A large literature documents how intergenerational mobility—the degree to which (dis)advantage is passed on from parents to children—varies across and within countries. Less is known about the origin or persistence of such differences. We show that US areas populated by descendants to European immigrants have similar levels of income equality and mobility as the countries their forebears came from: highest in areas dominated by descendants to Scandinavian and German immigrants, lower in places with French or Italian heritage, and lower still in areas with British roots. Although most Italian and Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States during the same turn-of-the-century period, the occupational trajectories of their descendants have been very different. Many writers have emphasized that Jews brought with them urban-industrial experience, entrepreneurial skills, a determination to settle in America, and a reverence for education (Joseph, 1969, orig. 1914; Glazer, 1958). Italians were more often peasants or farm laborers, though their familiarity with commerce and the crafts should not be underestimated (Briggs, 1978; Gabaccia, 1984). Some have also argu

Even less information survived on the writer’s daughter Elizaveta Mikhailovna, Baroness Disterlaut in her first marriage, Countess Da Passano in her second marriage. She hadn’t left memoirs about her father and therefore hasn’t become an object of interest for scholars.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the entire volume and thus continues a critical conversation started in New Italian Migrations to the United States, Volume 1: Politics and History Since 1945. This introductory essay considers a number of issues pertaining to creativity and culture, across both vernacular and commodified arenas. First, it recapitulates basic information about migratory flows from Italy to the United States since 1945: class, education, and motivation for emigrating are barometers employed to distinguish between different kinds of Italian migrants and Italian Americans during the past seventy years. The chapter develops increasing attention to the study of the specificity of Italian immigrants and expressive culture since 1945. Each new group of Italian migrants and their descendants creates fresh models of Italian American identity and culture and impact pre-existing ones. They effectively and continually reboot Italian America.

This article aims to analyse the way in which the descendants of Italian settlers living in southern Brazil have expressed, through writing, their belonging to the “Italian world” as a result of the migratory process of their ancestors what happened in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a growing literature in post-1975 Brazil when the centenary of Italian immigration in the country was commemorated. Written in the form of memories, family stories, accounts, romances, poems, recipe books and other formats, this literature is the scenario in which gender, generation, class and other issues take a voice.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing toleration of dual citizenship changes the basic rules governing citizenship attribution. It creates new possibilities for legal connections between states and individuals, including overlapping memberships and belonging from a distance. In this chapter, I argue that the legitimisation of dual citizenship leads to the adoption of strategic policies on the part of states (the “supply” side) as well as on the part of eligible individuals (the “demand” side). Numerous states use dual citizenship policies to select new citizens that do not live on their territory and do not intend to relocate or give up their original citizenship. These include the descendants of emigrants (e.g. Italian descendants in South America who are now offered Italian citizenship), cross-border co-ethnics (such as ethnic Hungarians in the countries surrounding Hungary), as well as millionaires from developing countries who can now – for a hefty sum – acquire citizenship from a country where they have never set foot. From the perspective of eligible individuals, such schemes offer opportunities to strategically expand their scope of rights and opportunities by acquiring a second citizenship that is ranked higher in the global hierarchy of citizenship value. The expected benefits may include global travel freedom, an insurance policy and broader economic opportunities. These developments, which impact both states and individuals, weaken the traditional association between citizenship and national identity.

Abstract:
The epilogue explores the fate of Italian transnational migrant marketplaces after World War II. It connects today’s popularity of Fernet con Coca, considered Argentina’s national drink, to the historical movements of Italians and trade goods in the early-twentieth century. The Epilogue argues that due to Italy’s postwar “economic miracle,” the socio-economic mobility of second- and third-generation Italians and changes in the status of Italian food worldwide, migrant marketplaces came to exist increasingly in the imaginary and in commodified form, rather than in the actual, embodied movements of Italians and foods from Italy. However, imagined migrant marketplaces continue to play a critical role in the performance of ethnicity for descendants of Italians and in the consumption of Italianità for non-migrants in the U.S. and Argentina.
