a wider extent when having arrived in a new country. Additional findings showcased that Facebook usage increased in terms of using the site to retrieve information about events and activities. Findings from both 2011 and 2021 showcased that Facebook and other social media applications are mainly used as means to maintain existing relationships, not to search for new friends. Findings also indicated that messenger services have obtained user patterns that originally existed on traditional social networks, such as Facebook. More research must be done on the topic to state whether these findings hold any statistical truthfulness. Suggested topics for further research are included in the conclusions and discussion section of this paper.

Abstract:
The Thesis Project aimed to cultivate understanding about the interrelationships between humans and materials in the context of consumerism, sustainability, and time, through helping people learn about woodworking materials and tools,  develop a more profound respect for them, and understand how one interacts with them. Incorporating repair culture and material education into a collaborative service design, the author reflected on his sustainability as a woodworker to enable others to connect with materials and tools in a meaningful way. The Project followed a nonlinear process, allowing the author to move back and forth to reflect, refine and progress from idea to form, and back to idea, while respecting his tangible need for medium and method. By researching scores of different woodworking tools found in an antique tool box received as a gift, the author defined their purpose in woodcraft and their connection with people they served and society as a whole. Inspirations for the Project consisted of woodworking, time, and social, environmental and economic stability, in addition to various types of design: service, collaborative, circular, and critical. Four different processes – prototyping, service blueprint, advertising and service experiences – were employed to respond to the research question. Key results included the provision of over 20 services to 15 individuals through a simple design process. By helping people to fix their objects in an ongoing conversation about sustainability with regard to material use and consumption, tools and practices were used effectively to change interrelationships between people and materials. Through the services and ‘hands-on conversations’, many began to understand and appreciate the possibilities of tools to revitalize old furniture and increase their value. Some people used tools themselves to resolve their problems, with all participants showing appreciation for the services, while expressing commitment to use, rather than discard, the objects. A few of the thousands contacted through social media, responded to calls for assistance, with the Project concluding that the process has potential, but without a business model, it would be difficult to sustain. Questions regarding the future included: What type of business could harness opportunities, offering viable employment? How many would need to be involved? How great is the demand for services? Which policies or regulations must be in place for a successful practice? The author was cognizant of the need for additional skills and knowledge to pursue the challenge of operationalizing the services provided through a sustainable livelihood.

Abstract:
The IT consultancy industry is characterized by knowledge intensive implementationprojects related to varying levels of standardized information system software. When faced with a large implementation project at a previously unknown customer various assessmentsis usually conducted to identify the level of fit between the software and organizationin order to plan and structure the implementation process. However, there are several aspects of the customer organization that potentially can affect the end result as well as the implementation process that is unrelated to the fit between the software and the implementation organization as well as the potency of the implementation method. By conducting measurements of these maturity factors within the customer organization the implementing procedure can be modified based on the customer maturity level in order to become more aligned with the capabilities present in the customer organization. Research question: Which aspects need to be covered by a Customer Maturity Analysis Tool (CMAT) in order to evaluate the pre implementation maturity for potential customersof our case company and how should these aspects be organized and measured? The first task of the research process was to create an underlying model of maturity perspectives and aspects to structure the literature review as well as the empirical data collection. It was decided to adhere to a deductive approach where the theoretical model would be validated and if necessary modified in accordance to feedback from potential users of the CMAT within the case company. This procedure was repeated in the creation of measurements and maturity levels for the aspects to be used in the tool. The research process would therefore transition from a general model based on literature review, through a iterative feedback loop to a final model tailored to the specific requirementsof the case company. The final CMAT ended up containing four main perspectives of customer maturity; ITi nfrastructure, Culture, Process and Business Governance. These four perspectives were in turn divided into subgroups in order to be able to aggregate and compare differentaspects of the perspectives with each other.

Abstract:
The methods for creating new (To-be) models within Enterprise Architecture is very similar to those used in Human-Computer Interaction for creating new products. Since Enterprise Architecture is used on existing systems, and because of the similarities between the methods used between the fields, the research question has been formulated as follows: "What is the relationship between tacit knowledge and the utility value of an architectural model for an organisational department studied through observations with experienced users?". The study aims to show that methods for reusing/changing already existing products produces a higher utility value when developing on an existing system. Since observations could show flaws and opportunities which can otherwise be overlooked, the architecture could benefit from gaining tacit knowledge which does not show from interviews. The results show that observations overall give higher utility and the hypothesis, that the observation and interview methods give equal utility values, can be discarded.

Viggiani, Fabio. "Design and implementation of a non-aggressive automated penetration testing tool : An approach to automated penetration testing focusing on stability and integrity for usage in production environments." Thesis, KTH, Radio Systems Laboratory (RS Lab), 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-122906.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this Master’s thesis project is automated penetration testing. A penetration test is a practice used by security professionals to assess the security of a system. This process consists of attacking the system in order to reveal flaws.  Automating the process of penetration testing brings some advantages, the main advantage being reduced costs in terms of time and human resources needed to perform the test. Although there exist a number of automated tools to perform the required procedures, many security professionals prefer manual testing. The main reason for this choice is that standard automated tools make use of techniques that might compromise the stability and integrity of the system under test. This is usually not acceptable since the majority of penetration tests are performed in an operating environment with high availability requirements. The goal of this thesis is to introduce a different approach to penetration testing automation that aims to achieve useful test results without the use of techniques that could damage the system under test. By investigating the procedures, challenges, and considerations that are part of the daily work of a professional penetration tester, a tool was designed and implemented to automate this new process of non-aggressive testing. The outcome of this thesis project reveals that this tool is able to provide the same results as standard automated penetration testing procedures. However, in order for the tool to completely avoid using unsafe techniques, (limited) initial access to the system under test is needed.

The importance of Information Technology (IT) projects for business is increasing and project results directly impact organizations’ strategy and performance. In this scenario, risk management processes can help project managers to analyze the consequences of changes on project goals and baselines. By managing risks, project managers can have a holistic view of projects. Despite project managers recognizing the importance of risk management, many of them only manage risks partially or even, skip this process due to daily difficulties and time pressure. Wiki platforms have some characteristics and principles inherited from Web 2.0 tools that can be useful when adopted on risk management. Wikis can help project managers evolve their teams and stakeholders on the process of identifying, reporting and monitoring risks on projects. This thesis proposes a framework - the Wiki for Risk Management (W4RM) - that can be used on risk management in IT projects. The process of designing the framework was divided into three stages: literature review, one focus group and interviews based on a constructivist methodological approach. This research points out that professionals face a series of difficulties as they engage on risk management, as previously argued by other authors on project management research area. Due to these difficulties, project managers are not able to manage risks as expected. An important theoretical contribution of this research is the robust analysis existing issues on risk management in IT settings. Another contribution of this thesis is the proposed framework for risk management for IT projects. For managerial implication of this research the W4RM framework that can be used by practitioners on project management.

Abstract:
Please!”
Motivation is an important component of success in second language acquisition, as the process is both time-consuming and involved (Gass & Selinker, 2008, p. 426). According to Skolverket, the reading and analysis of fiction is a subject requirement in Swedish as a second language (Skolverket, 2011, s. 2). Books with incomprehensible words can be perceived as insurmountable obstacles in SLA, and motivation can be the driving force prompting the learner to conquer these unavoidable hurdles and distractions. The aim of this close study of an eight-year-old child in second grade was to analyze how drama as a motivation tool affected the learner’s reading experience and how the child expressed their related feelings. Consequently, the study is a qualitative, phenomenological study of a student with English as their L1. Audio recordings were used to document the drama-related activities used in the reading of the book, as well as the student’s reactions. For the analysis, parts of the recordings were transcribed. The results showed that the student’s commitment, empathy, and motivation regarding the reading increased when drama was used. The learner acted as if they were in front of an audience, laughed and screamed, illustrated with their body, embodied the characters emphatically, improvised, and read with increased conviction and understanding. Additionally, the learner verbally expressed their joy by asking: “Can we dramatize it? Please!”

Abstract:
This dissertation thesis is focused on the search for the presence of DIY (Do It Yourself) technologies in the practice of digital sculpting, from the beginnings of this progressive way of creation to the present. The work, through three thematic areas, answers the main research questions: What kind of technology is or has the DIY phenomenon been represented in digital sculpture? How have these technologies influenced and are influencing the development and direction of digital sculpture? Within the first thematic area, the presence of the DIY phenomenon in the beginnings of digital creation of a spatial work of art is mapped until the moment of constituting the concept of Digital Sculpture, as a designation of this new way of creation. The second area deals with specific technologies of digital sculpture, in terms of technical tools and their DIY alternatives. The development of these alternative technologies and their influence on the gradual democratization of digital sculpture tools is investigated. The third area examines the creative methods of DIY, which have been integrated into the practice of digital sculpture.

Corrosion resistance and soldering tendency of different materials in moltenAl–Si–Cu alloy were studied. Hot-working tool steel, plasma nitrided steel andduplex layers with CrN, TiAlN, TiAlSiN and CrAlN top coatings, which wereproduced to various degree of surface roughness, were covered by the study. An ejection test was employed for investigation of the concerned phenomena. The ejection test was improved in order to increase its accuracy and thereliability of process simulation. Samples were examined in both short andextended periods of contact (5 and 20 min) with liquid casting. Castingsolidification was extended in order to intensify the corrosion effects. Contraryto common findings, it was found that the ejection force of the investigatedmaterials does not depend on their chemical composition. For the coatedsamples, a pronounced dependence of the ejection force on the surfaceroughness was found. The ejection force increases with decrease in surfaceroughness. All investigated coatings are prone to mechanical soldering by Al–Si–Cu alloy. Still, their corrosion resistance substantially exceeds the corrosionresistance of steel and plasma nitrided layer. Longer exposure of coatedsamples to cast alloy induced lower ejection forces, which is a consequenceof coatings oxidation. It was found that the investigated coatings are inert toliquid aluminium. However, the underlying material undergoes oxidation andcorrosion through coating growth defects. The findings concerning the wearmechanisms of protective layers support further development of duplex layersintended for die casting tools protection.

Full text
